2017 Hockey Season – June 3 & 4

2017 Hockey Season – June 3 & 4

The 2017 hockey season is proving to be another great one for the Newtown Hockey Club. Membership numbers are increasing, and we regularly welcome new players to the Club, with 60 new players joining or rejoining the Club for this winter hockey season. Enthusiasm among junior teams is at a high level, and fantastic attendances at training are showing results on the field.

Thanks to all involved for your efforts – players, coaches, team managers, umpires, committee members, parents and supporters. Well done, and keep it up.

Kookas

The Kookas games are an ideal opportunity to promote the sport of hockey, and prove that hockey is a family game that you can play at any age. The main aim of the Kookas games is to provide an opportunity for junior players to participate in a less structured game. The games also provide an alternative for those who have other commitments at the weekend. However, as the format is flexible and rules can be adjusted to suit the participants, we regularly have adults joining in to boost the numbers. So this week’s game again included players aged from 6 to 60+.

The younger players are not daunted by the presence on the field of bigger opponents, and our youngest player Lenny, again showed his enthusiasm, getting to the ball quickly and making some great passes. Braydn is showing great attention to the play, and with a cool head, is proving a very effective defender. Great ball control skills and running to space by Charlie and Ebony, with Tom and Emily always ready to support their team mates each week. Game strategies and passing skills are developing well, leading to an enjoyable game with lots of friendly rivalry.

Under 6 Joeys – the “Monster Forest” test.

Our Joeys players are learning some great skills, and showing plenty of enthusiasm for the concept of maintaining possession of the ball, and not letting the opposition get it. These dribbling skills are backed up by passing skills and learning to run to a new space, when playing ‘keepings off’.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Raiders

Spirit players put in arguably their best performance of the hockey season when they met Raiders in Under 8 competition at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday. Spirit clicked as a team, with both sides showing developing skills during the fast and friendly showdown between the Newtown stablemates. Avah, Summah and Drew formed a strong line of defence at half back and were instrumental in driving the ball forward into attack right from the starting whistle. And attack Spirit did – time and time again.

Centre forward Michael was on fire. He showcased his impressive range of skills to the spectators on the sidelines, keeping his stick down on the ground as he moved forward relentlessly and went back for second and third efforts with enthusiasm.

With Pollyanna and Juliette roaming dangerously out wide on the wings, the team worked well together. Drew, who fired off some lovely passes, and Michael combined beautifully in a couple of quick breaks while Avah was a pivotal part of Spirit’s attack as usual. Braydn was a valuable contributor at full back, on one occasion cleanly stopping a strong opposition shot on goal and clearing the ball out wide to the left. It was also encouraging to hear calling on the field.

At half time Coach Kellie told Spirit players they were doing a beautiful job. She set them the tasks of marking the Raiders players a little more and looking to see where Spirit team mates were on the field before attempting to pass. She also said three Spirit players had to touch the ball before any shot was made on goal, then sent the team out for the second half with positions largely unchanged.

While Spirit enjoyed a lot of attack after half time, Raiders displayed strong defence, making the match a great one to watch. Pollyanna, Michael and Avah joined forces on several occasions. In a stand-out passage of play Drew delivered a cracking free hit to Juliette who ran into a space to receive the ball before pushing it onwards towards the goals. Summah also added handy pressure up forward in front of goals.

After the final whistle Coach Kellie told her young team the second half had contained “some really fabulous play” characterised by strategic passes, good running and strong marking. Michael received the Subway Best Team Player award after giving 100 per cent the entire game and showing great skills. Well done Michael.

Newtown Raiders vs Newtown Spirit

The best game of the hockey season so far for Newtown Raiders, with players having taken on board the message of ‘concentrate on the play at all times’. The first half saw some great concentration on the ball and on the play, with Raiders doing some great marking of the Spirit players. With all players keeping their sticks on the ground, there were some good forward moves, with Chloe, Lily and Jesse gaining possession and taking the ball into attack. Great defence by Charlotte stopped a number of Spirit attacks, and her quick free passes using both sides of the field allowed Oscar and Isabelle to find space and initiate forward moves. Great running and perseverance by Oscar saw some excellent passages of play for Raiders.

Subway Player of the Day award went to Oscar.

Newtown Rebels vs Torquay

Rebels had a fantastic match this week against Torquay and showed great improvement from the early hockey season games. In the first half there was an early attack from Torquay, however Rebels then gained confidence with Sophie B, Sophie E and Genevieve moving forward. It was a fast-paced game and Rebels showed great tenacity, passing well and keeping Torquay under constant pressure.

At half-time Coach Penny stressed the importance of Rebels keeping their sticks down and chasing the ball. Torquay again started strongly in the second half  but Paddy and Aiden worked well together in defence. Audrey, Neve and Annabelle all added to the Rebel’s attack. All in all, Rebels showed a much-improved performance this week with everyone getting stuck in!

Paddy was awarded Subway Player of the Week for his great work in goal and when defending.

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia Kookaburras

Another excellent game from Strikers, with all players showing great teamwork and great effort.

Under 10 South

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains 0-0

What a fantastic effort from everyone and a very different score to last time we met Golden Plains. Anna made some some great saves in goals, sending the ball wide and out of danger. Amelia and Thamindu backed up Anna in the back line and kept the pressure on, didn’t give up and successfully defended all short corners. Eliza never gave up and put pressure on Golden Plains throughout the entire game. Elliott, Isla, Eliza May and Ruby worked well together switching from defensive to offensive play and calling to each other.

Charlie continued to work on his stick skills and following on with the ball. Alex again managed to push the ball between the opposition’s feet. Isabel found herself under pressure during the game and stepped up to the challenge. Amber and Emma rotated roles during the game and focused on their ball control with keeping their sticks on the ground.

We still need to ensure we pass wide especially in front of goals and being in front of an opponent during any penalty shots. Best Team Player Awards went to Eliza and Isla.

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay Tornadoes 0-0

What a great game….Coach Kellie’s comment at half time was “What a killer first half”. We had excellent clearance of the ball with 2nd and 3rd efforts at the ball. Sticks were down low, small taps were effective at stopping Torquay’s momentum. Kellie wanted the team to work on getting ahead of the ball to give us a run on an open goal, marking a player at all times, and moving down the right side of the field as this plays to the opposition’s weaker side. A scoreless first half with great defence by Spirit as there was a lot of play down the opposition’s goal end.

The second half saw us open up the field, with a lot more play spread across the field. We were trusting ourselves and our team mates better which meant we were able to carry the ball further down the field. Excellent plays were seen. Tackling was great, low passes, great skills, enthusiasm, good positioning and we continued to work the opposition hard. It was a great game to watch from the sidelines with lots of praise after the game to the players from the parents and spectators. Scores 0:0.

Awards were very difficult for Kellie to give out (she wanted to cut them in 1/6 so that everyone could get one). Best team player went to Surry. Subway Players of the Day went to Nate and Charlotte.

Newtown Rebels vs Newtown Spirit 0-2

The derby between Newtown Rebels and Newtown Spirit saw Spirit walk away as winners.  It was an important game as the winner would move one game ahead on the ladder.  The score of 2-0 does not show how closely the game was played.  For Rebels, Teijai was excellent in goals.  Sam and Basyl were outstanding, moving the ball quickly and keeping Spirit on their toes.  Spirit’s defence stood up to numerous attacks from Rebels.  Spirit’s goalie was perhaps the difference between the two teams, booting the goal to safety on several occasions.  At the end of the day, the highlight of the game was sportsmanship shown by both teams, who were equally as quick to put out a hand to the opposition.  Well done to both teams!!!

U12 Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Rebels

Newtown Strikers vs Bellarine Thunder 0-3

This week’s match against Bellarine Thunder proved to be a learning experience for Newtown Strikers. Our first half was disappointing, conceding 3 goals to the opposition. Our team seemed to lose their way a bit and forget skills learned in training. They made a few poor decisions with their passing and didn’t communicate enough. To their credit though the team rallied together in the second half and improved their game play to keep Bellarine goaless.

Chloe played her best game of the hockey season so far, holding her position and getting involved in a lot of the play. She also narrowly missed scoring a goal and assisted in another near miss by Alice. Cameron and Gil also put in good performances with some great passing shots and tackling the opposition to win the ball.  So, although it wasn’t our best game played this hockey season, there were moments of good play and teamwork in the second half. One important thing our team learned this week is to never underestimate the opposition.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 3-1

It was a nice sunny Sunday morning for Newtown Spirit’s Round 6 clash against Newtown Strikers. With Grace and Claudia away, we only had 1 sub for the game, but our regular goalie Max was back. The teams were evenly matched and early attacks through the middle from Nick and Harry were not able to penetrate Strikers’ defence. The Strikers speed into attack was dangerous but the defenders held strong. Jamie showed his versatility with some good clearances of the ball in defence.

