Match Reports June 28 & 29

Excellent work this week by Newtown White U13 team for their first win of the season, with Newtown Falcons Division 1 Men continuing on their way undefeated.  And it’s great to see how much the Joeys players are improving.

JOEYS (UNDER 6)

The Joeys players are learning some great skills, and moving well into playing games and learning strategies and tactics.  There were some some fantastic pushes to pass the ball to team mates and great running to move to the next space.  Great work Parker, Hamish, Jimmy, Matt, Avah, Alex, Amelia, Sadie and Bella.

MINKEY (UNDER 8)

Newtown Maroon vs Torquay

 Newtown Maroon put in a great team game this week against a strong opponent.  Some excellent defence by Meya in the first half and great passing out to team mates using the width of the field.  The second half saw Newtown working hard on picking up their opponents and chasing back when Torquay gained possession. Great passing by Freddie and Imogen saw some Newtown team plays reach the attacking zone, with Chris and Nathan in good position and ready to take possession of the ball.  Best Team Player Award to Meya.

Newtown White vs Newtown Gold

 We had a few unfortunate injuries which kept our team down to 5 players this week.  Thanks to Emma for stepping in and playing for our team.  Luckily this was matched by our opponents who also had 5 players.  With less players it meant that the teams did a lot of running – there was no time for being cold this week!

 Some of the highlights of the game were:

  • Positioning, especially Emma who was always providing an option out wide;
  • There was some good trapping and keeping on going, particularly by Maggie and Edie;
  • Ruben and  Nate set up some good play and tackled well this week;
  • Good cheering by Phoenix and Charlotte who were injured on the sidelines.

Some things we are working on are:

  • Our concentration when there are so few players;
  • Picking up our opponents;
  • Setting up options for passing.

 Edie received the Best Team Player Award for her persistence in the second half, good tackling, ball placement and her ability to keep her stick down and keep going.

 Thanks to Newtown Gold for creating some really competitive play and for being such a fair opponents and great sports! We look forward to the school holiday break and welcoming our injured players back for the next match.

 UNDER 11

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown White 4-0

Things went well for Newtown Maroon this week, with improved passing, wide clearances, and generally staying in our positions.  Hitting practice for the last few weeks paid off with some excellent penetrating balls from the backs and halves to generate forward pressure.  And this was capped off by unselfish play around the circle, leading to 4 good team goals, finished off by captain Will (2), Harry and Willo.  The scoreline would have been different if not for an outstanding game in goals by Kasey.  Best Team Player awards this week to Willo and Kasey.

Newtown White vs Newtown Maroon 0-4

Round 9 saw Newtown White playing against Newtown Maroon on a very chilly morning.  White played well with a particularly good game from Isabel and Daniel as the full backs.  Miles had some spectacular attempts at goal but was thwarted each time by Maroon’s goalie.  Max had his first try at goal keeper and did a great job.  White kept working on taking the frees quickly and the wings and forwards focused on trying to keep ahead of the ball.  Great job Imogen on your first game with the team.  White’s new focus for the remaining games will be to spread out more and use load voices to each other so that the whole team works well together.  Well done White for a great effort and well done to Maroon too who proved to be too strong for White on the day.

UNDER 13

Newtown Maroon vs Torquay 8-0

Well a freezing start to the first Saturday of the school holidays must have inspired action amongst Newtown Maroon players!! They were off and running, immediately disadvantaged by a disorganized Torquay team who were on the pitch under staffed and without a goal keeper!! Newtown Maroon played in a strong, attacking style, preventing Torquay any opportunity to move the ball out of their defensive area. Team work at a high level in the first half, with lovely passages of play and good passing between players.

 A six goal first half for Maroon, without any reply from Torquay – goals to Tom, Jamie with a sneaky little well-timed field goal, Amber and a beautiful little touch on the post from Paris, allowed Maroon a very strong lead. Half time comments from the coach, reminding players to use the width of the pitch and wing players to move the ball with more effectiveness at times. Also encouraged a swift response from attack to defense, when Torquay looking like securing some forward movement.

 Less dominant second half by Maroon, with a further 2 goals scored by Tom and Amber, to seal a strong result for Newtown Maroon and ongoing top of the ladder position. Well done finishing so well before the school holiday break and best wishes to Rachel van der Ploeg and Jonah McKinnon for their Wildcats campaigns in the Junior State Championships being held this week.

 Newtown White vs Torquay Tornadoes 2-0

 Play from Newtown White looked very promising from the first touch with fast accurate passing and a desire to keep possession. Players were looking for team mates in space or in a position to run onto the ball.  When there were no safe options forward, the ball was played back and across the field in search of an option forward.  When Torquay did gain possession, tackling was committed and Torquay were under constant pressure from Newtown White.  The majority of the half was played in opposition territory with a few unsuccessful shots on goal.  Torquay had one opportunity to score which was foiled by Josh as he lay in front of goal using all means possible to prevent a goal being scored.

 Newtown White started the second half reinvigorated by juicy navel oranges and were quickly attacking the Torquay goal. Lachy had the Torquay team on the back foot within the first few minutes of the half with a solo run into the D around a couple of defenders. The shot on goal was padded away by the goal keeper, however the pressure resulted in a short corner and long corner in quick succession, with a goal to Lachy the end result.  The team was visibly lifted by taking the lead and soon found themselves in a position to score again. A great pass from Rachel high on the right side of the D back to Lachy was swiftly flicked into the back of the net. Both goals were a great demonstration of team work as they were only made possible by good positional play and passing the ball.  Torquay only had one scoring opportunity in the second half when the Newtown White backs were left exposed by a great through ball from Torquay. Josh’s positioning in goal forced the Torquay centre forward into a difficult shot which went across the face of goal. In a final short corner to Newtown White, it was good to see a variation in play with the ball going first to the top of the D and then being passed forward and right for a shot on goal, albeit unsuccessful.

 This was the first win for the season and all team members have showed a clear improvement over the last couple of games in commitment and application of skills practiced during the week in training. A tremendous game by all of the team and thanks also to Miles and Emma from U13 Maroon for doubling up.

