2016 Hockey Season July 9 & 10

With the hockey season having a break for the junior competition, this weekend only featured senior matches. Our changeable weather made things difficult for the men’s teams playing on Sunday, but there were some great efforts and lots of hard work. With 6 weeks to go before the end of the home and away hockey season and the commencement of finals, our teams are working hard to get results.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Newtown Strikers 6-0

A hard fought game by both teams. Falcons began tentatively, but gained confidence with the full 11 players in the game. The first half saw Falcons create plenty of attack with Deb, Emma and Nicole showing great anticipation and intercepting forward moves from Strikers to send Falcons into attack again. Jenn W in goals for Strikers denied Falcons scoreboard success on many occasions, and solid defence from Kate, Sharon and Meg sent the ball out of the danger area for Strikers. Great running and movement by both teams in the midfield saw the ball go from end to end with Amanda, Georgie and Jacquie showing pace and skill to move the ball into the attacking area for Strikers.

With a score of 2-0 at half time, the game was evenly poised. The second half saw Falcons lift, with great running to space by Bec C and Tiahna which moved the ball quickly into attack, and with team mates in good position, Falcons took advantage of the play to score 4 goals. Goal scorers were Nicole, Bec C, Jess W 2, and Phoebe 2. Best Players this week were Emma P, Nicole and Tiahna.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Falcons 5-3

Goal Scorers: Adham H 2, Hamish Boyd 1, Carl 1, Lachlan Baensch 1

With both teams starting the game with 9 players it was always going to be interesting to see how the game would be played and how fatigue levels would affect the second half. Right from the start of the game both teams came out fast with many end to end plays but minimal scoring in the first half due to solid defensive efforts from both teams. Going into half time the Falcons were up 2 goals to Strikers 1.

As this wasn’t a convincing lead, we were expecting the Falcons to lift their game in the second half and they didn’t disappoint, through increased use of one touch passing and overlapping there were a number of goal opportunities but through the Strikers ability to quickly release the ball out of our defensive half we were able to score 4 consecutive goals which suddenly put the Falcons on the back foot where they were only able to pull back 1 goal in the final minutes of the game.

All up it was a fantastic team effort starting with Simon in goals making a number of difficult saves; Carl, Andrew and Jimmy blocking out attacks while creating the fast releases previously mentioned allowing Adham, Hamish, Lochie and David J to cause havoc through the mid field and open the second half goal frenzy.

The Strikers have been on a bit of a high over the past few weeks, our confidence is high and through constant efforts that have either been rewarded with exciting games or a win, today’s result will give us a chance at moving up to 4th place, which was one of our goals for the season and something that we will look to hold onto over the coming weeks.

2016 Hockey Season June 25 & 26

With the junior hockey season breaking for school holidays, our senior teams provided some very pleasing performances. A first win of the season for Rebels, and great wins for Men’s Strikers, Men’s Falcons and Women’s Falcons.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 3-2

Hockey is like music. The concepts and rules that make up music are very much like the rules that govern a hockey game. Umpires enforce these rules so that we as players can compose and perform a game of hockey that can be enjoyed by both those participating and those watching from the sidelines. When composing music you need pitch, rhythm, dynamics and timbre.

Our hockey game on Sunday had pitch (Pitch 1), had rhythm (a game plan based on possession of the ball), had dynamics (a mixture of conservative ball movement in defense and high risk passages in attack) and had timbre (a warm sort of sound, not based on individuals but on the team as a whole). There was Il Capitano (the violin) in defense, Molly Meldrum (the saxophone) in the forward line and The Car Man (the double bass) making solid tackles down back. There was the return of a favorite instrument in the Steady Arm (electric guitar) whose blond locks haven’t got any shorter and Chris O (the marimba) loved showing us his percussion backstick skills.

Without structure a group of instruments can lose their way, merely producing noise, but if organised the results can be pleasing to the ear and encourage dancing on wooden dance floors. For the most part we danced on a wooden dance floor keeping to our structure and controlling the game. As we became tired in the second half there was a drop off in our organisation and we did regress at times to a cacophony.

In the end it came down to Hats Off (the drum) to keep things simple and drag flick the winning goal from a short corner to shake Torquay’s resistance. May we hold our structure in the next game to produce something more reminiscent of a symphony (or a Coldplay concert at least).

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay Tornadoes 7-2

What a difference having a full side makes… The first half was pretty close with a number of goals being scored by both teams, three to Newtown and Torquay’s second just before half time which was a bit of a wake up call that we would have to lift our game in the second half.

The game plan moving forward was to focus on our short game and play the possession hockey which we’ve been working on this season.  Putting this into practice, we were able to hold Torquay from scoring in the second half, while ourselves scoring three additional goals through some fantastic displays of fast, accurate passing and switching the play to get around the Torquay defense.

With the school holiday break this weekend, hopefully some of the niggling injuries that some of our players have been carrying will have a chance to heal and we can continue on our mission of getting into, and staying in the top four.

A team dinner the night before, a season first win the next day, possibly the formula for success! With 11 players Rebels started off strong. Sound mid field play from Jacinta, Kellie and Tracey gave Rebels the edge when in defence to bring up play to the forwards. Eichelle, Pam and Ros provided sound sweeps to keep Golden Plains out.  Speedster Kate sealed our first goal in the first half.

