Highlight of the week: persistence and practice are paying off for U14 Strikers with a great game against Corio White.

Newtown Strikers vs Saints 6-4
This week Strikers started strong: an early goal from Georgia, a great clearance from Will in the opposition’s D, and Harry putting plenty of pressure on his opponent. Whilst Saints were able to respond with their first goal, Ryder and Zach worked hard to keep the ball up our end. With a nice assist from Georgia, Zach added a goal to the scorecard, followed quickly by another from Ryder.
Continuing to impress deep in defense, Elspeth made some great saves in front of goal, and with plenty of help from Will and Lily the ball was soon back up our end. Just before the half time break Austin added our fourth goal to the board – the fourth scorer for the half, and a great indicator of just how well the Strikers were playing as a team!
After some well deserved oranges at half time, the second half started much like the first with an early Strikers goal (Ryder) and a quick goal in response from Saints. Zach and Harry continued to pile on the pressure with their tackling skills, and after missing on the first attempt, Ryder’s second attempt bagged his third goal for the game.
Saints had some luck late in the half scoring two consecutive goals to take the score to 6-4 (in our favour), but it wasn’t long before Austin swung the momentum back around with a lovely pass to Lily who added another goal to her season’s tally. After a couple of Saints short corners (the second quickly cleared by Georgia), Lily finished the game with our final goal, sealing the win for the team – 8-4.
Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 9-2
Newtown Spirit put together a commanding performance in Round 6 against Torquay, delivering their most complete game of the season with a 9–2 victory.
The match began with Torquay striking early to take the lead, but Spirit responded instantly. Miriam burst down the left-hand side with a powerful run, slotting home a confident finish just a minute after to level the scores. Torquay answered back quickly with another goal, momentarily halting Spirit’s momentum. After taking a few minutes to reset, Spirit began to build their rhythm. Albert’s run down the right wing with a hit-and-chase created real attacking pressure, while Nadia held firm in defence near Spirit’s goal. A key attacking move saw Albert and Charlie combine on the left to find Miriam, with long-range shot from the right-hand side.
The breakthrough came soon after when Charlie and Eliza combined on the right—after the ball hit a Torquay foot, Miriam pounced on the advantage and slammed home the goal. Charlie followed up with a goal of his own soon after, capping off an excellent build-up involving Toby’s strong defensive play on the right, a pass to Eliza, then back to Toby and through to Charlie for the finish. Miriam continued her influence on the game, intercepting a Torquay pass and unleashing a big hit that found the back of the net for her third goal. A short corner to Spirit led to another brilliant sequence—Albert shut down a Torquay clearance, fed the ball to Miriam, who passed to Eliza for a well-taken goal just before halftime.
Spirit carried their momentum into the second half. A strong central clearance set up Charlie for his third goal of the match. Torquay won a short corner, but Spirit defended it superbly, keeping their lead intact. Nadia then charged down the right side, feeding Charlie for a shot that resulted in another short corner. Miriam’s shot was blocked, but Eliza capitalised on the rebound with a clinical finish. The final stages showcased more passing and attacking combinations. A long run down the left from Miriam, with Nadia in support, set up Eliza for another goal. From the restart, Spirit quickly turned over possession and Eliza struck again, sealing her hat-trick and closing out the match.
This was a powerful team performance from Spirit, blending solid defence with sharp attacking combinations. Miriam, Charlie, and Eliza starred in front of goal, while Albert, Nadia, and Toby played pivotal supporting roles. The team’s continued cohesion and growth were on full display in this standout 9-2 win.

Newtown Rockets vs Newtown Dynamos 2-10
Rockets began the game well with Zita trying her skills defending the goal. Good positioning allowed her to clear the ball to team mates and Nora, Alex and Michaela were able to move the ball forward into attack. Our attack was a little one sided, mostly down the right and trying to get through the crowd but there were some great through passes to Michaela along the side line which were then followed into the circle. 2 goals scored by Michaela
The second half saw David swap to the defence role and block the approach line to the goal for Rockets, with a number of great saves and clearances out of danger. Florence created some good space on the right and Rockets were able to mount more co-ordinated forward play and give the Dynamos defence some work to do, unfortunately without a result on the scoreboard despite the determination of the Rockets players.
Thanks to Michaela and Florence for filling in for Rockets.
Newtown Dynamos vs Newtown Rockets 10-2
For Round 6 , Under 10 Juniors Lloyd Reserve this week we had the Dynamos Vs Rockets . This week we had a full crew and we were victorious at 10 v 2. To help even out the numbers, Michaela kindly helped the Rockets for first half and Florence helped out for the second half.
The start saw some evenly matched challenges from the opposition, Dynamos stepped up the gears with some fantastic teamwork – Flynn sharing the ball and passing to his team mates and Georgia flying in with great tackles. Florence showed determination and was getting right into the action . Sophie showed support on the wings and Mathilda was doing some speedy running. Michaela’s passion was useful for both teams this week. Rockets showed some great defense and gave a good fight.
The team really fired up with Flynn and Mathilda each getting 4 goals , Georgia and Michaela also getting one each. As the weeks progress, the team are building confidence and a real team mentality.
Thanks to Rockets for competing. Well done to both teams.

