National Hockey Week

National Hockey Week

The first ever National Hockey Week, from Saturday May 28 to Sunday June 5, is about celebrating the achievements of our members and of the Australian men’s and women’s hockey teams – the Kookaburras and the Hockeyroos.

With the 2016 Summer Olympics coming up in August, we will all be glued to the television to watch and marvel at the skills of the Aussie players, and cheer them on to a medal.

National Hockey Week is also a great chance for us to share hockey with the Geelong community – and show why it’s such good fun!

The Kookaburras are currently ranked the #1 men’s team in the world, and the Hockeyroos are not far behind at #3 in the women’s teams rankings. Jamie Dwyer, named International Player of the Year on 5 occasions, has indicated the Rio Olympics will be his last tournament for Australia, but even at the age of 36, he still has silky skills and is a danger to the opposition in any game.

Hockey really is a sport for the whole family, and the Newtown City Hockey Club loves to see our families all playing together.

So if you are an adult who used to play hockey at school, and wouldn’t mind having a game again, or even if you have never played before – we would love to have you join us for our Saturday Social game at 1.00 pm each Saturday. We can loan you a stick and you don’t need a uniform – and it’s half-field so you don’t need to be superfit.

2016 Hockey Season Round 6

The 2016 hockey season is about one third of the way through and already we can see great improvement in skills and team play from all teams, and some good indications of a great season for many teams.

Kookas Midweek

Another great game this week in the Kookas battle of Team Orange vs Team Red.  Excellent ball control skills by Ella, and with good running to space by Amy, Team Orange were able to create some forward moves and a couple of near misses in front of goal. But great teamwork and passing by Team Red, with Sam S switching the play to Sam H and Jai in space saw Team Red successful in putting the goals on the board. Some nice firm passes to team mates by Hayden S also set Red up for a great possession game. Hayden E worked hard to block forward moves by Team Red, and taking up a great defence line to the goals, stopped many threatening attacks before Red could convert. Sam R couldn’t resist a break from line marking and joined the game too, adding some extra strength to Red’s attack.

Under 8

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia

To help rotate the players on the field to learn different positions we introduced a rule for a goal scorer then takes over the goal keeper position. Welcome back to Alex S who remained in his position and showed some good passes through the centre. In the early minutes of the match Isla successfully scored from a difficult angle on goal. Amelia then worked with Amy for nice passes on the wing. Amy had a beautiful curve ball along the sidelines keeping the ball in for Newtown. Some great tackling from Eliza and Emma was shown throughout the day. In the second half Alex S had an attack on goal and was very close to scoring. A reminder for everyone, after taking a shot you need to follow up on the ball. The second half also saw everyone up the ante with the defence. Alex J managed to also sneak the ball through to score. Thank you to Ruby for volunteering to help out with another Newtown team.

Best Team Player was awarded to Alex S. During the week please work on your running backwards. After the match a few players stayed back to work on pushing the ball rather than hitting.

Newtown Spirit v College White

Newtown Spirit showed its ongoing skill development in an encouraging display against College White in Under 8 competition on Saturday. Spirit took to the Lloyd Reserve field armed with instructions to ‘look to their team mates’. And they did, passing wide to each other in an attempt to avoid the highly congested centre corridor. The players worked hard for the ball, going back for second and third attempts and never giving up. After a position reshuffle at half time, the team continued its strong form. It was particularly pleasing to see the Spirit players keeping to their positions more effectively. They showed good vision with their passing and awareness of team mates around them.

Coach Kellie praised her players for their effort, setting them the challenge next week of improving their marking of the opposition. Nate won the Best Team Player award for the game after showing great control of the ball and good vision in his passing.

Newtown Rebels vs Newtown Raiders

The Rebels team played fellow Newtown team, the Raiders this week. We were grateful to have Ruby volunteer to play for us, particularly with a last minute withdrawal due to illness. Evident from the start, was the much improved confidence of the Rebels players to attack the ball when it was in their vicinity. Hana highlighted this early on, with a strong move in the centre, staying low and keeping her stick on the ground earning her a free hit. Well done Hana!