UNDER 15

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown White 0-4

 Tough game this week with our first loss of the season to Newtown White who had a strong team. The first half saw lots of play in our defensive half with some hard work by Bronte, Luke HD, Tom McD and Luka in our last line of defence. The second half saw us manage to enter our forward 25 a few times with some good work by Hudson who was seemingly surrounded by giants!, Miles (in his third game for the day) and Chloe with some great attacks on the wing. Everyone contributed in a hard fought game. Well done all. Thanks to Chloe S, Erin S, Lachie D and Tom C for filling in this week.

 Newtown White vs Newtown Maroon 4-0

 This week’s match saw much contribution from all players, thanks to Amber R for playing with us this week – she played a solid match with some great plays in attack. Bronte came off briefly after an accidental stick to the face from the keeper, but soon when back on to hassle Maroon’s defence. Corey played a steady and composed match in defence, we mixed the positions around a little this week and saw Bella do some great clearances in defence. Jimmy played well and set up some great plays. Thanks to Richard Stella for coaching this week’s match. Scorers this week – Jimmy 2, Bronte 1 & Jesse 1.

Newtown Maroon vs Kardinia 6-9

Newtown White – bye

DIVISION 1 MEN

Newtown Falcons vs Saints Black 3-2

Falcons played Saints Black in round 12 of the Division 1 competition on Sunday afternoon at Stead Park. The Falcons line up was some what changed due to injury, school holidays and clashes with other hockey competitions. Starting the game with only 10 players they held off the second placed Saints until the cavalry arrived  to match the opponent with numbers.

The Falcons scored the fist two goals of the match, both were very skillful runs by Leo beating numerous players to penetrate the D and get shots on goal. In the second half Josh scored another field goal to take the score to 3 nil, however the Saints hit back scoring 2 goals in the second half before full time.

Another great win to the undefeated Falcons showing the depth we have across the mens playing group. They play Saints Red this week on Sunday night 6:30pm at Stead Park.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN

Newtown Falcons vs Bellarine 5-2

The game started well with the scoring a quick goal. It was a very hard fought game.  An even team game resulted in a win of 5-2 against Bellarine.  Bec scored 2 goals, Elena scored 2 goals and Bonnie scored 1 goal.  Great play by Katie and  Tess created lots of attack and great team play finished it off.

DIVISION 2 MEN

Newtown Maroon vs Saints 0-4

Maroon played a great game against Saints on the weekend not even a late downpour could dampen our spirits. David had an outstanding game with a near miss that would have been the goal of the season. We had the top team scrambling but their players stepped up after a goal by the Geelong 1st rep player. We were 1-0 down at half time. A good solid performance by Chris C and Alex in the second kept us in the game but Saints proved too strong and we finished 4-0 down.

Newtown White vs Corio 4-1

Newtown White played the first half on a water logged pitch for the third week in a row.  Luckily avoiding the hail that hit the match before us.  For the most part the team played well using short passing to good effect.  It was good to have the younger guys in the forward line this week to give us some additional options in attack.  We still need to look at varying the way we go into the D and the effect of drawing defenders in to flood the goal area.  Don showed his class with a terrific save on the line again this week.  We remain second on the ladder one game behind Saints and one game in front of Geelong.

DIVISION 2 WOMEN

Newtown Maroon vs Torquay 3-2

In between the downpours Saturday night Maroon faced a hard match against Torquay. Torquay were quick out of the blocks to score. Maroon regrouped and with a fast running forward line spearheaded by Kirsty, Rachel and Katey a reply goal was answered. The tussles were a bit tough with a green card awarded against Torquay.

In the second half Maroon scored an early goal with quick work between the inners and centre. Defence came under attack but great sweeps from Hil, Andy, Bron and Jacinta kept Torquay’s scoring chances down. Great switches out to the wings in Sarah and Deanne and Pam playing a pivotal role in the centre. A tough but well deserved win for Maroon

Newtown White vs Saints 1-1

 Another great game by Newtown White with excellent team play and good use of a shorter passing game.  Cait scored the first goal for Newtown early in the game, in the right place and with a great low sweep to put it in the net.  Great defence by Jenny, Bron K and Emmason was well backed up by full backs Tracey and Colleen pushing up and meeting Saints attacks early.  Excellent chasing by Rachel and Steffi put pressure on Saints to keep the ball heading in to our attacking zone, and great running and possession skills by Amber, Phoebe and Julie created many attacks.  Saints were able to score in the second half, and despite renewed enthusiasm and effort in attack, Newtown were unable to score again.  Great work by all players.

Newtown Gold – bye

Match Reports June 21 & 22

MINKEY

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown Gold

Special thanks to Avah from Joeys who helped us out this morning.  She did a great job of keeping her stick on the ground ready for the ball, and hit some lovely free passes.  Imogen worked hard in the centre passing wide to the wings Paige and Meyah. Freddie made some great saves in front of goal and Brandon did a great job of chasing back and defending.  Fantastic game, with everyone working hard, so the Best Team Player Award this week went to the whole team.

Newtown Gold vs Newtown Maroon

A very evenly matched game. They all seemed to be having a lot of fun too. The passing is really improving. Eoin and Adrian worked well together in the forward line. Basyl made many great shots at goal. Lochlan, Emma & Grace backed up well. There was great improvement in Emma’s overall skills this week, winning her Best Team Player for this week.

Newtown White vs Kardinia Kookaburras

It was a warmer morning that greeted us this week.  We were a few players short, but so were the other team, so it worked out well – thanks to our opponents for lending us a team member.  We had some great passages of play, particularly from Oliver and Maggie who are doing a great job of keeping the flow of the game going.

Our Coach Kellie was pleased with the hard work we are putting into all aspects of our game.  We are working on:

  • Spreading out and leading out wide;
  • Marking and putting pressure on our opponents;
  • Looking sideways for our teammates and asking for the ball.

This week:  Maggie received the Best Team Player Award for her looking sideways for other players and asking for the ball – well done.

 UNDER 11

Newtown Maroon Vs Torquay  1-3.
Newtown fought well against a strong Torquay side on Saturday.  Kasey had a busy time in goals and made several great saves.  However the midfield and forward pressure from Torquay resulted in a number of entries and short corners, culminating in 3 goals for the game.  We will need to brush up on our short corners this week.  Angus was again solid at centre half, and dropped back to join Olivia in making some good defensive clearances.  Robbo displayed very good timing from full back with some penetrating firm hits and pushes.  And when we finally broke through late in the first half it lead to a short corner, and a cool head from Zeke to pass across to Logan ended up in our only goal.  In the second half there was some effective playing on from frees by Jemma and Willo, and some great running from Will and Logan and Amelia.  Harry made a few excellent interceptions late in the game and looked likely to score, showing great ball control, but it wasn’t to be.  Overall a fair result against a good side to whom we lost 8-2 earlier in the year.  Best Team Player Awards to Olivia and Zeke.

