The Preliminary Final matches on August 24 saw three teams competing to win a place in the Grand Final.
Under 17
Newtown Maroon vs Saints 3-2
Newtown Maroon played Saints in the Semi Final last Sunday with both teams putting their best teams on the pitch. The skill level displayed was high, the ball movement quick with team work and positioning the best seen all season. The game started out evenly with Emma controlling the mid field and Pat, Sean and Nic switching play around the backline very smartly. A break on the 25 saw Tess pick up a ball near the D and pass across the goals where Jack pushed one home to open the account. Both defences continued to repel the ball back into the mid field where the even contests occurred, Noah, Kelly, Adam and Tiahna worked hard for the ball but couldn’t get the passes through to the high forwards. Saints were rewarded a short corner 5 minutes from break and they managed to hit one past Will on the second attempt. Scores tied 1 all at half time.
The second half started well with our forwards Luke, Tess and Angus starting to get the ball a bit more, Gus earned us a corner after a great run into the D about 5 minutes into the half. Adam pushed out to Pat who slipped it left leaving Angus to put it in the net, 2-1 up. The excitement was only short lived as Saints then responded with a corner conversion not more than 2 minutes later, 2 all. The last 15 minutes of the game saw us create more opportunities but we couldn’t finish off. Some good work from Baiden in Defence saw Emma pick up a pass then deliver it to Angus just over the half line, he then did the Angus thing and beat several players before slotting one home to make it 3-2 up. The Win came shortly after with no other scores. Grand Final place won.
Division 1 Women
Newtown Falcons vs Corio 2-2
A hard fast game with Corio getting on the front foot scoring a quick goal. A good defensive game failed to see any addition to the score in the first half. At the start of the second half Corio scored another goal which had us chasing them. A good goal from Katey S lifted the team and with about 10 minutes left Courtney managed to score another goal after a lot of attempts to even the game. At full time the score was 2 all. At the end of a hard fought seven and a half minutes the score was still 2 all. At the end of the second seven and half minutes the score was the same. As Newtown finished ahead on the ladder, they progress to the Grand Final. Thank you to Nicola and Katey for filling in today. Well done ladies for working hard this season and making it to the Grand Final next week.
Division 2 Women
Newtown Gold v Golden Plains 4-0
A fantastic team game from Gold this week to put us through to the final. Great pressure throughout made it tough for Golden Plains to break away and really solid defence kept them scoreless for the game. Great forward movement down the wings presented us with plenty of opportunities; an early conversion from Kate was a great confidence builder and great team play saw three further conversions before the final siren. The win sends us into an all-Newtown Grand Final against the Maroon team next Sunday. Goals to Peta, Kate, Eliza and Amy.
Great work by these three teams to join the 5 other teams already in the Grand Final.
Check the fixture details and come out and support our 8 teams playing on August 31: U13 Maroon, U15 White, U17 Maroon, D1 Men, D2 Men White, D1 Women, D2 Women Maroon and Gold.
A great effort by the Division 1 Women’s team to make the Grand Final – the first time since 1992, and a well deserved reward for their efforts this season.
Overall, this is an awesome effort by all teams – the first time in the Club’s history that we have had 8 teams in the Grand Final – with a team in every division!