In the first half, much of the play was focussed in the centre third and defensive area of the Rebels. Rebel’s players made sure they were getting back to help out Surry on the last line of defence with Hamish noticeably pushing back hard when there was a change of possession. There were a  couple of positive opportunities moving forward. Hamish was working well with Georgie and Scarlett and a great passage of play involved all three moving the ball quickly from half-back across to the wing.  The effort of all players to move around when a teammate was taking a free hit was clear to see and helped spread out the play. Great work Hamish and Ruby in this area.

In the second half, some more attacking plays resulted with the move of Surry into a forward position and he made the most of his opportunities in the play. A strong and accurate pass through a gap to Ruby was also a highlight of the Rebels improved teamwork. Best Team Player was awarded to Hamish for an all-round solid performance, making space, chasing back and confidently attacking the goals.

Newtown Raiders vs Rebels

A great game with some good use of space allowed both teams to move the ball around well. Raiders defence skills were called into play early, and Oscar, Cate and Isabel showed great focus on the ball and great determination to confront the opposition and gain possession. Nice work by Charlotte, Jesse and Eamonn, playing his first game, saw them maintain possession of the ball until they found a team mate to pass to. Eliza-May was always in good position and provided the opportunity for the play to switch into open space on the opposite side of the field, leading to a number of strong moves into attack. The game showed the continuing improvement in team play and awareness of taking quick free passes to capitalise on possession.  Best Team Player award to Eamonn – great work keeping his stick down to gain possession and maintaining control.

Under 11 South

Newtown Spirit vs Geelong College White 4-0

This weeks game saw another stunning day of weather which made everyone feel very uplifted. We were short a few players but Nate and Ruben stepped up from the Under 8 competition to help us out. Ruben went one step further and padded up to be our goalie. He did  a great job despite the gear being a little big for him!

It was a wonderful game against another College team with the result in our favour this time around. Kellie was very happy with the team’s effort and was especially happy with the passing out wide and the talking in the second half. The pressure was certainly placed on the oppositions goalie often. Both Mia and Angus found the backboard in both halves with Angus’ second goal being an absolute pearler despite being hit in the head with a stick earlier in the game.

Best Team Players this week were Angus and Daniel who played a truly great game out on the wing and always being in the right spot.

Newtown Strikers vs Geelong College Green 1-5

Strikers fronted up against a very polished opposition this week, and missing a couple of regular players, were very grateful to have Sam S and Basyl fill in. Sam’s ball control and distribution skills saw him control the midfield, but somewhat crowded play and lack of square passing opportunities meant College were able to regain possession. Nathan did a fantastic job at full back, stopping many College forward moves and taking quick free passes to try and clear the defence circle. An injury to Kenna early in the game left the team at a disadvantage. Some nice saves in goals by Michael but College were quick to pounce on any loose balls. As the game went on, we saw Owen, Jack and Grace gain some possession and push forward into attack, and a switch to the right and a great run by Basyl resulted in a goal to Strikers. Chris and Gil moved to great positions to tackle and hold up College, but the slick passing from College was difficult to stop. Best Team Player awards to Sam S and Owen.

 Under 11 North

U11 Newtown Rebels travelled out to St. Ignatius College for their match against Bellarine Thunder this week. Bellarine Thunder came out strongly and tried to get forward but Newtown’s coverage in the midfield and in defense all morning was fantastic. The ball was soon in our forward half and Teijai and Patrick teamed well up forward to score a number of times. Basyl and Olivia also showed their skills navigating through heavy traffic up forward and were rewarded with goals in the first half. In the second half coach AJ again switched attackers and defenders and this gave Grace, Charlotte and Genevieve the opportunity to take the ball into attack a number of times, with Grace scoring 2 excellent goals. The final score was 11:0 with scorers Tejai (3), Grace (2), Olivia (2), Patrick (2), Basyl (1) and Sam (1). Thanks to Brandon for being this weeks Goalkeeper.

There were no games this week for the U13, U15 and U17 teams because of the Victorian Junior Country Championships.