Going into the  second half, the forwards cranked up a gear with fast play down the right wing between Julie and Nicola. Peta was pivotal in sending the big hits up front with great running from Katelyn. A great team goal resulted from this constant pressure.

Well done girls. A great match and a great result.

2016 Hockey Season June 18 & 19

This week’s matches in the 2016 hockey season were hit by the mid-winter blues it seems, with many teams missing their regular line-ups, but the effort of all those players who filled in cannot be faulted.

 Kookas Junior

A very close game in the Kookas Junior match this week, with Team Red finishing the winners 5-4 despite the late surge from Team Orange. All players are developing great skills and Amy is showing the benefit of strong passing to team mates.  Nice channelling by Sam S to gain an advantage for Team Orange and set up attacks, with Sam H in great supporting position.  Ella’s long reach saw her gain possession in the midfield and controlled running with the ball to put pressure on the opposition defence put her in great position to score. A very enjoyable game as usual.

Under 8

Newtown Spirit v Newtown Raiders

Newtown Spirit revealed just how much they’ve improved as a team when they met talented Newtown Raiders at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday. There were moments of great passing, with linked play almost the length of the field, as Spirit members looked for the best options before sending the ball onwards to teammates. With Charlotte, Nate and Summah patrolling the half back line in the first half, they kept their work rate up as they fed the ball to forwards Meyah, Lucy and Max who ran hard into attack. Despite some initial `wanderlust’, players eventually settled more firmly into their positions, cutting back on crowding issues and opening up play. And that’s when they began to shine, with some rewarding passages of play.

After a position reshuffle at half time, Ruben joined the action on the half back line and the team took to the field with enthusiasm. They concentrated on accurate passing, positions, marking and calling. And they gelled as a team, sharing the ball and joining forces to work around their determined opposition. And work hard they did, with Raiders putting in a strong effort time and again to keep Spirit away from the goals. Lucy played a clever game, scouting out passing possibilities and then firing off accurate shots to teammates as they ran into position. She got the ball rolling on a great passage of play from left half back, shooting it forwards to Nate on the wing, who sent it to Meyah lurking dangerously in front of goals. It was an excellent sight from the sidelines. While Lucy won the Best Team Player award for the match, the entire team contributed strongly. Some spectators described the second half as one of Spirit’s most cohesive team efforts this season which is encouraging to hear. Thanks must go to Spirit’s Avah and fill-in Pollyanna for helping bolster numbers for another Newtown Under 8 team during Saturday’s play. Well done girls.

Newtown Raiders vs Newtown Spirit

The best game of the hockey season so far for Newtown Raiders. Raiders began well with Cait defending the goals, stopping many shots by Spirit and taking quick free passes to team mates in space. Isabel is always determined to gain possession for her team, and runs hard to cover and block off opposition attacks. Better scanning for free team mates and targeted passing by Charlotte, Oscar and Eamonn saw Raiders able to move the ball into attack, and Eliza-May was always in a good position and ready to receive the ball, and there were a number of very promising forward moves. Marking the opposition players is improving each week, and it’s great to see our players spreading out to create space for our attacks. Best Team Player award to Eliza-May.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay Tornadoes

We are so proud of the willingness of our team members volunteering to help out our opposition enabling everyone to play. Thank you to Amy and Eliza for taking turns to play for Torquay. Throughout the first half Strikers worked well together to have several successful attacks on goal. Great work from Mr Alex, Ruby, Eliza and Isla. Mr Alex is really developing some great skills. Ruby has such a fantastic understanding of the game and Eliza and Isla for following the ball and taking all opportunities. Emma was great in keeping to her position and calling for the ball for wide passes. Remember to pass out wide and follow on. Also don’t take too long with passes as we left ourselves open for Torquay to steal the ball straight off our stick.

During the second half we played without a goal keeper which saw Amelia come into play but dropped straight back into goal keeper when required. Amelia successfully defended goals and sent the ball straight back into play. Good defending from Mrs Alex throughout the second half. Amy returned to Strikers and Eliza assisted Torquay. Amy followed up on all her shots and defended well. Amelia was awarded Best Team Player of the match due to her resilience for remaining in the game after copping a stick to the hand.

Newtown Rebels vs Torquay

This week saw the Rebels matched up against Torquay. With Seb, Surry and Hamish away it was up to the girls to represent the Rebels. A big thank you to Avah and Pollyanna who were a great addition to the team. Super effort girls! The first half was a little congested and positions were hard to identify, however there were some standout intercepts from Hana and Mai.  Mai’s intercept resulting in a pass to Scarlett who showed great stick control to take the ball forward and score a goal. Georgie was put under pressure in defence but was able to keep Torquay at bay, getting the ball out of the offence and forward to her teammates. Hannah received our Best Team Player Award for listening to Colleen’s instructions, staying in position and on her player, taking some great saves in front of goal and most importantly never giving up! Well done Hannah.

Under 11 North

Newtown Rebels vs Geelong 5-0

Newtown Rebels met Geelong at Stead Park for their Round 9 clash on Saturday. Basyl and Olivia controlled the ball through the midfield from the get-go, and made sure the ball moved forward on both left and right wings. Basyl was able to get the ball deep into attack and find Brandon and Patrick on a few occasions but neither could get through the Geelong defenders for a goal. Teijai scored soon after and followed up with another goal to put Newtown ahead 2-nil.

