Saturday Social Hockey

Saturday Social Hockey

Newtown City Hockey Club aims to help everyone participate in and enjoy the game of hockey.

Barriers such as age, lack of fitness or cost may prevent some from enjoying this great game, so we are offering the perfect opportunity to play without worrying about these things.

Social hockey game

The club’s Saturday Social hockey programme provides a fun and inclusive environment to play hockey at a minimal cost regardless of previous experience. Players include men, women, boys and girls, experienced players, ex-players and beginners—all are welcome.

If you haven’t played before, it’s a great chance to learn some skills in a non-competitive atmosphere with a focus on enjoyment and participation.

The enjoyable atmosphere then continues with post-match socialising, aided by afternoon tea and friendly banter.

Games are played with two halves of 25 minutes each but you can take a break any time you need a rest. The field size depends on the number of players who are present, with a half field game being common. This means less physical wear and tear and less running.

Games are played on a quality grass surface at King Lloyd Reserve, Windsor Rd, Newtown at 12.30 pm on Saturday afternoon. The programme follows the usual winter season: beginning in April and running until the end of September. Come whenever you can, every week or just occasionally.

Fees are low to cover the cost of insurance and basic club membership. Uniform is not required; just wear something comfortable to run in, including some shoes with reasonable grip. Shinguards and mouthguards are recommended. Bring your own stick if you have one or we can loan you one.

See you on Saturday!

Fees are low – to cover the cost of insurance and basic club membership.

Saturday Social Hockey Is Starting

“All things Old are New Again” aka “On the grass”

The Newtown City Hockey Club aims to offer as many people as possible the opportunity to play hockey. Over the years many players have stopped playing for a variety of reasons, but would possibly still like to play hockey.

Reasons for not playing may include travelling time, irregular match times, injuries, lack of social atmosphere – and of course – cost of playing.

If any of these ring true for you, then we have an offer for you.

Come and join the Newtown City Hockey Club in its “Saturday Social” hockey programme.  This “competition” will be based on an old style grass surface, with games played at King Lloyd Reserve, Windsor Rd, Newtown on Saturday afternoon – just like the old days.   The grass surface at Lloyd Reserve is of a very high standard so none of the mud and potholes of the “old days”.

The features of the programme include:
* 2 halves of 25 minutes each
* matches played at 1.30 or 3.00 pm – depending on the number of interested players
* field marked at 80% of normal field size – less physical wear and tear and less running
* mixed men’s and women’s teams – depending on interest
* minimal fees – $20 – for membership of the Club to provide insurance cover etc.

The programme will initially be run on the following days, but can be extended if there is sufficient interest.
*  Saturday May 11
*  Saturday May 18
*  Saturday May 25
* Saturday June 1

This is a fairly informal program so if you are not able to come every week, that’s no problem.  The one-off fee of $20 would cover the initial 4 weeks of the programme – and any extension of the programme for this season.

Equipment required:  mouthguard, shinpads, hockey stick, comfortable clothing to run in.    We have some hockey sticks we can loan to participants if you haven’t got your stick any more.

This opportunity is not intended to be a replacement for the competition at Stead Park for those who want the full experience of competitive hockey.

If this is of interest to you or to someone you know, we’d love to see you “On the
Grass”.   Let us know if you are interested – or just turn up this Saturday May 11 at about 1 pm.

Saturday Social – Classic Grass Hockey

“All things Old are New Again” aka “On the grass”

The Newtown City Hockey Club aims to offer as many people as possible the opportunity to play this great sport of hockey. We know that over the years many players have stopped playing for any number of reasons, which may include travel times, lack of regular match times, physical wear and tear from playing matches on synthetic surface, cost.

So we are offering any interested male and female players (both past players and new players) the opportunity to join us in a socially based environment to play a fun game of hockey. This “competition” will be based on the old classic grass surface, with games to be played at King Lloyd Reserve, Windsor Rd, Newtown on Saturday afternoon – just like the old days. Rules and structure are flexible at this stage until we can gather some interest, but we suggest that games will be two halves of 30 minutes, with a reduced field size. We are happy to receive comments or suggestions.

The programme will commence at 1.30 pm on Saturday May 4, and will continue on May 11, 18 and 25. If there is sufficient interest, the programme may be extended to extra days and / or an extra match at 3.00 pm.

Fees will be minimal, designed to cover costs – generally membership of the Club so as to provide insurance cover etc.

This opportunity is not intended to replace any participation in the Hockey Geelong competition at Stead Park. You may want to play both – or you may find this a great way to play a great sport at a regular time and place.

Is this of interest? We’d love to see you “On the Grass”. Contact Peter Stuart, ph 0417 280118 or p.c.stuart@bigpond.com.au for more details. You can let us know you are interested – or just turn up on May 4.

2021 Hockey Season

2021 Hockey Season

After a very interrupted 2020 hockey season, it looks like the 2021 season is on track to a more normal path.

The 2021 Geelong Hockey Association season will begin officially with matches on April 24/25, and we are looking forward to a good year.

The advent of the COVID pandemic has interrupted the usual acquisition of new members and the flow of players on to the next age group. This has resulted in a reduced number of teams entered by our club and by other clubs. Overall, we can still be relatively pleased with the Club’s position at this stage.

We have teams in:

  • Under 8 Mixed – 2 teams
  • Under 10 Mixed – 1 team
  • Under 12 Mixed – 2 teams
  • Under 14 Mixed – 2 teams
  • Under 17 Mixed – 2 teams
  • Division 2 Men – 1 team
  • Division 1 Women – 1 team
  • Division 2 Women – 1 team

We will also continue the Under 6 Joeys program and the Saturday Social hockey program, which were not able to operate in 2020.

2021 will be the beginning of a recovery phase, which may last for a number of years. However, we are working hard to regroup and welcome both new and old members for the 2021 hockey season.

Our first Hookin2Hockey program for the year has shown very pleasing results, with 26 children having participated during the program, and 20 of these having registered for Hookin2Hockey. Registering for the program provides insurance benefits and membership of Hockey Victoria for the year, resulting in a cost saving for many if they decide to join a team and continue playing hockey. The first program finishes on March 30, but a further program will commence on May 18.

We are very pleased to welcome senior members back to play too, including 8 new or returning members. We greatly appreciate the patience and continued interest in participating from senior players, after we were unable to provide a senior competition at all for the 2020 hockey season.

We are always happy to welcome new members, regardless of age (3 to 65+), experience or skill level and we don’t care how long it is since you last played.

We are especially glad to welcome Astrid Lempriere, who joined us for our senior and U17 practice matches last week, and expressed her preference for playing goalkeeper. Hooray! It’s often hard to find someone for this valuable position. Astrid says she hasn’t played for 17 years and felt quite rusty, but she looked in great form.

There was a joyful atmosphere at the practice match, with comments about how nice it was to be back playing hockey, and to see people watching. Thanks to all those who participated, and who helped with the BBQ afterwards.

The matches allowed the coaches (Maggie, Paul, Carl, David and Gordon) to get a feel for how the season might go, and how the teams might be selected.