D1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Newtown Strikers 12-0

There is an old Chinese adage, thought to have surfaced during the Ming Dynasty, that describes an eternal truth about life and hockey: Man who shoots from baseline, should not score. SFG has obviously not heard this adage and if he has, blatently disregards it. While Coach Redbeard tears his hair out trying to explain to SFG why you should not shoot from the baseline he scores from the baseline again. Anyway, we had a constructive game against Newtown Strikers with some very nice passages of play, particularly focussing on using the width of the pitch to open up the game. Birsel spent some time up forward which made people smile, and the dynamic duo Pinnie and Rosso had to withstand considerable pressure from Strikers till the final whistle. We would like to congratulate Leo Fitzgerald on being voted in as the Falcons captain for the 2016 season and look forward to ‘The Captain’ steering the Starship Falcon across various solar systems and galaxies.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Falcons 0-12

In a clash of the titans both teams came out swinging, and for the first 10 – 15 minutes things where looking pretty good for the Strikers with our defense holding up and a few plays into the attacking half of the field.  Unfortunately, playing at that level is both physically and mentally tiring, and by the end of the first half we’d let a few goals through. On the scoreboard the second half didn’t get much better with the remainder of the 12 goals being scored in faster succession as the game progressed through to the final whistle.

That being said, it was a positive game with some great hockey being played by both teams, we were able to consistently get the ball out of defense throughout the game and set up some goal scoring opportunities.  The key problem being that when we made mistakes or didn’t man up properly the Falcons were able to capitalize usually resulting in a goal (though the freakish baseline tommer goal from Sean was going a little too far… 😉  ). Collectively we’re looking forward to next weeks game vs Geelong, last time we played them we narrowly lost 3 – 2, so it will be a good chance to see how much we’ve improved since the start of the season.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Falcons 0-5

Falcons came out firing which put us in defence mode for the better part of both halves. Eichelle in goals made many saves, and was well supported by Sharon and Penny. Towards the end of the first half we were able to push forward a few times but unfortunately we did not get near the goal. In the second half we were able to keep Falcons scoreless with some fantastic defence and there were some great passes by our forward line, with Shannon R, Julie, Flora and Erin creating some good moves into attack with tireless running. It was a good test for our team considering we had 5 key players out.

Division 2 Men

Newtown Spirit vs Golden Plains 5-1

A great game for Spirit to bring up the first win for the season. After several weeks of being competitive but not quite getting one or other element right things clicked for Spirit this week to achieve a 5 – 1 win over Golden Plains.  In past weeks opposition teams have torn us apart in the mid field with fast breaks and insufficient numbers in defence.  This week, despite some very good opposition attacks the mostly close marking by Don, Craig, Gordon, Richard, Tom and Luke meant that even if one player got a run on his passing options were limited.  This defensive pressure meant the forwards could start passing the ball into space and run with it on the rebound.  Another pleasing element was the focus of the inners, wings and half line to use the width and hold the ball in attack out wide until options opened up across the ground. Some attacks still ran straight into the defence though, something to work on for next week.

2016 Hockey Season, Round 3

2016 Hockey Season, Round 3

Round 3 of the 2016 hockey season showed how dedicated we all are to our favourite sport – hot weather on Saturday, and completely the opposite on Sunday with very cold rainy conditions.

Kookas Mid-week Junior

Friday saw another fantastic game in the Kookas hockey season, with some great improvements in skills and teamwork leading to a very enjoyable game – Team Red vs Team Orange. Team Orange got on the scoreboard early with great focus on passing to team mates in space, and great use of the back pass by Zac and the two Sams. Cate and Ben led well to spaces, and were always ready to receive the ball and create attacks. Amy and Ella intercepted many forward moves and turned it to their team’s advantage. In the second half, Sam H put his dad, Dave under pressure to defend the goal but he did it well, passing out wide to avoid a score.

Under 8

Newtown Rebels vs Kardinia 3
This round saw the Rebels up against Kardinia 3.  Ruby (Strikers) stood in as a great replacement for Surry and Seb. Big thanks to Ruby! Hana came back from a week off and was full of confidence. She intercepted and ran the ball down the field and also was a star in defence, putting pressure on the Kardinia players. Georgie showed some fantastic all-round skills across the whole field, great stick work stopping and passing the ball. What an awesome effort for only her second game! The first half was very congested at times limiting our chances at finding space to pass and shoot for goals. However with Hamish moving into the middle from defence, he was able to move the ball down the field to set up play and enable his team mates to score.