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 1-1
The match started with Torquay quickly moving the ball into their forward line but it didn’t stay there for long. Spirit took control and ran the ball down the pitch which resulted in a missed shot at goal and a two short corners. Torquay was strong in defence. The ball went back to Torquay’s forward line, a few short corners put goalkeeper Leon under pressure before a goal was disallowed on height, then another attempt resulted in a goal. The ball continued to go up and down the field with good passing and pressure from both teams.
At half time Torquay was ahead one goal to nil. Coaches reminded the players that when we get a penalty in our favour, attackers should leave it for the defence and push forward to accept the ball. This is something that the team did well in the second half.
We started the second half with the ball in our possession. Similar to the first half the ball went up and down the pitch many times.
Remembering back to round 1, in the second half Spirit tired resulting in six additional goals going Torquay’s way. Today, at the exact same time, team Spirit lifted. A series of brilliant passing between players resulted in a goal to Mitchell. The score was now 1-1.
There were only minutes left on the clock, and the ball immediately went back into Spirit’s forward line. Then the whistle marked the end of play. Although a draw on the scorecard, it was a huge win for Spirit!

Newtown Strikers vs Corio White 0-1
The Strikers marched off the field amidst the overwhelming applause of the spectators. The Strikers performed exceedingly well against a strong Corio White’s team that had players who play in the mens Division 1 and 2 teams.
What impressed me most about the Strikers was their sheer determination to challenge every ball and not give the opposition an easy run of the game. Our defence marshalled by Albie H, Lilly P, Lucas O, Emily S and Elizabeth C was solid. They were successful in keeping Corio out of our D most of the game.
The midfield was strong the whole game. The pressured Corio’s attackers and forced them to make errors. They fed the ball to our forwards and supported them in attack. Eliza B, Emily S, Elizabeth C, Jack F, Alex L and Eva H put on a solid show.
Mitchell B, Chelsea O, Jack P, Eliza B Harriet S made several great runs inside Corio’s defensive half and we managed a couple of short corners.
Overall, the Strikers played a good team game. The good news is that we still have lots of room for improvement and we are only mid-way through the season.

Newtown Strikers vs Corio White 1-15
This week the U16 Strikers were short two of our regular players, and despite having some very willing-and-able fill-in players from the U14s (Chelsea and Albie – thank you both!), Corio White proved too strong.
The final score was 15-1, with Parker finding the back of the net for the Strikers.

Newtown Falcons vs Geelong White 1-2
In another gutsy performance, both Newtown and Geelong had a number of scoring opportunities but unfortunately luck was on Geelong’s side on the day. Regardless, it was nice to farewell Audrey with a top quality game and as a group we’ve really appreciated her efforts the past few seasons (hopefully this won’t be the last we see of her). With a week off for the King’s birthday weekend, it will give the team a chance to rest and reset for the games to come.

