Match reports this week show some mixed results, but no lack of effort by our players. The D2 Men’s Spirit team are showing the benefit of persistence and adding up the wins in the latter half of the season.
Division 1 Men
Newtown Falcons vs Saints Black 1-2
A tough game vs Saints Black, with a number of players missing, but it was still a strong lineup for the Falcons. Unfortunately we went 1-0 down early, and didnt seem to switch on for the most part of the game, which ended up in a disappointing 2-1 loss.
Division 1 Women
Newtown Falcons vs Saints 3-1
This was a sketchy game, with the dry pitch surface making it difficult to play a flow on style of game. Newtown had the majority of the play in the first half, but found it difficult to find space in attack, and the score was 1-1 at half time. Saints began to gain some ground in the second half, but strong drive off the back line by Shelby, Nerida and Meg prevented any real domination by Saints, and allowed Newtown to score 2 more. Goals to Katey (2) and Rachel (1).
Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 1-17
A very tough game for Strikers this week, with Torquay having the benefit of some very experienced players.
Division 2 Men
Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 3-1
Despite looking like not being able to put a full team together before the weekend, come match time on Saturday evening we were able to field a strong team with substitutes against Torquay. Thank you to those that changed plans, returned from sickness or had their first game in the seniors. Torquay were not able to do the same by game time so played a few short. Given those that did play for Torquay were some of the best from the club they did score first before Strikers evened up going into half time. With the help of first time senior players Jonah and Thomas from about half way through the second half we started using our extra numbers and let the ball do most of the work. Strikers ended up with 3 goals and Torquay didn’t manage another one after their first.
Newtown Spirit vs Geelong Blue 5-1
Division 2 Women
Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 1-3
Under lights Newtown Spirit took to the field against a fast and youthful Torquay. The first half saw even play by both sides and at half time the score was 1-2. The second half was more intense with Spirit having more opportunities to score but were unable to. Unfortunately Torquay kept on the attack and were able to score 1 more goal. Thanks to those who filled in for the game.
Newtown Rebels vs Corio 3-7
A great game by Rebels against a very skilled and speedy Corio team. Great defence by Colleen and Ally (playing her first game in 14 years), with Meg and Tracey holding up the Corio midfield on many occasions. An excellent pass by Jenny along the right wing and some great passing on the forward line by Erin, Erin and Chloe saw us score our first goal. Corio’s lack of a goalkeeper made the task easier but it was fantastic passing on the forward line which created the opportunities, finished off well by players in great position. Well done everyone!
