Hockey Season 2019 – August 10 & 11

We have 2 matches left before the end of this hockey season, and are hoping to have at least 6 teams in the finals. Regardless of finishing positions on the ladder, all teams have put in some fantastic efforts this year, and this week was no exception.

Under 8 Mixed

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers

The cold and wet weather could not dampen our Spirit!!

Team Spirit warmed to the occasion with many advances toward goal but the floodgates never opened. Transition between attack and defence continues to be our focus and improvement is seen each week. Lachy was awarded Best Team Player with Tommy receiving the Subway Award for his fast break dribbling towards goal.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit

The U8 Newtown Strikers played Newtown Spirit this week in a well contested game.  Joseph, Lucy and Josien started the game in attack, with Audrey, Hunter and Charlie backing them up in defence. A decisive early play from Hunter saw him stop the ball mid field, and making a strong pass he quickly turned defence into attack.  Audrey and Charlie were also very handy in defence, with a number of good tackles.

Josien was also making some good tackles, and had a long with ball run up the field to in front of goal.  Lucy and Joseph kept moving to get to good positions and at times combined to get the ball forward. The whole team were making some good passes to team mates in good positions, with one of the best passages of play being a series of passes that culminated in a goal.  Hunter started off the play with a pass to Joseph, who sent the ball quickly to a well-positioned Josien, allowing her to score the goal.

At half time coach Maggie praised the team for their good passing and reminded them to make sure there is only one Striker at the ball.

The great play from Strikers continued in the second half with their defensive efforts standing out in particular: Hunter made some great stops and tackles in defence; Lucy, Josien and Audrey combined well to get ball out of defence; Joseph showed determination, running hard back into defence when needed; And both Charlie and Josien at different times stopped the ball right on the goal line. A highlight in attack was a goal from Josien from a long way out after Audrey brought the ball up out of defence.

The awards this week went to Hunter and Joseph.

Newtown Rebels vs Kardinia

U/8 Rebels played Kardinia on a very cold and wet Saturday. Maybe the chill was keeping everyone on their toes because it was a very lively performance. Isaac made a couple of really good chases and tackles. Albie made some great passes, and Manny worked really hard up and down the ground. Jake and Kasey did a good job stopping our opponents’ attacks. There was some good calling, and the team is getting better at knowing and sticking to positions.

Under 10 Mixed

Newtown Strikers v Torquay 0-1

It was a top of the table clash with two strong teams competing for top spot. It was a game that didn’t disappoint keeping everyone on edge. Torquay maintained pressure on our defence, but this allowed Strikers to be dangerous on the counter attack.

It was an epic game, but Torquay applied sustained pressure on the Strikers valiant defence, which was finally broken with a goal in the last 10 minutes of the game. Isabella in goal made several saves and clearing kicks which kept Strikers in the game and Charles at sweeper was a rock in the last line of defence.

Awards this week went to Charles Donovan (Best Team Player) and Isabella Bradbury (Subway).

Newtown Spirit vs Geelong College 5-0 (forfeit)

Under 12 Mixed

Newtown Rebels vs Golden Plains 0-4

Another great game from Rebels this week who took on the ladder leaders and matched them in every aspect except the scoreboard. Everyone had a great game and the 0-4 scoreline didn’t reflect the closeness of general play. Rebels had a number of chances to score but once again we couldn’t quite find the back of the net.

Toby stepped into goals for this game and did a fantastic job, keeping out numerous shots from the Golden Plains side. Jai provided some great run from full back in an unusual role for him, and Eliza and Perri seemed to be everywhere down back demonstrating great tenacity with their tackling and constantly feeding the ball out to good options. Isla continues to dazzle with her growing stick skills and Amelia provided a game highlight with a great run up the field only narrowly missing the goals.

The team has shown great improvement in the back half of this hockey season with some great passing and tackling on display. General play has become more attacking, often starting with a strong releasing pass from the backline utilising the available spaces out wide and some improved running to provide forward options.

MVP this week was Perri, special mentions for Eliza & Toby.

Newtown Spirit vs Geelong Jaguars 1-4

In near freezing conditions with a wild wind and scouring rain, Newtown Spirit played one of their best matches to date. Yes, they were defeated but, the score line was much closer than past matches. We were somewhat reduced in numbers so we must thank the 4 subs from U12 Rebels and Strikers: Kye, Ruby, Amelia and Charlie – who incidentally snatched our one goal in a show of skill and speed. I’m not sure if it was the cold, the pressure of needing to do our very best due to other teams helping us out but every team member’s game improved. Hamish S in goals was lively kicking many attempts well clear and the backs were sweeping them away. Much more play was seen in our goals then previous heavy defensive games and our forwards finally got a chance to shine! Which is much more than can be said of the sun!

Under 14 Mixed

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 3-2

On Saturday Spirit came up against Newtown Strikers. The match was an important one for both teams in respect of the upcoming finals. Early play was congested with Strikers marking Spirit players closely, crowding our possession but running well into space on theirs. They were rewarded by a goal only 2 minutes in.

A converted penalty shot by Harry B put the score at 1 all and sparked a bit more run in the Spirit forwards. As the half progressed, our defenders gave Strikers fewer scoring opportunities and our transition from defense to offense improved. With 5 minutes left in the half, in a very crowded D, Harry B found the back of the net to take the score to 2 – 1. An encore with 3 minutes left on the clock saw Harry chalk up his third and made the half time score 3–1.

Strikers began the second half passing well and catching us flat footed, quickly resulting in a short corner, and then another. Both teams tested opposing defenders repeatedly, penetrating deep into offense and threatening to score. Spirit started moving the ball out wide well with Isabel instigating a number of passages of play that featured quick disposals and accurate passing. A Spirit short corner saw Harry B bounce a hot ball off the top bar. Strikers answered with a fast break into open space catching our defenders off guard and narrowing Spirits lead to 3 – 2. The tension ratcheted up when Strikers worked hard to force a short corner with one minute left on the clock. Spirit defended the corner well to scrape in with a win.

