2017 Hockey Season – April 29/30

2017 Hockey Season – April 29/30

With the 2017 hockey season underway, teams are starting to settle into a rhythm, and Round 2 provided some excellent efforts

Kookas

A very enjoyable game of Kookas hockey this week, with the assistance of some bystanders.  Girls vs boys saw some family competition on display. Great passing and good ball control skills by Charlie, with Braydn and Baxter working hard to be in the right position to receive the ball.  Matilda and Emily showed excellent awareness of space and positioning of both team mates and opposition players, and the use of back passes allowed play to switch to team mates with the opportunity to attack. Overall, a great game of hockey.

Under 6 Joeys

Dribbling and scanning skills are improving as the players develop confidence and speed. Some nice spins and reverse stick work this week to avoid getting caught. Strong and accurate passing is also showing progress. Great work by these young players.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit

This week the Strikers fielded a full team. The game started off quite technical with lots of instruction and teaching from the coaches. As the game progressed the players started to get the hang of it with the second half flowing well. The players all starting to display some of their skills with passing to their team mates and calling for the ball. Both the boys (Will and Alex) played well in the middle taking on their opponents with some solid dribbling skills. Matilda was the recipient of the Subway Best Team Player Award this week. Well Done.

Newtown Raiders vs Torquay

Well done to everybody on a great second round. It was great to see everybody really start playing as a team and looking for their team mates to pass the ball to. Well done to Charlie and Hannah who did a fantastic job goal keeping. Chloe, Jesse and Oscar worked very well together in the forward line, especially in passing the ball wide. Lily and Isabelle did a great job in the backline helping to stop many attempts at goal.

Congratulations to Hannah for being awarded the Subway Best Team Player Award!

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers

Spirit had to defend hard in an entertaining match against Strikers when the two Newtown teams met in Under-8 competition at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday. While Spirit enjoyed several runs towards goal, the team was kept on its toes by the opposition who pushed forward at every opportunity during the first half. But Spirit players tackled hard and ran hard, making Strikers work for every ball.

Right wing Michael and centre Juliette showed their determination through constant tackling while Avah intercepted several passes from Strikers players and fed the ball capably to her teammates including Summah on left wing.

At half time Coach Kellie urged her young side to keep their eye on the ball at all times and spread out to boost passing options and prevent crowding. In the second half centre forward Drew took his coach’s words to heart and put in a strong effort, combining well with Michael, while left wing Braydn tackled keenly every chance he got. Baxter worked hard across the half back line, showing good ball control in a quick break towards goal, and Pollyanna provided pace on right wing. Avah, protecting the goals, was quick to snap into action when taking free hits but was sometimes limited in her options. But there were still plenty of pleasing signs that came out of the round-two game including increased calling.

Drew received the Subway Best Team Player award for the game after great two halves. Well done Drew for your fantastic work.

Newtown Rebels vs College White

Rebels displayed excellent skills in defence in the first half and, as the game progressed, their confidence grew and they started to attack more. At half time Colleen spoke about spreading out and staying in position. Rebels dominated the second half, which had a much quicker pace. Tommy scored his first goal of the season while Sophie narrowly missed out on two chances at goal. Genevieve was also key in moving the ball forward and keeping up the strong attack. The rest of the team worked hard in defence and Annabelle was awarded Subway Best Team Player for her improved performance.

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay Tornadoes 0-4

This week saw us play a strong opposition, with them getting to the ball first, having multiple short counters and dominating the play. However, Spirit were able to hold them off multiple times with a strong defence. Torquay scored 4 goals in the first half.

Kellie’s half time chat discussed that we needed to work on getting the ball to our players, ‘marking’ the opposition players, clearing and tacking the ball.  The second half saw Torquay remain goalless….. great defence with Meyah as the goalie. Best Team Player Awards to Max and Hana……Kellie did have a hard time deciding, her dancing around on the spot seemed to help her make a decision. Great game Spirit.

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains 0-5

The Strikers team showed their determination and resilience in the match this week. They faced many short corners and provided strong defence. Every member of the team made great tackles, particularly Anna with her reverse stick work. Thamindu proved a most reliable full-back, stopping the attack numerous times and Alexandra showed some fantastic footwork by clearing heaps of shots on goal. The players are learning to hold their positions and pass out wide, and later in the second half Newtown players were spread well across the field. This allowed some great cross-field passes from Elliott to Charlie who switched it right across the field to Isla for a great attacking run, followed by similar attacks towards goals by Jai and Eliza-May.

I would like to say to the Strikers team members – you all tried your hardest for the whole game. You always played with respect to your team mates and to the opposition and that is what being a good sport is all about. On behalf of your parents and your coach, we are all very proud of you.

Newtown Spirit vs Bellarine Thunder 1-2

Round 2 saw a much improved game by all. We had a full team with the help of Eliza who had a great game despite being out of her age group! Spirit came out of the blocks very fast and had the ball in our circle very quickly. Unfortunately we were unable to convert. Bellarine had a great defense which was hard to get around despite some great positional play up front. One thing that did continue through out the entire game was the fact that the players forgot Pete’s instruction of playing out wide. More often than not the ball would be received/or intercepted but would be put straight back from where it came from!

The second half had our defense being placed under an enormous amount of pressure. Oliver was our volunteer goalie and what a game he had! Anyone would think he had been doing it all the time. 4 times he stopped definite goals and 2 of them were one on one contests! Liam was also kept busy and was solid in defense.

Some big hits from Angus saw the ball rocketed forward into our attack but we were unable to get onto the end of them. Our forwards were certainly not laying idle and we had a passage of play from Mitchell (playing his second game ever!) that effortlessly made his way around a few opposition players with the greatest of ease to have the ball well into our attacking end. He surprised not only his parents but himself as well! Our first goal for the season came from Maggie who followed her hit into the goalie’s pads, controlled the rebound and was able to put the ball into the goal.

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia 1-1

Round 2 proved to be a very tough match against Kardinia ending in a 1-1 draw. Goals were very hard to come by with a strong defence shown on both sides and the first half remaining goal less. Early in the second half Jack scored a lovely goal with some nice assistance by his teammates. Ruby played a great game holding her position and showing good control with her passing shots. Some great passes to the forwards and great assistance in defence saw Adam have a remarkable game. Jamie’s role as a sweeper was commendable, leading the way in defence and giving some nice passes out wide to his teammates. Well done Strikers!

Newtown Rebels vs Torquay 1-1

Rebels put on a strong team display against Torquay this week. In the blink of an eye, Olivia scored an early goal to put the Rebels 1-0 up.  Torquay tried on several occasions to even the score but were unable to get the ball through the impenetrable defence of Lachlan and Luca.  Rebels kept on the attack with the quick feet and swift passing of Basyl, Brandon and Isobel placing continuous pressure on Torquay.

