Junior players are our future hockey stars
Coaches are an important part of sport and of learning skills and enjoying the game. A coach is a teacher, but can also be a mentor, a role model, a safety monitor, an ethics guide, and a friend. A coach should be enthusiastic, positive and confident.
Being confident and positive, and effective, is much more likely if the coach has had the appropriate training. Good players don’t automatically make good coaches.
Members who are interested in learning more about coaching are invited to undertake further training through Hockey Victoria.
Community Coach accreditation is the most basic coaches training available. Training is provided through an online module, and is free of charge. The training includes an assessment/checklist section, to be completed after the online section is finished. There are several people in Geelong who can do this assessment.
Community Coach accreditation is suitable for anyone who may not have extensive experience in playing the game of hockey or is just beginning a coaching career.
Level 1 Accredited Coaches Course is for those with more experience of the game, and possibly some experience in coaching. The training will provide more information and some great tips to help with your coaching career. The Level 1 course includes an online questionnaire, a practical component and an assessment of practical competency.
Hockey Victoria and Hockey Geelong will provide the practical component of this course in Geelong on February 8. It is not necessary to have done the Community Coach course prior to undertaking the Level 1 Course. The cost for this course is $40 payable to Hockey Victoria on registration. The fees for the course will be subsidised by the Club for members who commit to coaching a Club team for 2014.
