Newtown City Hockey Club Inc. Code of Conduct
Vision Statement
To provide a safe, healthy, inclusive and welcoming environment for all people to participate in the sport of hockey.
Code of Conduct
This Code of Conduct has been modeled on the Australian Sports Commission’s Junior Sport Code of Behaviour, and the New South Wales Sport and Recreation Code of Conduct.
Players
• At all times play by the rules of hockey.
• Never argue with an official. The official’s decision is final. If you disagree, have your captain approach an official during a break or after the completion of the match.
• Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials, players or spectators is not acceptable, nor tolerated.
• Be a good sport. Applaud all good plays, whether they are made by your team or the opposition. Be a good role model for other players and spectators.
• Treat all participants as you would like to be treated. Do not bully or take unfair advantage of another competitor.
• Co-operate with your coach, team-mates, officials and opponents.
• Display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat.
• Participate for your own enjoyment and benefit.
• Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants, regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
• No player shall take the field in an intoxicated state, nor will consume alcohol whilst participating in a game.
• Consistently project a favorable image of the sport of hockey and, in particular, the Newtown City Hockey Club.
• Senior players are to be positive role models for junior players and should be conscious of how they act in the presence of junior members.
Parents
• Encourage children to participate in hockey for their own enjoyment, do not force them.
• Focus on your child’s efforts and performance rather than whether they win or lose.
• Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a competition. Always keep comments positive.
• Do not use bad language or harass players, coaches or officials.
• Encourage children to play according to the rules of hockey and to settle disagreements without resorting to hostility or violence.
• Be a positive role model to your child. Appreciate good performance and skillful plays by all participants.
• Support all activities to remove verbal and physical abuse from the sport of hockey.
• Respect official’s decisions and teach children to do likewise.
• Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials and administrators. Offer assistance in any way you feel you are able.
• Enjoy the camaraderie of sport by socialising with other parents.
• Consistently project a favorable image of the sport of hockey and, in particular, the Newtown City Hockey Club.
Coaches
• Promote participation for pleasure. Winning is only part of the enjoyment.
• Never ridicule or yell at players for making a mistake or not winning.
• Be reasonable in your demands on player’s time, energy and enthusiasm.
• Operate within the rules and spirit of hockey and teach your players to do the same.
• Ensure that the time players spend with you is a positive one. All players deserve equal opportunity and attention.
• Avoid overplaying the talented players. Give all players equal time on the field.
• Do not use bad language or harass players, coaches or officials.
• Ensure all equipment meets the appropriate safety standard and all players wear the appropriate safety gear. A first aid kit is mandatory at all games.
• Display control, respect and professionalism to all involved in hockey. This includes opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators. Encourage the players to do the same. The player’s on-field behaviour is your responsibility.
• Show concern and caution towards sick and injured players. Follow the advice of a physician when determining whether an injured player is ready to recommence training or competition.
• Any physical contact with a young person should be appropriate to the situation and necessary for the player’s skill development.
• Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every player, regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
• Any information gathered during your working relationship with players is confidential and shall not be passed on without the express permission of individual players.
• Consistently project a favorable image of the sport of hockey and, in particular, the Newtown City Hockey Club.
Officials
• Place the safety and welfare of players above all else.
• Compliment and encourage all participants.
• Be consistent, objective and courteous when making decisions.
• Accept responsibility for your actions and decisions.
• Condemn unsporting behaviour and promote respect for all opponents.
• Emphasise the spirit of the game rather than the errors.
• Be a good sport yourself.
• Keep up to date with the latest “Laws of the Game”, trends and principles in officiating. Undertake any training that is appropriate for your level of development.
• Your behaviour should be positive and supportive.
• Display a professional attitude on the field and wear the appropriate uniform.
• Refrain from any form of personal abuse towards players, spectators or other officials.
• Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every player, regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
• Consistently project a favorable image of the sport of hockey and, in particular, the Newtown City Hockey Club.
Spectators
• Applaud good performances and efforts from all individuals and teams. Congratulate all participants on their performance, regardless of the game’s outcome.
• Respect the decisions of officials and teach others to do the same.
• Never ridicule or scold a player for making a mistake. Positive comments are motivational.
• Condemn the use of violence in any form, whether it is spectators, coaches, officials or players.
• Show respect for your team’s opponents.
• Encourage players to follow the rules and the official’s decisions.
• Do not use foul language, sledge or harass players, coaches or officials.
• Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every player, regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