At the break, the message from the coach was to pass the ball around more – to open up the game and Torquay’s defence.  Olivia and Sam opened up with some good switches, creating holes in Torquay’s defence and several early opportunities.  The efforts of Imogen and Adele to keep the ball in Rebels’ forward half was outstanding, putting significant pressure on the Torquay defenders.

Fantastic teamwork by the forwards produced the second goal.  Pat showed excellent vision to pass across goals to Kiah who unselfishly passed the ball to Teijai, who finished the exciting passage of play with a goal.  Teijai continued to look dangerous up forward, and was unlucky not to get a 3rd goal for the team, hitting the bar.  Torquay’s strongest opportunity saw our goalkeeper (Mai) one out with a Torquay player running in to goal.  Mai kept her composure, kicking the ball away on the very last line of defence.

Newtown Spirit vs Geelong Jaguars 8-0

Geelong Jaguars played host to U14 Newtown Spirit on Saturday at Stead Park. Our designated goalie Max H. was away but our other Max H. was happy to volunteer to be goalie for the day. From the get-go, Spirit’s attack was able to make inroads into the Jaguars defence and through Ella we drew a foul in the circle. Jamie received the ball from the short corner and his hit made the back of the net but was disallowed. Spirit defended well all day and Geelong Jaguars were not able to make many entries into their attacking circle. At half-time, Newtown Spirit were up 3-0 with goals to the always dangerous duo of Harry (1) and Jamie (2).

Some second half highlights were Charley always running hard to beat her opponents to the ball, and also having a few good hits at goal, Harry with a nice strong hit off a penalty corner. Sam doing some nice penalty corner pushes, and also some “crumbing” in goals to score his first goal playing in U14s, Will with a nice hit at goals, albeit just a little too wide, Amelia taking the ball from defence deep into attack, and Ella having a nice hit at goal but ultimately defended by the Jaguars goalie.

The final result was Newtown 8-nil with goals to Harry (2), Jamie (5) and Sam (1).

Newtown Spirit vs Golden Plains  7-1

Newtown were out of the blocks in quick fashion against Golden Plains with three early goals to Miles. Golden Plains launched a series of counterattacks and eventually pulled one goal back via a well executed short corner. Newtown scored two further goals in the first half to Tom and Jack, both following short corners. Newtown held a 5:1 lead at half time but the score didn’t reflect how hard Newtown had to work for their goals.

Newtown had far more possession in the second half but only yielded 2 further goals, which is testament to the Golden Plains defence. Olivia had a flurry of shots on goal but was not able to beat the goal keeper or the post(!!), resulting in much oohing and aahing from the sideline supporters. A tough game but good result in the end. Thanks to Jen for keeping goal and Amelia for filling in from U14.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Saints Black 4-3

A long time ago on a hockey pitch on the edge of the galaxy ….. A young team, coached by Master Yoda and his band of Rebel Alliance.

The band of Rebels are: Jabbba the Hutt (Will), Obi-Wan Kenobi (Lachlan), Luke Skywalker (Sean), Qui-Gon Jinn (Tom H), R2D2 (Nic P), Darth Maul (Leo), Ben Skywalker (Pat), Princess Leia (Niko), C3PO (Jimmy), Darth Vader (Adham), Han Solo (Hamish), Chewbacca (Angus), Jar Jar Binks (Zed). The game was against the Imperial Storm Troopers (Saints).

The game started with plenty of open play from both sides. Very good defending from Obi-Wan Kenobi and the flashing light saber of Luke Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Ben Skywalker. Quick passing by the forwards Princess Leia saw the fast Jar Jar Binks supported by Chewbacca and Han Solo to put a score on the board. But the Imperial Stormstroopers came back quickly to even the score. The game went from one side to the other with many a light saber flashing. Darth Maul had control of the middle, with Darth Vader making himself busy in the forward line. Many chances from both teams came and went.

The second half had many more chances. This hockey game had everything. R2D2 at times ran circles around everyone. Plenty of passing was great, but some work on marking opposition players would be useful. Late in the game, Darth Vader fell over the keeper and left the field with an injury, but still the game went on. The Rebel Alliance was getting tired with so many chances. The Imperial Stormtroopers kept on pushing but Jabba the Hutt, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn and Ben Skywalker kept them out. Jar Jar Binks was also great and Princess Leia had a good game. With 2 minutes to go, the Stormtroopers scored. Final score Rebel Alliance 4, Imperial Stormtroopers 3.

May the 4th be with you.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Spirit vs Geelong Jaguars 0-8

Great effort by our defence with Geelong on the attack from the first whistle.  Concentration on the ball and good positioning by Hill, Beth and Eichelle with Andie, Jacinta and Hannah intercepting many attacks in midfield. Persistence by Kellie and Katelyn was able to win the ball and move into the forward line where Katie and De were available. This created a number of forward moves and some shots at goal but without success.

The second half saw Newtown tire, and with no interchange it was hard work to keep up with the speed of the Geelong game. This allowed Geelong to receive the ball with space and time to pass to team mates. The effort shown by Newtown players even though fatigued was excellent, and pressure on the ball carrier often resulted in Newtown gaining the ball.

2016 Hockey Season – Grand Final

2016 Hockey Season – Grand Final

The 2016 Geelong hockey season came to a close with a very exciting day of Grand Final matches, and successes earned by great efforts during the year.

Kookas

Very impressive skills and understanding of the game from new players Lachlan and Rory was a highlight of this week’s game. Great teamwork and use of space, with both teams using switches to players on the opposite side of the field to create attacks. Ella, Sam and Lachlan were a potent opposition despite being outnumbered. Matilda, Jai and Rory put great pressure on the ball carrier and blocked many attacks, then turned possession to their advantage. A very close scoreline ended the game with great fun had by all.

Newtown Rebels vs Newtown Spirit 0-0

An exhibition match between the Premiers of the Under 11 North and Under 11 South competitions, Newtown Rebels and Newtown Spirit, finished off the hockey season for these players. The game showed the great standard of skill and depth of talent at this level. The game was fairly even, with both teams having plenty of attacking moves. Great ball control skills from both teams, and Newtown Rebels attacked well through Olivia, Basyl, Sam and Patrick. But both teams had great defence setups too, with Luca doing well for Rebels. Angus, Liam and Oliver held off many of Rebels attacks and turned the ball to Spirit’s advantage. Late in the game Max went for a run into an open goal and a goal to Spirit seemed a certain thing, but it was not to be. The game finished with a 0-0 draw – a fitting result for such a great game.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 1-5

The U13 Hockey Grand Final was played between the two Newtown teams Spirit and Strikers.  The Spirit team were very excited about playing in the Grand Final and really enjoyed the game.  Everyone worked really hard and there was some lovely team hockey on display again.  The Strikers were a strong side which put a lot of pressure on our defence.  Jarrett played a fantastic game down back stopping numerous Striker attacks and Max in goals also made some great saves.  Harry S stepped up to take a short corner and slotted a great goal towards the end of the first half.  A big congratulations to the Strikers on their win they played a great game and had a fantastic season.  To the Spirit team, well done you all played amazing and you should all be very proud of making it through to the Grand Final.  Thanks for a great hockey season and look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 3-1

Wow! What an amazing game and a terrific reward for the teams’ effort throughout the season. The match was another tense affair, with both teams displaying great skill, desperation and sportsmanship throughout.