Newtown Strikers vs Corio 3-3
Another come from behind draw against Corio! This shows the determination of all the players to do their best and never give up.
Corio scored twice in the first half with sneaky touches in the circle which bypassed the defence despite great efforts from Ricki, Tash and Kayla. Good movement in the forward line by Tilly, Lara and Kristy created some opportunities. Tash scored our first goal after a strategic push back to her on the short corner, allowing her to split the defenders on the line.
The second half saw Strikers increase the speed and pressure on the opposition with Hanna and Jess working hard to get the ball forward, resulting in a lovely goal from Hanna on the right side of the circle which found the left corner of the goal. Great defence by Hannah CC slowed the Corio forays down their right side and allowed Strikers to return the play to our advantage. A further goal to Tilly and the game was back to a draw. Great work by all.
This week the team celebrated Lily’s 25th game milestone – congratulations Lily!!
The Geelong Jags proved to be an equal match for the Strikers in the first half, with the ball (and players) moving up and down the field throughout half, but neither team having any luck on the scoreboard. Zach and Harry both had attempts on goal without luck, and Elspeth and Austin worked tirelessly to defend and keep Jags from scoring. Despite several short corners for both teams, it was 0-0 at half time.
At the half time break the team made the most of the oranges whilst listening closely to coach Ivy – and were quickly back out onto the pitch for a very different second half. Georgia started the action early with a good run into our D and passing to Harry who just missed a goal, but Georgia was soon on for a shot to score our first goal.
The Jags then came back with a short corner that we were able to defend off, but soon enough they found the net, leveling the scorecard 1-1.
Ryder and Harry both scored next, and then Ryder scored again – already it was 4-1!! And to celebrate the 25 game milestone in style, Lily showed some impressive skills running the ball through the midfield, making some great intercepts and eventually scoring some goals too.
Austin and Will worked hard in the middle to keep the ball up our end, and the constant teamwork shown by the Strikers resulted in another goal for Ryder. A last minute short corner for Newtown saw Lily score her third for the match, completing another win for the team: 8-1. Go Strikers!
Newtown Spirit vs Saints 1-2
Newtown Spirit continued their season in Round 5 with a spirited performance against the Saints side. The game began with an early goal to Saints, but Spirit quickly responded with pressure of their own. A well-earned short corner signalled Spirit’s attacking intent, and Charlie was instrumental early on with a key defensive clearance that set the tone at the back. Moments later, a brilliant team move saw Miriam send a precise pass to Eliza, supported by Nadia in the centre. Eliza calmly finished to score Spirit’s opening goal, capping off some excellent link-up play. Miriam’s long passes continued to find targets, including a powerful hit to Eliza that advanced play deep into Saints territory.
Defensively, Charlie and Miriam were rock solid, while Nadia and Eliza caused problems for the opposition with strong forward runs from the midfield and right-hand side. Despite the pressure, no further goals were added before halftime, with the score locked at 1–1.
In the second half, Toby delivered a strong clearance from the centre, helping Spirit absorb early Saints pressure. Charlie continued his excellent form in defence, but a quick attacking burst from Saints down the right resulted in their second goal. Spirit didn’t back down—two short corners saw near misses from both Nadia and Charlie, and a sharp shot on goal from Miriam was unfortunately ruled out due to a foul. Toby and Miriam stood strong in the final stages, with Miriam making several critical clearances under intense pressure from the Saints. Albert and Rupert played important supporting roles in the midfield across both halves, getting involved with several key touches and helping Spirit transition between defence and attack.
Though the final score was a 2–1 win to Saints, the match was a true team effort from Spirit, showcasing growth, resilience, and excellent passages of play. The team continues to gel well, with strong contributions across the field.

Newtown Dynamos vs Newtown Jets 8-1
For round 5, U10 Juniors at Lloyd Reserve we had the Dynamos Vs Jets. The score was 8 to 1.
Thanks to AJ (Sophie’s dad) who kindly stepped in as coach this week .
This week even with a few players short (winter time germs everywhere), the Dynamos had Michaela, Florence, Mathilda, Sophie and Abbie stepped in from another team to help make us a 5 people team.
The team worked really well with some good passing, with Florence and Michaela both setting up some really good goals.
Sophie showed some good receiving on the wing. Mathilda and Abbie doing some great central ground work. The tackling and action of the team saw them victorious this week. Thanks to the Jets for competing. Well done everyone
Newtown Rockets vs Newtown Rebels 4-0
Rockets continue to demonstrate good ball control skills and excellent passing to team mates. With the play more spread out each week, there are good opportunities to move the ball into attack and players are keen to follow up and keep the pressure on the opposition.
We welcomed Hadley for her first game of hockey and she showed some great tackling skills and good co-operation with team mates. Confident approaches to the ball by David and Alex allowed Rockets to gain possession and control the play. Thanks to Nora for filling in for the other game in the first half, with her strength in both defence and attack being valuable in the second half. Tully was again in the right place at the right time to score two goals. Well done team.

