Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 8-2

The Strikers started the game strong this round, with Lily starting fast and scoring two goals in the first 5 minutes of the game – great running Lily! Torquay tried to respond however some strong defense from Harry had the ball back down our end for a short corner, and another goal on the board came from Georgia.

Torquay continued to search for a goal, but Elspeth was always there to keep the ball out of the net, and Will was doing some great work in the middle to intercept their passes and get the ball back into our D. Right before the half time break Torquay managed to break through for a goal, with the score 4-1 at the break.

In the second half Torquay were out fast and scored the first goal, however that would be their last for the game with Elspeth continuing to frustrate their attempts to score.

Lily soon found the net again too for her fourth goal, and then it was the Zach show! With some great support from Harry and Georgia, Zach added three more goals to our score! Strikers won the game, 8-2.

Newtown Spirit vs Corio 2-2

In their second match of the season, Newtown Spirit delivered another exciting performance, showing determination, teamwork, and growing confidence across the field in a 2-all draw against Corio.

The game began with Corio earning an early short corner, but Miriam responded with excellent defensive pressure, clearing the danger with calm control. Charlie followed with a strong run down the right wing, setting the tone early. Toby was steady and composed through the middle, delivering solid hits that helped transition Newtown into attack.

A loose ball from Corio created Newtown’s first real scoring opportunity, and after building pressure, Charlie burst through the middle of the field and slotted the opening goal, outpacing the defence. Moments later, Eliza took a brilliant run straight down the middle and scored Newtown’s second goal, showcasing her speed and control. Both players continued to threaten, with late chances from Charlie and Eliza just narrowly missing the target.

In defence, Albert and Rupert combined well to block Corio’s attempts late in the half, with Rupert in particular making smart decisions under pressure and clearing the ball out wide.

The second half started fast, with Corio scoring two quick goals to even things up. Newtown didn’t panic—Eliza launched another run down the right wing, and Charlie came close again after a short corner.

At the back, Miriam and Albert continued to anchor the defence with confidence, supported by Rupert’s consistent work rate. The whole team held firm in the final minutes to ensure the match finished in a well-earned draw.

A strong all-round performance from the team, with each player contributing to a game full of skill, teamwork, and effort. The season is off to a fantastic start!

Under 10 Lloyd Reserve

Newtown Dynamos vs Newtown Jets 11-0

For round 2, we had Flynn, Mathilda, Florence, Georgia and Michaela playing for Dynamos and we played Jets on a lovely sunny Saturday at Lloyd Reserve for U10s.

Flynn & Georgia both got an amazing 4 goals each with some great support from Michaela and Florence, who both notched up some goals also.

Good to see the teams starting to work together and passing. Speedy running by Mathilda to get down the pitch. With some nice defensive work by the Jets.

Looking forward to 2025 season.

Newtown Rockets vs Newtown Rebels 4-1

This was a fantastic game for Rockets, with great teamwork and excellent passing. With only 4 players available, there was plenty of space to pass back and then wide to bypass the opposition. The first goal resulted from a back pass to Nora, followed by a square pass to Alex and then a through pass which found Tully in the perfect spot to step into the circle and score.

Great tackling and persistence in approaching the Rebels forward moves from Alex and David saw Rockets win possession on many occasions and strong and accurate passing kept Rockets in the game.

Tully was in the right spot and in space on many occasions and ended the game with 3 goals. Great ball control allowed Alex to push the play forward and score. Nora was solid in defence, positioned well to cut off forward moves from Rebels and was able to push forward in the latter part of the game. Great passing from David continued the super teamwork and created opportunities for Rockets.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 0-5

Torquay is always a tough opponent and this game was no exception. We brought a strong defensive mindset but Torquay were relentless in attack, scoring twice in the first half and a further three times in the second half. Dot and Vicky played beautifully in their respective positions, always finding space and picking up an opposition player. We saw some great linking passes between Dot, Vicki, Felix, Harry and Thomas as a result, especially late in the first half and early in the second half, but we couldn’t quite find the goal up forward.

Edward had an absolute blinder as keeper, saving many many goals – especially in the second half when his feet were flying everywhere! Fraser was absolutely solid as a rock in defence for the whole game. Thanks to Elwood, Oliver, Paddy and Mitchell from U12 Spirit for helping us field a full team after playing a full match themselves! And special thanks to James for filling in as coach this week.