Congratulations to both teams on a close, well-played, tough match.

Special thanks goes out to AJ who stepped out of his coaching role to Umpire in the first half. A sporting sacrifice that was much appreciated by the whole Spirit team.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 2-3

It was an exciting match between Strikers and Spirit on Saturday. Within the first few minutes Strikers had scored through a great goal by Max. Sam was terrific in defence and Charlie was solid in stopping shots from short corners that would have been goals. Overall it was a strong start to the game.

However Spirit was not deterred, shooting three goals and at half time were up 3-1. In the second half a determined Strikers came back with yet another goal by Max. Goalkeeper Ollie, had some great saves and combined with a strong backline, prevented Spirit from scoring for the rest of the game. Maggie, Tom and Oskar were consistent with their efforts and all team members are to be commended for staying focussed and playing well.

Under 17 Mixed

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 1-4

Another cold day for hockey with the Under 17 Spirit taking on Torquay. As Newtown Spirit were missing two of its essential players Max and Bailey, a tense first half saw replacement goalie, Oliver defend well which prevented a well drilled Torquay scoring only one goal for the first half. However, Newtown showed strong determination and were persistent in aiming for several goal opportunities but unfortunately were unsuccessful.  Lots of strong passing and tackling was evident from Newtown who were able to hold Torquay to 1-Nil.

Newtown became more determined in the second half in the midfield from Tom, Harley and Caleb with some great possessions and tackling opportunities. Even our fill in Matilda gave us her best shot, and was close to scoring a goal opportunity from the half circle for Newtown.  With seconds from the end of the game Tom managed to pass a strong ball to Jarret who scored a great 1st goal for Newtown. Unfortunately Torquay were able to score another 3 goals during the second half which saw the end score of 1-4. A great effort by Newtown Spirit who played a strong game.

Newtown Strikers vs Geelong Jaguars 0-10

In challenging conditions, Strikers were pressed from the outset with Geelong Jaguars confident and able to control the ball with accuracy and speed. Jaguars played their usual attacking game and had multiple attempts at goal, however, Strikers were able to defend strongly and keep the score to 3:0 to Jaguars in the first half. At half time coach Phil’s comments focused on the need for strong marking up on our opposition players, running hard to gain possession and accurate passing.

The second half was challenging for Strikers with the Jaguars finding their stride and providing continual attack. Goals came in quick succession and although Strikers put in an admirable challenge, their efforts were not rewarded as Jaguars seemed to be able to create passing options and quickly set up scoring opportunities. The final result was 10:0 to the Jaguars. While this seems a disappointing outcome after last weeks strong game, there were many positives to reflect upon for the team to learn and grow. Thanks to Mason for supporting the team and providing a substitute.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 1-1

1-1 tie with Torquay. It was so exciting to strike first blood and get on the score board. We were unfortunate not to get at least another one. There were some great linkages in play, which was nice to see after working on it in practice.

As we began to tire our opposition coverage wavered, but the defense held strong only allowing 1 goal in. This was a tremendous team effort to get the tie against the ladder leaders. The team included some tired junior players having played their third game for the weekend. Well done everyone.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Spirit vs Geelong Jaguars 6-1

Newtown Spirit approached this game with some confidence despite a couple of disappointing matches in recent weeks. Geelong got on the score board first though with a strong shot on a short corner. However, Spirit regrouped and with a proactive defence meeting the opposition well up the field blunted much of the Geelong attack. Improved marking of opposition players when Geelong did reach their attacking zone did not really allow Geelong to pose a great threat, and Spirit were able to send the ball forward to our advantage. Great work in the defence and midfield by Hannah, Amelia, Andie and Tracey with Kylie positioning herself well to pick off anyone who happened to make it past the early barriers.

With the score 2-1 at half time, Spirit came out for the second half with renewed enthusiasm, and it showed in the great teamwork, positioning and passing which resulted in plenty of attack. Lauren picked off many Geelong attacks and used team mates around her very effectively. Calm unflustered play and control of the ball by players in the goal circle saw 4 more goals scored for Spirit in the second half, including a couple from short corner variations. Geelong had a number of short corners and shots at goal in the second half but were not able to score. Goals to Katie, Peta (2), Hannah, Georgie and Kate.

Senior Men

Newtown Strikers vs Corio 4-2

Corio is always a challenging team to play; both physically and psychologically.  They are quite a bit older than our team but what they lack in speed they make up for in cunning.  The first half was played very evenly and at quite a highly skilled level.  It looked like two teams trying to prove a point before finals.  We scored the first 2 goals however a lapse in concentration allowed Corio to level the scores quickly.

After we scored our third goal in the second half, Corio rallied and they ramped up the pressure.  The pressure applied was strong but unfortunately for Corio’s sake this back-fired on them as they struggled to control their aggression with a number of their players being carded.  Meanwhile, the Strikers remained calm whilst chaos seemed to be happening all around us – a great testament to the level headed attitude of all of our players, both younger and older.

Hockey Season 2019 – August 3 & 4

Under 8 Mixed

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia

The U8 Newtown Strikers played a skilful Kardinia team this week.  Kardinia started very strong, with an early goal, but as Strikers warmed up they began to take back control.

Hunter gave some spark to Strikers with his great efforts to keep the ball in play in the forward line, with a few attempts at goal before he finally scored.  Josien showed some run with the ball, with a well-executed pass to Charlie, who then scored another goal.

In the first half, boys were in the forward positions and the girls in the back, but this swapped over for the 2nd half. The 2nd half saw no score from either team.  Charlie made some good stops in the middle of the ground, and some right on the goal line.  Joseph was also very strong in defence and made some well-directed passes after stopping the ball, including some reverse stick passes.

Josien, Lucy and Audrey were all running well to positions to allow their team mates to pass to them.  Audrey was often in great attacking positions and was very persistent at the ball but was unlucky to not get a goal.