In the second half, Scarlett and Mai put pressure on the opposition. They moved into position reading the play well which gave them the opportunity to work together to score for the Rebels. Hannah was very impressive with her strong passes from the sideline, trying to move the ball quickly but finding her best options as well. Hana was awarded our Best Team Player for her determination and super skills throughout the game. Well done Hana!

We need to continue working on moving forward with the attacking play and getting into a position that the ball can be passed to. Great game Rebels!

Newtown Spirit v Kardinia Kookaburras
Newtown Spirit was at full strength when it took to the field against Kardinia Kookaburras in Under 8 competition at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday. The team enjoyed most of the attack in the first half, where play was at times congested as players converged on the ball with enthusiasm. At half time Coach Kellie set her charges a task to help counteract the crowded play, urging her players to pass off immediately to a teammate rather than run with the ball. The tactic, with an emphasis on going wide, aimed to open up play and bypass the waiting cluster of opposition positioned directly in front of the ball.

Spirit, aiming to achieve `five passes’ between teammates each time, threw themselves into the second half. There were some rewarding examples of passing to well-positioned players as Spirit attempted to stick more to their positions in an effort to spread out the action. Meyah received the Best Team Player award for the match in recognition of her good play, positioning and ability to pass to teammates running into openings.

Newtown Raiders vs College Green

The best game of the hockey season so far for Newtown Raiders, with some great calling and better spreading out and use of space. Quick free passes were very effective, with Isabel placing the ball for Eliza-May to produce precision passes to team mates in good position. Jesse, Charlotte and Oscar kept sticks on the ground and were able to hassle the opposition and gain possession. Great movement in the centre by Cate helped to create doubt in the opposition minds, and she found some space to play the ball into attack, and with Amelia in great position at left wing there were some nice runs into the forward zone. Great work by all players. Best Team Player award to Eliza-May.

Newtown Strikers – Bye.

Thanks to Ruby, Amelia and Alex for filling in for other teams.

Newtown Rebels vs Bellarine Thunder 10-1

Newtown Rebels had another great game and another good win on Saturday at Stead Park against Bellarine Thunder, winning 10-1. Kiah (3), Olivia (2) and Basyl (1) were fantastic in attack in the first half. In the second half, Coach AJ swapped our attackers and mid-fielders, resulting in Mia, Patrick, Sam and Tejai scoring one goal each. Imogen did a great job as goalkeeper for the day and Brandon and Grace are doing really well to clear the ball out of our defensive half. The team is showing great use of strategic play out of defence, worthy of more experienced teams.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 0-10

Newtown Strikers worked hard in the first half to gain possession of the ball, with Declan covering many of Spirit’s avenues to attack, but crowded play meant Strikers were unable to turn back Spirit’s attacks and create their own forward moves. Great play by Nathan at full back, meeting the Spirit attack early and using team mates well from free passes out of defence. Michael, in goals for the second time, stopped many shots at goal by Spirit, but determination and great following up by Spirit saw them score on a number of occasions. Great running by Grace to gain possession of the ball, and good ball control created some forward thrust.  The second half saw some space open up in attack for Strikers, with Jack, Gil and Owen making some nice runs into the scoring zone for Strikers. Nathan and Kenna at full back continued to work well together and better use of wide passes in the midfield will produce improved chances for Strikers to create scoring opportunities. Best Team Player awards to Grace and Nathan.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 3-2

Newtown Strikers met Newtown Spirit in the U13s hockey season at Stead Park on Saturday morning. It was a close and really enjoyable game of hockey with the Spirit in front early and then the Strikers coming back to win 3-2.  A number of parents went out of their way to say how well the kids from both teams played and how the game was played in an excellent spirit.

The Strikers made great ground in implementing their team strategy of holding onto the ball for longer periods and running hard to create viable options for the player with the ball.  Very few times were there a ‘group’ of Strikers players camped around the ball.  This meant that the ball could go sideways and backwards more readily instead of the lower percentage option of playing straight through the defence.