Mid-way through the first half we were able to get a score on the board with a great tomahawk from Will. This fired Strikers up and they immediately levelled scores 1-all a minute later. Riley and Harley did some great defending to lock the ball in our forward half but we were unable to capitalise again to half time.

The coach at half-time said he was really pleased to see some lovely passing on left and right sides of the pitch, and he asked for better coverage of the mid-field due to Strikers fast breaks. He wanted the wings to stay wide in order to spread the Strikers defenders out in the circle, and where our attacks couldn’t get through due to congestion, to throw the ball backwards.

In the second half, Spirit went 2-1 up with a nice goal from Harry. Strikers responded by drawing 2 short corners, but Spirit defended well and prevented a score. Jamie added another goal to give Spirit a 3-1 lead. Coach Carl was really pleased with the team’s efforts in what was a good, close contest. Areas to concentrate on in the next game are for the team to spread out into space, and to look up more to see who is free.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 1-3

A great match, won by Newtown Spirit, but very close up until the last 15 minutes. Oscar scored an amazing goal, and Angus put in some great defensive play.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia 1-2

Round 6 was the second clash between Newtown and Kardinia for this hockey season, with the teams having previously met in Round 1 with a victory to Newtown.  Kardinia were still without a goal keeper, however there were a few new faces on their team. Newtown had one of the U14 goal keepers Max available for the game, so it was going to be interesting to see how the game panned out with the playing list changes.

Kardinia surprised Newtown early with their speed up the field and were on the scoreboard in quick time. They dominated possession in the first half and Newtown were deprived of any real opportunities on goal.

Newtown lifted the tempo in the second half resulting in a more even split of possession and territory. Both teams had shots on goal and short corners early in the half, but the scoreboard wasn’t bothered until the curtains opened on the Harry and Miles show. A brilliant ball was delivered to Harry just over half way and he weaved his magic around a couple of Kardinia players twice his size, before delivering the ball to Miles for an encore display of ducking and weaving, and finally a goal. Despite the theatrics on field and hysteria amongst the Newtown supporters, Kardinia scored a second goal not long after from scrappy play in front of the Newtown goal and the game ended with a 2:1 victory to Kardinia.

Great effort by all and looking forward to more excitement in future games. Thanks to Max and Ollie for joining our ranks on the day, we appreciate your support.

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains 4-1

We had the luxury of having a player on the bench this week thanks to Tom C filling in.  We started the game a little sluggishly and a couple of the Golden Plains forwards were playing very high which created a few vulnerable moments early in the game.  However Ollie, Rachael and Byron kept their forwards accountable and limited their scoring, often having to tag two of their forwards each.

We settled down after 10 minutes and once we started using our wings in Tom M and Sam, the game started to open up and we were able to start bringing the ball forward; eventually earning the first goal of the match.  Tom M and Declan worked well together communicating well and switching positions regularly down the right side of the field to confuse the opposition.  This worked well for both of them and at the end of the game they had both scored a goal each.

Strikers continue to work very well as a team.  We worked hard off the ball and were always looking out for each other.  All players continue with the second and third efforts (some times fourth) even when things have not gone to plan.  Byron and Angus both demonstrated excellent examples of putting continued pressure on the opposition when the chips were down.  Great work once again Strikers.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Saints Black 5-2

Falcons began slowly, and at times were a little slow to react to the strong opposition provided by Saints. Some tussles in the play saw some of our players disadvantaged. However Falcons showed a great work ethic, and without saying a word, stood up, shook themselves off and started to work on free hits, calling and general skills. This proved the key to turning the match around, and at half time, the score was 1-1.

A change of positions was needed, and the team came out with renewed vigor and effort. There was some great switching, and fantastic one touch hockey led to a goal, and the score was 2-1. Saints came back to equalise at 2-2.  But Falcons went up a gear, with plenty of calling from our defence to our forwards, resulting in another goal to Falcons – 3-2. A couple of short corners followed, and one led to another goal 4-2. The last goal was scored from a quick break and the final score was 5-2.

Goals to Darren 2, Sean 1, Gus 1, Hamish 1. Thanks to Darren, Carl and Alex for filling in.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay Tornadoes 1-2

Another week, another frustratingly close loss for the Strikers.  This week though, the overall endeavour of the team as a whole was more consistent and although the end result was a loss, we had more possession and scoring opportunities than the opposition.

These are all positive points, the tough part now is working out how to capitalise on our opportunities so that we can get back to winning these close games. Big thanks to Daniel and Richard who stepped in to fill our vacancies this week. Hopefully a few of our ongoing injuries will have time to heal over the Queens birthday weekend and we can come back fresh and ready to play.

Newtown Spirit vs Saints Red 2-0

Coach Fitzy was back in town to take on the task of coaching Spirit against undefeated Saints. Thanks to Gordo for coaching the team the week before to a well earned draw in a bruising encounter. Young gun Callum is nursing an injured knee. All the best Cal for a speedy recovery.

Birse father and son combo Don and Brodie were solid in defence keeping out some promising Saints forward moves. Fantastic field goals by elder statesmen Gwyn and Ian were well deserved after team link ups in mid field. Half backs Adam, Beau and Alex provided drive to forwards Woodsy, Tim, Gordo and Luke.

Both teams were missing regular players. This win keeps Spirit well and truly in the hunt for a finals berth, but this won’t just happen without continued improvement. Passing stick to stick and leading to space are areas to keep working on.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 3-2

A very happy day for Newtown Spirit, earning our first win for this hockey season. We should probably mention that Torquay were short of players, but Spirit players took advantage of this to create some great passages of play. Perseverance and repeated defence efforts to meet the ball early saw Rachel, Wendy, Andie and Beth block many of Torquay’s forward moves. Great pressure on the ball carrier by Kellie and Peta and thoughtful passing to players in space produced some great switching.

Great running to gain possession by Georgie, Jacquie and Lauren and  once in possession, determination to hold the ball and move quickly to attack put pressure on the Torquay defence, forcing them to make a number of saves. Katie and Kirsty kept the pressure on too, always looking for team mates to pass to. Great marking by Newtown Spirit, and with less opposition to cover, occasionally too many players moved to get the ball. Goals scored by Peta (2) and Kellie.

Great work team. Thanks to Rachel, Georgie and Jacquie for filling in.

2017 Hockey Season – May 27 & 28

About 1/3 of the way through the hockey season, and this week was a good illustration of the changeable weather conditions – warm and sunny on Saturday, rain and hail on Sunday. Congratulations to all players on their efforts whatever the weather.

Joeys

As the hockey season progresses, our young hockey stars are gaining confidence and improving skills each week. Jasmine and Amelia showed us some great dribbling skills. Good understanding of passing the ball and running to a new space by Alexander and Harrison was a feature of the game of keepings off, with Zeph making good position too.

Kookas

An excellent game this week, resulted in a 2-2 draw between Team Orange and Team Red. Lenny joined us for his first game of hockey, and showed great skills and focus on the ball. Braydn was again making good position and passing well to team mates. Ebony, Olivia and Tom worked hard, with Ebony making great runs to meet the ball in space, and push forward into attack. Baxter showed great tackling skills and gained control for his team, passing to the advantage of his team mates on many occasions.

Newtown Raiders vs College Green

Well done to everybody on another great game. We are nearly half way through the hockey season and every week it is great see the team improve all the time. Isabelle did a fabulous job as our centre and was well supported by Lily and Hannah on the wings. Oscar and Jesse did a great job in defence, stopping several attempts at goal. Both Hannah and Chloe demonstrated great dribbling and passing skills down the line, demonstrating what they had learnt during practice that morning.

Well Done to Chloe for being awarded Subway Player of the Match, with some great focus and keeping her stick on the ground to gain possession.

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia Kangaroos

Strikers took on a strong Kardinia team this week. Strikers were caught napping in the first part of the game with Kardinia scoring some early goals. Once Newtown started to play the game of passing into space and out wide, the goals began coming. Will was very strong in attack scoring a couple of times in the first half.

The second half saw most of the game played in Newtown’s forward line with Matilda dribbling hard in attack and excellent passing in from the centres. There was a brilliant piece of play with Will passing to Matilda in space, who dribbled down the wing then passed in to Isabella who scored a great goal. Awesome display of passing out to players on the wing.  Well done Team. This week Sam received the Subway Encouragement Award for his solid performance in the centre.

