Hockey is a game which provides great fun, teamwork, camaraderie and the opportunity to excel. It is also an inclusive sport, as players of all ages and skill levels can enjoy participating in this great game.
Homegrown legacy
Australia has an outstanding record on the world hockey arena. The Australian men’s team, the Kookaburras, are the number one ranked men’s hockey team in the world and current holders of the World Cup. The Kookaburras are the only Australian team, male or female, to win a medal at each of the last four Olympic Games. The team has eight Olympic Games medals, seven World Cup medals (two gold), 25 Champions Trophy medals (12 gold – including the past five straight) and all four Commonwealth Games gold medals.
The Hockeyroos, Australia’s women’s hockey team, have also been one of Australia’s most successful sporting teams, with three Olympic Gold Medals, two World Cups and three Commonwealth Games Gold Medals. The Hockeyroos have been crowned Australia’s Team of the Year five times and were unanimously awarded Best Australian Team at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The Hockeyroos are currently ranked fourth in the world following their silver medal in the World Hockey League tournament.
Success begins early
Success at the international level begins at a young age, with most players starting to play hockey at the age of 6 to 8 years. The Newtown City Hockey Club aims to provide the opportunity for as many people as possible to play and experience the fun of hockey. Many of the Club’s players have developed their skills and represented Victoria in higher level competitions.
If you have ever thought that your children might like to have a go at hockey, but aren’t sure what it’s all about, here is your chance to find out.
The Hookin2Hockey program provides children aged five to twelve with the opportunity to learn the basic skills of hockey, in a safe and fun environment.
Where: King Lloyd Reserve, Windsor Rd, Newtown
Cost: No charge
When: Check the Calendar of Events for details of the next session.
Equipment: We will have a hockey stick available for you to use for these sessions. You will need to wear shoes or sneakers and comfortable clothing for running in. A mouthguard is great if you have one. We are very careful about maintaining a safe environment, but it’s good to minimise any risks. If you decide that you would like to buy your own hockey stick, we have some equipment available for sale.
At the end of the program, participants may choose to continue playing hockey and join one of the teams offered by the Newtown City Hockey Club.