Patrick (2) and Basyl were our other goal scorers for the day, with the final score being Newtown 5-0.

Imogen contined her great work from previous weeks up forward, and nearly scored a goal after receiving a nice pass from Basyl in the ‘D”. Brandon also had a chance at goal after teaming with Patrick up forward. Genevieve and Sam were great in defence, stopping a few Geelong attacks, and Kiah was great as goalkeeper for the day, saving a few charges at goal from Geelong.

Under 11 South

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 1-1

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia 0-2

Kardinia applied the pressure to the Strikers defence from the start, but Jack and Oliver were not daunted, and were able to block a number of forward moves. A last minute switch due to illness saw Nathan put the pads on, and he made some great saves in front of goal. Some tentative play in the first half allowed Kardinia to gain possession and push their advantage to move into attack.

The second half saw a more determined Newtown Strikers team, with some great 1-2 play on the left between Owen and Chris, well backed up by Kenna. Great work by Lachie in his first ever game of hockey, showing great ball control and a cool head to look for team mates.  Declan worked hard in the centre and was able to move the ball forward to reach the circle and we earned a number of penalty corners, but without success on the score board. Best Team Player awards to Nathan and Lachie.

Under 13

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay Tornadoes 2-1

What can only be described as the best game of the season so far, this was a fantastic game of hockey between Newtown and Torquay.  Every single player contributed and worked really hard to win a close fought game 2-1.  There was some great passing and link up play up forward and some fantastic defensive work down back.  Jarrett had his best game of the season playing full back, stopping many Torquay attacks but also breaking the lines with run and carry to open up attacking opportunities.  Thanks to Harry B for filling in who scored a lovely toma after a mini solo run.  A lovely goal was scored by Angus A also off a short corner.  A great win team, well done!

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains Bellarine 7-0

The Strikers had a strong win against Golden Plains/Bellarine on Saturday morning.  In a good team display, playing without a person in goal, the Strikers kept a clean sheet.   Ella scored in the first half as did Miles.

In the second half the game opened up and there were further goals from Basyl who was filling in for the team, Flynn and Miles.   Particularly pleasing was the effort of players to implement skills practiced at training during the week.  Charlotte played a strong game as did Sam through the middle and Angus sweeping in defence.

Under 15

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 2-2

U15 Spirit drew 2-2 with Torquay in a highly competitive encounter. The Spirit started the game strongly, controlling the play despite missing several regular players. Fantastic passing and tackling resulted in sustained periods of attack that were only denied by desperate Torquay defence and sharp goal keeping. Eventually the stalemate was broken with consecutive goals to Amber leading to a 2-0 score line at half-time with the Spirit well on top. The second-half saw a reversal of fortunes with Torquay gaining the ascendancy and putting the Spirit under continued pressure. Torquay eventually took advantage scoring two quick goals to level the score. To the team’s credit they gritted their collective teeth and defended grimly, continually denying Torquay. Max was outstanding in goal and Jemma and Olivia fantastic with their tackling.

 Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains 12-0

The Strikers had a strong win over Golden Plains on Saturday, 12:0. The team started off with a rapid goal frenzy notching up 8 goals in the first half with both the Hudson twins and Miles joining in to rack up the tally. Playing good solid stick to stick hockey and optimising positions in the D, the ball was routinely moved up either wing straight on to a Strikers stick to send it home.

After the half time break, Golden Plains came back with a new game plan and far more aggression. Putting pressure up on the back line with multiple short corner opportunities and some determined attacks on goal, and it was only thanks to the combined and co-ordinated defence of Eneko, Casey and Luka in goals that kept Golden Plains scoreless. The final 4 goals came from short corner shots with Ella our latest recruit finishing off a wonderful piece of set play.

Rachel was nominated Most Valuable Player of the match for the Strikers for her consistently smart positioning and anticipation of play, she was always in the right place at the right time.

Under 17

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia 4-2

We were a bit concerned that we would not have enough players leading up to this game; however after some strong campaigning by Janette and Ruth we were able to have a complete team – thanks to both of you for your efforts.

Kardinia started the game with plenty of energy and it took us a little while to get a breakthrough.  We earned a short corner after about 10 minutes but hadn’t quite planned our structure for the set up since our usual key forwards were not playing.  Despite this, the corner was executed to perfection with Amber passing back to Corey who curled the ball around his body making a difficult goal look easy.  Corey followed up with another field goal shortly thereafter.  Never one to shy away from some intra-team competition, Gus then scored two rapid goals to make it two all by half time (Corey 2 – Gus 2, Kardinia yet to score).

Kardinia rallied the troops at half time and significantly lifted their work rate in the second half.  Erin and Jack read the play beautifully though and intercepted many of their attacks with cleanly executed tackles.  However the most impressive defensive skills in the second half came from Luka making some fantastic saves; we are seeing some massive improvements from this guy!  Kardinia eventually managed to score from a short corner mid-way through the second half.  They scored another goal late in the game from a short corner which we had to defend with one player down after a controversial break by the defense.  Once again, this team played great hockey and delighted the spectators with skilful but unselfish play.