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay

Spirit overcame a defensive first half to shine in the second in a friendly battle against Torquay at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday. Braydn, playing arguably his best game of the season so far, tackled consistently and marked the opposition with persistence. He managed to stop Torquay play on several occasions, then fed the ball to his waiting teammates. Baxter and Avah were a wall of defence while Pollyanna directed some lovely free hits out wide and Summah was poised for action at wing. Michael did a great job time and again across the half-back line.

At half time Coach Kellie praised the team for their defensive work but urged them to spread out more. She set a distance of  “five big steps” between teammates when setting up for Spirit free hits. And she urged the youngsters to get into position swiftly. In the second half, after a position reshuffle, Spirit players threw themselves into attack, shooting several goals. Centre forward Avah and left wing Michael proved dangerous up forward while Baxter instigated several great passages of play from left half, always lifting his head and looking to select the best passing option whenever he got the ball.

Torquay showed some strong defence and managed to repel several Spirit forays towards goals. Both teams put on a great display for the spectators cheering on the sidelines.
Coach Kellie congratulated her team for a fantastic second half, where players got into position quickly, called and worked hard to win the ball. Braydn won the Subway Best Team Player Award after, in the coach’s words, “playing a blinder”. Well done Braydn.

Newtown Rebels vs Kardinia Kookaburras

Rebels had another tough match this week against the Kardinia Kookaburras, however their skills and confidence are improving with each game played. In the first half there was an early attack from the Kookaburras, however Audrey defended well and Sophie performed strongly in goal. Rebels then gained some confidence with improved passing and started to move forward. Aiden and Genevieve showed great tenacity, tackling well and never giving up when trying to get the ball. At half-time the coach stressed the importance of Rebels marking players from the opposition but then moving quickly to take a free hit and find space. In the second half Kookaburras kept up the pressure with a relentless attack. Paddy, along with Aiden in goal, defended well, while Neve and Annabelle made excellent passes when taking free hits. Overall, Rebels enjoyed a great match and most importantly kept smiling!

Sophie was awarded Subway Player of the Week for her great listening to the coach and her fantastic work in goal and defence.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 0-0

Spirit began the game with the coach’s reminder in mind – “trust your team mates”. This saw a fantastic first half, with everyone’s efforts “off the charts”. There was some great tackling with the stick on the ground, and perseverance winning the free hit for Spirit. There was some solid defence by Meyah and Max who was everywhere, pushing the ball out to the wings very well. Ruben at half back cut off many Strikers attacks and returned the ball to attack for Spirit, always looking for team mates to pass to. Strategies for the second half included spreading out away from team mates and passing the ball around the oppostion, rather than into the crowd. Coach Kellie encouraged players to call to team mates when going for the ball “I’ve got it!”, allowing team mates to get into position ready for a pass.

The second half was highlighted by fantastic tackling from everyone, and it was great to see Leo pushing forward with the ball and winning the free. Keeping the stick down and avoiding ‘hacking’ at the ball saw Spirit gain possession on numerous occasions and with control, were able to create many forward moves. There was some excellent “manning up” as Ryley pointed out. A tendency to pass the ball into the middle limited further attacks, so taking the time to look up and hit wide is an aim for next week.

This was a great game to watch, everyone was engaged in the game and had fun – (all kids agreed they had fun!!).  Thank you to Surry for volunteering to play for the opposition. Result: 0-0 No goals were scored, but it was a fantastic game to watch as agreed by all parents!

Subway Award: Ruben – consistent effort throughout the entire game, always looking for his team players to hit out to. Best team player: Lucy – for her awesomeness as a goalie, with fantastic kicking to stop the goals at critical moments.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 0-0

Firstly a big thank you to Surry for playing for Strikers. What a fantastic game from everyone this week. We put into practice what we have been focusing on for the last few training sessions. Passing to the side and not giving up. We still need to remember to take 5 steps back when the opponent has a penalty and not leave a player open.

Thamindu, Alex and Amelia successfully defended the goals all game. Eliza never gave up throughout the game and covered so much territory. Brandon worked the wing and pushed the ball beautifully along the side line. Alex even had a fancy pass between a players feet and came so close to scoring. Eliza-May, Ruby and Amber worked together on the front line to keep the ball moving and Isla is really developing a roving role throughout the mid field.

Thank to Jai who is currently injured but still attended the game and encouraged the team. Subway and Best Team Player Awards for the day went to Eliza May and Alex.

Newtown Strikers vs Bellarine Lightning 1-0

What an awesome game we witnessed on Saturday watching Newtown Strikers play the undefeated Bellarine Lightning team. It was an entertaining, fast paced, energetic game from the start to the finish. It was so pleasing to see how much the team has improved and gelled together since round 1. It’s obvious that the hard work they are putting in at training is paying off.  Strikers were constantly on the attack throughout the match putting much pressure on the opposition. There were no goals scored in the first half and only one scored in the second half which was all that was needed for the Strikers to win the match.

Tom was again unbeatable in defence giving great support to Jamie. He was also strongly supported by Cameron, Alice and Ruby who were relentless in their tackling and winning the ball. Archie and Adam were kept very busy in their centre roles both putting in a fantastic effort with their stick skills. Thomas, Kenna and Chloe on the wing were always in the right positions when needed and Chloe had a great shot at goal which only narrowly missed. Gil was very strong at left inner and Jack was showing some talent with his reverse stick work and dribbling. He also scored the match winning goal.

The parents watching, the coaches and myself were so proud of the whole team and the way they all played which made it difficult to choose our best on fields, but for the second week in a row, Tom was the unanimous choice with Jack and Alice also named. Keep up the great work Strikers!

Newtown Rebels vs Geelong College 3-0

Rebels continued to show improvement this week putting on a strong display against Geelong College winning 3-0.  Brandon was outstanding completing a hat-trick of goals.  Over the past few weeks Rebels have been working on switches out of defence and through the midfield, as well as passing the ball backwards to team mates in better positions.  Right from the start you could see improvement in this part of their game.  Sam, Basyl and Luca showed great understanding of each other, producing several switches out of defence which kept Geelong College on their toes.  Lachlan provided excellent support to the defence, receiving some red hot passes which he trapped and moved quickly down field to his teammates.  Isobel and Mai were as tenacious  in offence and the midfield, and weren’t scared to pass the ball backwards to create opportunity.  Adele produced some excellent passes to Kiah and Teijai who were hardworking as always.  Imogen was dangerous around goals, getting herself in the right position time and again but just couldn’t finish off all of her good work.  Well done to Pat for going goalie this week!!!

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 2-0

Another clear day greated the team on Sunday but it certainly was cold. The team welcomed Daniel back and Eliza V helped us out once again. Spirit started off with great gusto and put an enormous amount of pressure on Torquay right from the start of the game. Some very near misses from Maggie had the supporters on their knees with excitement. Torquay had fantastic defence and their goalie did very well indeed. As the first half rounded out Edie in goals was put under a little bit of pressure by Torquay and deflected a certain goal. What a great way to celebrate her 25th game for the club!

The second half saw Spirit a little lack lustre with Torquay applying the pressure from the start. It was a little nervous but then Spirit lifted and had many many shots on goal and short corners. India had 2 close misses and Maggie was also in the best position but was denied. The two Spirit goals came from Angus following some fantastic team play to get the ball up forward. The entire team were a part of the goals and should be very proud of their efforts. Archer seemed to be everywhere and made an impression every time he touched the ball. Matilda was quick to the ball, Oli and Mitch read the play beautifully down the back, Harry brought the ball forward early well, Daniel was making an impression in the middle, Lachie was of great support to Archer and Harry and also read the play brilliantly while Eliza played with grunt and determination.  Well done everyone. Peter was very impressed with you all.

 Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 4-1

Newtown Spirit faced second on the ladder Torquay on Saturday for their Round 5 clash. With our regular goalkeeper Max away, the coach opted for a kicking full back, and Sam took on the role in the first half. Torquay also used a kicking full back for the first half. Torquay immediately had our defenders under pressure and had 2 short corners early, but our defenders, in particular Amelia in her first game back from injury, did well to hold them off. Newtown then took the ball forward, and Harry was able to slot a nice goal through. With a short corner soon after, Newtown went up 2-nil after a hit from Jamie. Grace was positioned nicely up forward to receive some fast breaks and Charley as always gave us plenty of run from defence into attack.

At half-time, the coach again called for the ball to be kept out wide, and wanted more 1-touch passes as the team was holding on to the ball a little too long. Also, when running forward with the ball, our lead players were asked to hold up the ball a little to allow other players to join them up forward and assist. In the second half, Torquay used a dedicated goalkeeper but Will got the ball past to take the score to 3-nil. Torquay quickly gathered their composure and broke through our defence to bring the score to 3-1. Newtown continued their attacking pressure and through Jamie we were able to go 4-1 up. There was great defensive pressure from Bailey, Harley, Nick and Riley all match, and Claudia provided great running up the wing into the circle.