The team were all very happy with how the game went and had a great time, enjoying the pace and passing between teammates. The Subway and Best Team Player awards this week went to Joseph and Audrey.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Rebels

After initially falling into the trap of crowding the ball, the Spirit were able to improve their defence throughout the game. When defending free hits, the team is developing their ability to guard space and this is making it difficult for Spirit’s opponents to attack.

One thing Spirit is working on at present is transitioning from attack to defence without the prompting of the coach throughout the game. This week the Best Team Player award was given to Paige and the Subway award was presented to Summah.

Newtown Rebels vs Newtown Spirit

This week was another great game for Rebels, with all players showing improved focus on the ball and some great supporting moves for teammates with the ball. Marking of the opposition players improved in the second half especially, and there were some great passages of play which moved the ball into attack. Good positioning and backup by Kasey, Jake and some excellent work in front of goal by Albie, with Lennie and Manny showing their speed and ball control skills. Isaac was showing great awareness of the movement of the ball and gained possession, making some good passes to team mates. Awards to Isaac and Manny.

Under 10 Mixed

Newtown Strikers v Newtown Spirit 6-1

Players were primed for what was to be a tough clash between the two Newtown teams who have both had fantastic seasons so far. The first half was evenly matched with end to end Hockey keeping players and spectators on their toes. Spirit took the lead with a breakaway goal, but Strikers fought back with an equalising goal to take them into the half time break 1-1.

Strikers came out firing in the second half playing some of their best Hockey for this hockey season, showcasing skills and systems that have been building throughout the season. All goals scored were “team goals” featuring impressive passing between team mates with tidy finishing from Jacob (3), Zac (2) and Madison (1).

Subway Award to Jacob who displayed impressive distribution skills and Best Team Player Award to Edward who was able to turn defence into attack with his tackles and passing going forward.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 1-6

Newtown Spirit started the game well and had a few good chances in the first 10 minutes of the game. A few good breaks took them up the field but they just couldn’t get the ball in the net. Some good passing between Michael and Matilda finally saw them get a goal. Unfortunately they couldn’t keep up the pressure and a lack of discipline in marking and positioning saw Strikers take the lead 1-2 at half time.

Spirit put up a good fight in the second half but Strikers took advantage of gaps in the Spirit defence to take the score to 1-6.

Under 12 Mixed

Newtown Spirit vs Golden Plains 0-9

Despite being short two players and a one sided score line, the team played as always with 100% effort and enthusiasm. Ruben is a keen team captain who displayed sportsmanship with a resounding 3 cheers and team handshakes. Hamish S in goals had his work cut out and made many great saves; we just need two of him! It was another heavy defensive game with Leo and Ruben kept busy on the back line, Lucy, Grace and Charlotte worked hard to try to get the ball out to our forwards: Hamish K, Emme and Annabelle who were ready and willing to get the ball to our end when the chances came.

By half time the team were missing their talented and tireless attacker Nate who turned up to limit the score line and strengthen the attack. A tough season with numerous significant losses hasn’t dampened the commitment of this young team even in cold, wet conditions, well done all!

Newtown Rebels vs Newtown Strikers 0-2

Hockey is a funny game sometimes. Rebels probably played their best game of the hockey season so far, but went down in a tight tussle with Strikers.

Rebels came out firing early in the game, pushing forward as a team and looking for attacking passes into goal scoring areas. Despite multiple shots they couldn’t quite score. The hockey gods seemed to be against us (although the Strikers defenders and Mai in goals might have also had something to do with it).

Strikers then scored with a fast break and the game turned into a tight tussle for the rest of the game with a number of fast breaks from both sides. Rebels’ best team passage of play for the year came just before half time when a number of pin point passes and aggressive running saw the ball moved from full back to a shot on goal. Unfortunately another near miss, but a pleasure to watch from the sidelines.

The players did seem to gravitate towards the wing on the cheering parents’ side of the ground. At times there were free players and plenty of space on the other wing that might have been an option. MVP this week was Gil who worked hard in both defence and attack. Eliza, Trey and Toby were also recognised for their efforts.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Rebels 2-0

The kids all came together well this week. Some excellent running right from the start, and the ball movement from late in last week’s game was a pleasure to watch from the outset. Again the Strikers were running in waves, with excellent passes out in front of the leading forwards.

We switched some of the positions around today, and it was great to see that everyone took on the challenges. Sam was keen for a run at full back, and he and Amber rebounded the ball out of defence very effectively, keeping the ball away from the Rebels forwards. Thamindu did a stellar job in centre half, despite telling me he wasn’t sure about the role, his ability to find a leading player with clean passes was a real asset to the Strikers breaking the Rebels defensive lines, linking up with Kye, Brandon, Surry, Charlie W and Scarlett. Nice positioning of Isabel and Charlotte B out wide saw us move the ball into attack on several occasions, and some excellent forward running from Zac had the Rebels defence working hard. Some nice movement of the ball resulted in a deep pass to Charlie W, with a nice tap past the keeper getting us on the board.

The Strikers hard running and ball movement kept the Rebels at bay, and some good work from Mai, meant we went into half time with a 1-0 lead.

An early mixup saw Charlie W break away at the start of the second half and put a second goal on the board. Surry followed in Sam’s defensive footprints and made some excellent transitions out of defence. Isabel was moved back into her usual CH position, keeping much of the play out of our defensive 25. Some great ball movement between Chloe, Amber and Charlotte B had us moving forward, looking like we might get another score on the board on several occasions, but the Rebels defence were doing a solid job. Despite his great work in the middle, Thamindu was keen to go back into FB. He was again a rock in defence, working well with Scarlett late in the game, when
the Rebels looked like they might get a late goal, clearing the ball wide out of defence.

A job well done today Strikers, you should all be very proud of the way you played together as a team.

Under 14 Mixed

Newtown Strikers vs GBS Black 2-0

At the half time whistle, scores were nil all. The team reflected on what was working well and where they needed to improve.