Newtown Spirit vs Saints 1-3

Difficult week as U17 Team Managers – many players away and a scramble to work out a plan, that won’t negatively impact on our long term position, nor break the double up rule. So big thank you to Janette Welsh – U17 Strikers, who did a lot of the ground work, enabling Spirit to get on the field today with 9 field players. Also huge thank you to the pool of players prepared to play outside of their normal teams, and in addition to their U15 commitments. Eneko and Corey did a great job today and made a valuable difference to our game.

Spirit dominated the play today, with coaching focusing on attack and maintaining position, rather than trying to compensate for our lack of GK. Our team did a great job, and dominated the play in the first half against a similarly undermanned Saints team. Unable to follow through and score with a well performing Saints GK, Spirit’s efforts to continue to attack, weakened in the second half allowing Saints some open opportunity for shots on goal in an undefended goal net. Jonah scored a nice goal in the second half, but Spirit were unable to maintain their running in defense and eventually conceded 3 goals to Saints to lose 3:1.

Well done to our very under manned team – absolutely played true to your name!!!

 Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Geelong 12-0

“You need to strive to be better than everyone else. I didn’t say you needed to be better than everyone else. But you gotta try. That’s what character is: It’s in the try”.

Falcons had a good win on the weekend, we tried and we were successful. One of the most pleasing aspects was our movement and possession of the ball, using our backs to control the tempo of the game. The team continues to develop with the focus on each player “playing their role” within the team.

Handles was influential as always, controlling the back half and getting dressed early. Capitano refused to man up in the second half which was amusing and SFG did not score from the baseline. Molly Meldrum’s car broke down and Coach No Beard got thirsty. Birsa and Probey played well for us up forward, slotting very nicely into the team, while Pinnie and Rosso were dependable as always. Rosso playing last line of defence with three Geelong forwards bearing down on him was a sight to behold.

On any given Sunday you’re gonna win or you’re gonna lose. The point is – can you win or lose like a Falcon? We look forward to Torquay next week.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 1-5

Unfortunately another game that could have had a much different result if we weren’t scrambling for players minutes before the start of the game.  To the players that did turn up and those that filled in at extremely short notice a big thank-you is in order.  The actual game itself was quite competitive and the goals that did get through were typically when our defensive structure fell apart leaving our goalie exposed.  All in all, a good game.

Newtown Rebels vs Saints 0-2

The prospect of a bench did much to rally the troops on Saturday. Although Saints got away to score 2 quick goals in the first half, Rebels settled into a game of self control, carefully marking out key players to take them out of the game.

On the left side Lexie and Rachael teamed up beautifully to advance many of Rebel’s attacks. Kirsty made good use of her wing to direct play forward with Nicola collecting intercepts from free hits. We were rewarded with several penalty corners and were unlucky not to score. A new fullback lineup with Ros, Ainsley and Claire did well to break down Saint’s attempts on goal. Our ever reliable half lineup with Jacinta, Tracey and Kellie plus the dynamo  in goals, Eichelle, maintained the pressure throughout the game The second half was the highlight of the season so far, with Rebels playing so well together. Well done girls!

 

 

2016 Hockey Season June 4 & 5

 At the halfway point of the hockey season, there are some very pleasing results for our teams. And it’s great to see that even at this stage of the season, we still have new members joining our teams.

Kookas Junior

Team Red were determined to avenge past losses against Team Orange this week, and began strongly with some nice attacking moves from Ella and Sam H. Great defence by Zac, Sam S and Jai saw Team Orange regain control and put the pressure back on Red’s defence lineup, with Amy showing great ball control and strong passes to team mates. After half time, a position and team change saw Zac creating forward moves for Red with a using the space behind the ball to find team mates. Great skills by all players with improvements in ball control and passing resulting in some very enjoyable and competitive games.

Under 8

Newtown Rebels vs Golden Plains 2

This week the Rebels came up against a very competitive side in Golden Plains 2, making the team earn every goal. Hamish played with confidence, keeping the Golden Plains forwards at bay and fending off several attempts at goal.  Once again Hana was impressive with her all round skills, getting down low when intercepting, putting pressure on the opposition and then moving the ball forward to her team mates. Scarlett worked hard through the midfield taking possession of the ball from some very skilled opponents – her constant pressure resulted in several turn overs. Great work Scarlett! In the first half Georgie used her stick well, stopping the ball and taking control before pushing, resulting in two well deserved goals. In the second half, Surry found a path through a very tough defence, running the ball downfield scoring an amazing goal. Mai showed lots of determination and focus this week, listened to Colleen’s instructions, and received player of the day award. Well done Mai! We also welcomed Hattie to her first game of hockey. Super effort Hattie!

Newtown Strikers vs College Green

We faced a tough opponent in College Green this week. Ruby showed great coverage of the field and was always there to support the goal keeper. Eliza showed great coverage of the field and her footwork was impressive. Alex S was always following the ball on the field and made some strong defensive tackling. Amy and Emma held their positions on the wings when the game became congested by the opposition play in front of goals. Amelia and Isla shared the role of goal keeper, replacing each other after each sustained injuries. Thank you both for sharing the role and to all the team for showing concern for your fellow team mates.

We needed to concentrate on better choices for our passes and trapping the ball as the easy turnovers lead to College getting the upper hand throughout the game. Also when making passes from the side we needed to be in front of our opponent to receive the ball instead of trying to pass through the opposition. Ruby was awarded Best Team Player for her willingness to help her team mates out on the field.