Torquay had the better of the opening forcing the Spirit to defend desperately. Eventually Torquay found an opening and scored after 10 minutes. Rather than be deterred the Spirit lifted their effort and eventually gained the ascendency. It wasn’t long before the Spirit leveled the score with a great goal to Lachie. The Spirit continued to pressure Torquay and a scrambled goal to Amber saw them take a well-deserved lead into half time.

After the break both teams continued to look dangerous when attacking but neither could capitalise on their opportunities. Fantastic goal keeping and desperate defending repeatedly denied Torquay. The Spirit maintained their intensity and continued to combine beautifully as a team. Eventually another scrambled goal to Matt gave the team some breathing space
and they held on until the final whistle

All players should be extremely proud of their success as well as the way they represented themselves, the team and the club. It has been fantastic to watch the improvement in skill and confidence of all players during the hockey season. A big thank you to Niko and Brendan for coaching the team – the players’ improvement and success is a reflection of your efforts.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia 1-2 – in extra time with a golden goal to Kardinia

Full of hope and optimism, and a hint of emotional reflection (for those of us with top age players), we all arrived ready for a closely fought Grand Final. Kardinia have been playing better each game, as they moved towards the GF, so the expectation was that they would be putting up a strong competitive effort.

From the outset, it was on, with Kardinia alternating with Newtown in attack – the defensive pressure   applied was impressive, and despite several opportunities to score by way of PC’s, Newtown were unable to convert early in the game.
However our defense was strong as well, and with commitment and a bit of luck, Newtown too defended some efforts by Kardinia to score in PC’s, reaching half time, nil all. Tension was evident with both teams desperate to score. Kardinia were able to put one in first and allowed the psychological advantage over Newtown to raise the pressure in the second half. Some great efforts in defense by Tom, Dan and Nick P, prevented further scoring from Kardinia, though the clock was ticking down with still no score from Newtown.

Finally some great play to move the ball up into our attack and the opportunity to score was taken with a lovely angled field goal by Gus to equal the score 1:1 just minutes before the final whistle. Into extra time, it was looking positive for Newtown with early part in attack and several PC’s in a row however again, the set ups didn’t come off and opportunity lost. Kardinia strong on the ball, were able to return the ball into their attack and with a PC, converted to a goal, WON the match in the first period of extra time.

What  a tense and mercurial game, that could’ve gone either way for much of it. Well done Spirit on a really positive hockey season. It’s been a privilege watching our players over such a long time – Dan Smith, Nick Proebstl, Tom McDonald, Alex Birse, Gus McKinnon as well as Thomas and Luke Pearson from Strikers, have played their last junior match.  They are a lovely group of young men, that makes me feel positive about the future and the contribution that our boys will make.

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 5-0

“When a defining moment comes along, you can do one of two things. Define the moment, or let the moment define you”

Each Falcon who played on Saturday evening had a defining moment, a moment that they will carry with them for the rest of their career…

  • Jimmy J’s goal in the early stages of the game was an inspiration, a piece of craftsmanship worthy of unlimited praise.
  • So too Mark’s work in the centre of the pitch, guiding the ship, controlling the tempo, posing for photographs in the Advertiser.
  • Adham H made a full stretch diving trap, one single smooth motion that brought the crowd to its feet and Torquay to its knees.
  • Michael was so cool down back; The Iceman. He was the one who never flinched, never wavered in his execution of skill or bearded manliness.
  • Nick H was dangerous up forward, ensuring the Torquay defenders remained nervous and combining brilliantly with Nick M.
  • Simon in goals was important at the beginning of the second half when a run of Torquay short corners threatened a comeback. If Torquay had of scored during this period the game could have taken a very different course.
  • Chriso’s backstick skills complimented nicely with Adam G’s cunning defence. Adam’s defensive post work on short corners struck fear into the heart’s of the Torquay attackers.
  • Speaking of fear, for the Torquay side the one-two combination of Lachlan and Sean in defence was like wolves howling at the door. Sean’s dalliance up forward proved successful.
  • Kieran SD produced a breathtaking short corner flick that inspired wild celebration and much fist pumping.
  • Zed played his best match of the season, broken eye socket and all.
  • Our fearless Captain Leo dashed here there and everywhere, executing “The Sling” with breathtaking grace and punishing speed.
  • Will was our best player, dazzling stick skills and fancy footwork allowed a seamless transition from defence to attack.

While there were many highlights during the game, perhaps its fair to say, there was no truly dominant player on the pitch. A more accurate reflection of our performance was that each player played their role, executed the game plan and most importantly, thoroughly enjoyed themselves. To me that is more important than the final score, medal or flag.

Thank you to all those who supported us on Saturday night and throughout the hockey season. Thank you to those players who played with us during the season but couldn’t be part of our grand final team such as Clarke R., Luke H and David C. Thank you to Lachlan Birse for being Team Manager extraordinaire. Thank you to Deb as Head Coach, and to Gordon for his work and commitment as Men’s Convenor. Thankyou to the Newtown Club Committee and other senior members of the club for their tireless work ensuring we continue to improve in all aspects of our club.

May next season bring more hockey…

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 2-3

Newtown took to the field with some anticipation, having had some great matches during the hockey season against Torquay. Torquay created lots of running in the midfield early in the game and despite great position and great effort by Deb, Bec W, Ainsley and Penny were able to make their way into the circle. The first goal in the game came from Torquay, mid-height into the goal and just out of the keeper’s reach. Newtown redoubled their efforts and began to create some attack of our own, with Jess W, Nicole, Bec C and Jacquie making great space and running well. Torquay scored again to make it 2-0. However, this did not deter the Falcons players, and after half time, they came out with energy and determination  and began to control the play. Two goals on the board brought the game to an even footing, with Elese working hard all across the field. Another goal to Torquay 3-2 and you might have thought that Newtown was finished – but that wasn’t the case. Continued hard work saw a number of scrambles in front of the goal but without the desired result. A penalty corner earned right on the final whistle could have taken the game to a draw and extra time, but it wasn’t to be.

A fantastic effort by Newtown Falcons to reach the Grand Final and a great game by all the players.

2016 Hockey Season – Preliminary Final

2016 Hockey Season – Preliminary Final

The Preliminary Finals for the 2016 hockey season provided us with some great highlights as well as some sadness. With 6 teams playing, it was fantastic to see 4 of them make it through to the Grand Final next week. Commiserations to the 2 teams which were eliminated, but we are extremely proud of their efforts this year and congratulate them on their achievements and their dedication. Grand Final Day is going to be an absolutely fantastic day, and we will be cheering loudly for all our teams.