With renewed enthusiasm they hit the pitch again. Sam took possession of the ball, played on quickly, passed to Brandon who in turn hit a clean shot to Max and… score! A nice set up by Basyl saw Brandon get Newtown’s second goal. Maggie and Charlie displayed good ball control skills and a big thanks to Liam who volunteered to be goalie. Bringing the ball back to the half line when required rather than moving forward, is something for the team to work on in the next match.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia Blue 2-3

Under 17 Mixed

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia 0-2

Round 11 saw Newtown Spirit take on Kardinia. Again Spirit had to gain assistance from other teams to give them two on the bench.

The first half saw many short corners for Kardinia, none of which produced a goal. One short corner was given by the umpire for Spirit not being 5 metres away. With Spirit not being 5 once again, Angus was given a green card and was sent off for 2 minutes, and with Spirit now losing a player on the field Kardinia was able to score with just minutes left on the clock. With Spirit not able to get the ball past Kardinia’s defence they were not able to put it in the net.

With the first half over Kardinia had a lead of just 1-0, meaning Spirit still had a chance. The second half started and within seconds the rain started to pour down. Even with the wet turf moving the ball faster, it slowed down the Spirit players as some of them slipped over and made it difficult to see.  Within the first couple of minutes Kardinia had the ball in the ‘D’ and missed a goal opportunity, determined to score they fought hard against Max who at one stage dropped to the ground to keep the ball out of the goals.

Moving forward Amelia chased and got control of the ball, she was then able to have a shot at goal which turned into a short corner that Spirit couldn’t score from.
Max and Caleb had their work cut out for them in defence as Kardinia gave it their all. With just nine and a half minutes left Kardinia scored, giving them their second goal for the game. Spirit reactedto this goal, with Tom running the ball up to Spirit’s forward and towards an open goal, Nick was on the post ready for a deflection and only just missed.  Kardinia won the game 2-0.

Newtown Spirit would like to thank their extra players, Mitchell, Amelia, Isabel and Matilda, for helping out to field a side.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 0-2

Newtown Strikers played Torquay in a highly anticipated match on Sunday. As expected Torquay came out hard and fast from the outset and although the pace was quick and the attacking unrelenting, Strikers were terrific in defence and played their best game of the hockey season. A fantastic game to watch, Strikers held Torquay to 1:0 in the first half with good clearances and great goal keeping by EJ.

At half time coach Gordon told players their defence was really good, though they could attack a bit more, and gave them instructions to find their opposition and mark-up
tightly. The second half was just as exciting as the first with attempts on goal by both sides, including solid attempts by Ben and Riley. Strikers held off Torquay until the last two minutes when they managed to get another ball through to end the game the 2:0 up.

Another great effort for an emerging team, well done Strikers. Special thanks to Harry for putting some skin in the game (literally) and to Kate for playing up
from U14’s.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Geelong Jaguars 0-7

Division 2 Women

Two games for Newtown Spirit this weekend, with the rained out game against Torquay being replayed. Unfortunately, neither of these games went to plan but the effort of all the players cannot be faulted.

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 0-5

There were some great moves and passing between the midfield and forwards, with Georgie, Isabel and Maryanne doing some great running. Hannah’s confidence in gaining and holding possession until the appropriate moment was an advantage. Loose marking in the midfield however allowed Torquay to use their pace to get behind the defence and some slick moves on the short corners paid off in goals for them.

The second half saw some improved defence with Amelia, Tracey, Beth and Kellie putting pressure on Torquay opponents, but lack of pressure on the ball carrier at Torquay free hits proved costly. Strong passes from Peta gave Deanne and Kate some hope in attack but without result on the board.

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 0-7

With plenty of interchange players available, Spirit had some hope of reversing the trend of the previous day. However, it was not to be. Torquay used speed and accurate passing, finding plenty of gaps despite the best efforts of the team. Torquay had plenty of attack, and if not for the strong defence lead by Kylie, Amelia and Andie, the score may have been higher. Despite the score, the marking had improved from the previous game and there was more pressure on the ball carrier, but Torquay were just too quick and too accurate.

Claudia, Isabel and Deb created some forward movement, with Maryanne again showing great anticipation and movement to the ball. We will recoup this weekend, with still a chance to make the four and the finals. Well done to all.

Senior Men

Newtown Strikers vs Golden Plains 10-

The team was bolstered back close to full strength again with Luke and Peter returning from injury whilst Carl and Will returned from holidays.  Welcome back also to Gordo who has been itching to get back after watching from the sidelines all year.

It was pretty clear at the start that we were likely to dominate the game when Golden Plains took to the field with only 9 players whilst we had 4 on the bench. However the Navigators defended well by flooding their defensive 25m zone and made it challenging for us to score.  The opposition goalie played a great game and forced us to have to try and get around him if we wanted to score.  Nevertheless, our numerous scoring opportunities eventually paid off and we managed to score 10 goals within a good distribution across the forwards and midfielders.

Hockey Season 2019 – July 27 & 28

The 2019 hockey season is rapidly coming to a close, with finals only 4 weeks away.  The season has provided some challenges for our teams along the way, and we congratulate all members on the way they have handled these. We are grateful for the dedication and commitment shown by players, coaches, managers and umpires, and are very proud of the efforts of all members. Thanks also to the parents and supporters who continue to encourage all to give their best efforts.

Newtown Strikers vs Saints

Newtown Strikers had only 5 players this week, but that was enough for their game against the Saints, who had only 4. Strikers dominated the game, scoring many goals, but they also showed great sportsmanship trying to keep the game enjoyable for the Saints players as well. Josien scored a number of goals, particularly in the first half.  Some were the result of an individual effort, but most were the result of a team effort with multiple passes leading up to the goal involving Audrey, Charlie and Josien.  Charlie also scored in the first half after another combination of passes from the team.