Newtown White vs Kardinia 5-0

Newtown received a forfeit from Kardinia, with the holidays forcing a lack of players for them.

UNDER 13

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown White 4-1
Well it was the Under 13 Newtown Derby with Maroon against White. Top of the ladder Maroon has been looking strong in recent weeks, but had the handicap of our goal keeper unavailable this week, in addition to another absence.  Jonah McKinnon was given the task of ‘kicking fullback’ with coach Marcus Lanyon making the decision to forgo the goal keeper for the match.

 Maroon started strong as usual with a lot of play in our forward half. Some lovely passing and running forward allowed several opportunities to score from penalty corners. Tom M started the score building with a lovely field goal, with a second to follow from an opportunistic and clever Amber! Without the goal keeper, White was able to move the ball quickly into their half, and capitalize, scoring a goal before half time. Great efforts by White were thwarted by the strength of Maroon’s defense and forward running.

 Half time words by the coach was building on the confidence of the team as well as encouraged some quick passing rather than trying to ‘run through’ opportunistic players! Second half  saw another solid performance by Maroon, with some lovely skill shown by Rachel to keep the ball in the forward half. Further goals by Tom M and Rachel, finished off another convincing win 4:1. Well done Maroon and best wishes to an injured Lachie in Newtown White.

 Newtown White vs Newtown Maroon 1-4

Despite the cold early morning start, Maroon came out full of beans and were soon attacking the White goal. Josh charged down the first shot on goal but Maroon put away the deflected ball for their first goal. A second goal to Maroon came very soon afterwards.  White did however strike back immediately after the resumption of play when Henry received a ball high in the Maroon half and was able to run it into an empty goal, having dodged the kicking fullback.  This was the only foray into the Maroon half and White spent the remainder of the half defending their own goal.  Maroon had a number of short corners but strong defence by White prevented any further goals.

 White were again under pressure at the start of the second half and Josh was forced to put all of his goal keeping skills into practice, gloving, kicking, diving and hitting away shots on goal.  When White did gain possession they struggled to penetrate the Maroon half. The White forwards were drawn back to their own goal in an effort to assist in defending the relentless attack on goal by Maroon. The pressure eventually led to a further two goals to Maroon at the back end of the second half.  Another toughgame where White were forced to play most of the game defending their own goal.  Final score 4:1 to Newtown Maroon.

UNDER 15

Newtown Maroon vs Kardinia Blue 1-1

The first half was hard fought with no score from either team. The second half saw Newtown working hard to implement the coach’s instructions and resulted in many great passages of play, with some very near misses. A great goal from Matt showing his silky skills. The game continued with some nice passing out wide and hard running from Hudson and Erin. Miles continued to pressure their full backs really well. The back line was put under a bit more pressure from the opposition which resulted in a goal to Kardinia to even the game. Great team effort.

Newtown White vs Kardinia Maroon 0-2

This week’s match was a tough one, with Kardinia doing most of the attacking. Luka joined the team this week as GK, making a number of saves. Well done Luka. Great game by Corey, who was “steller” in defence!!!!!!! Alex and Remi were steady with their pressure on Kardinia.  Everyone got in and had a go, good effort.

UNDER 17

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown White 8-3

An entertaining game was witnessed between the 2 Newtown U17 teams. A few ins and outs saw Patrick stand in for Will in the Goals. Gus was the first to score for us taking a penalty stroke 5 minutes in. White responded with a few solid runs only to be cut out by Baiden sweeping across the D. Emma was only available for the first half and showed some great skill in midfield and attacks on D, she finished with 2 goals before having to leave to play Geelong Rep. In the second half Chris and Thomas worked well in attack for us and were rewarded with 2 goals apiece and the White team also started to counter attack and snuck 3 past Patrick to finish the Game 8-3 in favour of Maroon.

Newtown White vs Newtown Maroon 3-8

Whites were unlucky early in the game despite great defending by Brodie, Beth’s save on the line saw a penalty and goal to Maroon. Settling down after the hectic start, Whites displayed good passing play by Alex, Jonah and Luke – Alex reading the play well, winning possession passing long to Miles on the wing. More great work by Courtney this week, getting in perfect position on post passing quickly to Sean to bang in a goal. Whites had to restructure, maintain position and keep the positive talk going regardless of the score in the second half. Baden, Alex, Dan and Sean were all chasing hard running in to open space to create chances, Baden eventually rewarded with a goal and Sean finished the game with two. Overall, it was a good game but Whites were outplayed this week by a stronger Maroon forward line. Thanks to Luke and Jonah for filling in.

DIVISION 1 MEN

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 7-2

Falcons defeated Torquay 7-2 in the Division 1 competition on Sunday afternoon at Stead Park. It was a battle of the young and skillful against the older experienced playing group of Torquay. In the end the pace was too much for Torquay as they were overcome by the pace and intensity of the reigning premiers. Goal scorers for the game were: Hamish 3, Angus 1, James 1, Will 1 and Adrian 1.

The Falcon play second placed Saints Black this Sunday 2:00pm at Stead Park.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN

Newtown Falcons vs Saints 7-2

The game started well, although even with Saints only having 9 players they managed to get the first goal in the first few minutes.   Then the girls started to fire, scoring 3 goals by half time.  The second half was fast with Saints scoring another goal to our 4. Great team play by Courtney who passed off to team mates allowing them to score, as well as snagging 4 goals for herself. A good team effort. Thanks to Amy for helping us out and playing a great game.

DIVISION 2 MEN

Newtown Maroon vs Golden Plains 1-2

Newtown White vs Saints 2-2

Newtown White managed to hold our own against a determined Saints on Saturday.  With weather conditions similar to the week before the pitch was again saturated during the first half.  With a couple of (older) injured players not at 100% and at least one key player on holidays in Bali we did well to be competitive and hold out for a 2 all draw.  We are still also trying to go in through the top of the D against good defence so despite having the majority of the play in the first half saints scored first.  In response to this Nik Hinett scored a great diving desperation goal from the base line.  Saints scored from a penalty corner in the second half and then again in response after the umpire letting a few corner decisions go to advantage Ben O’Sullivan put the ball up past the keeper from the pack to level.