Kookas Midweek

No finals for this group of keen hockey players, but it is extremely pleasing to see the development in the skills and game play during the year. It was great to have Georgia, Abby and Lachlan join us and show such good understanding of the tactics of hockey despite their recent introduction to the game. Lachlan worked well with Sam S, finding great spaces to receive the ball and good skills to achieve passes to team mates. Abby and Georgia worked well together for Team Orange, providing options on the wings and moving the ball along the side line well. Some great running by Jai, cutting to receive the passes into space in front of the goal. Ella’s speed and reach always makes it very hard for the opposition to get past her, and her disposal to team mates created lots of attack for her team. Amy gained possession with good focus on the ball and in good position and made some great passes to pressure the opposition.

Newtown Strikers vs Bellarine Lightning 1-0

The Strikers are through to the Grand Final after a hard fought 1-0 win against the Bellarine Lightning.

Bellarine have been an excellent team all year and Saturday proved no exception.  The game started with the Strikers firmly on the back foot playing a hesitant brand of hockey, perhaps thinking of the consequences that a loss would bring.  With little continuity Bellarine were able to press forward regularly and when the occasional Newtown attacks were thwarted with a clearing hit there seemed to be multiple players from Bellarine waiting for the counter.  A difficult first half.  Gradually the Strikers worked into the game and created opportunities but without Angus S in goal and Angus R in defence the game would have been out of reach early.  Half time 0-0.

At half time Coach Robson calmly delivered some home truths and encouragement to the players and it seemed to be the spark that was needed.  In a much better second half the Strikers play was characterised by second efforts, hard running, stout defence and the opportunities that this type of play delivers.  There were still chances for Bellarine and Angus S played out of his skin in goals to keep a clean sheet.  Ella streamed up and down the wing, Harry, Harrison, Kade and Miles were creative and Sam R delivered a great deadlock breaking goal.

In all, a terrific win to earn the right to a replay against the Newtown Spirit this Saturday.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 2-0

Newtown Spirit advanced to the grand final after defeating Newtown Strikers 2-0 in a high-quality elimination final. The Spirit got off to a shaky start to the match with the Strikers controlling the early play. Desperate defending and exceptional goal keeping prevented the Strikers from capitalising. The Spirit eventually worked their way into the game and started to display the confidence and teamwork shown the previous week. After a period of ascendency, the Spirit eventually hit the scoreboard, with a goal to Tom. Both teams continued to look dangerous when attacking but neither could capitalise on their opportunities.

The evenness of the contest continued in the second half with both teams enjoying good periods of play. The tension amongst the spectators grew as the Spirit hung on grimly to the one goal advantage. The players continued to combine beautifully as a team and, after a period of sustained attack, Miles was able to seal the victory with just over 2 minutes to go. Both teams played the game with great spirit and sportsmanship and should be proud of their efforts.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 0-2

Last Saturday’s semi final brought the 2016 season to a close for the Newtown Strikers, going down 2 nil in an action packed game against Newtown Spirit.

Both teams and all players gave their all with the better team winning on the day. After the full time whistle both teams came together for a Maroon and White Newtown photo, showing the strength of Newtown’s junior teams.

The Grand Final next week will be played between the Spirit and Torquay, go Newtown.

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia 0-5

Last week when we came up against the Spirit, all of our players were 100% fit and we played an outstanding game.  This week we were a bit more challenged with a few players recovering from various illnesses and some playing in the U15 game immediately before.  In contrast Kardinia turned up with their “A” team who were all fresh and ready to fight for a Grand Final place.  Kardinia played very well and flooded their backline whenever we pushed forward.  They tagged our two Tom’s making it difficult for our regular goal scorers to get onto the scoreboard.  We manned up well, with Hudson, Luke H and Ollie limiting their attacks and rebounding effectively, limiting the half time score to 0-1.  We felt we had a chance to bounce back in the second half.  Despite all of our players digging deep and working hard, Kardinia just played better on the day.  Our fatigue kicked in late in the second half and unfortunately the score line didn’t do justice to what has been a great year of hockey by the Strikers.  We have a young team and most will be playing again next year, so watch out competition!  Well done to Tom P and Luke P for reaching the end of their junior hockey careers and hopefully you both continue to enjoy senior hockey.

Newtown Falcons vs Saints 4-1

On a balmy Saturday evening, out old Corio way,

was a team of white male Falcons looking for somewhere to play;

They sidled up to Stead Park, almost 50 minutes early,

Coach no-beard nearly had a stroke and didn’t look one bit surly;

Now long warm ups can sometimes work, other times not in your favour,

so the boys had a rest in the middle of the pitch, with plenty of time to savour;

The game actually got started, against the Saints the Falcons sure looked good,

Pinnie and Rosso controlled the match, while 4 goals came like they should;

The second half was not as pleasant, perhaps the boys were getting tired,

after all we’d warmed up for 40 minutes, so the legs were feeling fried;

But in the end the siren sounded, Adham sure was puffed,

Sean and Lachlan had been pillars down back, and the Nicks were most certainly stuffed;

So if you’re bored this Saturday 5:30, with nothing else to do’s,

please come on down to old Stead Park, and bring some nice warm shoes.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Geelong 2-1

Facing up to Geelong who had led the D1 Women’s competition for much of the year saw Newtown Falcons start the game with anticipation, and expecting a hard match. Geelong started fast and caught our players off guard, scoring the first goal of the game. However, Newtown remained focussed and continued fighting hard to create attacking opportunities, and levelled the score with a strong attack and great work from forwards Bec C, Phoebe, Jacqui, Jess and Emily. We played a very good first half in both attack and defence stopping Geelong from scoring any more in the first half. Great keeping by Jessie and steady midfield defence by Deb, Bec W, Elese, Tiahna and Kelly limited Geelong’s opportunities.

After half time our girls decided to attack hard and some fast play along the wide spaces resulted in another goal. The team played a very good defensive game with Sam, Ainsley and Penny adept at stopping our opposition from scoring again for the half. Goals scored by Bec C and Tiahna.  The team played a very strong game to defeat Geelong and were delighted with the result. Good luck to the Falcons womens team for the Grand Final against Torquay.

2016 Hockey Season – Semi-Finals

The 2016 hockey season is fast nearing the end, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still watch some fantastic hockey, and the Semi-Finals this week provided a feast of great hockey. The effort and teamwork was superb, all the way from our Under 13 players to our senior men and women.

Kookas Midweek

No rain for the Kookas game this week so we were able to get out on the field and really use the space for a great game of hockey. Marcus and Hugo joined us and added some bite to the attack for Team Red with great use of space and vision to find team mates Amy and Ella in good position. Some lovely passing for players to run on to saw some great touches rewarded in front of goal. Sam H and Sam S continued to switch the play to advantage for Team Orange and Matilda was focused and always ready to put pressure on the opposition. Great ball control skills from Jai and good use of his team mates helped move the ball into attack for Orange. A very enjoyable game with great skills and teamwork by all.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 0-1

The first final saw the Strikers meet the Spirit in an all Newtown affair. What followed was probably the tightest and most desperate hockey we have seen  for the season.  The Spirit finally broke a 0-0 all deadlock with 6 minutes to  play and despite some close shaves that is where the score stayed for a  deserved Spirit  victory.