Hunter and Joseph played well in defense in the first half, with Joseph showing some great skills with the ball, but they both moved to forward positions in the second half where they also had opportunities in front of goal.  Hunter scored 2 goals early, and Joseph had a couple of near misses before he scored. The team also benefitted from the positioning of Audrey, who was running to attacking positions when her teammates had the ball throughout the game. This included running up the field after passing to a teammate so that she was ready to receive the ball again.

Josien and Charlie won the Best Team Player and Subway Awards for their great play this week.

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia

Newtown Rebels vs Torquay

Thanks to Torquay for loaning us some players to even up the numbers, which contributed to a very steady defence. Rebels players worked hard to get into good position, and marking of the opposition players improved as the game went along. Great tackling and some strong passes to players with space to receive and move the ball to our advantage saw Rebels often in the forward half. Great work by Kai and Lenny, who ran hard to get to the ball, with Kasey and Jake showing excellent awareness of teamwork and position to maintain possession with successive passes to Rebels players. Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia 5-0

Strikers faced some tough competition when they lined up against Kardinia who have quality players in their side. The first 15 min was a tight contest with play and opportunities evenly matched. Kardinia had some players with the ability to hit through our defensive lines which put pressure on our goal. Strikers showed great hockey smarts in recognising this and set defensive lines further back to intercept these long balls and then turned defence into attack.

Strikers continued to build pressure on Kardinia with our use of width and passing which proved too much for their defence resulting in Jacob (1), Will B (1) and Zac (3) scoring goals. Stand out performances from Charles who was rock-solid in the centre of the field and Will H providing important tackles when needed.

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 4-0

Spirit came out firing after a great match last week. They took the game to Torquay straight from the starting whistle and held the bulk of the possession in the first half. There was some great passing and skills on display including a couple of great switches across the middle of the field. Two goals from Michael saw Newtown take the lead in the first half.

The pressure continued in the second half and Newtown secured two short corners – the second of which resulted in a goal from George. A third and final goal from Michael saw Spirit take the win. The team have really gelled in the last few weeks and it has been great to see them put their skills into play.

Newtown Rebels vs Newtown Spirit 5-0

In our second match-up for this hockey season Rebels faced a much stronger line of defence from the Newtown Spirit team. In the first half of the game we spent a lot of time in our goal-scoring quarter of the field but the Spirit defenders – particularly Hamish in goals – seemed to have an answer for every attack. Among many efforts, of note was Amelia’s strong attempt at a reverse stick shot on goal which she couldn’t quite convert, while Peri and Gil both managed to score.

Heading into the second half the team were encouraged to focus on square passes, using the wing and passing down the line, and effective teamwork. Some great examples of this were numerous tackles followed by quick short passes to team-mates; quick thinking from Peri in the back line who switched the ball across the field to Amelia in great position to pass it forwards to Isabelle holding position on the wing; and Trey who held a very solid position as full back, stopping multiple attacks by Spirit and passing the ball swiftly back through to our attacking players.

Final team stats were Gil – 3 goals, Brayden – 1 goal, Peri – 1 goal, although all of these were team assisted goals. MVP this week goes to Gil, with special mentions to Eliza, Peri and Toby.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Rebels 0-5

Newtown Spirit had a good game vs Rebel’s on Saturday and were solid in defence with Captain Hamish S in goals starring, coming off his line to stop a number of Rebel attacks! Dynamic duo Ruben and Leo as fullbacks along with Charlotte & Lucy worked overtime absorbing a high number of penalty corners and only conceding the best strikes on goal from Rebels. Nate, Emma and Grace F tackle counts were high applying a lot of pressure on the opposition forwards and defenders and Grace M, Bella and Emme all played their roles in position. Hamish K keeps on improving and had a number of runs forward. Overall an enjoyable game to watch.

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia 0-2

Strikers started and finished strong this week, with lots of hard running by the team. Kye was joined by his younger brother Zac (from U10’s) this week giving us 1 on the bench, and he certainly held his own in the team, well done Zac.

We were up against a strong Kardinia team, but our kids performed very well, and pushed them the whole way. Kardinia got several short corners, and again we defended well keeping most of the shots out. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to clear one of the balls fast enough, and Kardinia got on the board after an unlucky deflection. Some hard running through the middle meant we got several scoring opportunities of our own in the first half but couldn’t get one past the keeper. Going into half time 1-0 down.

The team were all showing signs of their hard running at half time, which was great, as they were all putting in all they had. Some great discussion by the team really showed that they are analysing their opponents and looking for opportunities. We discussed needing to move the ball wider, closer marking of players and making sure we use the full field width.

The kids kept up the hard work in the second half, and again we had several good scoring opportunities both through hard running, and some short corners, but were not able to capitalise. The ball movement was much better, with some excellent passes for our team mates to run onto, this was really nice to watch. In particular the last couple of movements forward, where plays involved several players, all moving forward together in a wave. Kardinia managed to sneak another shot though, and although we went down 2-0, I don’t think the score reflected how close the game was.

Post the game we discussed that we did all the things we discussed before the game, and it really showed, as we were right in the game. We probably just needed a little bit of luck with the shots on goal. The kids reflected that they thought they just needed to take their opportunities when they presented, again another very insightful comment by the team. Well done Strikers, really enjoying the player development and maturity, keep up the great work!

Under 14 Mixed

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 1-2

On Saturday Spirit matched up against Torquay. Both teams started the game with good running and long passing. Torquay applied fierce tackling keeping the play in our defensive half and we struggled to break into any well-structured offense. As the half progressed Spirit reacted to the close marking by passing more quickly and running the ball hard into attack, but struggled to finish off. Torquay pressed hard in their D resulting in a short corner with 2 minutes left in the half. The Spirit defenders ran well to deny a score only to relinquish a penalty with 1 minute to go. Mai, under pressure, made her save look like a training drill and the score stood at nil all at half time.

