The junior teams were back on the pitch this week and ready to play again!

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 1-7
U/10 Strikers had a fantastic match against top team Torquay. Despite having less players on the pitch (we had 9, Torquay had 12) it was a really even match … right up until the end! Paige and Georgia again combined brilliantly in attack to score in the first half, whilst Tom’s excellent (and entertaining!!) efforts in defence kept the score at 2-1 at half time. Great effort by the whole team to keep us in it during the second half, but tired legs saw the floodgates open towards the end of the match. Final score was 7-1.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia 2-1
An exciting game played between two even sides. Kardinia went up early with a well constructed goal and had the upper hand in the 1st half.
The 2nd half saw Spirit lift their energy. The majority of the second half was played in Spirit’s attacking half. Chelsea levelled up the scores after 3 or 4 shots were defended by the goal keeper. Then with 3 minutes to play Jessica got into a great position to score. Exciting finish to an entertaining game. Spirit 2-1 Kardinia.
Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 0-9
The Strikers lost to Torquay 9-0 however there was some fantastic team and individual play in Round 9. It was hard to believe that it was Parker’s first game of hockey as he made some good tackles and hits. Eva and Audrey worked hard together to defend the goal circle and Poppy, Kassidy and Mitchell did well to try to push the ball up the field.
Connor made a great move towards the goal in the second half but it wasn’t quite enough to finish it off for the team. The Strikers are to be commended on their positive attitude and their hard work in improving their play each week.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 2-5
It was nice to have everyone that is listed on the U17 Spirit team playing. A full side that played with lots of heart, especially in the second half.
The first half of the game saw defence working hard to keep Strikers at three goals. There were three short corners where Madden did a great job defending the goals. Ruby was integral to the backline working hard to support Madden. Great running by Charlotte saw her take the ball into our forward and Nate scored soon after. By the end of the first half Georgia was on the sideline after a strong ball hit her left shin. Scores were Strikers 3 Spirit 1.
The second half was a great game of hockey to watch. Spirit were creating space which saw the ball move and spend more time in their forward. Nate took a wide passage to Leo who passed it into Kayla, who passed it onto Charlotte who took the ball again into our forward. Great positioning and passing by Hamish and Scarlet provided great opportunities for the team.
Max had another great run forward, had a couple of shots at goal that were defended well, however, Hugh was in the perfect position to score our second goal. Felix applied pressure and tackles at the right time to get the ball forward towards Tessa, Kayla and Georgia. Within the last minutes Karla did an amazing job saving a goal. Another ball to the other shin saw Georgia miss the last five minutes of the game.
A great game after the winter break. Player’s player was Nate, closely followed by Madden.
Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 5-2
Today was the first day after the break and we were without a coach. The managers stepped up to help out but the team were already sorted.
Thank you to Zac for filling in on the team and there was even a bench of players.
Lara and Chloe were going to the post and wings. Tom and Luka joined up and made it very difficult to get through. Alex, Anya and Amelia had the back covered and calling shots out. What can we say about Mai, who was fantastic in goals. Saving shots that came her way. Brandon and Grace had each other backs and supported each other. Will and Zac joined forces and found the back of the net. Lastly Serena made her way back onto the pitch after having time off and also found the back of the net on a deflected shot.
Well done and a deserved win.