Newtown Strikers vs Geelong Roar 3-0
It was an exciting clash between Newtown Strikers and Geelong Roar, with both teams putting on a great display of skill and teamwork.
In the first half, Vicki impressed with plenty of running along the wing and held her position well. James opened the scoring for Newtown with a well-executed goal from a short corner. A strong run up forward by Felix, with Paddy in support, kept the pressure on Geelong.
The second half saw the game really open up as Newtown strengthened their positioning. There was some excellent passing play from James to Dot to Vicki, creating good attacking opportunities. Geelong had a few near chances, but Thomas’s solid defence and Henry’s outstanding goalkeeping kept them at bay.
Newtown continued to shine with great link-up passes from Mitch to James to Paddy, supported by Dot in attack. Paddy had a brilliant run forward, again with Dot backing him up. Henry was once again crucial in goal, and his excellent clearance set up a flowing move involving Edward, Vicki, and Dot that pushed Newtown deep into attack.
Felix was rewarded for his persistence up front with a goal, and James capped off a fantastic performance with a late goal, assisted by Dot.
A huge team effort from Newtown all around! Special thanks to Paddy and Mitch for stepping in before their own game at 10:15 – legends!
Newtown Spirit vs Geelong Thunderstrike 4-2
It was a big match for milestone players this week. Led onto the field by 50 gamer Paddy as captain, he quickly showed us his match experience by scoring the first goal. This was quickly followed by another goal from Oliver and yet another goal by Paddy. The ball went up and down the pitch many times, Thunderstrike were applying good pressure but Leon managed to fend off some attempts at goal.
At half time Spirit was 3-1 up. Players and coaches noted good passing and tackling. A quick chat from the umpire as a reminder to keep back a distance of five at penalties.
Thunderstrike scored a goal early in the second half and it was now back to a tight game. A goal by Lily (25 gamer) and team Spirit finished the match 4-2 up.
Two goals to Paddy, one each to Oliver and Lily. Congratulations to milestone players Paddy (50 games) and Lily (25 games).
Having played every team in the competition we now start again with Torquay. It will great to see how the team has grown together over the past month since last playing Torquay.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 0-1
Despite an improved team performance and numerous scoring opportunities, we fell just short in a tightly contested 1-0 defeat to Torquay.
From the first whistle, we applied pressure and created several clear chances in front of goal. Unfortunately, Torquay’s goalkeeper was in top form, pulling off a string of excellent saves to deny us time and again. Jack F, Eliza ,Alex L , Jack P, Alexandra, Mitchell all ran hard and linked up well to create these chances.
Defensively, we were solid throughout the match. Our defensive unit of Lucas, Albie, Eva, Lilly, Matt and Emily held firm, showing composure and resilience under pressure, and keeping Torquay’s attacking threats largely at bay apart from their lone goal.
There were plenty of positives to take away from the game. We saw noticeable improvement in our overall play, especially in our passing and tackling. The team moved the ball with greater confidence and linked up well through midfield, creating attacking momentum across both halves.
Although the result didn’t go our way, the performance showed real promise and laid a strong foundation to build on for the next game.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 4-7
This week the U16 Strikers were without goalkeeper Kayden, but despite this the team still put on a good show (and appreciated a little extra help for the second half!).
Parker continued to show his appetite for fast hockey and shooting at the goals, running at the ball and looking for a goal from the start. Despite some good defensive work early on from Jess and Cormac, Torquay were awarded an early penalty 1v1. Without Kayden, a fearless Liz donned the defender mask and showed the team how it’s done – defending off the Torquay striker’s attempt for goal. An amazing effort Liz!!
Throughout the first half the Strikers had a few opportunities on goal, with Parker and Ivy both shooting for the back of the net without luck. Cormac, Sidak and Liz fought hard in defense to push Torquay back but without Kayden’s saves, Torquay had the upper hand. At the end of half Torquay were up 7-0.
At the half time break a generous offer came from Torquay – their goalie Luke was keen to cover for Kayden (and show the Torquay strikers his skills too!). Luke was straight into the action, impressing everyone on field (and in the stands) with a save using his stick alone! A high ball in the air, on target to go in at the top of the net, and Luke was all over it – thanks Luke!
The Strikers went about the next half knowing that they now had the upper hand, and they made the most of it. Parker started the half much the same as the first, but this time he found the back of the net to put our first goal on the board.
From there, the goals started to flow for the Strikers. First it was Jess who ran in from well outside the D, past several Torquay players before scoring her first goal for the day. Then Jess nicely assisted Ivy to her first – great team play!
With the score at 7-3 towards the end of the game, Parker found a foot for a penalty 1v1 and was able to convert to a goal, ending the game 7-4 in Torquay’s favour. Torquay went goal-less in the second half – something positive for the team to take into next round.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 2-1
A much better game for Strikers this week, after the initial confusion when we realised that we only had 10 players on the field. Despite strong defence for Strikers from Zali and Ricki and Tash meeting the ball high, Torquay managed to slip into the goal circle to score 2 field goals. Torquay’s tendency to place both wings very deep in our defence area created some difficulties for our midfield players and led to space in attack for Torquay.
Great work by our forwards with Tilly, Ivy, Jess and Lara working well together. Great position and determination from Deidre, Kristy and Peta kept the ball moving forward and there were a number of ‘how did that miss’ moments in front of goal.
The second half saw Strikers rebound and continue to work hard to get the ball into attack. Stephanie at full back provided some attacking impetus and some important interceptions by Hanna blocked a number of Torquay attacks. Thoughtful moves to space in the forward line by Hanna also provided opportunities to move the ball sideways to space and spearheaded further shots at goal. Tilly continued her great form and was the successful goal scorer although there were lots more attempts. Torquay did not manage to earn any attacking short corners for the whole game but the first half scores were important in the end. Well done all.
There were no U14 and U16 games this week due to the Victorian Junior Country Championships in Melbourne. It was a very successful weekend for the Hockey Geelong teams with 2 Gold medals and 3 Silver medals. Congratulations to the 29 Newtown members who were involved in the 6 Hockey Geelong teams as players, coaches and team managers.

