Victorian Men’s and Women’s Country Championships

Victorian Men’s and Women’s Country Championships

The Victorian Men’s and Women’s Country Championships are always a great fun weekend of hockey – a great chance to play WITH players from other clubs instead of AGAINST them.

The Championships are held over the Queen’s Birthday weekend June 7 to 9. The Women’s Championships are held at Stead Park, Corio, while the Men’s Championships are played in Melbourne.  There are usually 6 or 7 games for the weekend – but before you faint at the thought – they are shortened games.  Teams from all areas of Victoria participate so it’s also a good chance to catch up with people you may have played with in other clubs and Associations.  More details here.

Hockey Geelong invites players to participate in these teams:

  • Senior men
  • Masters men – must be aged over 35
  • Senior women – A grade and B grade
  • Masters women – must be aged over 35

These Championships are also a great chance for U15 and U17 players to try out this competition.

In 2013, the Hockey Geelong teams finished as Winners in the Men’s Masters, A1 Women and Women’s Masters with the B grade women finishing as Runners Up.  What a great effort, with many Newtown players participating in these teams.

Joeys Hockey for Young Children

Hockey is fun for all ages.

Newtown City Hockey Club offers a ‘Joeys’ program for boys and girls turning 4, 5 and 6 years old.  The program is aimed at children who like playing around with a hockey stick and ball but are a bit young to concentrate on an organised match and strict rules.

It’s a great way for children to learn the basic skills of hockey, with a focus on fun and small games, without organised matches.  The program has proven to be a great preparation for future participation in a Minkey (mini-Hockey) team.
The program is conducted at Lloyd Reserve from 10 to 10.30 am each Saturday, from April to August.

Players should wear comfortable clothing and shoes to run in.  Hockey sticks are available for loan initially.  Players may choose to purchase their own equipment with packages available which include a hockey stick, ball and shinguards.

Uniform is not required.  Each player will be given a tee-shirt to wear, and this is included in the fees charged.

Registration for this program provides cover for Public Liability and Personal Accident insurance.

Saturday Social Hockey – Fun for All

Saturday Social Hockey is Here Again

Newtown City Hockey Club aims to help everyone participate in and enjoy the game of hockey which we all love.

Barriers such as age, lack of fitness or speed, cost may prevent some from enjoying this great game, so we are offering the perfect opportunity to play without worrying about these things.  And as for skills – it’s like riding a bicycle.  If you have played before, you never lose those skills and hockey brain – you just can’t run as fast.  If you haven’t played before, it’s a great chance to learn some skills in a non-competitive atmosphere with a focus on enjoyment and participation.

Come and join the the “Saturday Social” hockey programme.  Games are played on a high quality grass surface at King Lloyd Reserve, Windsor Rd, Newtown at 1.30 pm on Saturday afternoon – just like the old days.

Games are played with 2 halves of 25 minutes each – but any time you need a rest – that’s OK.  The field is marked at 80% of normal field size, meaning less physical wear and tear and less running.  Players include men, women, boys and girls – experienced players, ex-players and beginners – all are welcome.  Come whenever you can – every week or just occasionally.  The program will run until mid-August.

Fees are low – to cover the cost of insurance and basic club membership.

Uniform is not required.  Just wear something comfortable to run in, including some shoes with reasonable grip.  Shinguards and mouthguards are recommended.  Bring your own stick if you have one – or we can loan you one.

School Hockey Clinics Begin

March 17 sees the beginning of the Newtown City Hockey Club’s annual programme of school hockey clinics.

Junior players are our future hockey stars

Founding member of the Club, Alan Barnes, began this programme of school visits in 1977, initially just as an address to the students to invite them to Come and Try Hockey. The programme quickly advanced to include clinics in which the students participated, to get a real idea of what the sport was like. The programme has continued each year, and is one of the major methods by which the Club can let the local community know about its activities.

Typically, the programme sees members of the Club visit anywhere between 7 to 14 schools each year, representing 500 to 1000 students exposed to hockey each year for the past 36 years. Participating students are usually in grades 2, 3 and 4. Interested students are then invited to come and try a Hook In 2 Hockey session.

The programme begins with:

  • Monday March 17 – 9 am to 3.10 pm – Montpellier Primary School
  • Tuesday March 18  – 9 am to 1.30 pm – Roslyn Primary School
  • Thursday March 20 – 9 am to 12.30 pm – Chilwell Primary School
  • Friday March 21 – 9 am to 3.10 pm – Clairvaux Catholic School

If any members are able to assist, please contact us.

2014 Season Launch

2014 Season Launch

Another hockey season is nearly here, and it looks like it’s going to be even better than 2013. We are expecting lots of new members, and some extra teams entered in the Hockey Geelong competition.

So what better excuse is there to get everyone together for a BBQ at our home ground?