The second half started with fast open play giving Spirit a scoring opportunity when Tilly sent a shot just wide in the opening minutes. Torquay closed in again, giving us no room with their tackling and marking. Grace and Luca combined well and our defense repeatedly resisted their attempts to set up open shots at goal. Finally, with 15 minutes left, Torquay scored and followed up 5 minutes later with a second; 2 nil. Spirit regrouped and redoubled their efforts in defense and looked for longer passes to open up the play. This paid off with 6 minutes to go when Harry W ran the ball from just past centre pitch into the D and scored. Spirit continued to outplay Torquay in the closing minutes and had opportunities but couldn’t quite manage to convert. A hard earned short corner resulted just before the final whistle that ended in a near miss.

The final score was 2-1 to Torquay in a hard fought match. The final result reflected our inability to finish off in front of goal. Well done team.

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia White 1-3

In the first half Kardinia had Newtown Strikers under pressure, with some great passing and defence and a half time score of 0-3. However after listening to coach Ahmer in the break, Strikers came out and played a great second half and kept Kardinia scoreless.

Strikers played with a good structure, great defence and the half line worked well together to take the ball forward. The team were quick to move on the ball and create opportunities. This led to a great goal by Liam in the second half. Tom and Sam C worked well together in the back line and Basyl and Oskar kept pressure on the opposition. Kate positioned herself well, Sam S was given a special job by coach Ahmer (still not sure what that was but Sam was smiling!) and despite being injured Ollie volunteered to be goalie. Great to have Kye join the team and to see the players working well together.  

Under 17 Mixed

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia 0-3

Another perfect day for hockey at Stead Park on Sunday with NCHC Strikers playing against Kardinia in arguably their best game for this hockey season with players in position, passing and both attacking and defending with confidence. Strikers came out strong in attack right from the whistle, with strong passing they had a shot on goal within the first few minutes, however, were unable to convert. Kardinia replied and although Strikers held strong in defence, Kardinia slipped a goal through. Strikers were able to clear many of the Kardinia attacking shots, with another slipping through, however they were able to hold Kardinia to 2.0 at half time.

Comments from coach Gordon at half time were to focus on trapping the ball and holding it or passing. In the second half Strikers were able to minimize the Kardinia attack by running out strong at short corners and clearing balls. Kardinia were able to score one last goal in the second half, with Strikers remaining positive the game ended with an opportunity on goals with a short corner on the whistle. A great effort by Strikers who played a strong positional game and showed fantastic growth as a team, well done and keep it up.

Newtown Spirit vs Golden Plains 4-2

Congratulations to both the Newtown Spirit and the Golden Plains players on a great match. Golden Plains continue to be a threat to opposition teams despite being regularly short of players. While this creates more space on the field, the movement of the ball and the teamplay shown by Spirit is improving each week, with players gaining confidence in the abilities and playing style of the team.

Maryanne is enjoying her first season of hockey after a 25 year break, and showing great skills and dash, nipping in to deflect a ball into goal on the left post after a great cross into the circle early in the game. Golden Plains recovered and came back with speed, and with some nifty work on the short corners were able to get 2 goals on the board. However, Spirit persevered, with excellent passing by Peta, Andie and Kellie finding Georgie, Katie and Amelia leading well in the forward line. 1-2 passing using supporting players from Maryanne, Deanne and Kirsty was again a pleasing feature.

As the game progressed, Spirit’s defence held firmly and tightened up on opposition players, with Tracey, Hillary, Kylie, Beth and Hannah meeting the advance early and turning the ball back to Newtown’s advantage. Kylie moved forward intent on scoring a goal, with success. Maryanne scored her second and Kirsty showed great composure to add to the tally. A great game by all players. Well done!

Senior Men

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay 2 8-0

Ten players took to the field to play against the Torquay seconds. Although undermanned, our speed and ability to get to the ball first on most occasions proved to be a strength in this game and we scored quite freely. We went into the second half leading 3-0 with one goal to Tom C and two goals to Angus (a great return after a few weeks break). Tom M played strongly in defence, using his speed to cut off many of Torquay’s attacks and linking up well with Sam to push forward.

The second half continued much the same, with another goal to Tom C and four goals to Sean in a dominant display, including one from a stroke.

Hockey Season 2019 – July 20 & 21

The Junior teams were back in play this week and keen to finish off the 2019 hockey season strongly. There were some excellent examples of perseverance and commitment against tough opposition.

Under 8 Mixed

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia

The highlight of the game, and the pinnacle of achievement for the hockey season, came in the form of a great team goal. A centre pass was followed by 4 successive passes, and finished with a goal without the opposition touching the ball. Parents and coach continue to be impressed with the Spirit team’s endeavour and teamwork.

Blade was awarded Best Team Player for his consistent effort throughout the game. Braxton received the Subway Award for relentless attack on the ball.

Newtown Rebels vs Saints

Newtown Rebels played Saints on Saturday, and with a few players missing on both teams, there was plenty of room to practice passing, making space and calling.

Kai scored a hat trick of goals, the best one coming after a chain of passes through Kasey and Lenny. Jake did a great job in goals, and Albert made a couple of great tackles and passes. Well played Rebels!

Awards to Kasey and Jake, who both showed great awareness of where there team mates were positioned, and of making great position themselves to receive passes. Great running by Lenny and Kai for the whole game. Congratulations also to the Rebels players for their sportsmanship and fair play attitude to the new players on the Saints team.

Newtown Strikers vs Torquay

Newtown Strikers vs Geelong College 10-1

All players were eager and excited to get back into some Hockey after a 3 week mid-season break. The focus on the training pitch was quick ball movement and the Strikers implemented this strategy with great success in their game against Geelong College.

Quick free hits and good positioning from our wings allowed Strikers to use the width and space to go around the Geelong College defence, which created multiple goal shots and goals. To Geelong College’s credit they scored a hard fought goal right before half time, but it was a dominant performance by Strikers, particularly Zac and Will B who were both all over the field in attack and defence displaying great individual skill and distribution to teammates.