DIVISION 2 WOMEN

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown Gold 2-3

Pitched against Newtown Gold, the girls from Newtown Maroon knew that this was going to be a tough match from the outset.  Joined by Kellie and Sharon, who kindly played for our team, Newtown Maroon started strongly led by great attacking play from Rachel.  At times Rachel appeared to singlehandedly take on the entire Newtown Gold defence and it was one of these attacking runs which set up a short corner from which our team’s first goal was scored.  A strong hit from Katey at the top of the circle was deflected in by Deanne (again well positioned on the left post).  This drew the scores at 1-1 after Gold had scored a soft goal : providing a timely reminder that we need to play the whistle and allow for advantage to be played.

It was terrific to have Kirsty back in the team after a break due to injury and Kirsty had a great second half playing high on the right wing, bringing the ball up the line and across into the circle.  Katey enjoyed a series of strong runs ably assisted by Rachel and Katey scored an excellent goal to have the teams level at 2-2.  Hill and Katrina provided solid cover in defence and Edna used her kick well to clear the ball from the goal on a number of occasions.  A late goal to Gold saw the score at 3-2 and sealed their victory : a great game enjoyed by all.

Newtown Gold vs Newtown Maroon 3-2

It was a terrific game between Gold and Maroon on Sunday.  Lots of good run through the middle brought with it plenty of forward attacks, but scoring was tough.  In defence, Dana, Bron and Meg were terrific and made it very tough for the Maroons to penetrate the circle.  It was close for the whole game but Gold came away with a 3-2 win thanks to a last minute goal from Meredith.  Meredith ended up with two for the game with a brilliant single to Bron K.  Thanks to Claire for filling in as our goalie and kudos to Sharon for playing for the Maroons to even up numbers.

 Newtown White vs Torquay 2-0

A great game by Newtown White with the benefit of a full team and interchange players.  Thanks to Julie and Bron C for filling in. Newtown White began a little hesitantly with some indecisive marking in defence but soon settled to a steady style of game, with good focus on the ball gaining possession in the midfield.  Tracey and Bron in defence pushed up into attack to cut off Torquay attacks before they posed a major threat with Kellie, Katelyn, Jenny and Julie playing solid hockey in the midfield.  Great positioning on the forward line by Steffi and Phoebe with excellent passing from the midfield.  Excellent skills on the wing by Amber worked the ball into attack beautifully with Rachel, Cait and Erin making nice passes and setting up play in front of the goal.  It was very hard to pick best players as everyone did a great job and worked really hard.

Match Reports June 14/15

Highlights of the Week

The Division 1 Men and Division 2 Women Newtown Gold continue to put in some excellent performances and the U13 Maroon team had a great game this week too.  The U15 White game was very impressive for the teamwork and skills which players are developing.  Well done all.

Why not go along and watch the D1 Men this week in their match against Torquay – 3.30 pm on Sunday at Stead Park.  With the star-studded line-up they have, we could all learn something to help our own game.

Minkey

Newtown Gold vs Torquay
A very cold, wet & tough game for the Gold team this week. Again there was good passing between the forwards (Basyl, Adrian, Eoin & Lochlan). Emma & Grace’s defence skills are improving every week. Best Team Player this week went to Basyl.

Newtown White vs Golden Plains.

It was cold and wet for the 7th game of the season for Minkey White V Golden Plains and a very evenly played match.  We did our best to stay warm! Our Coach Kellie was pleased with the way we called out in loud voices for the ball.  There was some excellent stopping of the ball in defence and some really nice “running on” when we got the ball.

 We are working on:

  • “stop, look, listen and pass off” skills so that we are quick to get the play moving;
  • Looking for our team mates when we have free passes and setting up play;
  • Looking forward to where we want to pass the ball.

Overall it was a great match! Nate Harding received the Best Team Player Award for his awesome defending skills – well done.

Newtown Maroon vs Kardinia Kookaburras

A very cold morning for our young stars but great focus on the ball in defence by Imogen and Meya stopped many of Kardinia’s attempts to score.  Excellent free passes from defence got the ball out to Nathan and Michael on the wings and some nice work in the midfield by Paige and Brandon led to some forward moves for Newtown.  Chris and Freddie worked hard to gain possession and pass to team mates.  Best Team Player Award shared by Imogen and Meya.

Newtown White vs Geelong College 0-1

Round 7 had Newtown White playing against Geelong College on a very chilly morning.  There was some great play with everyone working hard to hang on to the ball longer and using loud voices to call to one another.  Everyone seems to be getting the hang of taking frees quickly and keeping play out of the middle.  College scored a goal in the first half but Newtown came together well to stop them from scoring again and although we didn’t have a win, our team work continues to improve.  Special mention to  Charlotte and Claudia who won Best Team Player awards for their consistent and courageous performance and to Amber who umpired her first game.

Newtown Maroon – bye

 Under 13

Newtown Maroon vs Bellarine 10-0

Newtown White vs Torquay 0-3

 Torquay started strongly with a barrage of shots on goal in the first 5 minutes from both general play and a short corner, with the 4th attempt on goal shot finding its way past Josh.  Newtown White were stunned into action from the restart and made their way into the Torquay half, but were not able to penetrate the D.  Play then moved swiftly to the Newtown defensive end where Torquay were awarded successive short corners. The first was well cleared by Josh but the second resulted in goal after a string of well structured passes. Newtown White also lost Amelia in the short corner melee after being struck on the wrist by a Torquay stick. Newtown White didn’t have any substitutes available and were forced to play the remainder of the game a player down.  Play for the remainder of the half was evenly matched with both Newtown White and Torquay having shots on goal through short corners.  Newtown White executed successive short corners well with Tom pushing fast and accurate balls to Lachy for shots on goal, but the Torquay goal keeper was equal to the task.  There was evidence of Hockey World Cup viewing in some of this play!

