Newtown Maroon vs Kardinia Kangaroos.  The first half saw some great work by Freddie in defence, with great focus on the ball and the movement of play, stopping many shots at goal.  We had great free passes to wide positions but Kardinia were able to cut off many of these attacks.  Improved concentration and marking of opponents in the second half resulted in Newtown gaining possession and with great passing between team mates we were able to create some attacks.  Nice work by Brandon, recognising the best opportunities to pass the ball earned him the Best Team Player award.  Good position and good defence by Michael and Nathan helped to maintain control of the game.

Newtown White vs College Green.   This was the best game of the season for Newtown White!  Everyone agreed that there has been a massive improvement since the start of the season and we are developing great team working skills! Our Coach Kellie was most impressed with:

  • Our teamwork and the way we looked for our team mates for passing;
  • Our ever improving ball skills and the way we are seeking out our team mates when passing;
  • Our marking of opponents;
  • Our momentum –we are “putting our sticks down and keeping on going”

Maggie received the Best Team Player Award for her skilful play and keeping the play going.

Newtown Maroon vs Golden Plains 3-2.  A hard fought win in a very exciting match against Golden Plains this week.  The game was scratchy early with lots of crowding the ball, and Maroon went down a goal within the first 10 minutes.  As the game went on, the players kept to their positions and found targets wider to create good movement up the wings, thanks to good clearances from Willo and Zeke on the back line.  Angus was excellent in the midfield, with patient tackling to dispossess his opponents and feed our forwards.  Will and Harry again showed some great running and dragging to exploit the backstick side, and great passing lead to 3 team goals, including 2 to Taylah.  Kasey was very good kitted up in goals for just the second time this year, and a 60 m solo run from Robbo that nearly yielded another goal had the crowd on its feet near the end.  Best Team Player awards to Angus and Harry.

Newtown White – bye.

Newtown Maroon – bye

Newtown White vs Golden Plains 1-1.  Newtown White took a while to get going this morning, must have been the balmy autumn weather! Golden Plains had most of the early possession but were unable to convert due to some fearless defence by Caleb and obsessive protection of the goal by Josh. Newtown White eventually found their groove and started spreading wide and heading into the opposition’s half.  This excellent team play yielded a goal when Tom took an opportunistic shot from just inside the D that went straight through the goalkeeper’s legs.  Golden Plains had another push on the cusp of half time and if it hadn’t been for an excellent tackle by Matthew, it would have been an almost certain goal to Golden Plains.

The second half started well for Newtown White and credit here goes to the backs and mid field for controlling possession and spreading wide, particularly along the left wing.  Tom was fed some good quality ball forward and left, but to their credit, Golden Plains defended the D well and Newtown White were not able to score. Play from both sides was scrappy at the back end of the second half and Golden Plains equalised with a goal from congested play in front of goal. Soon afterwards, Golden Plains had a final opportunity to snatch the game via a short corner, but desperate defence from Newtown White kept the score drawn.

As Deb indicated to the team after the game, this is the third draw for the season but the team shouldn’t be disheartened as they haven’t been defeated.  The team is demonstrating the positional play, teamwork and skills to be in a position to win and just need to maintain intensity through to the end of the second half. Good effort by all again.

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown White 1-1.  A very close game between the two Newtown U15 teams this week. Maroon scored in the first half with a lovely run by Thomas and were unlucky not to score again. Great play in the backline by Tom McD, Tom B and Luka keeping out numerous attacks by White, although one slipped through in the second half. A full team effort, with Bronte and Monique working well together on the forward line. Thanks to Byron and Eneko for filling in and doing a wonderful job.

Newtown White vs Newtown Maroon 1-1.  We were a team of ten this weekend and no goalie, yet all team members pulled together and contributed. Thanks to Amber and Tom M. for playing with us this week and pressuring Maroon’s defence.  Eva and Laura played their first match of the season for Newtown White.  Laura is to be commended for some fabulous tackles as full back.  Remi was reliable in defence and Bella applied great pressure to Maroon. Maroon scored halfway through the first half, and Newtown White held them at bay for the remainder of the game.  With 5 minutes left in the game, Oliver broke through the Maroon defence and scored from a sharp shot on goal to level the game.  A great game from both teams.

