2024 Hockey Season – August 3 & 4

There were some fantastic games from our teams this week! A mix of high scoring games, draws and close games, with great improvement from U14 Strikers and D1 Women.

D1 Women’s score would have been even closer if Ruby’s goal had been judged hit from inside the circle! We need a VAR!

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 1-5

Torquay defeated Newtown 5-1 in a match where Newtown’s effort far outweighed the scoreline. Despite having only five players to Torquay’s seven, Newtown played a really strong game. Quick off the mark, Henry’s pass to Dot set up James for an early goal. In defence, Edward, Henry, and James were crucial, preventing several goals and defending short corners effectively. Dot and Isla also stood out, with Dot making a significant impact on the wing and Isla, in only her second game, showing impressive defensive skills.

In the second half, James’ dynamic running and Edward’s strong passes kept Newtown competitive, despite some goals sneaking through for Torquay. Although a late pass from Edward to Dot almost resulted in another goal, Torquay’s persistent play secured their win. Newtown’s performance was commendable given the circumstances – it felt like there were 15 Newtown players out there, rather than 5!

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Rebels 7-6

Newtown Spirit played Newtown Rebels on a pleasant Saturday morning. It was a spirited, attacking and high scoring game. Rebels got off to a strong start and were in the lead early, but Spirit hung in. It was 4-4 at half time.

In the second half, Spirit took the lead and escaped with a narrow victory. With seconds to go, Rebels entered the circle but were beaten by the whistle. Hugo and Hayden scored. All players played well. Thanks to Leon, Mathilda, Leila and Saskia for playing half a game with Dynamos.

Newtown Rebels vs Newtown Spirit 6-7

Newtown Dynamos vs Newtown Rockets 8-6

Plenty of goals were scored in today’s match.

With two substitute players the Dynamos fielded a team that were dominant in the first half. Seven goals were scored. Flynn managed four and Edward three. A great attacking team was displayed. Kiarah yet again demonstrated her determined tackling approach. Eliza and Flynn worked well in the forward line and were seen discussing strategy (we think) a few times. Rockets also fought hard and never gave up.

In the second half the game dynamics changed with Rockets staging a strong comeback. Claire had inspired the Rockets as their passing game was excellent and exploited any weakness shown by Dynamos. Edward was very strong in defense for Dynamos however he was given a hard time by the Rockets, and had to face 2-3 forwards bearing down on him multiple times.

The Rockets backline player stopped the majority of the Dynamos forward plays allowing her team to get goals and catch up. Albert was doing a marvellous job of tagging Rockets players, setting an example for the rest of the team to follow.

Six goals were scored in the second half by the Rockets and they narrowly missed out on having seven as the seventh was scored split seconds after the game officially ended. One further goal was added to the Dynamos tally by Flynn.

Newtown Rockets vs Newtown Dynamos 6-8

This week we had the following players: Austin, Elspeth, Harry, Lily, Nora, and Ryder. We had some help from Saskia for the second half.

The first half we were a little unfocused and not looking for spaces and backing each other up. This meant that Dynamos scored quite a few goals as they snuck past our defence.

After half time and a good chat with Claire the team smashed it, scoring 6 goals! Ryder scored 3, and Austin, Lily and Nora all scored one goal each (this was also Nora’s first goal of the season). Elspeth was amazing as goalie stopping so many balls from getting through and stopping Dynamos from scoring in the second half. Harry was passing so well to the rest of the team.

Great game Rockets!

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 7-0

Despite being a few players down the team still managed to pull off a big win, scoring 7 goals to nil. It was great to see the improvement that players have made with their skills and understanding of the game plan.

Well done to Albie who scored his first goal for Strikers. Once again our team passing was a feature of the game resulting in goals to Mitch, Joey, Eddy, Fraser and Jack.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia 6-0

Spirit were in an entertaining mood against Kardinia. The first half Spirit had all the territory and possession. Multiple short corners finally paid off with Chelsea scoring. Ved and Alex also scored good team goals before half time.

The second half was much the same. Chelsea scoring off another short corner and Alex scoring two more from close range. Kardinia had a surge late in the game but Harriett saved two or three shots on target and Ed filling in from the under 10s also doing well in defence. The most complete Spirit performance all year with all 11 players contributing and playing well Spirit 6-0 Kardinia.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 2-2

U14 Strikers were up against Torquay this week with another draw between two evenly matched sides!

The first half got off to a good start, with Jess scoring a goal early off a great pass from Oliver. Torquay fought back hard to try and equalise with 4 or 5 short corners during the remainder of the half. They were without luck – Ruby in goalie this week with some great saves and our fearless defenders blocking the rest!

Shout-out to our U12 friends who played with us again this week: Ved and Chelsea. Ved and Lucas teamed up for some great passes back and forth late in the first half to get the ball back up end.

Torquay came out strong in the second half with two unanswered goals, whilst both Lucy and Oliver were just unlucky with their attempts to score a goal. With 8 minutes to go Jess found the back of the net – scores level at 2 all!

The last 8 mins felt like 18 (just ask the U17s who wanted to get on the pitch for their game!!) with the ball going from one end to the other yet neither team scoring. Oliver came close to goal right before the whistle ended the game – scores level, some bruised knees, and another draw against Torquay.

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia White 3-2

In a challenging game against a determined opponent, Newtown faced off against a Kardinia team that, despite being two players short, showed enormous fight.

Newtown played the first half without a goalie, and despite some great defensive efforts from Winter, Kayla, and Amelia, Kardinia managed to score the first two goals, going up 2-0. Newtown struggled to create space as Kardinia worked hard defensively, but Zac eventually broke through with a goal from a short corner, narrowing the gap.

At halftime, Ruby, playing her first game for the Strikers this year, donned the goalie gear and stepped into the goals, making some crucial saves. In the fourth quarter, Newtown managed to score the game equalizer, and with just 30 seconds left, Zac found space in the circle and finished with a great goal to give Newtown a narrow win.

It was good to secure the win against a resilient and undermanned opponent. Newtown will have plenty to work on this week as they build towards the finals.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 3-6

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Saints Red 1-1

Newtown Falcons played Saints Red on Sunday afternoon. It was a spirited game. Basyl, Hamish and Nate created lots of attacking play and won several short corners. We were close to scoring but unable to convert in the first half. But we played strongly in defence, so were 0-0 at half time.

Saints scored in the second half against the run of play. With a few minutes to go, we won a corner and scored with a hard hit from Adam to the top of the backboards. It was 1-1 and a draw at full time.
