Results Round 2 Senior Competition

Division 1

WOMEN – Newtown Falcons vs Bellarine 4-2

This week’s game was another good game. The girls worked well as a team with a lot of talking on the field. At half time we had 2 goals to 1. The second half the girls stepped up the pace and scored another 2 goals. Bellarine fought hard all through the game. The goals were scored by Jess, Tiahna, Shannon and Elena. Nice to have Megan play with us again.

MEN – Newtown Falcons vs Saints Black 1-0

Newtown Falcons defeated Saints Black 1-0 in a Division 1 thriller last Sunday night at Stead Park. Newtown dominated play for most of the match but were unable to convert a field goal during the 70 minutes of regular play. With only one minute remaining, Newtown won a penalty corner and Josh converted a goal after the final siren.
The game was played at a very high standard by both teams, underpinned by the inclusion of many Vic League 1 and Premier League players. The older, more experienced players were well supported across the ground by rising stars from the club’s junior talent pool.
The unrelenting pressure applied by the Falcons become unbearable for Saints and with only fifteen minutes remaining two players were sent off the ground for a short period of time to re-gather themselves.
Saints have recruited well over summer and have sent a very clear message to the competition that they want to win the 2014 Premiership. The good news for the Falcons is that four Victorian representatives are due to come back into the team after the National Championships that are currently being played in Perth and Canberra.
Falcons remain undefeated for the season on top of the ladder, on their quest for back-to-back premierships.

Division 2

WOMEN – Newtown Maroon vs Newtown White 2-0

A depleted Maroon team took to the field under warm conditions again. The team worked well to push play into circle and were rewarded with a team goal as a result of small passes. Forwards Deanne, Sarah and Kirsty worked well together. Solid defence from Hil and Andy kept the wings supplied with many opportunities. A gutsy second half run by Katey which saw numerous opponents beaten resulted in a well deserved goal.
A big thank you to Monique, Peta and Janette for filling in. Monique’s youth and sustained efforts were most welcome!

WOMEN – Newtown White vs Newtown Maroon 0-2

This was a great first match for the season for Newtown White. With 6 new players in the team, there was some reshuffling of positions and learning new roles.
Great midfield defence by Kellie, Katelyn and Molly didn’t allow Maroon to dominate. Great running from Phoebe and Kassandra saw White able to create attacks and some nice passing by Rachel on the left was pleasing to see. The second half saw better marking and more direct approach to the ball, and this will continue to improve in future matches.

WOMEN – Newtown Gold vs Golden Plains 2-1

A hard fought win to Gold to back up last week’s performance. Peta led from the front, both moving the ball forward and providing great defence. Bron was terrific in defence this week, supported well by Remi and Ainsley. Sharon found the ball regularly and moved it forward well. Kelly, Dom, and Tess combined well through the middle, regularly getting the ball in to the D and creating many opportunities. Great work in the forward line by Kate and Julie too.
Once again, a great team effort in very hot conditions. Goals to Peta and  Dom and some nice saves from Claire. Thanks again to Claire for filling in as keeper and to Kellie, Penny and Jessie for doubling up and providing a highly skilled – and much needed – bench. Congratulations to the Captain, Kelly, and Vice-Captain, Dom, on your appointments.