 The start of the second half was marked by the start of rain, which didn’t abate for the rest of the game.  Newtown White played with Tom and Malcolm forward, both covering a wing and the centre forward position.  Malcolm stepped up under the added pressure and played his best game of the season with a number of decisive runs along the right wing. Newtown White held their own throughout the majority of the second half and mounted strong challenges to Torquay in the mid field, with notable efforts by Lachy and Rachel.  Torquay were however able to grind down a depleted Newtown White team and score a final goal near the end of the game to finish 3:0 up.

 Although playing for the majority of the game with a player short, the real difference between the sides was in their hunger for the ball.   Torquay were determined to challenge for the ball and keep possession, which provided them with opportunities to score.  A tough game but great effort by all in cold wet conditions.

Newtown Maroon vs Saints 3 – 3

The game got off to a slow start for Newtown with Saints scoring 2 early goals and a 3rd one coming later in the half. The second half started with some excellent passing and running to get us 2 quick goals to Lachlan and Thomas P which put us back in the game. Our third goal from Monique came midway through the half to make us level with Saints. Our second half saw a lot more running, passing, talking and use of the ball out wide. Despite quite a number of shots on goal late in the game we were unable to get through Saints goalkeeper and we ended a very good game with a 3 all draw.

 Newtown White vs Kardinia Blue 2-2

 It was a very close match this week. At half time the score was level with 1 all.  Alex scored the first goal from a deflection on a short corner. Kardinia scored again in the second half. The match was all but over, with less than a minute left in the game, we managed a short corner and converted into a goal by Lachie. Saskia had quite a bit of action in goals this week, with a number of saves. Great game by Alex who was relentless in hassling the opposition and Tom M and Corey were solid in defence.

Well done to everyone, particularly like to thank Tom McD for playing with us this week and the U/13 crew – Amber, Tom M, Lachie & Miles R – much appreciated and all contributed greatly.

Newtown Maroon – bye

Newtown White vs Torquay 1-1

Newtown began strongly with many attacking opportunities and good passing play by Baden, Adam, Dan and Patrick backed up well by Miles, with Alex and Courtney on the wings. Brodie was kept busy, needing to work hard in goal as Torquay put a lot of pressure on with several chances skilfully cleared, combined with solid defending by Noah and Beth. Newtown had good momentum with the majority of play, trying to work their way through the congested middle towards goal – nil nil at half time. Second half was much the same, however Newtown made the most of a short corner – trapped by Chris, passed quickly by Baden to Patrick for a well-earned goal. A late corner and great defending with chaos in goal and Torquay were able to equalise to draw the game. Thanks to Noah, Chris, Miles and Patrick for playing for us this week and Don for coaching at short notice.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Corio 10-0

Falcons defeated Corio 10 nil in the Division 1 competition on Sunday night at Stead Park. Similar to the standard set by the Men’s Australian hockey team at the World Cup the Falcons scored the first goal only 2 minutes into the game and finished the first half 5-0 up. Coach Peter challenged the group to maintain the intensity in the second half and not to concede a goal for the game.  The Falcons responded by converting a further 5 unanswered goals in the second half. Goal scorers for the game were Josh 3, Hamish 2, Chriso 2, Harry 1, Nic 1, Leo 1.  The Falcons play third placed Torquay at 3.30 pm this Sunday at Stead Park.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 1-1

Division 2 Men

Newtown Maroon vs Torquay 2 – 1-5.

We had a cold game at Stead Park where Torquay proved a little warmer on the field. A great game from Lachlan who was solid all game, then our new wing David scoring a great goal. It was a very enjoyable game with Maroon smiling throughout, though it was fairly one sided with Torquay winning 5-1.

Newtown White vs Golden Plains 7-1

Newtown White had a strong hit out against Golden Plains this week, winning 7-1.  A couple of the younger rep players were not able to play on Saturday, despite this and the wet conditions we had more people wanting to play than spots on the team sheet.  The start of the first half was bogged down in Newtoon’s half initially with a lot of water on the pitch.  After a few good overhead balls and with the ground starting to drain the game opened up with Newtown using the back pass and switch to open up the game.  Once the game opened up Newtown controlled the majority of the play with those running off their marking players in the forward line rewarded with getting the ball into the goal.  Nic did this the most successfully and scored 3 times.  The back and half line also played well as a group controlling the movement of the ball and by not pushing high allowing the forwards to run into space.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Maroon – bye

Newtown Gold vs Newtown White 8-0

Great game from Gold this week who had the benefit of a near full-strength team for the friendly against Newtown White. It was particularly nice to have our captain, Kelly, back, who put in a BOG performance; with all our young guns firing this week we were able to regularly attack the goals and convert on eight occasions. Some great defence also ensured nothing slipped through into the Gold goal. Thanks to Saskia who donned the keepers pads for us at the last minute. Four terrific goals from Kate (bringing her to 10 for the season after 10 rounds) and singles to Peta, Julie, Dom and Tess.

Newtown White vs Newtown Gold 0-8

Unavailability of some regular defence players forced Newtown White to adjust and try new positions.  Gold players found opportunities to create space in front of goals but great work by Jenny and Jacinta in defence, backed up by Claire, denied Gold many more scoring opportunities.  Tireless work in the midfield by Kellie, Katelyn and Emmason saw Newtown White gain possession and with great position and passing from Rachel, Erin and Phoebe some advances were made into the attacking zone.  Steffi and Cait provided some forward thrust but unfortunately without results on the scoreboard.  A really hard game for White but great to see that everyone continued to give 100% effort.

Match Reports May 31/ June 1

This weekend saw some great efforts from our players.  Good work by the D2 Women’s Gold team who fronted up for 2 matches in 2 days to play the match postponed 2 weeks ago.  The D2 Women’s Maroon team did this last week – shows what great commitment our members have.

Highlights of the round included:

  • great goalkeeping by Ely for U11 White – a perfect stop in front of goal with no prior training in the position.
  • Newtown White (U15) had a fantastic game too – well done all.
  • great efforts by junior players, Erin and Amber who played their first senior games

MINKEY

Newtown White vs College White.

Everyone is commenting on how well Newtown White are playing and improving week by week.  We are seeing some real great teamwork developing as each week passes.  Our ball skills and ‘reading’ of the play is also improving.  Our Coach Kellie was most impressed with:

  • The way we stayed in our positions;
  • Our calling for the ball (in big loud voices!);
  • Our play out wide;
  • The way we trapped and passed (special mentioned to Liam).