Newtown Strikers vs Corio4-3
On a cold and damp morning at Stead Park, Newtown Strikers were soon heating up the hockey field against Corio. The game was characterised by some great teamwork and passing, with fantastic link up play between players.
It wasn’t long before Strikers hit the lead. A short corner from Zach made its way to Ryder who took it into the D to set up Lily for a cool finish.
The cool and collected passing continued, Strikers having the larger share of possession. Soon there was a second goal for the Strikers made with a little controversy. Left winger Zach played the ball to Harry who, carrying the ball into the D, found himself at an acute angle to the goal. Despite the difficult angle Harry took the shot and it appeared to be going in only for his sister Lily to “steal” the goal on the line. Needless to say Harry wasn’t too impressed with his sibling.
In defence Ryder was solid at the back making crucial interceptions and Elspeth continued her superb form in goal with some fine saves on the line and coolly clearing the ball to the side.
A goal either side of half time for Corio meant the scores were level at 2-2, however it wasn’t long before the Strikers took the lead again with the team goal of the day. Great play through middle of the park saw Harry pass it off to Will who moved it on to Zach. He provided the through ball for Lily to run on to it in the D and complete her hat-trick.
Some positional changes for Strikers gave players a chance to shine in a variety of roles. Will made some great runs and passes down the right wing and both Austin and Ryder went close with fantastic attempts at goal. Austin making a strong pass to Ryder who set up Zach to apply the finish for a fourth goal.
Some excellent variety in our short corners allowed Strikers to keep the pressure on Corio but it was Corio who scored the next goal.
Excellent team defending and marking of the Corio players kept the opposition away from our goal and despite some near misses for us there were no more goals, giving the Strikers a 4-3 win in a very enjoyable game to watch.
Newtown Spirit vs Geelong Jaguars 3-6
In their fourth outing of the season, Newtown Spirit took on the Geelong Jaguars in a tightly contested match played on a cold morning—with the rain thankfully holding off.
Spirit started strongly with an early short corner, as Charlie fired a close shot on goal. Rupert was solid in the middle, clearing the danger confidently. The early pressure paid off with Charlie finding the back of the net for Spirit’s first goal. Miriam anchored the defence with great effort, and moments later followed up a crucial clearance with more strong defending, setting up another opportunity for Charlie to add a second goal.
Eliza came close soon after with a well-taken shot that narrowly missed, while Albert stood firm in the centre of defence, halting several Jaguar advances. Spirit went into the break with a narrow 2–1 lead after a strong first-half showing.
The second half began with a burst of momentum from Geelong, who scored four quick goals in succession. Despite the setback, Spirit responded with renewed determination. The combination on the right-hand side between Eliza, Charlie, and Miriam resulted in another chance on goal—just missing, but reigniting the team’s energy.
Miriam continued to shine in defence, making a crucial clearance to the left while under pressure. Though Geelong added another goal, Spirit found a late reply as Eliza finished off a long run following a sharp centre pass from Miriam.
The final score was a 6–3 win to the Jaguars, but the match felt much closer on the field, with Spirit’s teamwork, strong defence, and attacking consistency standing out.