Newtown Spirit vs GBS Black 3-2

After a three week break, Newtown Spirit were slow out of the blocks against GBS Black this week. GBS kept the Newtown forwards contained in the first half and took the lead 0-2. Newtown struggled to make good use of the field and lacked discipline in the positioning.

Newtown came out strongly in the second half and turned the game around. The team worked brilliantly together with great calling and passing across the field. The continued pressure resulted in goals from Baxter and Michael. In the dying minutes of the match a second goal from Michael gave Spirit the win. A brilliant comeback and amazing team effort!

Under 12 Mixed

Newtown Rebels vs Kardinia 0-2

It was great to see the team back together on the field on Saturday morning. They hit the field with enthusiasm but were forced into defensive play by Kardinia for most of the first half. There were a few successful clearances from the goals, including an impressive reverse stick save by Gil off the first short corner. After several attacks, Kardinia managed to sneak their first goal past our line of defence.

In the second half Rebels re-grouped, successfully passing the ball out wide to the wing for more opportunities in attack. Emma made several terrific breaks with the ball, Jai and Brayden both had promising attacks into the D, and Alex provided some fantastic passes to open up the field. Eliza, Perry and Toby tackled well in defence and Kye, filling in from Strikers, provided some fantastic clearances in the goals. Unfortunately Kardinia managed to sneak another goal through and we were beaten 2-0 in the end.

Most valued player this week is awarded to Brayden for providing mature leadership when the team received a warning for 5-yards clearance for a free hit, and for holding his position and thus providing a reliable option for passes out wide.

Newtown Spirit vs Torquay 0-9

With 2 players short Newtown Spirit contested all game vs Torquay, 2nd on the ladder,  in a good team effort which was big on tackling and improved passing from Spirit.

Captain Lucy led the team and while the team combined well in defence with Ruben, Charlotte and Hamish in goals starring, Spirit also had times in attack through Emma, Nate and Hamish and Emme in the right positions. However some turnovers occurred due to lack of players up front cost the team with goals against.

Grace did well to keep playing after an early hit in the face mask whilst defending a penalty corner! Overall a great effort despite 0-9 score line.

Newtown Strikers vs Geelong Jaguars 1-1

Another game of two halves this week for the Strikers. The first half we only had about 30% of the team switched on, with the remaining 70% of us having our hockey minds still on holidays. However, some big individual efforts saw us go into half time only 0-1 down, with Mai again doing some great work in the goals.

Kurt rallied the troops at half time, asking for the effort levels which he knows the kids have in them. What a turnaround for the second half. The first part of the half was very even, with both teams rebounding out of defence, and moving the ball into attack. However, as the half progressed, our hard running started to pay off, with repeat entries into the D, several of our forwards having shots on goal, and we were finally rewarded with an equalising goal, courtesy of a deft tap from Charlie W.

The last 3 minutes of the half we managed to keep the ball locked in our attacking quarter, and had multiple shots on goal, however Geelong’s defence remained strong, and they managed to keep the balls out. Just as we were coming in for another attack the final whistle went, and the game probably fittingly finished with a 1-1 draw given our slow start to the game.

Hopefully we can bring this second half momentum into next week’s game, with those switched on hockey brains!

Under 14 Mixed

Newtown Spirit vs Kardinia White 0-5

On Sunday Spirit returned from the break with a tough game against Kardinia White. The match started evenly, with some good open passing from both teams. Kardinia gradually gained momentum, holding play in its attacking half by relentless tackling and giving us no room. Spirit managed a few fast breaks out of defense, one that saw Adam run the ball deep down the left wing creating the first real scoring opportunity. Kardinia responded and pressed harder putting loads of pressure on our full backs. Luca and Harry W aggressively defended multiple short corners while Mai repeatedly rejected fast open shots at goal by the Kardinia forwards. Finally, 10 minutes in, Kardinia scored their first and followed up with a second 2 minutes later. Spirit doubled down on defense during the rest of the half to keep the score at 2-nil.

Coach Darren, assisted by his deputy, Harry, urged the team to always push wide out of defense rather than straight down the pitch. Then, from mid-field, angle the play into the top of the D. Kardinia lifted their intensity in the second half scoring after 3 minutes and again 3 minutes later. The final score was 5-0 to a determined Kardinia.

Despite the end score, Spirit played a good game, defending well and keeping their heads up. Well done.

Newtown Strikers vs Kardinia Blue 2-2

Strikers had most of their team members back and joined by Luca and Mai from Spirit, the team played a fantastic match against Kardinia Blue who were on top of the ladder. Strikers started strongly with Liam shooting the first goal and despite a couple of short corners, they kept Kardinia scoreless in the first half. The team played with confidence and determination. Basyl displayed incredible energy and along with Tom, Max, Sam, Oskar and Charlie made Kardinia work hard when trying to move the ball to their forward line. Ollie, Kayla, Kate and Maggie played their positions well and Brandon hit some great passes. Luca was strong in defence and goalie Mai was sensational in stopping some potential goals. It was a terrific effort by Strikers to draw 2 all with Kardinia in what was a tough match.

Newtown Spirit vs Newtown Strikers 4-1

A beautiful sunny day saw round nine, and the two Newtown teams were up against each other; both teams sought assistance from other Newtown teams, some of these players having played a game just prior to this one.

With no goalie for Spirit, the first half of the game saw the ball spend most of its time in their forward area. Strikers had a strong defence which meant Spirit had several attempts for goal, but were not able to get the ball in the net.  Short passing was essential for Spirit if they wanted to get the ball forward. This made Tom a key player as he was able to pass it up for Harley to run onto.

With the first half over the scores were 2-0 to Spirit. With the Strikers scoring an own goal this gave Harley the goal as he was the last to touch it from Spirit. Tom scored the second goal of the half after Jarret ran it up for him.