Newtown Spirit v Newtown Raiders

Newtown Spirit put in a determined performance against Newtown Raiders at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday. Spirit players worked hard to mark their opposition effectively and pass the ball cleanly to team mates. Meyah, starting at left half, was always scouting for good opportunities to move the ball forward. She didn’t waste time, taking her free hits quickly and precisely, reaching moving targets including fellow half back Nate. Nate was relentless in attack and defence, moving the ball skilfully and proving a danger to the opposition. Spirit players all dug deep and kept their work rate high in the first half, earning applause from Coach Kellie. At half time Kellie urged them to look to the sidelines for passing options and use their stick skills to spin with the ball so they could work out where their team mates were before sending the ball their way.

After a position reshuffle Spirit came out firing, peppering the goals with some great play. Right half Lucy and centre half Ruben got some clever shots away while Avah and Charlotte made their mark on the forward line. Pollyanna, left half, showed she was not scared to get involved in the action in only her second game in the Under-8 competition. The players showed they’d listened to their coach’s words, sticking to their positions more effectively, marking their opposition and working the ball from team mate to team mate. More than half the side took part in one stand-out passage of linked play, with Meyah, Lucy, Charlotte and Nate combining through great passing to send the ball deep into attack while skilfully avoiding the talented Raiders outfit. Meyah, who graced half back, forward and goalie positions during the game, won the Best Team Player award for her persistent good work across both halves.

Newtown Raiders vs Newtown Spirit

The teamwork and strategic play of Newtown Raiders continues to improve each week, with players concentrating on the play and quick movement of the ball. Great defensive efforts by our team to confront the opposition and gain possession, resulted in forward moves with strong passing and controlled dribbling. Great position and determination by Cate earned her the Best Team Player award this week.  Speedy play by Isabel, Eliza-May and Cate created some fantastic play for Raiders, and with Charlotte and Oscar in good position to receive the ball, there were a number of chances to score. Jesse and Eamonn contributed to the play with sticks on the ground, and good passing, always ready to support team mates and gain an advantage for the team.

Newtown Rebels vs Bellarine Thunder 9-0

The U11 Newtown Rebels met Bellarine Thunder at Lloyd Reserve on another drizzly day last Saturday. Newtown went into attack quickly and our attacking pressure all game was too much for Bellarine, with Newtown winning 9-nil. Well done to Imogen for scoring her first goal of the season – and narrowly missing out on a few more goals. Other goal scorers for the day were Kiah (3), Sam (2), Basyl, Patrick and Luca. Thanks to Grace for being Goalkeeper on the day, and well done to the whole team for their exceptional teamwork.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia 1-2

This weeks game was somewhat different to games we have played in the past. From the very start the Spirit team were on the back foot as Kardinia scored a very quick, unexpected goal. From this moment on the Spirit were a little flustered and seemed to forget to play in their position and to trust their team mates that they knew what to do. Lots of crowding took place and I think Kellie was getting a little tired of telling people to find a player!

Having said all of that. There were some stand out performances on the day. Harry (despite feeling rather ordinary) played a great game on the wing and often placed himself in great positions. Daniel also had himself in excellent positions on the other wing. As a result he inadvertently scored himself a goal while on the post and connecting with a great cross from the right from Angus. He looked quite bewildered when all the parents and kids started to celebrate the goal. I am not sure he actually realised what had happened. Ruby also played well in the back line in the second half which saw her get the Best Team Player award along with Harry.

We were very unlucky not to score more goals as the second half was dominated by our forwards but the Kardina defence stood up well. Angus was quite unlucky not to score with 2 great crossed balls from the right of the circle missing by not very much and the goalie blocking another of his strong balls very well. We were undermanned again this week, but once again Nate and Ruben stepped up from the Minkeys to fill our gaps. Ruben went one step further and volunteered for goalie. A very big thank you to him. With a week off we should all be back in 2 weeks at full strength (hopefully) ready and raring to go.

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains 3-1

A much better game by Strikers with Jack, Nathan and Michael making some great saves and defence interceptions, not allowing Golden Plains to dominate. Great midfield play by Sam S and Owen blocked many of Golden Plains attacks and turned the ball back into attack. Great running and support for team mates saw Declan score the first goal, with many forward moves by Basyl, Zoe and Grace.  Good focus and concentration on the ball saw Chris gain possession and allow Strikers to move into attack. Best Team Player awards to Basyl and Chris.

Under 13

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia 7-0

Round 7 saw U13 Spirit play KIC it was great to have a win (7:0).  From the sidelines we saw some great passages of play with great passing and teamwork to get the ball up through the field and also some great efforts by several players to get back in defence when KIC threatened.  It was most pleasing to see 6 individual goals scorers in the match which demonstrates the great team effort of the win.  Riley played a great game on the wing and positioned himself well to score a great goal. Archie also played really well scoring his first goal.  It is great to see the team improving each week.

Round 7 brought the best game so far this season, even though the Strikers went down 3:2 against a very strong Torquay the level and quality of play was first rate. Playing as a full team, make very good use of team plays and using the open wings it was only bad luck that did not see the game ending as a draw. Both of the Newtown goals came from short corner opportunities thanks to strikes from Oscar and Miles. Luka in goals had his work cut out for him, especially in the first half in which he fended off 14 seperate attacks, earning him our Most Valuable Player award for the game. Our latest team members, Ella and Will have slotted into the team well, both performing very well and finding good position through out the game.

