Great fun for big and little kids!

We have races for everyone, and hockey games to play, with ‘Beat the Keeper’ always a popular one. Adults and children alike can try their hand at some games of skill. Get ready for this hockey season, and purchase your uniform or junior equipment pack.

2017 will again see an intense but friendly rivalry to see who will take home the KLR Cup this year – the Young Guns or the Legends? The 2016 match was a fantastic display of skill which kept the spectators thoroughly entertained.

Relax and Enjoy!

The adults can sit back and enjoy the musical entertainment, provided by Rod Whelan and Paul Lishman, members of the well known Geelong band, ‘Tobias’. Or sample the food and a glass or two of some great refreshments. Check out the stalls and displays. We have some classic cars for your enjoyment, or wander around and have a look at the hand made cards, hand painted art, handcrafts and other displays.

There will be plenty of food to keep us fuelled up, with the BBQ always hot and the cake stall a great place to check out for that after lunch treat.

National Hockey Week

National Hockey Week

The first ever National Hockey Week, from Saturday May 28 to Sunday June 5, is about celebrating the achievements of our members and of the Australian men’s and women’s hockey teams – the Kookaburras and the Hockeyroos.

With the 2016 Summer Olympics coming up in August, we will all be glued to the television to watch and marvel at the skills of the Aussie players, and cheer them on to a medal.

National Hockey Week is also a great chance for us to share hockey with the Geelong community – and show why it’s such good fun!

The Kookaburras are currently ranked the #1 men’s team in the world, and the Hockeyroos are not far behind at #3 in the women’s teams rankings. Jamie Dwyer, named International Player of the Year on 5 occasions, has indicated the Rio Olympics will be his last tournament for Australia, but even at the age of 36, he still has silky skills and is a danger to the opposition in any game.

Hockey is:

  • Having fun
  • Open to everyone
  • Co-operating with your team mates
  • Knowing the skills
  • Exciting and energetic
  • Young and old players

Why Play Hockey?

Playing a team sport such as hockey provides lots of benefits:

  • Fun
  • Friendship and camaraderie
  • Keeping active and fit
  • Leadership, co-operation and teamwork skills
  • Respect for other participants and varying levels of ability
  • Development of skills and self-esteem
  • A chance to play for Victoria or even Australia

Who Can Play Hockey?

Anyone from the age of 3 to 70+ can play hockey. Newtown City Hockey Club welcomes anyone who would like to have a go at hockey, regardless of previous experience or skill level.

When Can I Play Hockey?

The winter season (April to September) is the main season but hockey is also played during the summer (October to February) in modified formats. Players can join a team which plays in a regular competition, or can join a social game where teams and attendance are flexible.

Future Kookaburra or Hockeyroo?

We would love to discover a future Kookaburra or Hockeyroo in our community during National Hockey Week. It might even be your son or daughter, so bring them along to our free Hook In 2 Hockey program on May 31. Check the program details here.

National Hockey Week

Future Kookaburras or Hockeyroos?

Hockey really is a sport for the whole family, and the Newtown City Hockey Club loves to see our families all playing together.

So if you are an adult who used to play hockey at school, and wouldn’t mind having a game again, or even if you have never played before – we would love to have you join us for our Saturday Social game at 1.00 pm each Saturday. We can loan you a stick and you don’t need a uniform – and it’s half-field so you don’t need to be superfit.

Newtown Hockey Club Day

May 30 was the day to celebrate the Newtown Hockey Club, and a good chance to support our fellow club members, with all our matches on the one day. The day began early with the U13 teams on the pitch, and the BBQ fired up. Thanks to all those who helped during the day, especially to Andrea and Dianne who were on duty until late in the day.

Thanks to the bakers in the Club (Marion, Ros, Tracey, Karen and Kylie) – the general opinion was that the cupcakes were absolutely delicious! The hoodies were popular – maybe because of the cold blustery day.

The U8 and U11 players were able to join in the fun once their games at Lloyd Reserve had finished, and enjoyed running on with the U17 team at the start of their match.

The D1 Women Newtown Strikers match was cancelled so this gave us an opportunity to play a fun match between Newtown Strikers and the D2 Women Newtown Spirit ‘and the rest’ – a cast of thousands, with our junior members joining the Spirit team and showing off some great skills.

Newtown Hockey Club Day

Celebrate the Maroon and White!

Come and join the fun on May 30, and celebrate the fantastic club we are all part of.

The sausages will be sizzling on the BBQ at Stead Park, and there will be some special treats and give aways too.  If you need new socks or uniform, bring your money and you can buy what you need.  Or pick up a Newtown coffee mug and a hoodie for those cold days on the sideline.

IMGP3588

Pick up your SportsPass card too. All players who have registered with Hockey Victoria will receive a SportsPass Card as part of their registration entitlement. Once you have activated your card, you will be able to receive great deals and discount offers from over 140 brands. And every time you use your card, you are helping to raise funds for the Newtown Hockey Club.  Check out how this works on our Fundraising page.

With 11 matches featuring Newtown Hockey Club teams on the agenda, there will be plenty of cheering to do.

While our U8 and U11 players will play their matches as usual at Lloyd Reserve on May 30, we haven’t forgotten them.  Our U8 and U11 players are asked to join us at Stead Park after their games finish, to run out with the senior teams at the start of their games.

The first matches start at 9.15 with both the U13 Newtown Spirit and Newtown Strikers team on the pitches. The U13 Newtown Spirit team, with 6 players in this team who are still Under 11, has had some great results so far, and will be showing off both their skills and their fantastic work ethic.

The U13 Newtown Strikers team are currently sitting in top of the ladder position, and will be playing against second placed team, Torquay Tornadoes, so we can expect a great contest.

At 10.15, we see the U15 teams take the field, with Newtown Spirit facing up to Golden Plains, and Newtown Strikers against Torquay. Despite a somewhat unsettled start to the season, both U15 teams have performed very well. Newtown Spirit are clear leaders on the ladder and 2nd placed Newtown Strikers will have a great battle against 4th placed Torquay.

The Under 17 Newtown Strikers team is up next at 11.15. Their opponent, Saints, will be looking to improve on their previous result against Newtown, who are comfortably settled in 1st place on the ladder.

At 12.30, the Division 1 Women get under way, and Newtown Strikers will be looking to repeat their previous win against the 2014 Runners Up, Bellarine. The Newtown Falcons team follows on at 2.00 pm with a tough match against Geelong, who are dominating the D1 competition this year.

At 2.00 pm on Pitch 2, the D2 Women Newtown Rebels takes on Saints. With a very close game between these 2 teams at the last encounter, and with some great form in recent matches, Newtown Rebels will take the field with plenty of optimism.  Newtown Spirit women have a bye this week but their players will be there to cheer their fellow players on.

With an uplifting win last week to their credit, the D2 Men Newtown Spirit will take on Corio at 3.30 pm, with even more determination and effort.

To round off a day of great hockey, stay around for the two games at 5.00 pm. The D2 Men Newtown Strikers are up against Geelong White. Having just had their first loss for this season, the Strikers team will be keen to bounce back and show that they can maintain top spot on the ladder.

The D1 Men’s match will be an exciting contest between the 2014 Grand Final participants – Newtown Falcons and Torquay, so it should be a very exciting match, and an excellent opportunity to see some fast hockey with silky skills and teamwork.

With the 2015 season nearly halfway through, these matches could well be a taste of what the finals will be like.  Come along and be part of the action and the excitement of Newtown Hockey.