During the first half both teams had periods in attack/defence with the Spirit  forcing the Strikers wide or playing long balls though the midfield and  forcing the Strikers to double back in defence.  There were a number of  terrific efforts where Ella took long runs down the left wing but  ultimately there was a lack of support to make good these attacks.  Miles  ran tirelessly from defence to attack and back again, Olivia put  in multiple efforts up and down the field, Angus R put in a number of  goal saving clearances with his powerful strikes and Flynn was creative. Oscar created perhaps the chance of the half as the goal keeper  desperately covered his shot. At half time the score was nil all.

The second half was played at either end of the field.  The Spirit winning  repeat short corners and placing pressure on the defence while the Strikers  played the counter attack.  Harry created some terrific chances on  the counter almost scoring on multiple occasions while the team literally ran  themselves to a standstill.  Sam ran through the middle creating  chances.  Jonah stopped a number of free flowing attacks from the fleet  footed Spirit.  Angus S faced down countless attacks on  goal from waves of Spirit players preventing a lopsided scoreline.

While the team lost its first match for the season, as a group of parents we  could not be prouder of the level of effort put in by the players and to  nearly pinch what would have been a most meritorious victory.  Congratulations  to the Spirit on an excellent team game.  Next week the Strikers play again  for the right to a rematch for the Spirit.

Semi-Final 2016 hockey season

Under 13 – Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 1-0

What a great game of hockey played between the two U13 Newtown teams. It was a close hard-fought game with Jamie scoring a nice goal in the second half to give Spirit a 1-0 win. Well done to Strikers who played strong hockey even though they were missing some key players. A big congratulations to the Spirit team who once again played great hockey to go straight into the Grand Final. Awesome job guys and hope to see you all at training to sharpen the skills for Saturday week.

Good luck Strikers for this Saturday! If you’re not doing anything this Saturday morning, I’m sure they would appreciate the cheering and support!!

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 0-4

What an excellent effort Newtown  Strikers put in this weekend as we took the pitch against Torquay. The game was by turns pressured, busy and went from our end to theirs and while the scores didn’t go in our favour, we were winners in our continued effort and really came undone in the last five minutes when they scored two quick goals. Everyone ran hard and put in 200 percent, running down the ball and always keeping going. Great positioning by many, bringing up a timely reminder that there were a few times where your teammates were in a great position but we failed to use them. Look for options, and create options! All the best for this week everyone. We look forward to Ella and Will back on our side this week for the game against our Newtown opposition. Win or lose, it’s been a season to be proud of.

Newtown Spirit vs Bellarine Storm 6-2

Newtown Spirit defeated Bellarine 6-2 in a highly entertaining elimination semi-final. The Spirit got off to a strong start to the match controlling play from the outset and capitalised within the first 6 minutes with a goal from Miles. The team combined brilliantly out of defence and through the middle of the pitch, creating opportunities in the forward half. To Bellarine’s credit they defended tirelessly before Lachie inevitably scored with a goal in the 17th minute, another followed 5 minutes later. The Spirit were unlucky to concede a late goal from a penalty corner resulting in a 3-1 score line at the break.

The start of the second half saw a reversal of roles from the first with Bellarine controlling play, scoring an early goal and continually attacking. The Spirit defended grimly with Angus, Matt, Harry and Josh in goal, valiantly defending the last line. To the team’s credit, even when on the back foot, players continued to look to share the ball. Eventually, through the hard work of all players, the Spirit again gained the ascendency and a goal to Olivia with a deflection from a shot by Amber saw the margin back to 2 goals and Niko’s heart rate back below 200 BPM. After this the Spirit enjoyed the fruits of their hard work with Lachie continuously distributing the ball with precision out of the back half, Jemma, Miles and Amber providing great run out wide and Declan, Tom and Olivia offering attacking options. A further two goals (Matt and Miles) saw the final result a well deserved 6-2 victory in the team’s best game (so far!) for the season.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 5-4 in ‘golden goal’ extra time

Such a beautiful day today. What a great setting for a tight Semi Final against our rival Newtown Strikers. Always promising to be a close game, Strikers came out firing against us – slow to switch on, Spirit allowed Strikers all too much freedom, by defending loosely. Strikers were playing a very solid team game and despite many opportunities by way of Penalty corners, our scoring was severely limited by Strikers defensive pressure and some impressive goal keeping throughout the game by Luka. Spirit were two  goals behind early on in 1st  half and to their credit,  didn’t go into panic mode. Patches of good hockey from Spirit were revealed with Gus eventually able to set up with a lovely pass to bro Jo, and score our first goal.

Half time saw us trailing 2:3 and allowed some helpful insights by Don, as well as from Josh our GK – how NOT to score!! Much more productive and switched on second half for Spirit, with some impressive defensive efforts on the wing by Caleb and Cassidy. Tom and Dan were working hard in defence and limiting more of Strikers’ opportunity to score.  A score equalizing goal from Gus, took some of the pressure off, however Strikers continued to press, and play with purpose. The effort and team play from Strikers was impressive, and forced Spirit to work hard to stay in the game.

Despite another 7 or more PC’s, Spirit was unable to convert, and with some ongoing pressure and attack from Strikers, Spirit were again trailing 4:3, with the clock ticking down. Again, Bronte and Monique were positioning themselves well and all players at times were working hard to achieve something from their efforts. An equalizing 4th goal was scored by Gus however Spirit were unable to convert opportunities to win within match time.

Extra time began with some tense and stressful effort!! I’m not good with it!! Spirit were lucky to get away with the win this time, with Gus scoring the Golden Goal, however huge congratulations to Strikers for their team game and so nearly getting the win. We really will be barracking for Strikers against Kardinia in the PF next Saturday so that we can replay today’s game in the GF!! Well done Spirit.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 4-5

We came up against our intra-club rival for the first round of the finals; the only team we have not beaten this year.  And WOW; it was game on!  You will not see too many local junior hockey games played like this.  I don’t know how many of the players had been watching the Olympic hockey but I’m sure it must have influenced some of them because the standard was sensational.  We jumped off to an early lead with tomma-Tom P scoring a nice early goal to get us off to a good start.  Spirit fought back hard but through good teamwork and passing we had the ball back in the forward line; a great pass from Oscar at the baseline to Corey at the top of the D allowed Corey to slap one in and make it 2-0 at about the 7 minute mark of the game.  We hadn’t dreamt of such a great start and we knew Spirit would not lie down and hand us the game that easily.  Our defence was superb, led by Hudson calling the shorts from full back.  Luke H ensured that their centre forward didn’t score any goals and Jen covered her opposing wing well intercepting many of their passes out to the wing. And what would the scoreline have looked like if it wasn’t for Luka?  We certainly wouldn’t have made it all the way into golden goal time without all the saves that he made.  Jack not only kept a close eye on one of the Spirit’s more dangerous forwards but switched to offensive mode seamlessly when we required to rebound.  Luke P’s speed is really starting to show with  another week in the midfield as he tagged his opposition players and made sure he got in the way of their forward thrusts;   Luke’s a regular at training every week and the impact of that dedication is showing.