Torquay kept fighting and were unlucky not to get a goal after two lovely crosses across goal and one disallowed goal that was hit outside the circle. Newtown also had some further chances with Harry and Grace working together well on a number of occasions and Charley, Will, Ella and Jamie all having attempts defended by Torquay. Coach Carl praised the team for their good passing and for holding their positions well.

 Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia 4-2

We fronted up with only 9 players for the start of the game against a fairly strong Kardinia team who also had a bench. Within the first minute Kardinia scored a goal and all of the Newtown fans thought that it could get ugly quickly. However our defensive players kept their chins up and responded well, locking down the backline after that first goal and depriving Kardinia of any easy attacking play for the rest of the game. Angus and Byron did a fantastic job niggling and tackling the Kardinia forwards, some who were twice their size; and anything that got through them was easily shutdown by Corey. Jamie jumped on the field 15 minutes into the game bringing our number of players up to 10 which provided great support and an additional goal sneak that the U17 opposition teams often tend to overlook because of his size, usually to their regret.  The efforts of the improved defensive work soon flowed through to the forwards and Tom soon scored on a fast break.

After that point, we never really looked back and could have easily won by a greater margin.  Our work rate in the mid-field through Jonah, Declan and Rachael was very high often digging deep to chase down a loose ball or to drop back and defend.  Our key advantage over other teams this year has been our team spirit which generates strong will, a high work rate and confidence in each other; this then results in lots of opportunities as they make leads and look for each other.  Great work Strikers and keep it up.

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 1-3

The game started at a frantic pace with two short corners to Newtown and one to Torquay within the first 5 minutes of the game. This set the tone for much of the first half with play from one end to the other – it was tiring to watch!!  Newtown was not marking effectively late in the first half allowing Torquay to finally score.

The start of the second half was scrappy and Torquay were able to go 2 goals up early on. Newtown eventually pierced their defence via a quick counterattack and Miles was able to draw the goal keeper off his line and pull back one goal. Torquay continued to apply pressure and scored a third goal to finish at 3:1.

A hard fought game against strong opposition but no reason we can’t be more competitive with hard work at training ready for our next meeting with Torquay in Round 10.  Thanks to Caleb for keeping goal at short notice.

The game started off at a fast pace with both teams showing great skills. There was plenty of switching play, calling and moving to the ball. The weather at this stage was nice and sunny and it looked like a great day for a hockey match. Falcons kept Torquay out with some great goalkeeping skills by Campbell and some solid defence by Lachie, Sean, Pat, Nick P and Leo. Mighty fine stickwork was a feature of the play for these players. Then the weather changed, the sun disappeared, down came the rain and the hail, and it made playing more difficult at times. However the two teams kept on playing with determination and great effort.

Nic M had to leave the game, but his spot was filled by Tom P, and Oliver ran on and off the bench. Players continued to run hard, just to keep warm. Falcons scored first from a passage of great field play. Great passing, with the ball switched into the dee for Zed to execute a reverse stick shot under the diving goalkeeper, and the score was 1-0. Torquay replied from a short corner, making it 1-1. Late in the game, Torquay scored from a puzzling free hit. Both the Falcons forward and defence lineups did well, with maximum effort. All in all, it was a great game of hockey on a day where the weather made it difficult for both teams to play to potential.

Thanks to Tom P and Oliver for filling in.

Newtown Strikers vs Geelong Jaguars 3-4

If only we could bottle the 15 minutes where we scored 3 goals at the end of the second half, then repeat that three more times. Unfortunately, if it was that easy we’d all be superstars so for now this game will be a reminder to the Strikers that we need to get back to basics, strong passing, trapping, off the ball running, all things that we’ve been taught from the junior level.

The game itself was competitive, but Geelong were the only team to score in the first half and a quarter, at which point the Strikers shifted up a gear putting three quick fire goals in the back of the net. With the scores tied and only seconds left in the game, Geelong managed to get a short corner, the final whistle blew and they scored putting them up by one goal.

This was possibly fitting considering the rest of the game, maybe we were a little complacent after playing the top teams in the division the past few weeks, thinking this game would be easier, it is clear now that there will be no easy games this season and that as a team we have to renew our drive to be a finals contender and look to next week where we’ll be taking on the second on the ladder Torquay .

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Saints Black 0-7

Congratulations to the Falcons players on their courage and determination in the game on Sunday. Despite the bad weather, which included  wind, rain and hail, the team kept fighting against the odds to try very hard to score goals. Unfortunately the opposition were determined to stop us scoring goals. Saints played at a fast pace, switching the play quickly to find players in space, and using accurate passing and deflections to achieve results. Emma P stopped many attacks, playing with great focus and controlled tackles and was well supported by Bec and Kate in midfield. Half time saw the score at 0-4, but this score did not reflect the good play of Falcons in attack, with Shannon and Hailey showing great effort running to receive the ball and confront opponents. Cool, calm and controlled play by Jess set up a number of forward moves for Falcons. Thanks to Sam, Shannon and Claire who changed their plans at short notice to help us play well as a team. Every one listened to Deb’s pre game strategies and implemented them successfully. Enjoy the  bye next week, as we also have the long weekend off. See you all  rested and ready for another game on the 18th June at 12.30

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 0-8

The recruit of the week was Deb, filling in as keeper, and showing some excellent moves.

Division 2 Men

Newtown Spirit vs Bellarine 2-2

Newtown Spirit had a good game across the board this week.  In the end we achieved a 2 all draw against Bellarine although Spirit had many more chances going into the D.  Gwyn, Beau, Adam, Callum and Daniel all played great structured and fast hockey. Gordon did a lot of shouting and is looking forward to Fitzy taking over coaching again next week. Unfortunately one of the older Bellarine players thought it was necessary to injure our young players in order to even up the match.  I hope we do not see any more of this behaviour on the hockey field this season.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Spirit vs Geelong Jaguars 1-2

An excellent game from Spirit with solid defence again by Hill and Wendy, who stuck to her player well and limited Geelong’s ability to capitalise on forward moves. With space available, Hill made some great clearing passes from defence. Some great chasing and passing from the midfield by Beth, Kellie and Andie and the fast pace and accurate passing of Georgie and Jacquie created some lovely attacks. Great running by De and Peta on the forward line to move to the ball. Great switches by Peta got the ball into our attacking zone and there were a number of opportunities before Jacquie put one in the net for Spirit. Geelong continued to press forward with some fast and skilfull players, and managed to outmanoeuvre the defence to score. With 10 players, Spirit still managed to cover opponents well.

2017 Hockey Season – May 20 & 21

Kookas

A win for Team Orange this week with some good early passages of play creating plenty of attack. Charlie, Tom and Ebony worked well together, with some great ball cotnrol skills. Great defence by Red and some good switching of play turned the tables and Red began to trouble the Orange defence. Great running to space by Braydn found him in perfect position in front of the goals on a number of occasions and Emily made some nice interceptions and was always looking for a team mate.

Under 6 Joeys

The ‘Monster Forest’ game is popular with our younger players, and they are developing very good dribbling skills, with excellent scanning and changes of direction. There were some beautiful straight passes this week too, right on target and through the legs of the volunteers. We finished off with a game of ‘keepings off’, and already players are showing a good understanding of finding space on their own in which to receive the ball. Excellent passing by Alexander and Harrison, looking for team mates.

Under 8

Newtown Rebels vs Kardinia Kangaroos

Rebels performed amazingly well, especially being 2 players down against a full Kardinia Kangaroos team. There was an early attack from Kardinia with some rapid attacks in quick succession, however Neve defended well and put pressure on the opposition and denied them some chances. Rebels gained confidence with some strong passes and started to move forward. Aiden showed great tenacity, tackling well and never giving up when trying to get the ball. Sophie, Genevieve, Audrey and Paddy also showed great team work and persistence. Kardinia continued to attack right up until the half-time whistle.

At half-time Colleen stressed the importance of players keeping their sticks down and Rebels started the second half strongly. However Kardinia, with the advantage of two additional players, kept up a strong attack and, despite all the efforts of the Rebels players, created some successful moves toward the goal.

All in all, Rebels displayed excellent team work, always trying to get the ball and move it forward. Each week they are improving and growing in confidence – great effort Rebels! Aiden was awarded Subway Player of the Week for his improved skills and relentless pursuit of the ball.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia Kookaburras

Spirit overcame a sluggish start to fire in the second half in Under-8 action against Kardinia Kookaburras at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday. While there were moments of strong play early in the game, with Michael and Baxter defending strongly and Drew creating a couple of fast breaks, the team seemed a little lost amidst wave after wave of Kookaburra attacks.