Newtown Strikers vs Saints 13-0

Another excellent team performance by the Strikers this weekend.  We jumped to an early 6-0 lead by the 15 minute mark of the first half thanks to some great displays of skill from our fill-ins, Gus and Gabe.  We continued to play very well as a team for the rest of the game with good passing and distribution from the backline with Corey and Hudson providing an impenetrable wall; Luka did not have to touch the ball in goals for the entire match.  Despite a convincing lead, we did not relax our work rate and continued to work hard on the little things that make a difference like leading and dragging opposition players out of the play when we needed to open up space.  We ended up with a good distribution of goals scorers with Will and Erin both slotting in some nice deflections in the second half.  Another pleasing performance for both the players and the spectators alike.

Newtown Strikers vs Saints 2-9

As is becoming an unfortunate trend for the Strikers, we took to the field undermanned with a player short after two players didn’t show up, against a full strength Saints team sporting three players on the bench. Even with this disadvantage, Strikers played a gutsy hard fought game against a full strength Saints.

The score certainly didn’t reflect the way all players worked super hard to support each other and we held our own playing some great team hockey.  With the much appreciated help of two stars doubling up from the Falcons, Lachie B and Nic M, we were able to slot some nice goals from quick play on frees catching the opposition off guard.  There were a number of attacking plays that resulted in some classic tomahawk goals from Nic M. With the defence under constant attack Simon (GK) was awesome!!  It was a shame there weren’t more spectators there to witness his incredible goalie feats.  Save after save he kept denying the Saints easy goals, with a couple of awe inspiring full stretch glove saves.  The majority of Saints goals were scored from short corners which is a testament to Simon’s fantastic goal keeping saving countless other attempts, but what was even more impressive was that after each setback on the scoreline, the team rallied and set about rebuilding and continuing to play the short, sharp possession hockey which has been a standout for this side throughout the season. A big thanks to Richard Stella who was our sole full back who did a stellar job (pardon the pun!), and David C and Corey, coming up from the Spirit team, who provided some nice options in attack.  The help of Nic M and Lachie B was much appreciated, but not to overshadow the standout efforts of the regular line up of Hamish B, Simon, Carl and Nick P. Well done team, an enjoyable loss!!

Definitely looking forward to the break next weekend, hopefully it will give some injured bodies a chance to heal and we’ll be back even stronger for the remainder of the season.

A game of firsts – first senior game for Rachael, first game in goals for Kellie, first game ever and first goal for Aniqa.

Humid conditions welcomed the Rebels, complete with new players Aniqa and Rachael S to the line up. With a succession plan in place, Kellie stepped into goals, firing on all cylinders. Despite Torquay taking off to a quick lead, Rebels were able to find their players and force many passoffs and slow down play. Rebels were rewarded in the early second half with goals from Peta and Aniqa. Sound defence again from Jacinta, Bron and Rachael to keep Torquay at bay.

A huge thank you to Bron K for filling in. Hopefully Aniqa and Rachael can return to the lineup! Well done girls.

2016 Hockey Season May 28 & 29

As the 2016 hockey season progresses, the development of skills and teamwork is suggesting an enjoyable year for all, and holds the promise of another successful year for the Newtown Hockey Club.

Kookas Midweek Hockey

 Another great game by all players this week, with Sam S and Ella making great position for Team Red to intercept passes meant for Team Orange. Jai and Ben provided great support, making position in attack to move the ball forward. Good use of space in front of goal saw the score mount up for Team Red. Great running by Amy, Cate and Sam H for Team Orange but the defence of Team Red made it hard to score.  The second half saw some fantastic challenges by Cate, and she gained possession and sent her team into attack with a lovely through pass, and resulted in  a goal for Orange after some slick passing in front of goal. Great effort everyone.

Under 8

Newtown Strikers vs College White

Thank you to Amelia for volunteering to play for another Newtown team. We have been impressed with everyone’s willingness to help out with other teams.

Throughout the first half everyone displayed great defence in what was an evenly matched first half against College White. Eliza showed great coverage of the field and following the ball throughout the entire game. Ruby was always helping her team out with calling and running back to help support Alex S in goals. Emma showed a growing confidence on the wing with strong passes back into play. Amy was able to read the play and took the opportunity to gain possession and running down the field.

The second half was a slower start with College managing to get a couple of quick goals in. Alex J was able to tackle College to gain possession and calling for assistance.  Alex S was brought into the centre half to also take on the tackling role. After a period as goal keeper Isla moved back into the right half to get a couple of attacks on goals. The last few minutes were hotly contested and everyone lifted their game. Emma was awarded Best Team Player for great work on the wing. Remember to be 5 steps away so your team mate has someone to pass to.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Rebels

Newtown Spirit concentrated on ball control and accurate passes in a good-natured encounter with stablemate Rebels at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday. Spirit enjoyed a full contingent of players so loaned Ruben, Charlotte and Pollyanna, who was trying out Under-8 competition for the first time, to help fill Rebels’ depleted ranks.
Spirit put in a strong first half, with Max and Nate on fire from the start. The boys worked well together with their passing as they successfully drove the ball forwards time and again. Max switched teams part way into the half after illness forced an opposition player from the field.