The Spirit certainly fought back as we expected and scored the next two goals.  From then on it was goal-for-goal.  Will made some great leads into the forward gaps with clear calling that allowed the mid-fielders to distribute it out to him effectively and set up forward attacks.  Whenever we thought the game was slipping away in the second half, Tom M reached into his bag of tricks and seemed to find something special as he scored two freakish goals that even got him fist-pumping.

Unfortunately the Spirit were able to score the first goal in golden goal time to seal the game which means we will have to take on Kardinia next week.  For those who weren’t there, this game was an epic; not only for the result but the standard of play.  It was a very entertaining game for the spectators with lots of hooting and hollering on the sidelines.  Newtown has lots of good hockey to look forward to.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 2-3

Newtown Strikers vs Saints 1-4

Well, you can’t say that we didn’t try.  Going into half time we had Saints on the ropes after going toe to toe for the first 35 minutes and scoring a short corner from a great brotherly effort from the Hinetts.

Going into the second half we knew that it would be tough, especially due to the fact that as usual our full team sheet evaporated before the start of the game with two players not turning up and the ridiculously bad fortune of Jimmy who chipped a tooth during the warm-up after a freak ball ricocheted from the group warming up the goalie and hit him on the side line.

That being said, we resolved to continue playing the hockey that had gotten us into the top 4, a combination of attacking the ball with numbers and working it up the field together, keeping control before releasing to the forward line.  For the first 5 minutes it was looking positive, even though Saints had obviously gone up a notch.  Unfortunately, Saints scored an equalizing goal and as our players become more fatigued and an additional injury had us down to 10 players, more gaps began to open which allowed them to score another 3 goals before the end of the game.

I think everyone that came out to watch the game would agree that it was a gutsy performance from the Strikers. Considering the double digit thrashings that we had been receiving at the start of the season, I’m incredibly proud of the improvement that the team has made this season, especially considering that as much as our skills have improved I think it’s the way that we came together as a group which has been the deciding factor in the teams success.

Looking forward to building on what we have achieved next year (and hopefully having a bench…)

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Bellarine 3-2

A great game by Falcons showing what the team is capable of. Newtown attacked from the beginning and had the majority of the play in the first 15 minutes of the game. Great play in midfield by Deb, Bec W and Tiahna blocked most Bellarine attacks and with the backs, Ainsley, Sam and Penny, stepping up to the play and pressuring Bellarine’s forwards, it left our keeper little to do for some time. Long hits by Sam got the ball out of the danger area. Running to space and great passing in the forward line by Elese, Nicole, Phoebe and Jess often saw the play in the circle and Newtown scored the first goal. Bellarine bounced back and began to gain some control of the game and a quick run saw them even the score. Determination and effort from all, with Bec C and Jacquie working hard saw the play move quickly from end to end. A further goal to each team and the score was locked at 2-2, and extra time looked likely. But the work ethic continued and Falcons were able to score the winnng goal with less than 1 minute to play. A great result for great effort – on to the Preliminary Final next week!

2016 Hockey Season – August 20 & 21

2016 Hockey Season – August 20 & 21

What a great hockey season this has been so far, and the last round of home and away games brought great excitement for our younger players in particular. With 2 Premierships claimed, end of year presentations happening for the lower junior players, and 9 teams progressing to the Semi-Finals next week,  it was a fantastic weekend all round.

As this round was also designated RESPECT round by Hockey Geelong, there were some wonderful examples of fair play and sportsmanship, and some great messages written on the RESPECT WALL.

Congratulations to our players who received the Fair Play awards during the weekend, and will now be sporting a pair of rainbow socks. Well done Jack, Riley, Hailey.

2 Premierships in Under 11

The Newtown Rebels team claimed the Under 11 North Premiership in emphatic fashion in the inaugural year of the competition. The team finished the hockey season undefeated, with 14 wins, 1 draw and a goal difference of +77.  What an amazing performance, with 3 first-year players in the team, and little previous experience playing on synthetic surface fields. Who says you can’t learn good hockey skills playing on grass? Who says girls get neglected and ignored in mixed teams? The team is to be commended for the sportsmanship and respectful attitude they have shown to all teams in this competition. As the season began with low player numbers for some of the opposition teams, Newtown Rebels happily loaned players to the opposition team to ensure a fair go for all players.

A fantastic hockey season

A fantastic hockey season for Newtown Rebels – Under 11 North Premiers

Newtown Spirit also claimed a Premiership with an impressive season in the Under 11 South competition – 12 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses and a goal difference of +51. The final match of the season was an exciting one, against the Runners Up, Kardinia. A great effort by all players, with excellent efforts by the 3 first-year players and 2 Under 8 players who stepped up to help out.

We look forward to the Exhibition Match which will be played on Grand Final Day, September 10, between the Premiers of the two Under 11 competitions – Newtown Rebels vs Newtown Spirit. What a match it will be!

Kookas Midweek

More wet weather this week so we took to the verandah again to play some fun hockey in relative dryness. Matilda joined us and showed that skill and determination has very little to do with size. Great skills and great teamwork by Matilda with Jai and Ella always in good position to receive the ball and pass it to advantage. Sam, Sam and Amy got their team off to a flying start with some lovely goals as a result of long passes and players running on. The gap between the scores narrowed in the second half with some nice rebounds by Jai and Matilda but couldn’t overcome the strong opposition and the silky ball skills of Sam, Sam and Amy.

Under 8

Newtown Spirit v Torquay Tornadoes

Newtown Spirit put in a convincing display of skill, teamwork and enthusiasm against Torquay Tornadoes to sign off its 2016 winter campaign at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday. The Under 8 team has steadily developed over the past months and wasted little time in its final game to spring into attack. Within minutes Nate had goaled, Ruben showed some great ball control and the accurate passes between Spirit players kept them in attack and pressuring the Torquay defence. Half backs Lucy and Meyah and centre forward Charlotte combined well to kick start several forward runs, with Spirit players including Avah and Max peppering the goals in a confident first half. At half time Coach Kellie praised her charges for showing great vision, saying they were passing the ball between themselves to get around their opposition, keeping to their positions and passing out wide. She encouraged them to keep their sticks down low to the ground and set them a target of at least four touches before shooting for goal. “Keep it up guys, I like it,’’ she said.