Best players on the day were Miles, Ella and Oscar.  A special mention to Angus S who fronted up for his first game ever, in goal no less, and put in a terrific effort.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 2-3

This week was a hard fought game between the two Newtown U13 teams.  There was some excellent team play shown by Spirit players. We saw some nice through balls to Amelia by Will, Jarrett and Jamie which created some great opportunities.  Welcome to Charley who played her first game with Newtown and showed some great pace, and to Max who joined the Spirit team.  Both Newtown teams should be proud of their efforts and congratulations to Newtown Strikers who won 3:2.

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains 5-0

Round 3 brought a 5:0 victory to the Strikers against Golden Plains. Strong defence kept the opposition scoreless whilst the ability to capitalise on open play had the Strikers securing early goals in both halves. Goal scorers on the day were Hailey and Oscar with the most valuable player awarded to both Eneko and Lexie for their constantly good positioning.

 Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 1-1

U15 Spirit drew 1-1- with Torquay in a highly competitive encounter. Throughout the first half both sides had scoring opportunities denied by strong defence and goal keeping. Eventually the stalemate was broken with a goal by Jack, one of three Newtown Striker players filling in. The arm wrestle continued after the break with both teams continuing to defend strongly. Torquay eventually took advantage of an opening with a scrambled goal that levelled the score. With the game reaching the final 5 minutes both teams, perhaps sensing the post-match glucose reward, lifted the intensity and produced the most attacking hockey of the match. But again strong defence and outstanding goal keeping denied both teams from adding to the score line.

Newtown Strikers  vs Kardinia 1-1

The weather was certainly wild when we fronted up to Stead Park on Sunday morning to play Kardinia.  Coach refused to sit in the bunker on the opposite side of Pitch 1 due to the horizontal drizzle so we set up camp in front of the clubrooms.  Kardinia caught us by surprise early in the game to score a goal.  We had good drive through the middle with Erin intercepting many attacks and switching play through the middle.  Ollie laid some great tackles and provided good drive up the right side of the field.  Despite us controlling most of the play and holding the ball in our forward line for the bulk of the first half, the disciplined Kardinia defence played crowded the D every time we drove forward.  At half time it was clear that Kardinia were going to prevent us from getting clean shots at goal we so set our aim to earn some short corners in the second half.  We put this plan in to place and it paid off when Tom P scored a goal from a short.  Despite some great play in the second half we missed a few opportunities and unfortunately the win slipped away from us.

Newtown Spirit vs Saints 6-0

Round 3 arrived – sadly, back to regular hockey weather with howling wind and horizontal rain!! This was not a motivating feature for our team to start the match with. Already  7 players down, with 2 long term injuries amongst them, Spirit was able to scrounge enough to field a side of 10 to play today. Thanks to Nick P and Laurence A for stepping in for us!!

Slow start with hands needing to thaw out and running slow and response times not firing initially. Much of the play was up Spirit’s 25 in the first half of the game, however untidy set up and poor communication meant that Spirit was only able to score 1 goal (Dan – happy 100th Game Dan!!) before the half time break.
Don was not backwards in spelling out the faults in the game at half time, and the players were much more responsive and aggressive in their play during the second half, with the sun appearing to help thaw them out!!

Much better team efforts and communication during this latter part of the game allowed better passages of play and therefore more effective completion of opportunities, with goals being scored by Dan, Gabe, Cassidy, Jonah and Lach to finish the game 6:0. Saints sadly looked flat and depleted so were unable to provide an effective opposition for much of the game. Looking forward to having our crew back (well at least the uninjured ones!) next week, though more will be out due to Wildcats trials in Melbourne. Good luck to any of those players trialling for U15 and U17 teams for JSC.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay Tornadoes 8-1

A slightly relaxed start to the game vs Torquay’s 2nd team, the Tornadoes, saw the Falcons fall a goal behind early into the first half, but that was the extent of the scoring for the newly promoted Torquay Tornadoes. The Falcons bossed possession, and had the vast bulk of attacks during the rest of the game, with a multitude of short corners and open play attacks, due to well constructed ball and player movement, solid on the ball play, and silky skills saw the Falcons end the game with a convincing 8-1 victory. Goals to Will (3), Nick (4) and Adham (1).