Centre half back Juliette worked hard to mark the opposition during the congested game, with play concentrated in the central corridor. Coach Kellie instructed her team to stick to their positions and pass out wide to escape the mass of players roaming the centre strip. She also urged Spirit to get into position straight away after winning a free, swiftly setting up options for the teammate taking the free hit. She set them the challenge of keeping their eyes on the ball at all times.

The coach’s speech worked, the team “woke up” and Spirit players threw themselves into the action with renewed vigour. Avah was on fire, sending a lovely hard push of the ball into the back of the goals to score. And the team lifted even further. Michael, who also goaled, kept solid pressure on the Kookaburras at all times. He also combined with Pollyanna and Baxter in a great sequence of linked play that carried Spirit deep into attack. Drew and Juliette stood strong at full back, while Summah lurked dangerously at left wing.  Braydn, who filled in briefly for the opposition in the first half until more Kookaburras flew in, slotted in at centre forward and was in the thick of the action.

Coach Kellie was delighted with the team’s turnaround after half time. “You paid attention, got into position,” she told Spirit players after the game. “We woke up and it was a fabulous second half.” She also praised players for their second and third efforts.

Avah, who goaled twice, received the Subway Best Team Player Award after a wonderful game, characterised by great skills and her never-give-up approach to hockey. And well done Braydn for volunteering to fill Kookaburra numbers at the start of the game.

Newtown Raiders vs Kardinia

A great game by Raiders with everybody developing some good basic skills and putting the training into practice during the game. Everybody did an excellent job staying in position and really starting to play as a team. Great work by Isabelle in defence, often outnumbered by the Kardinia attack but always ready to block the shot. Great free passes out of defence found Hannah and Charlie in good position and created some nice runs forward into attack.

Well Done to Charlie for being awarded Subway Player of the Match, with excellent ball control skills and some great dodges and perseverance to bypass the opposition.

Newtown Strikers – Bye

Under 10 South

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay Tornadoes 0-3

This week Strikers faced a strong contest against Torquay. The opposition didn’t field a goalie and had eight players on the team which opened up the field for Newtown. The team made great use of the space and held their positions really well, which allowed for some very effective passing from deep in defence towards goals. Early in the first half Charlie in goals organised a strong line of defenders to battle two short corners, and one shot unfortunately went just out of Charlie’s reach to put Torquay on the scoreboard.

There were some great tackles executed throughout the game by Eliza, Eliza-May and Thamindu. Alexandra showed her strength in defence with a sweeping clear out wide to Jai who dribbled the ball the length of the field for a breath-taking shot on goal that Amber almost managed to nudge in for a score with a great position on the post – alas we will have to try that perfect run again next week. Another quick succession of passes from Amelia to Isabel to Isla and to Jai showed some great attacking potential. Finally, Elliot and Amelia took the prize for commitment to the team, both executing very effective diving tackles (although dislocated shoulders are not to be encouraged).

Awards this week went to Isabel (Subway Player of the Week) and Amelia (Best Team Player).

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 1-14

A really tough opposition today, lots more pace and ability to pick up and play the ball. Kellie talked about our loss of structure and an an inability to have a 2nd and 3rd play at the ball. She wanted us to mark our players better in the second half so that it could prevent them from getting the ball, spread out more across the field and call for the ball when out wide. A goal to Meyah saw our spirits lift just before the whistle went.

The second half saw us spread across the field more but we were still hitting it back to where it came from. The final chat from Kellie encouraged our players for next week’s game to spread out wide which will see the opposition follow and then this can allow us to hit across the field not just straight down the centre. She encouraged each player to challenge each other by shouting out to “find your position”, “find your player”, claim the ball “my ball” and letting your team mates know that there is a “tackle coming”. Trust in your team mates was the drive home message. A very tough game against a strong opposition. Better luck next week Spirit. Best Team Player Awards  went to Max and Nate.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Newtown Strikers 6-9

Falcons began the game with 8 players, and were glad to have Tom McD from Strikers join the team. Tom proved valuable, scoring a goal from some good play outside the Dee. When Pat arrived for the game, Falcons had 10 players, and looked a little more settled. There was plenty of passing, calling and switching the play and Falcons looked good. But so did Strikers.

The game was an even contest, wtih Falcons scoring quickly matched by Strikers. The game was a test to see who could score from field play, or from short corners. Half time score was 3-2 to Falcons.

The second half started a little slowly for Falcons but with good buildup of play, changing from one side to the other. It was great to see both goalkeepers in the thick of things, with plenty of saves by both. More goals came from open play, and one for Falcons from a short corner. Score 4-4.

Then with ten minutes to go, the pace picked up and the contest was really on. Scores went 4-5, 5-5, 6-5, 6-6, and then Falcons ran out of breath. Scores 6-7, 6-8, and final score 6-9 giving Strikers a well deserved win.

This was a game with a very high standard of skills. Players of both teams did not give up and tried their best right till the end. This will give the Strikers players confidence to take on the higher placed teams in the competition.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Falcons 9-6

In what can only be described as history repeating itself, in very similar circumstances to a middle round match last year, Strikers were up against an undermanned Falcons team and after a tight tussle came away with the win.

Obviously in such a high scoring game, both teams traded goals but it wasn’t until mid way through the second half that the Strikers’ young offence broke through with some outstanding running plays, resulting in some equally amazing goals (one from Thomas plucking the ball out of the air from a raised deflection to put it in the back of the net) placing the game out of reach of a Falcons comeback.

All of the Strikers and Falcons should be commended on what I can only assume would have been a very entertaining game to watch. With a few players back from injury the Strikers can now focus on maintaining fourth spot on the ladder in what is shaping up to be a very competitive season.

Newtown Spirit vs Saints Red 1-4

Newtown Spirit began the game well, glad to welcome Peta back from holidays, and Julie and Erin filling in from Strikers. Saints put an early goal in the net from a straight short corner shot. But Newtown just got on with the game, and with some great defence from Andie and Peta were able to deflect many attacks and send the ball forward for Newtown. Great running by Deanne and Julie on the left saw Spirit enter the goal circle on a number of occasions for some ‘just missed’ shots at goal. Deanne was on the end of some scrambled play in the circle to even the score, and we were feeling confident.

The second half saw Erin and Emily working hard on the right side, creating space for play to flow along the wing and into the circle. Julie made some great position and great passes to get the ball through the Saints defensive press.  Peta, Andie and Beth continued to confront and steal the ball from the Saints forwards in midfield. Excellent marking by Wendy in the second half irritated the Saints opponents and limited their effectiveness. With only 11 players though, the hard work saw our players tire toward the end and it was in the last quarter of the game where Saints were able to find gaps and score again to seal the win.

2017 Hockey Season – May 13 & 14

Round 4 of the hockey season was another week with some fantastic hockey at all levels of the Club’s teams.

Kookas

There were 3 teams playing this game and while it seemed that Team Mosquitoes would win, both Team Orange and Team Red persevered and showed some excellent switching and accurate passing. Welcome to Tom, who joined his cousin Ebony, and like Ebony, showed great skills for his first game of hockey. Good efforts by Emily to cut off opposition passes with stick on the ground and focus on the ball. Braydn did a great job in both attack and defence, showing his improving skills and game concentration. Charlie worked hard as usual, making good runs and creating space to receive the ball in.

Saturday Social

A great game of Saturday Social hockey this week, with Georgia and Chris joining us for a game. Rachel and Ruby worked well together in a hard to beat mother/ daughter combination. With Sam and Zen on opposite teams, there was a bit at stake in the tackles and the honours were fairly even at the end of the game. Cassie and Charlotte had great communication and some great running to space opened up the play for some nice attacks.

Under 6 Joeys

Great work again by our U6 players, showing some good skills and ball control. Great scanning when dribbling and now moving on to accurate passing.

Newtown Raiders vs Torquay Tornadoes

Well done to everybody on another great game. It was a tough match with 3 of our players unable to make it this week but we still did an awesome job! Thank you to Stella who joined our team, helping us to field a side! Well done to Charlie and Jesse who did a fantastic job in the centre and goal keeping. Oscar did a superb job on the wing – not only trying to bring the play into the forward line but also helping to stop several attempts at goal. He managed to play on after being struck on the hand by another player’s hockey stick!

Lily and Stella did a great job on the wing supporting our Centre and Goalkeeper. Chloe also demonstrated some good ball skills in the backline. It is great to see everybody improve individually each week.