Dynamos vs Newtown Rebels 19-1
For round 3, U10s at Lloyd reserve, the Dynamos had a strong result of 19-1 against Rebels. The team played with only 4 players this week.
Mathilda got her debut goal (and a tidy 6 others),with some fantastic team work with Flynn setting up many of those goals and he got an impressive 5 goals also.
Michaela was showing some fantastic determination and grit in attack and also picking up a great 4 goals. Florence showed some speed and agility around the pitch and an amazing 3 goals.
The team really showed development in their team work, passing and working together. Rebels showed resilience in a tough match and thanks to them for playing.
Great game both teams, hope everyone had fun.
Newtown Rockets vs Newtown Jets 1-2
Thanks to Sonny and Leila for filling in for Rockets. This was a great game with some excellent ball control and teamwork from both teams. Strong passes from defence allowed Rockets to move the ball out of danger, with David in great position to block the approach to goal by Jets players. Good running by Alex to move the ball into attack but a tendency to crowd the play made it difficult to move with freedom. Tully was in the right position in space to score the goal for Rockets. Rockets are improving their marking of opposition players each week leading to this tightly contested game.

Newtown Strikers vs Corio 1-0
Newtown Spirit vs Geelong Roar 6-1
Still on a high from their first win of the season, team Spirit took to the pitch with a spring in their step. PR generously gave his time to coach them this week as Grace and Charlotte were representing Geelong at JCC.
We started the match two players short as Austin and Ryder were still on the U10 pitch as fill-ins. Without a chance to catch their breath or take a sip of water, they sprinted from pitch 2 straight onto pitch 1. They quickly joined their team mates who had been holding play despite being outnumbered.
For the most part, the game was controlled by team Spirit. Our attacking and midfield were very active all game while our defence only briefly saw the ball. There were many attempts at goal that either just narrowly missed the goal or were stopped by Roar’s goal keeper.
From the sideline PR didn’t need to do much coaching, they played very well as a team. When he did need to coach he reminded them to face the ball and go wide rather than down the middle. Overall, it was a brilliant team effort that translated to a 6-1 win on the scoresheet.
Two goals each to Elwood and Mitchell, and one goal each to Caspar and Hugo. Leon defended our goals.
Congratulations team Spirit on a great win.
Division 1 Women
Newtown Falcons vs Geelong 1-0
Well it was only a matter of time before the hard work that everyone in the team has been putting in since the start of the season paid off, which made the 1 – 0 victory on the weekend ever so sweet.
With a number of players unavailable due to the JCC weekend, we were incredibly lucky to have Ali and Em fill in and Zali double up for us. The game itself was evenly matched with both sides having a number of attacking plays, but it wasn’t until late in the game that Ali was able to find the back of the net.
What has been a stand-out this season is the level of pressure that the team has been able to apply to the opposition, resulting in unforced errors which we’ve then been able to take advantage of. Gutsy efforts from the whole team, particularly Kim who took a decent hit to the body, came off for a few minutes and then got back out onto the field. With Rach away, props to Georgie who jumped in goals and made a number of saves and to everyone else on the field that ground the game out to the very end.
We’ve got a well earned bye this coming week, so looking forward to seeing who else we can knock off this season.