Liam received the Best Team Player Award for his impressive skills with trapping and passing the ball and lining up some really good play.

Newtown Maroon vs Golden Plains

Newtown Maroon are improving their focus on the game and their passing every week. Some great position by Paige and nice passing earned her the Best Team Player award this week.  Excellent defence by Newtown stopped many shots at goal but Golden Plains’ strong attack created many pressure situations for us.  Newtown Maroon are beginning to move the ball wider and Brandon made some great passes to team mates in good position. Thanks to Golden Plains for loaning us a player to balance the numbers.

Newtown Gold v Geelong

A tough game this week, but the team persisted and managed to score some goals. There was good passing between Eoin & Basyl as well as Adrian & Lochlan. Emma showed great improvement in her defence. The team are really starting to stay in their positions. Grace passed the ball with much more power this week & stayed in her position throughout the game winning her the Best Team Player award.

 UNDER 11

Newtown White vs Golden Plains 1-2

Round 6 was a great game for Newtown White.  Everyone worked well to open up the field and there was some impressive use of the ball.  The whole team did an admirable job of keeping the ball out of the middle and there was a lot more play out wide.  There was also a lot more dribbling and passing to each other.  Special mention to Ely who took on the role of goalie for the first time.  Despite their hard work and great passing, Newtown White went down to Golden Plains 1-2 but overall it was the best game of the season.

Newtown Maroon Vs Kardinia  0-0
Although a scoreless draw, Newtown dominated a lot of the play, but were thwarted on many occasions by excellent goalkeeping by Kardinia. In a closely fought match, play was again congested in the centre early on before the Maroons began to implement their strategies of wide clearances, more passing and running together up the wings to create scoring opportunities.  Some firm passing from Harry and Angus, and excellent trapping by Robbo broke the game apart in the latter stages, and although there were no conversions, the excitement in the crowd was palpable.  Team player awards to Sarah and Kasey who passed the pads onto Zeke who had a quiet game in goals but looked very promising at training.  Congratulations to Willo on 25 games.  We look forward to his next catchphrase, this time reminding the team not to crowd each other, to join his previous beauties “Eye Stick Wide” (meaning Eyes on the ball, Sticks on the ground, pass Wide), and with clearances, “NAG, NAG, NAG” (Never Across Goals).

UNDER 13

Newtown Maroon vs Golden Plains 2-1
An energetic game this week with players inspired by recent JCC and Wildcats selections I think!! Coming up against top ranked team Golden Plains, created some hunger for another good performance. There was great forward movement of the ball with the majority of play in Newtown’s half.  Amber and Rachel created fantastic options moving forward. Strong and consistent team play saw Tom Mahon finishing off nicely with 2 goals scored in first half. There were further opportunities to score from penalty corners with Newtown Maroon having 2 awarded to them in first half. This is an area that will be one to focus on!! Coaches and GK Austin, reminded the half backs and inners of their roles to make opposition players accountable by manning up and creating pressure. This was built on in second half but Golden Plains had some success in scoring, to finish the game 2:1. Great to see some really lovely hockey and team work being played out.

Newtown White vs Geelong College 1-2

It was a tentative start to game for Newtown White and Geelong College quickly capitalised on the lack of structure in the midfield and scored within the first five minutes.  Play for the majority of the first half was in Newtown White territory and Caleb and Austin did a sterling job in defending the goal during general play and a short corner.  Newtown White found their groove late in the first half and made a couple of forays into the Geelong College half.  A signature move up the left wing eventually yielded a short corner to Newtown White, which was converted into a goal through some excellent work by Erin.

Newtown White played their more natural game at the start of the second half with incisive runs along the wings and well placed crosses in front of goal.  They were unlucky not to score with shots from Tom, Erin and Rachel only narrowly missing goal.  Play during the middle of the second half was back and forth with neither team generating any genuine scoring opportunities.  Late in the second half Geelong College scored again but had to pepper Austin with shots to find the back of the net.   Newtown White were awarded a short corner just before the final whistle but unfortunately were not able to score.

Notable efforts throughout the whole game by Emily, Chloe and Amelia who worked tirelessly and were not afraid to contest the ball.  Thanks also to Austin from U13 Maroon for goal keeping at late notice and three U11 recruits Will, Robbo and Willo for covering a few missing U13 regulars. Despite not coming away with a victory, it was a competitive game and Newtown White did well considering the relatively young team fielded.

 UNDER 15

Newtown White vs Bellarine Storm 11-0
Bellarine were significantly younger with the majority of their players being U/13, that said, both teams showed great sportsmanship. We dominated the play and that was reflected on the scoreboard, it was fabulous to see 8 of our players score this week. Scorers this week – Jesse 3, Laurence 2 and individuals to Alex, Bella, Bronte, Corey, Laura and Tom McD. Well done team.  Thanks to Tom McD for playing with us this week.

Special mention to Don for coaching this week, his morning started coaching U/15’s, followed by U/17’s, played seniors and finished with canteen duty – your contribution to the club is greatly appreciated.

Newtown Maroon vs Kardinia Maroon 1-1

UNDER 17

Newtown Maroon played Torquay this week and came away with a 3-2 win. Torquay had a stronger team this week and played out a hard fought contest. Luke T started at wing and deflected in great goal from an  Angus cross-ball early in the first half, Torquay got one back to level the scores 1 all at half time. The second half saw Emma score an individual goal starting from the 25 and Angus followed up shortly after with another. Torquay scored late in the game, but our defence held well with Patrick, Nic, and Amy keeping the ball rebounding out of our defence till the final whistle blew.