Newtown Maroon vs Kardinia 0-3.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Saints Black 2-1.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Bellarine 0-1.  The game was competitive but Bellarine jumped out of the blocks and scored a goal in the first few minutes, making Newtown chase them all game. Newtown earned a lot of shots at goal with hard work but were unable to score. Overall it was a hard and fast game with good efforts from everyone.  Welcome back to the team Ainsley.

Division 2 Men

Newtown Maroon vs Torquay 5-1.  A great game by Newtown Maroon this week. We came out and scored very quickly, with wonderful play by the forward line, led by Ross and Ben S.  The defence was solid all game as was Martin in goals.  Coming up against a tough Torquay side we dominated all game and finished with a great win.

Newtown White vs Geelong 3-5.  Newtown White lost to Geelong this week. Geelong played to their strength through the middle of the field and caught us on the fast break – wow those guys are quick. It was a good lesson for the team that against quality opposition it becomes even more important to run straight onto your oppositionn player to provide close marking. Whenever the marking was loose it was exploited by Geelong. We welcomed a few new faces again this week and can see the exciting potential once everyone learns each others play and gets the confidence up to start calling decisively. We had a session of excellent hockey along those lines in the last 10 minutes when Geelong’s structure had broken down, the play hardly left their 25 yard area. But with 5 goals in the bank, Geelong held us off through to the whistle.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Maroon vs Geelong – match postponed.

Newtown Gold vs Saints – match postponed.

Newtown White vs Golden Plains 0-2.  The Newtown White team continues to impress with the effort and hard work that each player is prepared to put in.  Newtown began the match with 9 players, a tough ask against the top team in the competition. Great defence by the midfield team with Kellie, Jenny and Katelyn marking opponents well and limiting the opportunities for Golden Plains. Colleen and Tracey pushed up from the back line to cut off many forward moves by Golden Plains. Fantastic running on the forward line by Phoebe, Steffi and Peta resulted in many forays into the attacking circle for Newtown.  A ‘nearly’ goal from a penalty stroke gave us encouragement.  Injuries in the second half saw the team reduced to 7 players for 10 minutes or so, and we played most of the second half with 8 players.  Despite this severe disadvantage, all the players continued to work hard and Golden Plains were not able to dominate even with their numerical advantage. Golden Plains had scored 1 goal in the first half, and followed with another in the second.  Another penalty stroke for the game was saved by Claire, preventing a further score.  A fantastic effort by everyone, especially from Colleen, Phoebe and Jenny.

Excellent Season Continues

Match results from May 10/11 show the benefits of good attendance at training.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 2-1.  Torquay scored the first goal of the match and scores were unchanged at half time.  Newtown Falcons again showed the benefit of match fitness and took advantage of the older Torquay by scoring two goals in the second half.  Adrian was again consistent around goals, and slotted Newtown’s first to level the scores at 1 all.  Zed then took the game on from the 25 yard line beating no less than 7 players to score an amazing field goal.

The score could have been very different if it hadn’t been for Chriso who stepped in as goalkeeper at the last minute.  Chriso used some of his past wicket keeping experience to save a number of goals and to distribute the ball cleanly from the back line.  The team was very strong right across the ground from both a defensive and offensive perspective. There were many great examples of excellent team passing that kept the game very entertaining to watch from the side lines.  A big thank you to Jimmy and Adam from Newtown White for their contributions to the Falcons over the past 6 rounds. It is very reassuring to know that we have such great depth within the Club.  We look forward to their return for some additional Division 1 games later in the season.

  Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Saints 1-0.  This was a hard fought match with neither team able to score.  Solid defence by both teams stopped any attempt to score.  At half time the score was nil all. With about five minutes to go, Newtown managed to break through the Saints defence to score a goal.  Newtown fought hard to stop Saints from scoring in the short time left.  Goal scored by Deb.  Well done ladies.  Keep up the great team play.