Newtown Strikers vs Saints 0-8

Some might see an 8 nil loss as a thrashing but on the contrary, it was a well fought game with a number of short corners converted by a skilled opposition. While our team is still finding itself, I’m confident that if we continue to work at our short game and defensive accountability it won’t be long till we have a win on the board.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Saints 0-1

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 0-4

The Strikers had a well fought out game against Torquay in terrible conditions. Our midfield did a good job moving the ball up forward but we were unsuccessful in getting it in the goals. There were several great saves from our backline thanks to Emma P, Katie J, Meg K and Jen W. Unfortunately Torquay overran us in the end to score 4 to nil.

Division 2 Men

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 4-3

Newtown Spirit played off against Torquay’s D2 Men’s team this week.  The team as a whole played exceptionally well across the board.  Particularly given it was only our second game for the season and Torquay came out at a frenetic pace.  The U17 players are getting used to the strong standard of play.  We also welcomed Ahmer for his first Newtown Mens game.  Ian also celebrated his run with the team by scoring a goal.  This time Torquay beat us 4 goals to 3, but with stronger marking, being firmer on the ball and accurate hard passing we should get the points next time around.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Rebels vs Torquay 1-4

A full team and a full commitment from the start for the Rebels. Despite Torquay’s speed in the centre, Rebels marked well but were unlucky to concede 3 goals in the first half. The second half saw Rebels take the ball wide to avoid the centre with a lot of fast moves up the wings. A solid shot from Andy through to Shannon, was beautifully deflected by Kirsty to gain Rebels well earnt team goal. Great play in defence with Claire under constant attack in goals but well supported with Hil, Jan and Colleen.

2016 Hockey Season April 16/17

The 2016 Hockey season got off to a slightly wintry start on April 16, with some drizzly rain reminding us that hockey is basically a winter sport.  The weather didn’t put a damper on the effort and enjoyment shown by all the players though and there were some fantastic performances during the weekend.

Kookas Junior Program

The Kookas Junior program started well on Friday April 15, with new players showing great skills and game sense, leading to a very competitive game.  Cate and Ben worked well together making great leads to space to receive passes from Sam S. Amy and Ella  provided great support for team mates and helped move the ball into attack for their team. At the other end of the field, Zac showed great focus and defended well in front of goals. Good running and good use of the wings saw play switch and create attacks with Sam H, Grace and Jai all working hard to gain possession and threaten the defenders. The game finished as a 1-1 draw – a very even result. We look forward to the next game – see you at 4.30 pm on Friday at Lloyd Reserve.

Under 6 Joeys

We are delighted to have another group of children join our Joeys Under 6 program, and look forward to discovering some future Hockeyroos or Kookaburras players amongst them. We began the first session for the year in some slightly damp weather, but the players took it in their stride and worked on dribbling the ball, keeping control and avoiding the obstacles in the way.

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains

A drizzly morning welcomed the Strikers to their first game of the year. Welcome to Ruby, Alex S and Isla to the team and welcome back to Alex J, Amy, Amelia, Eliza and Emma. Some great passing skills and calling to each other was observed from the start of the game. Amy and Emma demonstrated their blocking and defensive skills, well done girls. Amelia and Alex J showed good strong long passes. Eliza and Isla kept attacking the goals and followed on after their shots to regain control of the ball for further attempt on goal. Thank you to Ruby for volunteering to assist with numbers for our fellow Newtown club and when returned to the team played a rotating role on the field from the wings to backing up the goal keeper. Well done to Alex S for jumping straight into your first game and keeping your eyes on the ball and nice defence in goals.

Remember to practise some backwards running during the week to help with the changing directions of the game.

Newtown Rebels vs Kardinia Kookaburras

A great start to the season for the Rebels. Congratulations to our first time players Scarlett, Hana and Hannah. Scarlett showed some amazing all-round skills, shooting, defending and passing. Both Hana and Hannah were impressive intercepting and passing through the midfield in the second half. Surry and Seb joined forces, running the ball from defence to the goals with several passes in between. Mai also showed great skills passing and sharing the ball with her team mates. A goal for the team to work towards next game is to spread out and remember their positions on the field. All in all a SUPER team effort.