Congratulations to Jesse for being awarded the Subway player of the match! Jesse’s concentration on the ball in the last 15min of the second half made a big difference to the whole game.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia Kangaroos

Spirit had to dig deep defensively during a crowded encounter against the enthusiastic Kardinia Kangaroos in Under 8 action at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday. While a constant huddle of players around the ball made for a messy game, Spirit worked hard to shut down opposition assaults on goals. With Michael and Baxter standing strong in full back, the duo managed to thwart many goal attempts. On one occasion Michael calmly and cleanly stopped a hard hit just in front of the goals, clearing it from the danger zone for his team despite the pressure. Drew, at left half back, was another key defender right from the starting whistle while Avah showed her customary skill in intercepting the ball, looking for teammates and then passing it on. Juliette kept to her position out wide at right wing, giving her teammates a great option to open up the play.

At half time Coach Kellie urged her young charges to bypass the muddle in the middle by passing out wide, rather than restricting themselves to the congested central corridor. She asked Spirit to use their voices, keep their eye on the ball and only use the flat side of the stick. Kardinia Kangaroos sprang into action the minute play resumed, taking the ball swiftly into their attacking zone and that’s where it remained for much of the game.  Summah and Avah, playing as full backs, withstood strong pressure from the Roos and repelled the ball to safety time and again. Summah put in a sterling game, standing strongly in front of the opposition and never backing down. She didn’t waste time when taking free hits either, remembering to send the ball wide where it was picked up by players including Juliette.

Centre half back Pollyanna got amongst the defensive action in the circle and battled hard to clear the ball. There was also a lovely passage of play triggered by Drew, who cleanly directed the ball out left to a running Michael. Michael, with Pollyanna in support, launched himself into attack in one of the few fast breaks by Spirit in the second half while Braydn provided options at centre forward. After the game ended Coach Kellie praised her team for their strong defence and their efforts to direct play out wide. While applauding lovely play by Michael and Avah, she awarded the Subway Best Team Player award to Summah, saying it was the best game she’d ever seen the youngster play. Good work Spirit and well done Summah.

Newtown Strikers vs College White

Strikers this week fielded a full team and as a result gave up a player to support the Newtown Raiders who were a little short, huge thanks Stella. College fronted up with an army of players that resulted in a substantial bench and many player changes for them. The Strikers played a very attacking game this week with most of the game played in Newtown’s centre and forward lines. In the first half the boys (Will and Alex) attacked well with support from Eliza and Isabella in the centre. The backs however saw little of the ball. In the second half Darren alternated the positions which saw the girls have a go at attacking. Matilda and Lucy in forward did well attacking with a few shots on goal, and Matilda scoring after some great passing from the centres. This week Strikers held their positions well, some great dribbling and very strong passing into attack. Alex won the Subway Encouragement award and Assistant Coach Harry Bradbury umpired the whole game single-handedly.  Well Done Team.

Newtown Spirit vs Geelong College 3-0

Half time heard Kellie saying “loving your work” with excellent linking of play. One of the linkages saw a pass from Nate to Meyah to score Spirit’s first goal. There was praise for keeping eyes on the opposition but we had to use our voices better by saying “I’ve got it” and then making sure we had an awareness of where the other players were. Kellie talked about how the opposition had some strong and long pushes and wanted us to work on that in the next half with lowering our stance as we moved into a push. Otherwise she was really happy and was enjoying watching the spirit play.

The second half saw Max make a solo dash from before the half line right into the goal area, avoiding the opposition. It was very fast with great control of the ball and a shot a goal which unfortunately saw the goal post deflect it. There was a big cheer from the crowd. Kellie praised the strong tackling. But there where times when everyone was at the ball……we needed to think about being the player who was not on the ball and being out of the tackle so we could be the one that players could pass to. Subway award went to Seb and Best Team Player award went to Meyah – 2 goals and always in the play!

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 0-16

Well done to Torquay who out played us on the day and took advantage of all opportunities. Amber was set the task of goal keeper and was under pressure right from the start of the game. She saved multiple attacks on goal through out the game. Isabel, Ruby, Jai and Isla made up the front line and made some good passes. Thamindu and Amelia assisted Amber in defensive roles. Alex and Anna rotated from the wings to present options from passing wide and Brandon was the roving player from the game. Elliott and Eliza May covered a great amount of the field throughout the game.

At half time we discussed taking our free shots quickly by looking to the umpire when the whistle is blown to see who the ball has been awarded to. Also make sure to pass ball to the wings and not to the centre. During a free pass make sure to pick an opposing playing and stand in front of them. Thamindu and Amelia both sustained ball injuries in the closing minutes of the game. Amber was awarded Best Team Player for all her work in goals and Thamindu the Subway Award for never giving up and returning to the field after being injured.

Newtown Spirit vs Geelong College 6-1

Spirit had a fantastic game this week with some brilliant play by all the team. This week it felt like the team has clicked and have shaken out the cobwebs from the summer period. It was such a great match to watch. Maggie stepped into goals this week and for the first half I think she was a little cold due to much of the play being in our forward line. From the very beginning it seemed that spirit had their fame face on and were out to score some goals. We even had what seemed to be an extra forward this week as Angus was playing the highest full back position I have ever seen. Peter soon had him back where he belonged! Both our full backs made sure the ball hardly passed by them and very quickly had the ball back up to our forwards through the inners and wings.

Mia managed to find the goal 3 times thanks to some brilliant balls from her team mates. Angus also scored 3 goals with one coming off a brilliant short corner. Angus pushed the ball out to Oliver who then passed it back to Angus who at this stage had stepped right next to the goal post and slotted the ball in behind the goalie. Great team work despite being brothers! Maggie had a bit more work in the second half as I think we were getting a little tired and they managed to score once while maggie and Liam saved a certain couple more.

Well done to all the Spirit players. It was great to have the Whelan’s back who certainly played like they had not had a break!

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 4-3

A close and hard fought match by the Strikers to take the win against Torquay. It was great to see some of the skills being taught at training being utilised throughout the game. Tom was our rock in defence stopping the ball and flat passing out wide to his teammates. Alice started the game in left half back playing good defence. Later in the game she played right wing using the triangle format effectively with Jack and Archie. Ruby was strong in the centre keeping her stick flat when trapping the ball, always a reliable player. Goal scorers were Rory scoring 2 in the first half and Jack scoring 2 in the second half. Well done team!

Newtown Rebels vs Bellarine Thunder 2-0

Rebels put on a strong performance this week, beating Bellarine Thunder 2-0.  Kiah’s sharpshooting skills were on display scoring both goals early in the game.  Despite the ball being in Rebels’ attacking end for most of the game, Rebels were unable to score again due to a tight Thunder defence. Excellent hustle from Adele, Imogen and Mai to keep the ball in the forward line put constant pressure on Thunder.  There was some heat on the ball in the ‘D’ with strong fast unselfish passes that required equally skilful ball control by the receiver. Pat showed some excellent movement and control through congestion almost pulling off two further goals.

More pressure was placed on the Rebels defence in the second half.  At half time, AJ had asked for more switches from the midfield to open the Thunder defence.  The players responded with switches from Sam and Pat to Lachlan and Luca allowing the ball to be moved quickly by Basyl and Brandon out of harms away and back into attack.  The quick switches allowed several scoring opportunities with Teijai and Kiah unlucky not to score due to a very strong Thunder last line of defence.  Rebels showed some real improvement this week using angles and switches to their advantage.  Well done to Isobel who tried her hand as goalie!!!

Newtown Spirit vs  Golden Plains 1-1

Newtown Spirit played Golden Plains on Saturday. Spirit being undefeated were a big target for the winless Golden Plains team, and they came out firing. Golden Plains had speed through the centre which game them many attacking opportunities, but with the return of our regular goalie, Max, and some great defending from Ella, Ely, Max, Riley, Will and Grace, Spirit kept those attacks at bay. Charley and Harry looked dangerous in attack but Golden Plains seized the ball and put a score on the board. Golden Plains followed up shortly after with a short corner but couldn’t convert. Spirit kept their nerve and with a long corner, were able to get through Golden Plains’ defenders and Jamie scored a nice goal to level scores 1-all.

The coach’s instructions at half-time were not to crowd the forwards by keeping the ball wide, to concentrate on firm, accurate hits, and to prevent Golden Plains’ fast breaks particularly through the centre. The team took this advice in and in the second half there was more use of the wings with Will, Harley, Charley and Grace moving the ball up on the left, and Riley, Nick, Bailey and Claudia running hard with the ball on the right. Golden Plains’ fast breaks continued to be disrupted by Ella, and Max defended a few certain goals to keep Golden Plains scoreless in the second half. Spirit almost had a repeat of last week with a few short corners late in the second half, but this week we couldn’t convert. It was another exciting game that ended in a 1-all draw, and while Golden Plains sits low on the ladder we wouldn’t be surprised to see them feature in the finals.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 1-3

A great first half by Strikers to keep Torquay goaless.