Newtown White vs Saints 7-3

A great game by Newtown with lots of skill, passing well, finding space and applying plenty of pressure in the attacking half. Brodie had to work hard all game with several attacking shots around the D, aided by Oliver, Beth and Jack defending well. A lot of chasing by Alex, Miles and Jack winning possession with Baden, Sean and Dan working through the Saints back line banging in shots at goal and getting results. Newtown made good use of the wings with Courtney in great position and it was good to have Amy back on the team. Goals to Dan, Amy, Sean, Alex and Baden. Well done Whites and congratulations on a solid win against a strong opponent. Thanks go to Jack, Corey and Oliver for filling in and to Amy’s dad for doing canteen at short notice.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons – Bye

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Corio 2-1

Division 2 Men

Newtown White vs Newtown Maroon 7-1

Newtown White were determined this week to play to our usual game plan with a team that is now mostly settled, apart from a couple of injuries and rep team absences.  Credit to Maroon that they kept fighting right through the match also in what ended up being a hard played game by both sides.  Many of the mid-field strategies White have been working on came together well on the weekend with a few lessons still to be learnt up front (like go around the defence / goalie rather than through).  Credit goes to the entire forward line this week that kept taking it to the Maroon defence even though there were many more goals saved than scored.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown White 2-1

A big running game from both teams with forwards setting up a lot of combinations in the circle. Great defence from Bron and Katrina to get the ball up to the forward line. Halves Andy, Pam and Jac were under the pump and put up a lot of play. Fast legs from Rachel, Katey and Nicola saw some quick runs at goal with Sarah and Deanne well placed for deflections. A big thank you to Hillary for playing for the Whites. And welcome back Pammy!

Newtown White vs Newtown Maroon 1-2

Another great effort from Newtown White, missing a few players, so thanks to Hil for filling in.  Great defence by Colleen and Hil, who pushed upfield and cut off Maroon attacks early.  Good midfield position and controlled play by Katelyn and Kellie put the ball into attack, and Phoebe continues to give maximum effort, running to space and passing to team mates.  Great work by Rachel and Cait in the second half especially allowed Newtown White to use the width of the field to get into attack and create a number of scoring opportunities. The ‘never give up’ attitude of the Newtown White players paid off with Phoebe scoring a goal in a scramble in front of goal after a short corner right on full time.  Well done Newtown White.

Newtown Gold vs Golden Plains 1-0

It was a tough game for a depleted Gold side; many thanks to Penny and Nerida for doubling up from the Falcons and to Amber and Erin who stepped up to play their first senior games and did a great job.  It was an even first half; we had the better of the play in the second half, earning countless short corners, but had a tough time converting.  Terrific run forward again from Dom and Tess, really solid defence from Bron and Meg and some great work through the middle from Penny and Nerida kept the ball in our half for most of the game.  A terrific goal from Peta in the dying minutes, followed by some hard work in defence, secured a win for Gold against an impressive Golden Plains outfit.

D2 Womens Gold vs Saints 0-0 (rescheduled)

More than a fortnight after our full and fresh complement of players were sent home from the College field we scrambled together a team and took to Stead Park Monday night for our Round 7 clash against the Saints.  With some weary bodies following Sunday’s tough clash against Golden Plains, Gold did well to run out a draw against a fresher Saints who were coming off a round 9 bye.  Tess took on acting captain duties and put on a superb performance in the centre, coming painfully close to scoring a field goal on more than one occasion; Kate also had a great run on the wing, creating plenty of opportunities up forward.  Dana put on a brilliant show on the backline, keeping the ball well out of the Saints’ circle for most of the game.  Many thanks to Ainsley, who re-joined Gold for a delayed final game before moving up to the Falcons, to Penny B, who doubled up twice for us this weekend and provided great run and skill through the middle and to Bec, who we also borrowed from the Falcons and whose run up forward was simply sensational.

Match Reports May 24 & 25

This week saw some great efforts by players under difficult circumstances – and a fantastic display of skillful hockey by our Division 1 Men’s team.  Are they on track to win another Premiership?

Minkey

Newtown Gold v Kardinia Kookaburras.  Newtown Gold are showing great team work, with their game improving as players learn to stay in position, allowing great passing to team mates.  The players worked hard, persisting in their tasks and approach to the ball which lead to goal conversion. Emma demonstrated some good defensive skills to be awarded the Best Team Player.

Newtown White vs  Kardinia Kangaroos.  Newtown White players are really working well, our play momentum is improving and we are putting our sticks down and having a real go! Our Coach Kellie was most impressed with:

  • Our second half of the game where we spread out more and looked for players to pass to;
  • Our marking skills – especially Ruben’s covering of players;
  • We had good movement and kept going.

Edie received the Best Team Player Award for her impressive game skills, enthusiasm and momentum with the ball .

Newtown Maroon vs Geelong College Green. Newtown worked hard against a strong opposition, and showed much improved marking and focus on the ball and the direction of play.  Great work at full back by Nathan, who was ready to take quick free passes and direct the ball away from the goal.  Some nice passing down the right side saw Newtown make a couple of runs into the scoring zone, and Freddie picked up the ball behind the College defence and ran on to score.  Good position on the wings by Michael and Brandon helped Newtown to spread the opposition and create some spaces to hit through.  Best Team Player Award to Nathan.

Under 11

Newtown White vs Torquay Tornadoes 0-4.  Newtown White played another great game in Round 5 against the Torquay Tornadoes – all players worked hard on playing keepings off and manning up and there was lots of good play out wide and calling out to each other.  Those playing in defence played a fantastic game and everyone else was focused on spreading out and creating space and not getting drawn into the centre.  Special mention to Daniel who played his first game of hockey. Unfortunately, despite everyone working well as a team, Newtown couldn’t match Torquay 0-4.

Newtown Maroon Vs Geelong College  2-5. Newtown Maroon were quickly on the defensive against a well drilled College side who dominated the possession and midfield in the first half.  Everyone tried very hard, and despite good defence by Zeke and Angus across the half line, we struggled to convert passes to move into attack, and were 3 goals down at the break.  Inspiration from coach Claire saw far improved teamwork in the second half. Forward passing, and following up, from Robbo lead to a quick entry from Taylah onto Harry who scored.  Soon after he made a desperate lunge to clear the ball on the last line of defence – great effort Harry.  Our second team goal at the hand of Will saw us match College with two goals apiece in the second half, despite finishing the game a few players short. Overall a very pleasing effort and exciting game despite the scoreline. Best Team Player Awards shared between Harry, Zeke, Jemma and Will.

Under 13

Newtown Maroon were missing several players this week due to JCC and Wildcat commitments but the team all pulled together to beat Kardinia 4-0. Great play in the forward line from Tom and Hailey. Tom managed to score 3 goals with the fourth goal coming from a short corner shot by Jamie half way through the last half. Byron did some great tackles in defense and with some excellent marking from Emma, Harry and Paris the Maroons managed to keep Kardinia scoreless. Thanks to Hailey and Will for playing their first games of the year, both played well.