And so did the Spirit spectators watching on the sidelines as the team headed out for the second half with their customary determination. But Torquay put up a good fight, putting more pressure on Spirit’s defence with fast breaks and shots on goal. But that didn’t stop Spirit from launching its own forward forays with some great linked play between Nate, Ruben, Charlotte, Lucy, Max and Meyah. Avah worked hard in full back, directing the ball to her half backs so they could run it into attack once again. Kellie applauded the team’s efforts at the game’s end, highlighting Spirit’s impressive team work and positioning throughout the entire match. Max and Ruben received Best Team Player awards for the final game for their strong efforts.

Thanks should go to Pollyanna for volunteering to play for Torquay on Saturday. She did some good stops and tackles and has clearly improved in her time filling in for Newtown’s Under-8 teams. Spirit’s game on Saturday was a fitting end to the 2016 season. Well done Spirit players for your great attitude and effort, thanks to Kellie for coaching and umpiring so well and a round of applause to the parents for supporting the team during the competition.

Newtown Rebels vs College White

The last game of the season saw the Rebels take on College White.  The whole team came together brilliantly showcasing all of the skills and tactics they have learnt throughout the year.  Each player stuck to their positions and roles enabling clean passing, and creating few opportunities for the opposition to score. Some very impressive passages of play between players resulted in many successful attempts at goal. A special high five for Hannah who scored her first goal….Super effort Hannah! Surry, Scarlett and Georgie received Best Team Player awards – well done!  On behalf of the coaching and management team, well done to all for great season of Hockey!!!!  We look forward to seeing you all in the Summer season.

Newtown Raiders vs Newtown Strikers

A lovely game by Raiders to finish off a very enjoyable hockey season. Great hockey skills, game strategies and teamwork were on display with all players contributing to the team performance. Cate and Eliza worked well together to take the ball into attack, with fast dribbling skills, and with Isabel making great interceptions and quick free passes, Raiders looked to put pressure on the Strikers’ defence.  Eamonn was in great position in front of goals, stopping many of Strikers attempts to score and deflecting other attacks. Oscar, Charlotte and Jesse found some great position and made some nice passes. Great concentration by the team this week saw Raiders mark their players and gain possession to send the ball into attack. Best Team Player award to Eamonn.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Raiders

Thank you to all Strikers players and parents for a fantastic year. Thank you to Alex S for cheering on the team from the sidelines and we look forward to seeing you back playing next year.

Amy and Ruby paired up early in the game to assist in attacking the goals. Alex J has been working throughout the season with her ball control and turning. Eliza was unstoppable throughout the mid field and put into practice everything that we have worked on for the year. Emma was fantastic on the wing with her passing along the side lines and Isla never stopped tackling. Amelia played in goals again and was proving hard to get the ball past. During the second half she joined the rest of the team on the field and assisted Ruby with another goal.  Eliza was awarded Best Team Player.

We are so proud of you all for your sportsmanship throughout the season and willingness to play for the opposition. Thank you for a wonderful season and your dedication. We hope to see you for Summer hockey with most of the team moving onto Under 11s for next season.

Under 11 North

Newtown Rebels vs Bellarine Thunder 4-0

Newtown Rebels played Bellarine Thunder at Stead Park on Saturday in their round 15 and final match of the season. Rebels continued their good form from last week and had the majority of the play all game. We had a number of short corners and troubled the Bellarine defenders who did really well under so much attack from Newtown. The final score was Newtown 4-0, with one goal each to Basyl, Kiah, Olivia and Patrick.

U11 Rebels great hockey season

Newtown Rebels vs Bellarine Thunder

Season Summary:

Basyl runs all over the pitch from deep in defence right up to the circle, he’s been great at stealing the ball from the opposition and taking it right up to the scoring zone. Brandon’s stick skills while dribbling on the run are great to see and his ability to find good passing options has been outstanding in the latter part of this season. Charlotte and Genevieve are getting a lot more of the ball in the second half of the season and this will continue next season as they gain more confidence in their game play and strength in their hits. Grace is fearless in defence and very few balls get past her, but she also had some time in attack. Earlier in the season, she scored 2 goals, and she’ll be a very versatile player for her team next year. Imogen has played some great games this season where she has been able to get quite a few hits in. She scored a goal in Round 8 which was fantastic to see.

Kiah has been a great scorer for the team all season. She makes good position near goals each game and was the leading goalscorer with Patrick, both on 17 goals. Luca spent a lot of time in defence for us, he reads the play well and runs fast to get to the ball and defend. His jinks past attackers in the latter part of the season were great, and he was also a very handy attacker, scoring 5 goals during the season. Olivia has set a great example for the rest of the team. She defends opposition attacks through the centre really well, comes back into defence when needed and is also really dangerous in attack where she made goals from short corners her speciality late in the season. Patrick is one of our first-year players and surprised everyone with his brilliant goal-scoring ability in Round 2, and continued that through the season to finish with 17 goals. His strong hits will be sure to hit many more goals next season. Sam’s stick skills are very good and he loves moving the ball from left to right as he dribbles the ball past opponents. Keep up the good work and don’t forget to look for a pass earlier! Teijai is another of our first-year players and he’s been really handy in attack, scoring 9 goals for the season including a ripper in Round 7 just before the final siren that the team loved as it gave them a close-fought win.

The enthusiasm of the whole team and their improvement during the season has been really great to see. Coach AJ and Team Manager Zen congratulate the team on a fantastic unbeaten season and we look forward to following all of our players’ progress in future seasons with Newtown City Hockey Club. Thanks also to the parents and supporters of our players who helped us run the games smoothly, and who gave the players so much encouragement at every game.

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains 0-6

Enthusiasm, commitment and attention to coaching advice given came together in the last game of the hockey season for Strikers, with some excellent examples of teamwork and use of space out wide. Solid defence by Jack, Nathan and some really good approaches to the ball by Michael in goals saw Newtown get the ball out of trouble in defence. Great passing to team mates in good position ahead of the ball by Lachlan, Declan and Owen allowed Zoe, Alex, Grace and Gil to create some attacks and some narrowly missed opportunities in front of goal. It even looked like Chris was going to score another goal this week by being in the right spot at the right time, but it didn’t quite work out. The strategy of playing the ball wide worked really well, and the team looked great when this strategy was used. Unfortunately there was a lot of play down the middle and lack of marking the opposition allowed Golden Plains plenty of opportunities to set up goals, which they happily took advantage of. Best Team Player awards to Zoe and Declan. Thanks to all the players, team manager Morven and parents for their enthusiasm and effort during this season, and we can look forward to some great games in 2017 from these players.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia 2-1

It was hard to imagine it was the final game of what has been a brilliant season for the Spirit team. We were up against Kardinia who came out with a very determined attitude. We were a little caught off guard to say the least! The team panicked a little and once again tended to follow the ball instead of holding their positions.  Matilda was in goals this week and made a brilliant save to deny Kardinia what would have been a great goal. However the second time the ball was in the goal circle it unfortunately hit the back board. Well done Matilda on a great game.

The second half saw Spirit calm down and hold their positions. Kellie was most relieved. There were some great passages of play and Liam was very strong in the middle making determined tackles and following through. We had 2 on the bench this week so there are lots of changes. The kids did really well adapting to their different positions when Kellie moved them. With some great passes through the half backs and up to the forwards, Spirit were able to convert 3 goals which had us finish 2 games clear at the top of the ladder!