Under 17

Newtown Spirit  vs Newtown Strikers 0-4

Spirit had two early opportunities on goal via short corners but weren’t able to convert, unlike Strikers who managed to score from their first short corner. Strikers’ second goal came soon after following a free hit in the Spirit half and some loose defence around the D.

Despite the half time score, the Spirit players were not despondent and held the majority of possession early in the 2nd half, but weren’t able to penetrate the Strikers defence close to goal. Spirit were playing high to put pressure on the opposition goal, but were found exposed when a length of the field counterattack resulted in a 3rd goal for Strikers.  Spirit appeared to lose any momentum they had built early in the half and Strikers were able to score a 4th goal soon after. A gallant effort by all in the face of strong competition and a big thanks to Harry and Max from U14 for helping out.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 4-0

Strikers played a fantastic game of hockey.  It was great to see them bounce back after last week’s loss to Torquay.  Corey and Callum created an impenetrable defence once again.  Ollie was also back making it very difficult for Spirit to get through to the defensive 25.  Up forward, Sam had a couple of near misses, including one hitting the post.  Erin had a dominant game up forward scoring two goals and setting Callum up for one as well.  One of Erin’s goals was scored from a well planned set play from a short corner which is becoming a recurring theme.

Thanks to the U14’s (Ella, Will and Jamie) who filled in and and not only helped our regulars to maintain fresh legs to run out the game but also made valuable contributions in their own right; you are all welcome to play with us again!

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Geelong Jaguars 8-1

Superhero Round. Nick Fury (Coach) gathered his forces to do battle with the mighty villains of planet 12347 in the far off galaxy of Geelong.

The Superheroes came to play against the Mighty Villains in a game of hockey. The game started well with Iron-Man (Lachie) using his jet propeller to switch the ball from one side to the other. He was well backed up by Captain America (Sean), spinning his stick to his mates on the forward line. Hawkeye (Pat) also sent his shot whistling to the forwards. It wasn’t long before Daredevil (Hamish) scored with a nice shot from a short corner. The Mighty Villains struck back and from open play got one past the Hulk (Campbell) to even the score at 1-1. There was plenty of one to one passing and calling, and the Falcon (Clarke) swooped on to a pass and put the ball in the goal. Score 2-1 at half time.

The second half saw many attacks by the Mighty Villains but they came to nothing, thanks to the Hulk, Iron-Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, Falcon and Blade (Nick P). Lots of switching, passing and calling gave our forward line hope. Deadpool (Adham) had the crowd oohing and aahing, with his fast running and funny jokes. The forwards were well backed up by Ant-Man (Nic M) and Thor (Zed) with his mighty thunder stick. Blade scored twice from open play, and then Black Panther (Elgan) set up Deadpool for another goal from open play. Deadpool scored a hat trick with his third goal coming from a hard drive in front of the keeper and in it went. Daredevil had a second shot on the top of the circle, and ended with 2 goals for the game. Star Lord (Jimmy) got in on the act with many moves across the front of the field.

Coach Nick Fury was mighty pleased with a fantastic effort from his team.

Newtown Strikers vs Saints Black 0-5

We knew that Saints would come at us hard and they didn’t disappoint, the game was played at a fast pace with both teams mounting a number of attacking plays. Unfortunately, even though both teams were relatively evenly matched, the Saints midfield were able to overrun our defensive efforts a number of times resulting in the 5 goals scored.

Brodie made a number of great saves with support from Jimmy and our movement out of defense through Carl, Pete, Corey and Tom meant that Thomas, Jonah, Hudson, Hamish and Alex were able to force Saints back onto the defensive.  Big thanks to Ian for being our super sub and helping run the bench. Funnily enough we had a similar start to last season so games like this will be a great baseline to see how much we have improved over the course of this season.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Newtown Strikers 3-1

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Falcons 1-3

Strikers had a really positive game against Falcons on Sunday. The whole match was relatively even with both sides having good procession of the ball. Strikers had some strong runs down the wing with Elese taking it from the back half, getting past everyone and hitting a beautiful goal in the top left corner to make it one all.

Our defence was much better this week with players being manned up but unfortunately a couple of fumbles in the back defence saw Falcons score 2 more goals.  All in all we are working well as a team and getting to know how we all play and we will only improve as the season progresses.

Division 2 Men

Newtown Spirit vs Golden Plains 1-1

Division 2 Women

Newtown Spirit vs Golden Plains 2-8

Having some interchange players provided Spirit with some good running in the first half, and the first part of the game was relatively even. Golden Plains created numerous attacks, but these were well defended by Kellie, Beth, and Rachael. Good co-operation between Rachael and Erin saw the ball moved down the right side of the field to Katie and lifted our spirits with some accurate passing. A nice square pass in the circle by Kirsty saw Katie latch on to the ball with a goal the result.

The second half again saw some pleasing passages of play with Lauren, Jacinta and Deanne showing good teamwork and purposeful passing. Good marking in most cases limited Golden Plains’ successful attempts in the circle. At one stage the score was 2-4.  However, the last part of the second half saw Golden Plains become more dominant and more effective, finding space in the circle to end the game with a score of 2-8.

2017 Hockey Season – April 29/30

With the 2017 hockey season underway, teams are starting to settle into a rhythm, and Round 2 provided some excellent efforts

Kookas

A very enjoyable game of Kookas hockey this week, with the assistance of some bystanders.  Girls vs boys saw some family competition on display. Great passing and good ball control skills by Charlie, with Braydn and Baxter working hard to be in the right position to receive the ball.  Matilda and Emily showed excellent awareness of space and positioning of both team mates and opposition players, and the use of back passes allowed play to switch to team mates with the opportunity to attack. Overall, a great game of hockey.

Under 6 Joeys

Dribbling and scanning skills are improving as the players develop confidence and speed. Some nice spins and reverse stick work this week to avoid getting caught. Strong and accurate passing is also showing progress. Great work by these young players.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit

This week the Strikers fielded a full team. The game started off quite technical with lots of instruction and teaching from the coaches. As the game progressed the players started to get the hang of it with the second half flowing well. The players all starting to display some of their skills with passing to their team mates and calling for the ball. Both the boys (Will and Alex) played well in the middle taking on their opponents with some solid dribbling skills. Matilda was the recipient of the Subway Best Team Player Award this week. Well Done.

Newtown Raiders vs Torquay

Well done to everybody on a great second round. It was great to see everybody really start playing as a team and looking for their team mates to pass the ball to. Well done to Charlie and Hannah who did a fantastic job goal keeping. Chloe, Jesse and Oscar worked very well together in the forward line, especially in passing the ball wide. Lily and Isabelle did a great job in the backline helping to stop many attempts at goal.

Congratulations to Hannah for being awarded the Subway Best Team Player Award!

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers

Spirit had to defend hard in an entertaining match against Strikers when the two Newtown teams met in Under-8 competition at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday. While Spirit enjoyed several runs towards goal, the team was kept on its toes by the opposition who pushed forward at every opportunity during the first half. But Spirit players tackled hard and ran hard, making Strikers work for every ball.

Right wing Michael and centre Juliette showed their determination through constant tackling while Avah intercepted several passes from Strikers players and fed the ball capably to her teammates including Summah on left wing.

At half time Coach Kellie urged her young side to keep their eye on the ball at all times and spread out to boost passing options and prevent crowding. In the second half centre forward Drew took his coach’s words to heart and put in a strong effort, combining well with Michael, while left wing Braydn tackled keenly every chance he got. Baxter worked hard across the half back line, showing good ball control in a quick break towards goal, and Pollyanna provided pace on right wing. Avah, protecting the goals, was quick to snap into action when taking free hits but was sometimes limited in her options. But there were still plenty of pleasing signs that came out of the round-two game including increased calling.

Drew received the Subway Best Team Player award for the game after great two halves. Well done Drew for your fantastic work.

Newtown Rebels vs College White

Rebels displayed excellent skills in defence in the first half and, as the game progressed, their confidence grew and they started to attack more. At half time Colleen spoke about spreading out and staying in position. Rebels dominated the second half, which had a much quicker pace. Tommy scored his first goal of the season while Sophie narrowly missed out on two chances at goal. Genevieve was also key in moving the ball forward and keeping up the strong attack. The rest of the team worked hard in defence and Annabelle was awarded Subway Best Team Player for her improved performance.