 Division 2 Men

Newtown Maroon vs Corio 2-3. A great game, well fought out by Newtown Maroon.  Newtown came out looking for goals and scored quickly, with Minh picking up a loose ball in the D.  The game was locked at 2-2 at half time, and the Newtown defence held on well for most of the game, finally conceding a goal to Corio late in the game.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Maroon vs Saints 2-1.  This is always a tough one but it was a strong game from both teams. The first half saw Saints make many incursions into Newtown Maroon territory but solid defence from Hilary and Katrina thwarted any attempts. With Maroons settling in the forwards made a strong push into Saints defence. A cracker ‘smoking hot’ goal from Katey sealed the first half.  In the second half Saints scored a quick deflection but Maroons quickly got on top and dominated. Many corners resulted in a another goal for Newtown. Rachel was relentless in attack as an inner. Newtown maintained the pressure to come out winners. A huge thank you to Monique, Shannon and Kellie for filling in. Thanks to Claire for the quiet words of encouragement from the sidelines!

Newtown Gold vs Torquay 9-1.  A great game from Newtown Gold this week.  It was pleasing to have a near full strength team back and that produced a great team game. Lots of running from the forwards, particularly Dom and Eliza through the middle, created plenty of opportunities and we were able to capitalise on many of them. Great team defence also prevented Torquay from creating too many opportunities forward and resulted in numerous quick counter attacks.  Two goals to Eliza and Julie and singles to Peta, Kate, Meredith, Dom and Kelly.

Newtown White vs Geelong 0-0.  Newtown White continues to grow in confidence and strength, with teamwork and calling developing well.  The first half saw Newtown with plenty of the play but a tendency to direct play to the middle of the field allowed Geelong to regain control.  Better ball control and possession skills in the second half saw the play directed to space on the wings, and Newtown created many attacks.  Great calling and position by Jade and Rachel with Kass, Steffi and Phoebe running well to space to gain possession resulted in a number of scoring opportunities.  Great midfield defence and confident distribution by Kellie, Jenny and Emmason prevented Geelong from gaining any real domination.  Great awareness of the play by Tracey and Colleen and proactive play cut Geelong off early before reaching the circle.  An excellent game.

Under 17

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown White 4-2.  A close game fought out on the sandy Grammar School pitch, Maroon winning 4-2 in the end.  Some solid work in the back line from Amy and Baiden kept the ball rebounding into the middle of the ground where Tiahma and Chris were able to control play for Maroon.  Good stick work and quick passing allowed the forwards to apply plenty of pressure on the goals.  Noah snuck one home and Gus finished with 3 after a couple of great solo runs from the half line.  All in all a solid performance from both teams.

Newtown White vs Newtown Maroon 2-4.  Newtown White put the pressure on early, passing well and tackling hard, with some short corner chances slightly off-target and well defended by Newtown Maroon’s goalie.  Great work and skills by Alex and Kelly on the wings, working the ball into the attacking half to Adam and Sean. A quick pass from Sean with Miles in great position, able to work past the keeper for a goal, followed soon after by a strong shot by Baden for the second goal of the half. Fantastic goalkeeping again by Brodie against a strong attack.  Despite Newtown White having the majority of play, Maroon were able to boost their score in the second half.  Well done everyone on a great game.  Thanks to Miles, Thomas and Luke for filling in this week.

Under 15

Newtown Maroon vs Kardinia Blue 5-1. Another excellent game from the Under 15 Maroon team. This time against Kardinia Blue, we had new goalkeeper Josh and what a fantastic effort for his only second game with us as goalie. Watch out for him in years to come. Some excellent passing resulting in corners and goals. Everyone was terrific especially when asked to play in different positions to normal, Lovely goal to Miles showing his calmness in front of goal after an excellent pass from Luke. Tom McD enjoyed a bit of a run on the half back line, maybe forward line next week! A full team effort.  Goals to Luke, Thomas, Matt and Miles.