Newtown Falcons vs Geelong White 2-3
Division 2 Women
Newtown Strikers vs Torquay Tornadoes 0-9
After 3 great games to start the season, we were back to earth with a thud this week.
We had some great play along the side-lines from Zali, Kristy and Lara to move forward into the attack zone. However, a lack of connection between our forwards and midfield meant we couldn’t capitalise on this progress.
Torquay were able to move out of their defence zone with relative ease, always finding a free player and quickly putting pressure on our defence. Despite great work from Zali and Rickie, Torquay managed to get into the circle on numerous occasions. Torquay’s young players had plenty of speed and pounced on any loose traps and soft clearances to constantly put pressure on the defence. There were plenty of shots at goal but many successful shots came from close play right in front of goal.
In the first of two Newtown City Hockey Club derbies for the round, the Strikers took on Newtown Spirit on a very sunny morning at Stead Park.
Spirit had an early short corner, but our defenders were quick out of the net to prevent a goal. The Strikers then took control of the ball, with Harry scoring the first goal for the morning.
Despite some great tackling skills from Georgia, Spirit were able to draw another short corner. Austin was too good in defense though, clearing the ball nicely over the sideline.
Led by coach Ivy, the Strikers then had an excellent period of play for the remainder of the half. A goal from Lily followed by a great shot from her brother Harry that only just missed, and then we saw Lily in the action again for an excellent intercept that stopped the Spirit who were on a big run down the pitch.
Just before half time Georgia added another goal to the board, and Will again showed his good intercepting skills in the middle to get the ball back up our end. Zach and Ryder both attempted shots in the last minute, but it was Lily who scored our 4th goal right before the half time whistle.
Spirit returned for the second half determined to turn things around, which made for some great contests! We had four short corners early in the half for both teams, and they were all goal-less as both teams were determined not to let anything through.
It wasn’t long though before Harry, Georgia and Lily came together for some great team work in the forward half. Harry scored first, whilst a really good shot on goal from Lily just missed. Georgia scored a great goal next, and then Ryder made the most of a short corner to add himself to the score card.
Soon after Newtown Spirit started to find some opportunities against us. First Eliza found her way to goal, and despite our excellent defensive efforts in short efforts, Charlie from Spirit was able to score too.
Whilst the Strikers were still ahead by 5, for the remainder of the half Spirit had a lot of the ball, and the Strikers had to work really hard to keep them out of their goal. Austin kept strong in defense though, clearing the ball out of their D when it was in there, and stopping the ball in half back to keep it out of there too.
A game for the ages, Newtown Strikers came out on top 7-2.
Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 2-7
In their third match of the season, Newtown Spirit faced off against Strikers in a fast-paced, all-Newtown clash full of strong individual efforts and teamwork.
Strikers opened with a short corner goal, but Spirit responded with intensity. Eliza made a strong early run down the left wing, while Rupert stood out defensively on the right, consistently clearing under pressure. Albert was also solid in defence on the left-hand side, helping to hold off repeated attacks. Strikers added a second goal, despite Spirit’s build-up play, including a smart pass from Toby to Eliza using the boards through the middle. Toby also held strong in defence.
Two quick Strikers goals followed, though Spirit nearly hit back through Eliza just before halftime, trailing 4–0 at the break.
Early in the second half, Strikers nearly converted a short corner and soon after, Miriam made a key clearance to the left. Strikers added another goal from a tight passage, but Rupert’s repeated follow-ups and tackles helped limit the damage. Two more Strikers goals followed, one from a short corner.
Spirit responded with renewed energy—Nadia broke down the right, linking with Charlie and Eliza through the middle, leading to a deserved goal by Eliza. Another strong run from Nadia set up a short corner, where Eliza passed to Charlie for a composed finish. Spirit held firm in the final minutes with great efforts from Charlie, Nadia, and a strong chase from Toby.
Though the final score was 7–2 to Strikers, Spirit’s determination and teamwork were evident throughout an exciting match.

Newtown Dynamos vs Newtown Rockets 6-2
With a few players missing, there was plenty of space to run and pass. Excellent approach to the ball from David, Alex, Nora and Tully allowed Rockets to gain possession many times. However Flynn, Georgia and Florence for Dynamos did not make things easy, chasing every ball and running into space and into the scoring zone.
The second half saw Rockets take the attack to Dynamos with Nora grabbing the ball and taking the opportunity to run on and into the circle to score two goals. Thanks to Tully for swapping to Dynamos when Florence had to leave the field. Hope she is feeling better this week.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 2-3
A very tightly contested affair between the two Newtown teams!
First half saw Joe marshalling our troops in defence, with some truly excellent clearances, ably assisted by Vicky who always positioned herself perfectly. Harry and Isla held their positions strongly out wide on the wing to provide some great options out of defence. A series of strong clearances by Edward culminated in a great run up forward by James, with Dot and Harry running hard in support to their respective posts and finally, an unlucky miss! Spirit scored late in the first half.
We again withstood a lot of pressure in defence in the second half. Vicki, Dot and Henry all combined effectively, and Fraser made a number of magnificent saves in goals. Some great forward pressure by James and Harry, and a fantastic individual effort by James, resulted in two goals and very nearly a third! Huge efforts by Edward in defence kept Spirit to just one goal for the half, until the dying minutes when a lucky turnover resulted in a third and final goal for Spirit. Final score 3-2 to Spirit in what was a highly entertaining match!
Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 3-2
It was time for the Newtown derby!!
The first half was very tight with contributions from all team Spirit players. The ball went up and down the pitch many times. Spirit were passing well, communicating with each other, creating space and applying pressure.
In the final minutes of the first half team Spirit had the ball very close to their goals and spectators collectively held their breath…… Paddy struck the ball beautifully and scored the first goal for the season! It was the boost team Spirit needed.
Team Spirit went into half time with not only their first goal this season but a new found sense of belief, with one player noting it was the first time they’ve ever been ahead in a game. The discussion at half time included maintaining energy, something team Spirit have lacked so far this season.
The second half was equally close with two goals to each team but at the final whistle it was team Spirit by one goal.
Goals to Paddy, Caspar and Mitchell. Leon defended well as goalie. But what the scorecard doesn’t show is that the game was won through teamwork. Congratulations team Spirit on your first win for the season.