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay Tornadoes 0-4

This week saw us play a strong opposition, with them getting to the ball first, having multiple short counters and dominating the play. However, Spirit were able to hold them off multiple times with a strong defence. Torquay scored 4 goals in the first half.

Kellie’s half time chat discussed that we needed to work on getting the ball to our players, ‘marking’ the opposition players, clearing and tacking the ball.  The second half saw Torquay remain goalless….. great defence with Meyah as the goalie. Best Team Player Awards to Max and Hana……Kellie did have a hard time deciding, her dancing around on the spot seemed to help her make a decision. Great game Spirit.

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains 0-5

The Strikers team showed their determination and resilience in the match this week. They faced many short corners and provided strong defence. Every member of the team made great tackles, particularly Anna with her reverse stick work. Thamindu proved a most reliable full-back, stopping the attack numerous times and Alexandra showed some fantastic footwork by clearing heaps of shots on goal. The players are learning to hold their positions and pass out wide, and later in the second half Newtown players were spread well across the field. This allowed some great cross-field passes from Elliott to Charlie who switched it right across the field to Isla for a great attacking run, followed by similar attacks towards goals by Jai and Eliza-May.

I would like to say to the Strikers team members – you all tried your hardest for the whole game. You always played with respect to your team mates and to the opposition and that is what being a good sport is all about. On behalf of your parents and your coach, we are all very proud of you.

Newtown Spirit vs Bellarine Thunder 1-2

Round 2 saw a much improved game by all. We had a full team with the help of Eliza who had a great game despite being out of her age group! Spirit came out of the blocks very fast and had the ball in our circle very quickly. Unfortunately we were unable to convert. Bellarine had a great defense which was hard to get around despite some great positional play up front. One thing that did continue through out the entire game was the fact that the players forgot Pete’s instruction of playing out wide. More often than not the ball would be received/or intercepted but would be put straight back from where it came from!

The second half had our defense being placed under an enormous amount of pressure. Oliver was our volunteer goalie and what a game he had! Anyone would think he had been doing it all the time. 4 times he stopped definite goals and 2 of them were one on one contests! Liam was also kept busy and was solid in defense.

Some big hits from Angus saw the ball rocketed forward into our attack but we were unable to get onto the end of them. Our forwards were certainly not laying idle and we had a passage of play from Mitchell (playing his second game ever!) that effortlessly made his way around a few opposition players with the greatest of ease to have the ball well into our attacking end. He surprised not only his parents but himself as well! Our first goal for the season came from Maggie who followed her hit into the goalie’s pads, controlled the rebound and was able to put the ball into the goal.

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia 1-1

Round 2 proved to be a very tough match against Kardinia ending in a 1-1 draw. Goals were very hard to come by with a strong defence shown on both sides and the first half remaining goal less. Early in the second half Jack scored a lovely goal with some nice assistance by his teammates. Ruby played a great game holding her position and showing good control with her passing shots. Some great passes to the forwards and great assistance in defence saw Adam have a remarkable game. Jamie’s role as a sweeper was commendable, leading the way in defence and giving some nice passes out wide to his teammates. Well done Strikers!

Newtown Rebels vs Torquay 1-1

Rebels put on a strong team display against Torquay this week. In the blink of an eye, Olivia scored an early goal to put the Rebels 1-0 up.  Torquay tried on several occasions to even the score but were unable to get the ball through the impenetrable defence of Lachlan and Luca.  Rebels kept on the attack with the quick feet and swift passing of Basyl, Brandon and Isobel placing continuous pressure on Torquay.

At the break, the message from the coach was to pass the ball around more – to open up the game and Torquay’s defence.  Olivia and Sam opened up with some good switches, creating holes in Torquay’s defence and several early opportunities.  The efforts of Imogen and Adele to keep the ball in Rebels’ forward half was outstanding, putting significant pressure on the Torquay defenders.

Fantastic teamwork by the forwards produced the second goal.  Pat showed excellent vision to pass across goals to Kiah who unselfishly passed the ball to Teijai, who finished the exciting passage of play with a goal.  Teijai continued to look dangerous up forward, and was unlucky not to get a 3rd goal for the team, hitting the bar.  Torquay’s strongest opportunity saw our goalkeeper (Mai) one out with a Torquay player running in to goal.  Mai kept her composure, kicking the ball away on the very last line of defence.

Newtown Spirit vs Geelong Jaguars 8-0

Geelong Jaguars played host to U14 Newtown Spirit on Saturday at Stead Park. Our designated goalie Max H. was away but our other Max H. was happy to volunteer to be goalie for the day. From the get-go, Spirit’s attack was able to make inroads into the Jaguars defence and through Ella we drew a foul in the circle. Jamie received the ball from the short corner and his hit made the back of the net but was disallowed. Spirit defended well all day and Geelong Jaguars were not able to make many entries into their attacking circle. At half-time, Newtown Spirit were up 3-0 with goals to the always dangerous duo of Harry (1) and Jamie (2).

Some second half highlights were Charley always running hard to beat her opponents to the ball, and also having a few good hits at goal, Harry with a nice strong hit off a penalty corner. Sam doing some nice penalty corner pushes, and also some “crumbing” in goals to score his first goal playing in U14s, Will with a nice hit at goals, albeit just a little too wide, Amelia taking the ball from defence deep into attack, and Ella having a nice hit at goal but ultimately defended by the Jaguars goalie.

The final result was Newtown 8-nil with goals to Harry (2), Jamie (5) and Sam (1).

Newtown Spirit vs Golden Plains  7-1

Newtown were out of the blocks in quick fashion against Golden Plains with three early goals to Miles. Golden Plains launched a series of counterattacks and eventually pulled one goal back via a well executed short corner. Newtown scored two further goals in the first half to Tom and Jack, both following short corners. Newtown held a 5:1 lead at half time but the score didn’t reflect how hard Newtown had to work for their goals.

Newtown had far more possession in the second half but only yielded 2 further goals, which is testament to the Golden Plains defence. Olivia had a flurry of shots on goal but was not able to beat the goal keeper or the post(!!), resulting in much oohing and aahing from the sideline supporters. A tough game but good result in the end. Thanks to Jen for keeping goal and Amelia for filling in from U14.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Saints Black 4-3

A long time ago on a hockey pitch on the edge of the galaxy ….. A young team, coached by Master Yoda and his band of Rebel Alliance.

The band of Rebels are: Jabbba the Hutt (Will), Obi-Wan Kenobi (Lachlan), Luke Skywalker (Sean), Qui-Gon Jinn (Tom H), R2D2 (Nic P), Darth Maul (Leo), Ben Skywalker (Pat), Princess Leia (Niko), C3PO (Jimmy), Darth Vader (Adham), Han Solo (Hamish), Chewbacca (Angus), Jar Jar Binks (Zed). The game was against the Imperial Storm Troopers (Saints).

The game started with plenty of open play from both sides. Very good defending from Obi-Wan Kenobi and the flashing light saber of Luke Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Ben Skywalker. Quick passing by the forwards Princess Leia saw the fast Jar Jar Binks supported by Chewbacca and Han Solo to put a score on the board. But the Imperial Stormstroopers came back quickly to even the score. The game went from one side to the other with many a light saber flashing. Darth Maul had control of the middle, with Darth Vader making himself busy in the forward line. Many chances from both teams came and went.

The second half had many more chances. This hockey game had everything. R2D2 at times ran circles around everyone. Plenty of passing was great, but some work on marking opposition players would be useful. Late in the game, Darth Vader fell over the keeper and left the field with an injury, but still the game went on. The Rebel Alliance was getting tired with so many chances. The Imperial Stormtroopers kept on pushing but Jabba the Hutt, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn and Ben Skywalker kept them out. Jar Jar Binks was also great and Princess Leia had a good game. With 2 minutes to go, the Stormtroopers scored. Final score Rebel Alliance 4, Imperial Stormtroopers 3.

May the 4th be with you.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Spirit vs Geelong Jaguars 0-8

Great effort by our defence with Geelong on the attack from the first whistle.  Concentration on the ball and good positioning by Hill, Beth and Eichelle with Andie, Jacinta and Hannah intercepting many attacks in midfield. Persistence by Kellie and Katelyn was able to win the ball and move into the forward line where Katie and De were available. This created a number of forward moves and some shots at goal but without success.

The second half saw Newtown tire, and with no interchange it was hard work to keep up with the speed of the Geelong game. This allowed Geelong to receive the ball with space and time to pass to team mates. The effort shown by Newtown players even though fatigued was excellent, and pressure on the ball carrier often resulted in Newtown gaining the ball.