Newtown Spirit v College Green
Newtown Spirit has started its 2016 campaign with enthusiasm and a handful of goals after meeting College Green in Under 8 competition at Lloyd Reserve on Saturday morning. It was a reunion for most of the Spirit crew after playing together the previous year. But team newcomers Charlotte and Lucy slotted right into the action, both showing great signs that they’ll be welcome additions to the line-up. Nate, at centre half forward, teamed well with centre Max in the first half. The duo threw themselves into the action, constantly driving the ball forwards towards goal and skilfully setting up Spirit’s many scoring opportunities.

After half time Meyah switched from goals to the forward line, didn’t stop running and showed her versatility in both attack and defence. Ruben provided opportunities out wide at the wing while Avah never backed down in a contest, fighting hard time and again for Spirit against a determined College Green. Green goaled several times despite desperate defence from the Newtown crew. Sometimes during the year Spirit players may be called upon to bolster opposition ranks to keep numbers as equal as possible during a match. Many thanks goes to Nate for filling this role in the second half of play on Saturday.

There were plenty of encouraging signs in Spirit’s first Under 8 match, with some great play between teammates as well as individual efforts. It will be a pleasure watching the team develop over the coming rounds.

Newtown Raiders vs Kardinia Kangaroos

The Newtown Raiders team began the first game of the season well, and with the loan of a player from Kardinia put up a strong midfield defence. Crowded playing conditions made it difficult to make any significant attacks in the first half, but there was some excellent passing between players with Eliza-May showing great ball control skills and approach to the ball. Charlotte was in the right position many times to hold up the Kardinia attacks and allow Newtown to regroup. The second half saw Isabel taking quick free hits and with Cait making space on the wing and Jesse in the centre we were able to make some headway and create attacks. Oscar switched to defence and made some great saves in front of goal.  A great first game by Raiders.

Newtown Rebels vs Geelong 8-0

The U11 Rebels kicked off the season with a good 8-0 win over Geelong. Scorers for the match were Luca (3), Basyl (2), Olivia (2), Kiah (1).

Geelong were a few players short, so thanks to Imogen, Basyl and Patrick for topping up the Geelong team during the game. The team handled the bigger pitch and quicker surface at Stead Park really well and there was good passing and communication from all of the team. Well done Patrick for having a go at goalkeeper in his first game.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia 6-2

And so it begins again….
The 2016 season started off in a slightly disjointed way with fill in coaches and almost a third of the team absent! With some help from fill in players we managed to field a team and took on Kardinia. As with most first games of a new season it was a slow start but a good start to the game. The new players to the Under 11 division did an outstanding job and some good passes saw Mia find the back board twice.

The second half was also a great half of hockey with a little more position play coming into action. Some good calling and looking up before passing again saw 3 further goals being scored by Angus and Grace. A great game was played by all on the team for the full 2 halves. Well done to you all.

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains 10-0

Both teams were undermanned, but Newtown were able to control the game from the beginning. Great ball control skills and focus on the ball saw Harry score 2 goals in the first 5 minutes. With Harry moved to the back line, other players stepped up and showed great determination and great teamwork. The forwards worked well to pick up the balls coming out of the midfield from Luca, Zoe and Declan, and turn them into great forward moves. Maggie was very efffective at right wing, scoring 3 goals for the game, so off to the defence for her. Owen in his first game showed lovely reverse stick skills and was in the right position on many occasions. Grace ran well to support team mates while Jack and Surry were quick to confront the opposition with sticks on the ground to gain possession and continue the attack. A lovely game from the Strikers team with accurate and controlled passing, great use of width in attack and lovely ball control skills. Quick free passes helped to keep Golden Plains under pressure. Well done everyone. Thanks to Surry for filling in from U8s.

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains Bellarine 3-0

The Strikers have opened their season strongly against  Golden Plains Bellarine with a 3-0 win.

It was a solid team performance with only 10 players against a younger opposition.  The highlights in the game were the use of passing and space in the field to create opportunities for attack and following half time, the direct implementation of strategies from the coach to good effect (particularly from Ella and Sam).  Kasey scored the first goal of the season with an excellent strike and then Harry followed up with two second half goals. All players were able to get an opportunity to pass the ball around and create what was an attractive game of hockey.