While play was concentrated in the centre corridor in the first half, Spirit attempted to spread the action to the wings after the break. Despite only having four to their side for the majority of the game, Nate, Meyah, Avah and Lucy didn’t let up on their pace, combining well in both defence and attack. Lucy made some clever passes, including off free hits, to set up a great sequence of play on several occasions. Meyah put in a strong performance, shutting down fast breaks by Rebels and, when in attack, proved a valuable option for fellow teammates.  She, like sister Avah, never stopped running. The two combined well during the game.

Spirit’s players didn’t get a chance to feel cold during the game – none of them really had time to stand still. The four players displayed an impressive work rate as they covered the whole field, backing up their team mates when needed and supporting each other as they pushed forward. Lucy won the Best Team Player award for Spirit after showing great vision, impressive passing and good selection when taking free hits. Great game Spirit and well done also to the Spirit trio who put in a strong match for Rebels to help out their numbers.

Newtown Rebels vs Newtown Spirit

Well done to both teams in a very exciting match which showed how well both teams have improved their skills. With Rebels only having three players, it was wonderful to see how Spirit were willing to loan their players. Charlotte was wonderful with her trapping of the ball and hitting into space and tackling. Ruben starred in the middle and on the backline trapping balls well and running into space. Max moved with speed down the middle passing to team mates and calling for the ball. A great game by Pollyanna in her first U8 game, staying on the wing well, with strong tackling and she never gave up.

Well done to Scarlett and Hamish who found space and called for the ball, with some fantastic passing to team mates. Great commitment by Mai to come even though she wasn’t 100% well, and had to retire early. Hope she is feeling better soon. Overall, a great game by all players, and the efforts of the Spirit players were much appreciated.

Newtown Raiders vs Kardinia 3

Growing confidence and improving skills are evident each week for Newtown Raiders, and the determination of players to take possession of the ball and the game was demonstrated well by Cate and Isabel. Great ball control skills and focus on the ball saw Newtown Raiders control the game early in the first half, with Isabel finishing off a number of attacks strongly. Lovely passing by Eliza-May found Amelia and Charlotte in space in the scoring zone and set up opportunities to have a shot. Great defence by Oscar, and great support by Cate for her teammates in attack kept the play in Newtown’s forward half for much of the game. Jesse gained possession with his stick on the ground, and made some nice passes to move the ball forward for Newtown. Thanks to Amelia for filling in for Raiders. Best Team Player award to Jesse.

Under 11 North

 Newtown Rebels vs Bellarine Lightning 2-1

The U11 Newtown Rebels met Bellarine Lightning at Stead Park for their 8:15am match on Saturday. A sunny morning soon gave way to light rain and a chilly breeze, but that didn’t stop both teams from having a red-hot go. Bellarine Lightning came out firing with many pushes into attack. There were a barrage of short corners for Bellarine, but our defense of Genevieve, Grace, Charlotte and goalkeeper Olivia held tight. Imogen and Brandon had some nice touches through the mid-field, and Basyl was able to take the ball well into our forward half but scoring opportunities for both he and Kiah were defended well by Bellarine. With a few minutes remaining to half time, Kiah was able to score thanks to some good passing from Sam, Basyl and Patrick.

In the second half, Bellarine again troubled our defenders and soon evened up the score one-all. From then, neither side could make the most of their opportunities although Bellarine seemed to have more of the ball. With minutes to go Newtown had the ball in our forward line a few times but couldn’t convert. It looked like being our first drawn game for the season until, with seconds to go, Teijai received the ball more than 5 metres out and hit a great goal that sealed the win.

Congratulations to Charlotte on reaching 25 Junior games for Newtown, and thanks to Teijai and Brandon for topping up Bellarine’s team for a half each.

Newtown Spirit vs Golden Plains 2-1

This weeks game was yet again a great effort by all. Peter Eastman stepped in as coach and the kids listened well to his instructions. Nate and Max stepped up from Under 8 to help us field a team. These young Under 8 players are certainly willing and more than able.

The game was a challenge due to some interesting play by the opposition but Spirit dealt with the swinging sticks and rough play really quite well. We certainly had plenty of the play with many shots on goal. Golden Plains’ defence was quite strong and they held us to 2 goals ( Angus 1, Mia 1) which would have been 3 but for the whistle being blown just as Harry struck the ball!

The team is starting to play very well together and the ball is being moved up the field well. The players are starting to realise that you can go back to make more room before heading forward. Well done everyone. Best Team Players were Liam and Oliver.

Newtown Strikers vs College White 0-3

College began the game strongly, and the crowded play made it difficult for Newtown to move into attack. Michael in goals made some great stops, and Nathan worked hard to take free hits quickly but we found it hard to penetrate the College press on our free hits, leaving our defence under great pressure.  Lack of precision in passing did not allow Newtown to create any great headway in the first half. Some position changes at half time resulted in better co-ordination between team mates, and pro-active defence and some great passing from Jack and Grace B found space for forwards Declan, Owen and Zoe to get the ball into the attack zone, with a couple of near misses in front of goals. More determination and focus on gaining possession is required if Newtown Strikers are to show what a great team they can be.  Thanks Ruben from Under 8 for filling in. Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 4-1

Congratulations to the team for a good win (4:1) against Torquay, who despite being 2 players short played a strong game and challenged us several times.  A clear highlight of the the game was the great passing forward and out of defence.  Harry had a cracker of a game with some great passes, tackles, runs with the ball and hitting the first goal of the game.  Max (RHB) also had a fantastic game and was so solid in defence and in moving the ball through to our forwards.  I have to mention the awesome goal by Torquay off a short corner, lobbing the ball up and over, perfectly weighted to just fall into the net over everyone’s heads.  It is so exciting to see the skills of our junior players!