Newtown White vs Bellarine. Newtown White was set a mammoth challenge today with only four U13 team members available to play. Thankfully reinforcements arrived with 8 x U11s keen and ready to go. Darren Bradbury has graciously volunteered as coach
for the day. The game started with a frenzy of sticks going in all directions. Some calls were made from Coach Darren Bradbury to spread out and make positions. Bellarine had many experienced players up forward and were able to score some early goals. Emily and Rachael fought gallantly to defend under pressure. Newtown had a couple of opportunities to score in 1st half but Bellarine’s defence held.

In the 2nd half Newtown clicked together as a team much better, Matthew hitting many nice long shots to clear the packs and create some running and Max hitting wide to the running Robbo & Willo duo from U11. There were many highlights of this game, but it was especially good to see how the 4 U13 team members rose to the challenge and should not be disappointed with the 8-0 to Bellarine final score. Another highlight was seeing how the U11 players stepped up, some playing their first U13 game on the big synthetic field. Well done to all players.

Newtown Maroon vs Bellarine. Newtown got off to a good start with a lot of running out wide and great ball movement up forward, finishing with a couple of goals to Thomas and Oliver putting one into the top of the net. The defence were put under some pressure by the Bellarine forwards but some great tackles by Luke H/D and Tom Mac prevented a lot of possible goals. Again our ball movement out of defence and into our forward line is working really well, with many attacks starting with the fullbacks through to our halves in Monique, Cassidy and Bronte and onto our hard running forwards Luke and Erin out wide on the wing. A really good effort by all, with players playing in different positions due to us missing some team members who were playing at Junior Championships. Final score 4-1 to Newtown. Goals to Thomas P, Erin and Oliver.

Newtown White vs Saints 1 – 1. Round 5 was an even contest against the Saints. At halftime both teams were still scoreless. Bella put in a sturdy effort all match and  scored in the second half, with the assistance of Alex and Bronte, both of whom hassled the Saints defence with strong plays in attack. Tom M put in a solid performance and was well supported by Eneko on the wing. Our defence was tight thanks to Corey, Luke, Nathan and Remi who all kept the Saints forwards on their toes. Austin had the Goal Keeping sorted with a few clearances, great effort Austin. The Saints levelled the match with only a few minutes left in the game. Thanks to Don for coaching and special mention to Eneko, Luke and Tom M for helping us field a team this week. Wonderful contribution by all players this week, well done team.

Newtown Maroon vs Saints – forfeit by Newtown.

Newtown White vs Kardinia 3-8. From the start, Newtown was under the pump from the Kardinia forwards but worked really well together with great defending by Beth, Sean, Baden and Remi and fantastic saves from Brodie in goal. A strong clearance from Baden through to Sean, running flat out with only the goalie to beat, and his shot at goal was unlucky. More great defensive work by Brodie, Beth and Remi, repeatedly deflecting a strong attack until Kardinia got their second goal through. Skillful passing by Dan to Sean, scoring two quick goals to level the score just before half time. The second half got underway with another quick goal to Kardinia and Brodie busy shouting instructions to the team. Great tackling and determination on the wings by Alex, Andoni and Bronte with Kelly and Dan working tirelessly. A late short corner to Newtown saw Sean bang in his third goal but Kardinia were too strong in the finish. Good pressure and perseverance today by all players, winning possession and playing hard despite being down in numbers with some very tired legs. Thanks to Remi and Bronte for filling in at short notice.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Saints Red. The gap between top and bottom of the ladder was realised on the weekend when the Falcons convincingly beat Saints Red 18-0. The Falcons scored 12 of the 18 goals in the first half to seal the fate of the red, white and black early in the game. All but 3 players scored a goal during the game showing the potency of the Falcons attack. The game was a great opportunity for the team to practice penalty corner variations at the middle section of the season. The Falcons have a bye next week followed by what is expected to be a close game against Corio.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons V Geelong 1-4. With a few regular players out, some of the Division 2 players stepped up to assist the Division 1 players. It was a hard match with Geelong playing a very strong and fast game and Newtown found it hard to keep up. With Penny as our fill in goalie, she had to work hard and did a great job keeping Geelong shots out of the goals. Good game by all.  Elese scored our only goal.

 Division 2 Women

Newtown Gold vs Geelong 2-1  A hard fought 2-1 victory for Newtown Gold this week. One goal each at half time (Newtown’s courtesy of a great post-goal from Kate) and an improved work-rate in the second half created lots of great opportunities and an impressive game-winning goal from Bron.  Terrific defence, particularly from Remi who had a stand out game, and from Bron who made it tough for Geelong to get the ball into their attacking zone.  As always, Dom, Tess and Kate provided great run up forward.  Another great team game.  Special thanks to Claire for filling in as goalie and congratulations to Meredith for playing her 100th game with Newtown.

Newtown Maroon vs Golden Plains 2-3. A great cracking game which seesawed all night. Maroon had many chances at goal and were unlucky of a few occasions.

Newtown Maroon vs Geelong 2-1. Backing up Monday night proved hard for the girls after Sunday’s game. Despite this the team rallied and saw Hayley score a great goal before half time. After half time Geelong scored and then Katey came back with a resounding hit to the back of the nets. A huge thanks to Phoebe for filling in on the forward line.

Newtown White – bye

Division 2 Men

Newtown Maroon vs Geelong 5-7. Sundays game was great fun. With two new members to Maroon boosting our squad we came out against a very tough Geelong side and scored quickly. Terry had a great game in centre. We were 5 all with 10 minutes to play but 2 late goals sealed our fate to finish the game 7 – 5 Geelong win.

Newtown White vs Torquay 2 2-1. Newtown White had a hard fought win against Torquay 2 at Geelong Grammar on Sunday.  A newly formed team, Torquay 2 came to the competition in round 4 of the season with a strong core of experience and some talented players.  According to the fixture they had only been beaten once the week before by Saints.  At the first whistle we had to endure 10 minutes of intensive attacking hockey by Torquay before wrestling back the initiative to even things up.  Luckily for Newtown many of Torquay’s shots failed to find the back of the net in the first half.  However, at half time both teams had scored once and in the second half Newtown started to figure out how to go around the Torquay defenders (mostly) to score once more.  Everyone in defence worked hard to close the Torquay attack down.  Despite being closely marked in the centre both Rodan and Tom played particularly well for us.