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 2-1

Well done to the U13 Spirit team who started their season with great support of one another right from the warm up.  With a fill in coach (Thanks AJ) and team manger, team members took charge themselves. Thanks to Tom (who came to watch) and Jamie for stepping up to lead the team with introductions and a warm up.  In the first half, Torquay were very strong and consistent in attack and the defence was put under a lot of pressure.  Ely and the defense held strong and did not let in any goals.  Newtown Spirit started strong in the second half and some great passing and passages of play emerged.  All of a sudden we were 2:0 up with Jamie having scored both goals, well supported by Jarrett.  Torquay fought back and scored a goal and again the team held strong in defence to hold on for the 2:1 win.  A great start to the season.

Newtown Spirit vs Bellarine 5 – 1

Newtown Spirit started the season with a 5 -1 1 win over Bellarine. Despite leading 2-1 at half-time, thanks to goals from Amber and Miles, the first half would be best described as rusty, with play continually breaking down as we attempted to attack through the centre. Following the coaches (Nico and Brendan) instructions to look for options out wide, the team clicked into gear after the break creating numerous scoring chances. Some resolute defence from Bellarine managed to restrict the scoring to three second-half goals (two more to Miles and one to Tom with customary celebration). Overall it was a strong team performance well led by Lachie in defence, Max in goal and Amber and Miles in attack.

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia 5-1

2016 Hockey Season is off and running, and if any of us were in any doubt that Hockey is a winter sport this morning reminded us with cold and wet conditions. The U15 Strikers have started the season on a high note with a 5 to 1 victory over Kardinia at Stead Park this morning.

Playing well as a team from the outset they set about moving the ball well up the field making good us of long passes and capitalising on gaps left open by the oppositions to push home 3 goals off running play. Organising them selves to make the most out of short corner opportunities the Strikers converted 2 into goals. Todays goals came from Hailey and Jack with one a piece and Oscar taking a hat trick. Player of the match was awarded to Jack for his efforts in centre, moving the ball to open players and making the most of turn overs and interceptions.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Falcons 7-2

Our first game back for the Strikers saw a good mixture of old and new players. Our forwards Emma, Grace and Nicole had a lot of the play up front with great skills and running onto the ball to score 3 goals in the first half. There were some handy skills on show from Alice, Elese and Tiahna to stop the ball coming down into defense and get it back up front. Meg, Sam and Penny held down the fort in defense with some great stopages. We finished off the game 7-2 which is a good start to the season.

Newtown Spirit vs Corio 2-5

Division 2 Women

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Rebels 5-2

Mild conditions saw the return of the usual suspects, former stars and a dynamic duo of new returnees to the game in our opening match of the season. A huge welcome to Georgie and Eliza who are returning to hockey after a long break. Obviously nothing was lost during that time as they starred on the left side in attack throughout the game. Spirit got off to a quick start with sharp plays from Katey, Georgie and Eliza with all 3 rewarded with goals in the first half.

Jacinta showed why she was voted most consistent player last season with a great return to form in defence, breaking down many of Rebel’s advances along with Andy. Hillary and Jan fended off many attacks, with strong clearances out. Again Claire was invaluable in goals. The second half saw Rebels fire up and advance their attack with 2 goals. The right side of the forward line returned fire with both Kirsty and Nicola scoring in the second half.

Hope everyone recovers by next weekend!

Newtown Rebels vs Newtown Spirit 2-5

A great game by an undermanned Newtown Rebels team. Spirit’s weight of numbers gave them plenty of attack in the first half, but great defence and sideways clearances by Colleen halted many of their attacks. Midfield play was solid with Amy, Kellie and Tracey making good interceptions and great clearances. Rachel, Amy and Monique worked well together in the first half and great leads to space combined with good passing saw Rebels create some attack. With the addition of an extra player in the second half, Rebels were able to gain some extra impetus and Peta helped to push the ball forward where Rachel’s never say die endeavour and skill saw her create attacks and score 2 goals. With the score 0-3 at half time, the second half was a tied game – a great effort by Rebels still with only 9 players.