Newtown Spirit vs Corio 0-6

Yet again facing a formidable opposition, but this time team Spirit was not nervous.

Similar to last week, the first half was low scoring with great play throughout the defence and midfield. When the ball reached the forward line there was no one to be seen. We can’t keep playing with a defensive mindset; we have the ability but we just need to believe.

This week we face the Strikers, friends at training but Saturday we are frenemies!

Looking forward to a great game – Go Spirit!

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 0-2

Despite a 2-0 defeat to a strong Torquay side, there were plenty of positives to take from this performance for the U14 Strikers. Most notably, the improvement in application and effort from previous weeks was clear to see. Every player showed greater focus, energy, and commitment across the pitch, which made this one of our most competitive outings of the season so far.

There were moments of real brilliance in our passing game, and when we strung the ball together with purpose and pace, we looked genuinely dangerous. One or two flowing moves through midfield and into attack had the opposition on the back foot and demonstrated what this team is capable of when playing with confidence and control.

Alex L, Mitchell B and Jack F  were all tireless in midfield, helping to link play and push the team forward at every opportunity. Lucas, Eva, Lily , Alexandra H, Jack P and Elizabeth C all showed great discipline in defence, making several key tackles and clearances under pressure. In goal, Albie made some crucial saves to keep the game within reach, while Chelsea C , Chelsea O, Emily S , Matthew and Harriet fought well and brought creativity and drive in the attacking third.

While the result didn’t go our way, this was a step in the right direction. With continued hard work and belief, results will start to follow. Well done to all the players for their attitude and improvement—let’s build on this performance next week.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 0-6

This week the Strikers were up against Torquay, and we had a few more of our regular players out on the pitch as well as coach Mike. We were ready to go!

Off to a strong start, the Strikers had the ball up our end early, with Ivy, Jess and Parker all having opportunities to score, but without luck.

Ivy almost got our first goal in a penalty 1v1, managing to get around their goalie to shoot… but a lucky last-minute stretch from their goalie managed to keep it out. Some great skills on display!

Going into Q2 and neither team had scored. Torquay were first to score in a 1v1, and then despite some good defensive work from Cormac and great saves from Kayden, Torquay were able to get another one through. Half time score: 0-2.

In the third quarter things were close again. An early save from Kayden, and some great efforts from Sofia in the middle to get the ball back on to our sticks. Parker had another shot on goal that their keeper just managed to keep out, and then Torquay were able to score a single goal for the quarter.

Without any extra players to rotate, the Strikers had some tired legs going in to the final quarter. Torquay scored early, and then an unfortunate injury for Parker saw him off for the remainder of the game – despite a valiant effort to get back on the pitch. With a player down Torquay had the upper hand, scoring two more goals and finishing the scoreboard at 0-6.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Saints 1-1

On a particularly warm Sunday afternoon, we were treated to an edge of your seat showdown between two evenly matched teams, which saw the final result come down to an after the siren short corner conversion.

Throughout the game, Newtown were able to absorb a significant amount of offensive pressure, with multiple short corners expertly blocked by our backline and a number of stunning saves from Rachel in goals.

Our midfield did a fantastic job of moving the ball up the field to provide our forwards with a number of scoring opportunities, with Kim being able to score a goal to put us up 1 – 0 near the end of the game.

Unfortunately, after shutting down a number of short corners, Saints were able to score an equalizing goal after the final whistle.

While it would have been nice to come away with the win, it was a great indication of the team’s potential and gives us something to build upon over the coming weeks.

Fantastic game everyone, you should all be proud of your efforts.

Division 2 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay Tornadoes 0-4

Division 2 Women

Newtown Strikers vs Saints 3-2

We welcomed a few new players to the team this week, and they all slotted in beautifully. The game was relatively even in the midfield in the first half, leading to more work for our defence team, but Tash, Kirsty and Kayla handled it well, not letting Saints pose any major threats.

Good ball control and speed in the forward line saw Audrey, Clarice and Lara create plenty of attack for Strikers, with some good shots at goal being blocked at the last stage. Zali, Hannah and Andie in the midfield cut off many of Saints forward moves and marked opponents well.

Kristy and Peta used the space in attack well and created opportunities to receive the ball from the defence and push forward to the circle. Great position and anticipation saw Lara score 2 goals for the game, one of these with not long to go in the game. Kristy scored the other after making great leads all game to create opportunities in the circle. Great work everone.