Newtown Strikers vs Corio White1-7 Newtown Strikers recorded their first goal this season. The goal came via a penalty corner courtesy of a direct hit by Chelsea O in the second half of the game.
Our players put on a good team effort and had more opportunities in this game compared to the previous games. Mitchell, Sidak, Alexandra and Chelsea worked hard in attack and caused problems to our opponents. Even Jack P, who is new to hockey and first time playing in the front line, worked hard to put pressure on Corio’s defense.
Our defense of Lucas O, Alex L, Eva, Emily, Lilly, Eliza, Elizabeth and Jack F did well in minimizing the attack from Corio. Unfortunately, we made several mistakes which Corio capitalised on. Albie put on a good show in goals and made several saves. His performance has improved with each game and he has the potential of improving further.
Next week we do not have a game due to Junior Country Competition but training will use the opportunity to conduct a training on the Saturday.

Newtown Strikers vs Corio White 3-9 Q1: 1–3 | Q2: 1–3 | Q3: 0–0 | Q4: 1–3
Despite a 9–3 defeat to a dominant Corio White side, the Newtown Strikers displayed impressive resilience and teamwork throughout Round 3 of the U16 competition.
First Quarter: The Strikers made a solid start, with Jess scoring an early goal following a well-executed team move. Parker and Kayden worked tirelessly in defense and transition, but Corio quickly responded with three goals to take the lead by the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter: Corio extended their advantage with another three goals, including a solo run and a successful 1v1 penalty. Cormac and Liz, fought to regain control in defense, while Ivy and Jess pushed forward in attack. Kayden’s goalkeeping was exceptional, making a series of crucial saves to keep the team in the game.
Third Quarter: Newtown showed improvement defensively, managing to keep Corio scoreless in this period. Cormac, Liz, and Sidak played key roles in shutting down Corio’s attacks, and Jess earned a short corner following a strong run. Parker nearly found the back of the net with a shot just wide. Kayden continued to make key saves, proving a constant presence in goal.
Fourth Quarter: Corio added three more goals, including one from a 1v1 penalty, but Newtown remained determined. Ivy scored a well-taken goal in a 1v1 penalty, and Parker capped off a strong performance with his own goal. Sidak was active, applying pressure and supporting both the attack and defense.
A huge thank you to Sidak and Liz from the U14s for stepping in and making valuable contributions. Sidak was especially impressive with his energy, skill, and impact on both ends of the field, while Liz was vital in controlling the midfield and supporting the defense.
Overall, while the Strikers faced a tough opponent, they displayed great determination and continued to improve throughout the match. The team will look to build on these positive performances in upcoming games.
Keep it up, Strikers!

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 0-2
Continuing the string of games played in hot conditions for this time of the year, we were treated to a fantastic game of hockey. The first time we came up against Torquay this season, we were able to keep them goalless in the first half before they ran away in the second half due to us having a limited bench and fatigue setting in.
In this second game, we had a full bench and it made a huge improvement allowing our midfield and forwards to maintain pressure throughout the game. Across the field, there were no weak links and we were able to produce some impressive scoring opportunities but were unfortunately unable to score.
While the end result of the game was a loss, it was another reminder of the potential of the team and how far we’ve come since the start of the season (which was only a few weeks ago). Looking forward to the next time we come up against Torquay.

Newtown Strikers vs Corio 3-3
Another great game from Strikers this week. We anticipated a hard game against the ladder leaders who have some strong key players. Strikers began well with plenty of play in the forward zone, with Audrey controlling the midfield and placing the ball precisely into space for team mates to collect. Great running and position from Lara, Kim, Jess, Chelsea and Hanna with Tilly showing her control to bypass opponents and head into the circle.
Goals to Kristy and Peta saw us go 2-0 up with Corio not being able to make much headway in their attacking zone. Great defence by Benno, Zali and Paige was well backed up by Kirsty and Kayla. But Corio kept coming and managed to score with some fast paced attacks and a strong hit, making the score 2-3.
With 4 on the interchange bench, our defence and forward players were able to keep up the pace and swap positions as needed. This allowed Strikers to keep pushing right until the end, and it was Lara who again plucked a ball out of the air to score the equaliser with 1/2 minute to go! Woohoo! This fantastic result sees us sitting in 2nd position on the ladder to Corio, with the same points and only 1 goal difference. Well done to all, and congratulations to Jess and Chelsea on their first senior games.