Newtown White vs Kardinia Maroon 5-1.  Both teams had their work cut out for them with only 9 players a side.  In saying that, everyone banded together and we saw some fantastic teamwork by everyone, in particular, great passing. Alex and Jonah had some great plays in the attack in the first half.  Corey played a solid game, as too did Jimmy and Jesse who were relentless in attack.  Sas was under pressure a few times from Kardinia and made some great saves in goal.  Goal scorers Jimmy 3, Jesse 2.

Newtown Maroon vs Geelong 2-0.  A more focused and energetic Newtown Maroon turned up this week – rain had stopped and they seem to be adjusting to the early time slot (though the same can’t be said for the Parents!!).

Good ball movement with some lovely passes and strong defensive play kept the majority of play up Newtown’s end in the first half.  The newer players are really listening well and playing a stronger role in the team as time goes on – Paris making real effort and positioning herself well to receive and pass on the ball. Team goals were set up for Tom to finish off twice in the first half – nice strong decisive field goals. The coaching message at half time focused on playing out wide, spreading options when tackling, rather than 2 on 1, as well as focusing on players holding their positions.

The second half was scoreless but Newtown Maroon continued to work on the strategies reiterated.  Jamie showed some lovely skill and control out wide, and Byron was building his speedy skill throughout the game! Well done Maroon, to win against a very promising Geelong team. Newtown Maroon is continuing to grow as a team with positive and consistent messages from coaches Marcus and Darren.

Newtown White vs Kardinia 2-2. Very good positional play from all team members during the first half. The mid field under the guidance of captain Matthew spread the ball wide on a number of occasions and with the assistance of the inners, the team was able to gain significant ground up the wings. Great team play enabled Tom to push in a goal from right in front and we went to the half time break with a 1:0 lead.  The second half started well with another string up passes up the field and a goal to Tom after recovering the ball from near the back line and hitting in off the goalkeepers pads. Kardinia were however persistent in attacking and were able to break through our defensive line and pull back both goals. The final score of 2:2 was a fair result and the game was played in a great spirit by both teams. Deb and Brendan both commented on the improvement in positional play from earlier games, however we need to concentrate on calling for the ball in upcoming games.  Overall, an excellent effort from all team members with significant contributions from all.  On a final note, welcome to new team member Trinity, great to have you on board.

Under 11

Newtown Maroon vs Torquay Tornadoes 1-0.  Torquay with ten players were quickly on the defensive against an improved Newtown Maroon team.  Solid defence and wide clearances from Robbo and Willo and centre half Angus generated several long runs down the right via Logan and Zeke.  The play was often congested in the right half, but some attacking runs from Amelia and Harry brought about several circle entries and short corners. Patience paid off when a firm centering ball through the D was narrowly missed by Harley before being slotted home by wing Jemma who was correctly positioned at the left post for a 1-0 win.  Best Team Player Awards to Amelia and Logan.

Newtown White vs Torquay 2-3. A great team game by Newtown White, with good use of the wings and leading to space.  Strong defence by Miles and his effective distribution to team mates allowed Newtown to create attacks, with great passing between players.  Miles was able to score 2 goals. Great position play and game awareness by Jonah and Bailey in defence kept Newtown in control of the game.

 Minkey

Newtown Maroon vs College Green.  Newtown had to work hard against a strong College team this week.  College had lots of attack but great concentration on the ball and awareness of the play saw Meya save lots of shots at goal.  Great passing from defence by Meya allowed Freddie and Imogen to create some attacks.  Some lovely play by Brandon  and Paige and better focus on the game by the team in the second half significantly reduced College’s ability to score.  Best Team Player Award to Meya.

Newtown White vs Geelong.  Things are really coming together in the second game of the season for Newtown White. Our Coach Kellie was most impressed with the way players spread out and our marking of players and particularly commented on the our improvement in the second half. Oliver received the Best Team Player Award for getting a lot of free passes by keeping the play going – well done!.  Our team work is really coming together and so are our balls skills. Thanks to Geelong for being such a fair opponents and great sports! We look forward to next week’s game.

