Hockey is fun for all ages.
Newtown City Hockey Club offers a ‘Joeys’ junior hockey program for boys and girls turning 4, 5 and 6 years old. The program is aimed at children who like playing around with a hockey stick and ball but are a bit young to concentrate on an organised match and strict rules.
It’s a great way for children to learn the basic skills of hockey, with a focus on fun and small games, without organised matches. Parents are welcome to be involved and assist with some of the games. Each session runs for 30 minutes – long enough to have some fun without getting tired.
Uniform is not required. Players should wear comfortable clothing and shoes to run in. Hockey sticks are available for loan. Players may choose to purchase their own equipment with packages available which include a hockey stick, ball and shinguards.
The program offers the chance to learn the skills of the game of hockey without having to concentrate too much on rules, and is a great preparation for future participation as the child grows. Mum and Dad can participate and provide encouragement and moral support, helping to improve the fun for the child.