Under 15

Newtown Spirit vs Bellarine 2-3

 A dogged Under 15 Spirit went down to Bellarine 3-2 in a highly competitive game. Fielding only 9 players the team lived up to it’s name, defending grimly and attacking with tenacity throughout the match. In the first half both teams had only a few genuine scoring chances, with the undermanned Spirit having the better of general play. The Spirit was unlucky not to score first with Matt creating an opportunity for Tom, who’s shot on goal deflected off the post. Bellarine eventually scored through a well taken short corner but the Spirit struck back almost immediately with a powerful strike from Amber, also from a short corner. In the second half, despite fatigue beginning to set in, the team continued to follow instructions from Niko to run and spread the ball. Eventually however Bellarine gained the ascendency and using it’s numerical advantage generated numerous scoring opportunities. The Spirit continued to defend grimly with Erin in particular stoic in defence and Max showing fantastic skill and determination in goal, saving several shots (many consecutively). Despite these efforts Bellarine scored two second half goals. A late goal to Tom gave the Spirit a small chance of salvaging a draw but time ran out. It was a fantastic effort by all players who never stopped trying throughout the match.

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia 5-1.

The U15 Strikers took a strong win against Kardinia on the weekend with a final score of 5:1. Scoring early with a goal from Oscar in the first few minutes set up a very fast first half that had the forwards converting 3 more chance before halftime. The second half saw a resurgent Kardinia with them scoring a goal early and putting our back line under constant pressure for the most of the second half. Taking advantage of a late short corner, Jack put away his second goal and the 5th for the team. Great field play from Rachael ensured the ball was moved quickly into position setting up many opportunities and ensuring that she was voted as our most valuable player for the game.

Under 17

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 7-1

Before this game, the Strikers, were sitting in second place on the ladder and came up against Torquay who were sitting third on the ladder; only one win behind.  This was going to be an important game to ensure that we cemented ourselves in second place on the ladder.  And what a performance!  It was a great example of team play with all players working extremely well to support each other.  The two Toms got us off to a flying start with both scoring early goals.  Given the good start to the game, coach decided to try a few players out in different positions to test their versatility.  Erin was moved into a high centre forward role and scored within five minutes after positioning herself perfectly in the spot.  All of the spectators were impressed with the first half display and we were rewarded with a halftime lead of six-nil.  Torquay increased their work rate in the second half and pushed some of their players forward to try and reduce the impact of our forward press.  Luka was put under a bit more pressure in the second half but responded with some fantastic saves off a couple of Torquay tomma’s.  It was impossible to pick a best on ground this week as it was an impeccable team effort.

Newtown Falcons vs Saints 4-2

Buddha once said ‘Three things can not be long hidden: The sun, the moon and the truth’. The truth is that SFG in incapable of not scoring from the baseline. Even when he does not mean to, he scores from the baseline. Even opposition goalies want SFG to score from the baseline. A good win against Saints warms the cockles of your heart and last weekend’s game was no exception. Handles had everything under control down back, Rossie and Big Red doubled up, and GK Thornster had his first win against his old club. Well done lads. Big thanks to Peter Stuart for his work too.

 Newtown Strikers vs Geelong 3-1

Well it just goes to show that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. After the pummeling that the Strikers have endured over the past two weeks, we were keen to play against Geelong as they beat us earlier in the season 3 – 2. From the start of the game the Strikers took control, maintaining possession of the ball through a combination of back passing and short one twos which we’ve been working on throughout the season. Effective manning up in the midfield forced Geelong out wide limiting their chances at scoring, while our attacking plays were able to better use our numbers for a combination of field goals and short corner conversions. But we can’t rest on our success, next week has us up against Saints which will be another tough game and another chance to continue to improving both individually and as a team.

 Newtown Spirit vs Bellarine Storm 2-2

Spirit played a high intensity match against Bellarine this week that resulted in a 2 all draw.  The pleasing aspect to the match was that Spirit had a lot of possession and were very strong in defence again this week, despite a couple of hiccups.  Once we get the forwards to pass and run to go around the opposition we will start to move up the table. Well done to everyone – a whole team effort.

Division 2 Women

 Newtown Rebels vs Geelong 0-3

A big winter welcome back to Pam Oliveiro. Great to have you back as centre half again. Geelong started off fast and slick with a quick goal. Rebels upped their marking and made great plays to thwart Geelong’s many attacks. Outstanding ball control from Jacinta coupled with Eichelle’s freaky saves kept Rebels in the game. Sharon and Colleen earned their stripes under the constant attack.

In the second half Newtown made a few break throughs with good ball passes along the wings. Emily W played so well in her first senior game, creating space and driving play through to the circle. Rebels were rewarded with a penalty corner and were unlucky not to score.

Overall a great game with Rebels holding up well throughout the match. Thoughts are with Andy. Hope the hamstring is OK.