Well done to the entire team. You have been a joy to work with this year and you should all be very proud of yourselves.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia 8-0

This week was RESPECT week and it was fantastic to see so many players acknowledging and asking questions about what the day was all about.  This week U13 Spirit played Kardinia and at one point in the game a Kardinia player was hit very hard in the foot by the ball, the player fell to the ground holding their foot and I was incredibly impressed by how many of our players gathered around the player to make sure they were OK.  That is exactly what RESPECT day is all about. Showing great sportsmanship, caring for fellow players regardless of who they are, where they come from, how old or young, tall or small, dark skin or white skin or whether they are right or wrong.  So well done team on showing great sportsmanship and remember Respect day isn’t just a one off day we need to demonstrate these values every day.  A big congratulations to Riley who won the coloured socks, he played a great game and certainly demonstrated the values of the day.  Look forward to seeing the socks at training Riley!!

The Spirit played a great game of hockey with again some fantastic team work. Players were looking for others who were free with lots of great talking.  We worked well at taking the ball wide and then crossing into the circle to create lots of scoring opportunities and this was evident with both Nick and Claudia scoring their very first goals in Hockey.  Awesome!!

Well done team on another great game and let’s keep up the great team play leading into the first final this Saturday.  It should be a fun game against the Strikers!!

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 3-1

On Saturday the Strikers met Torquay in the final home and away game of the season. Special thanks to Ely, Max and to Sam S for filling in. In a tough first half the Strikers had a number of opportunities but could not penetrate the Torquay defence until late through Miles and then Harry on the cusp of half time.  In the first half Harry, Sam R and Miles were all solid contributors along with Kade and Harrison.

Down to 9 players for the second half the question was whether the Strikers could hold on against a determined Torquay team.  There was some great play in the second half from Angus R in defence who was fantastic, Olivia, Ella and Sam S and Jonah.  Miles ran all day up and down the pitch.   The Strikers held on for a commendable win in the circumstances 3-1.

Newtown Strikers vs Bellarine Storm 5-2

What an action packed game for the week that was Bellarine Storm. It was a convincing win that saw the team bag five goals against Bellarine Storm. It was a highly contested match that saw Newtown giving the game their all in, at times extremely difficult circumstances, and clearly showing they were the better team – on a number of levels. Starting on the pitch without a full compliment of players created a gap in the backline with Eneko padded up to be our last line of resistance. Bellarine managed to score early despite tight opposition. Thanks must go to Max (U13) who had remained kitted up as goalie and resting between games he graciously helped us out at half time coming in as goalie, giving us a full team who played an awesome running game and ‘owned’ the play driving it to the win that was. Our sticks were on the ground and we ran with and pressured the opposition fairly at every turn. Everyone put in such solid effort that they are all to be highly commended. Particular mention must go to Hailey who was singled out by the Geelong Hockey Association to be Awarded Player of the Day in the Respect Round – valuing fair and decent play. Congratulations all and be proud of finishing second on the ladder. Well deserved and all the best for the finals rounds.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia 9-0

Last match of the 2016 home and away season, and Spirit were pretty well manned today – only a couple out, leaving us in a better position than Kardinia. Off to a good start, with positive attack even with the resettling of players, that comes with a variety of ins and outs each week! Monique working hard, running to position herself both in best position to receive the ball and on the post when required. Monique’s efforts paid off with 2 post goals scored within the first half. Great to see Monique’s attention to this role and good lesson for all players. Some frustrations coming for Spirit, when they resorted to leading down the centre of the ground, allowing congestion and therefore difficulties with elimination to result. Beautiful work from Dan to refocus back to using the width of the pitch and passing purposefully up the ground, allowed further opportunity to score. Jonah also scored in the first half to take the lead to 3:0 at halftime.

Second half more effectively attacking though not without some niggles between team players. Scoring opportunities giving goals to Matt, Alex, Dan and Gus in the second half.  Overall team effort with lovely pressure from wings and insides, and as always very solid defence from Tom. Into finals now Spirit – well deserved.

Newtown Strikers – Bye

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Saints 7-5

Newtown Strikers vs Geelong 4-1

With the Torquay Tornadoes going down to their other Division 1 side, the Strikers 4th spot on the ladder was confirmed regardless of the result of the Geelong match.  That being said, we saw the game as being a great chance to get into form before the finals. Having a full bench meant that we were able to run hard for the majority of the game, unfortunately there were a few injuries which hopefully will come right by next weekend. Although we ended up winning the game 4 goals to 1 it wasn’t our best performance but on the plus side it acted as a reminder of the type of hockey that we will have to bring next week vs Saints.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 2-2

A great game by Falcons who had the majority of the play and lead for much of the game. Great defence by Penny, Deb, Bec W and Elese who teamed well with great attack moves by Nicole, Bec C, Jess and Tiahna. Torquay managed to sneak a goal in to force a draw in the last few minutes of the game.

Newtown Strikers vs Geelong 0-14

Strikers last game of the season was not how we wanted to finish. Geelong came out fighting to prove they were number one, and did very well. Although the score reflected a one sided game, Strikers held their heads high and persisted till the final whistle went. It was a wonderful effort by our mids and forwards to try and penetrate the Geelong defence. Our defenders did a fantastic job stopping a number of goals as well. Well done to the Strikers for your great sportsmanship.

Division 2 Men

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 1-1

Spurred on by Coach Don’s mid week text a healthy squad turned up to see if Spirit could get a win and then Bellarine lose and then the mathematical equalisation bye equation would work and then finals would come our way. Yep Don may have had too many spirits as he texted us all but hey he is a half glass full sort of guy.

Well we had a go. Fitzy and Stu and Brodie were fighting over each other to keep out Torquay forwards. Craig with his beard trimmed and Ian with his beard used all their experience wisely. Young guns Alex, Hudson and Tom Mac fired up. Woodsy and AJ played well out wide but forgot to change sides after half time. Sharpshooter Tom P scored the equaliser. Niko almost got a deflection from a late penalty corner to nearly achieve the dream. Richard and David C moved well in the midfield. Luke stuck to his task of manning up on anyone that Don didn’t want to.
Where was our own Gordo?

A spirited effort by all. A gutsy end to the season. Thanks to Don and Gordo and Craig for leading us this year.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Rebels vs Geelong 0-3

The final game for the season for the Rebels and the girls stepped up and played well against the current ladder leaders. Solid defence from Ros and Hill with great sweeps and sharp calls from Eichelle ensured that Geelong’s attacks were shut down. Mid-field, Colleen, Jacinta and Pam played well and were well supported by Kellie and Katelyn in bringing play forward. Andy, Nicola and Sharon made some great moves into Geelong’s territory. Despite the score Rebels played well to finish off the season.

2017 will be ‘The Season’!