With the second half underway Strikers came out hard and with desire to score a goal. Bailey, Caleb and Angus played extremely well to defend the goals without a goalie. Strikers managed to get the ball through fast enough and score their only goal for the game.  With Jarret showing great determination and leading all throughout the game Tom was able to pass the ball to Jarret at the top of the “D”, he was then able to run it across the top and get a lucky goal.  Tom had some missed opportunities. However, was able to score one goal, it was a high ball with just seconds left on the clock.

Final scores were 4-1, an overall good game to watch and a great win by Spirit.  We would like to thank all the players who helped out Spirit and Strikers this week to make up the numbers.

Newtown Strikers vs Newtown Spirit 1-4

Newtown Strikers played Newtown Spirit in ideal conditions on Sunday in the first match back after an extended mid-season break. This inter-club game is always a highly contested and anticipated match. Spirit wasted no time in attacking with a goal within the first two minutes and they continued to attack consistently throughout the first half.  Strikers came back with a shot on goal, however this was intercepted and cleared by the Spirit defense. Spirit scored again in the second half and lead by two at half time.

Coach Gordon’s half time talk focused on Strikers covering players, accelerating and anticipating passes. Instructions also included instant manning up, inside and close and
covering players on the inside. To the Strikers’ credit, they were far more aggressive in the second half with a goal scored by Oliver from a lovely pass from Harry into the unguarded goal. Strikers held possession for a large portion of the second half, however, were unable to breach the Spirit defense a second time with the final result 4:1 to Spirit.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 0-7

A very young Falcons team, with 10 players in junior and senior high, played a very experienced Torquay team. For the first 25 minutes, Falcons stayed toe to toe. Torquay managed 3 goals, to go into half time leading 3-0.  With some good forays into the Torquay circle, Falcons couldn’t quite put one between the posts. A force to watch out for in coming years – Falcons battled hard to the final whistle, and can hold their heads high in 1 0-7 loss. Well done everyone.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Spirit vs Saints Red 0-3

Up against the ladder leaders for a third time this hockey season, and with a 0-8 result in the last encounter, Newtown Spirit could have been forgiven for being pessimistic. However, with the team showing great form and excellent teamwork in recent matches, Spirit began the game well.  Our hopes were a little dented when Saints scored two goals in the first 10 minutes. However, this did not keep us down for long, and excellent proactive defence by Andie, Tracey and Beth met the Saints attacks early and created many delays for Saints and turnovers to the advantage of our team. Great running and thoughtful passing by our forwards saw Peta, Deb, Georgie, Claudia and Maryanne moving the ball into attack.

Some early passages of play through the middle limited the penetration of our attacks but later passages using the wings with midfield backup from Kellie were more effective. Saints continued to attack consistently, and at one stage Spirit defended about 6 penalty corners in a row, keeping the ball out of goal on each occasion.  This persistence and determined defence from Tracey, Hillary, Kellie, Bron, Hannah, Beth, Andie and Emma, with support from Peta, Kirsty and Isabel frustrated Saints and kept them scoreless until they finally scored their third goal in the last few minutes of the game. An excellent game from all players, and a very pleasing effort.

Senior Men

Newtown Spirit vs Saints 1 0-6

It was always going to be a tough game against the top Division 1 team and with a few players out leaving us with a straight 11 it added to the challenge. For the first 15 minutes we were able to maintain the line with neither team scoring until Saints were able to put through four goals in quick sucession.

During the half time break we discussed what was and wasn’t working, coming out determined to limit any further goals and hopefully score some ourselves. Unfortunately, us scoring didn’t happen but we did grind out an exceptional defensive second half limiting Saints to one regular goal and a second questionable one.

All up, couldn’t be more proud of the boys this week, would have been very easy to drop our heads and throw in the towel at half time. Next week promises to be another challenging game vs Geelong Blue.

Hockey Season 2019 – July 13 & 14

With round 11 of the 2019 hockey season played last week, there are now only 6 rounds to go before the finals.

Our senior teams were the only ones in play, and teams are making great efforts to improve their ladder positions and finish this hockey season off well.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Geelong 0-3

What an incredible game all around the field. With two under-14 juniors stepping up for double ups after only having played one senior game in Division Two just a couple of weeks ago, Grace and Charlie did a bang-up job of stepping up to help the Falcons. With injuries and Emma on holidays our midfield was fairly decimated but this was another prime example of our young guns stepping up to do a great job and take on the challenge of matching up against the top of the ladder Geelong. Hailey, Erin, Rach, Charley, Amelia and Nadia followed the lead of hard working, smooth skilled Maggie moving between midfield and forward duties, and for a couple of them a run through the backline. Geelong managed to capitalise on a couple of marking errors and a penalty corner to take a 3-0 lead in the first half.

But the goals stopped there and the second half was scoreless. Commendations to the backline who have been the backbone of practice and who put the last three weeks of focus into play leading to some great use of width, transfering from pressure and support of small play up the sideline. This lead to a much more supported attack. The goals will come!!!

Division 2 Women

Newtown Spirit vs Saints White 2-5

With spirits boosted by good form in recent weeks, and despite last minute changes to the team, Newtown Spirit began well, attacking strongly and controlling the play early in the game. There was plenty of good teamwork, with thoughtful passes to players in good spaces. Maryanne was working well on the left, and was in the right place to put the first goal in the net. Despite great defence by Andie, Hannah and Lauren, and proactive interceptions by Tracey and Bron, Saints managed to sneak one in and even the score. A further goal to Saints did not reduce the effort from Spirit, and Georgie had the final touch in a goal circle scramble to make it 2-2 at half time.

Throughout the game, it was very pleasing to see the great composure and excellent ball control skills from Grace, Charlie, Hannah, Andie and Kirsty. Great running and persistence by Katie, Georgie and Maryanne and well done to Tracey and Bron for always being in the right place to pressure the Saints attacks. Unfortunately, Saints scored 3 goals in the second half, including 2 from penalty strokes.