Hard Work Pays Off

May 3 & 4 saw hard work by our players rewarded with some great results.  It’s especially pleasing to see the Division 1 Women’s team, Newtown Falcons, on top of the ladder with 5 wins from 5 matches.  Go ‘Town!!

Minkey

Newtown Gold vs Kardinia Blue.  The Newtown Gold match saw a great game for everyone, with lots of passing and good position play.  Great tackling allowed Newtown to attack often, with great teamwork all over the field.  Best Team Player Award went to L. Williamson for great tackling, passing and team play.

Newtown White vs Newtown Maroon. It was an really impressive first game of the season for Newtown White (our opponents were absent last week)!  Our Coach Kellie was very impressed with our thought processes, marking and passing.  C. Elder received the Best Team Player Award for her marking of players.  R. Smith loved it so much and was so excited after the match he eagerly asked our coach Kellie if we just played “Real Hockey”.  Yes and so well too!  We even scored our first goal of the season.  Thanks to Newtown Maroon for being such a fair opponents and great sports!  Great team work Newtown White!

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown White.  Newtown Maroon are beginning to show the benefits of concentration and teamwork.  Great clearances from defence by I. Clarke helped F. Tobane and M. McKenzie move the ball into attack, resulting in a number of near misses in the goal scoring area.  M. Fursland showed great concentration on the ball and determination to gain possession, earning her the Best Team Player Award.

Newtown White vs Newtown Maroon 2-2.  Round 2 was another great performance by Newtown White, with everyone putting in a fantastic effort regardless of their place on the field.  Well done to K. McCaffrey who took on the role of goalkeeper in her first game of U11, and to M. Humphrey who played his 25th game.  J. Tobane. B. Quinlan, C. Shackell and C. Brown all had some great passes and defended well.  M. Eastman, A. Ayerbe, C. Paul and E. and M. Humphrey were on the ball most of the game with some great long passes by I. Paul and A. Skeen, all playing a role in M. Reilley’s goals.  Strong distribution by the right wing saw Newtown White take an early lead in the first half.  Newtown Maroon lifted in the second half to take the match to an epic 2-2 draw.

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown White 2-2.  In a very hard fought local derby, Newtown White got off to a good start, slotting 2 first-half goals.  The play was fairly congested through the midfield, but in the second half the Maroons were able to put into place some of the things practised at training.  Wide clearances, a few longer through-balls, and some great running with the ball opened up the game and created scoring chances.  Goals to W. Jennings and H. Bradbury levelled the scores to end the game with a
fitting 2-2 draw.  Best Team Player Awards to J Monks and W Jennings.

Newtown Maroon vs Torquay 2-0.  A slower and less assertive start on Saturday by Newtown Maroon – the fantastic effort by so many players from the previous week, seemed to have dropped off! Maybe the later time slot suited our players more.  Torquay, whilst small were strong in defense, and with Maroon turning the ball over to them quite frequently in the first half, our capacity to score was limited, despite much of the play up our end.  Some consistent and impressive running by A. Reilley proved a real strength for Maroon this week, offering some great leadership by example, positioning herself out wide and continuing to run and chase the ball.  More lessons were learned about the danger of focusing play up the central corridor, resulting in congested receipt of the ball and high turnovers.  The coaching message at half time focused on work rate with the ball and passing quickly to players in better positions; spreading the field to create options and more talk amongst the team.  This saw a better response by Maroon in the second half, with T. Mahon proving to be solid again this week and two lovely goals – first scored by E. Fischer and second by R. Van der Ploeg. Eventually a good win to Maroon.  The players are continuing to grow as a team with positive and consistent messages from coaches Marcus and Darren.

 Under 15

Newtown Maroon vs Saints 8-1.  Saints started well with a goal early in the game.  Newtown Maroon played well, putting a lot of pressure on the D in the first half.  The second half saw Newtown Maroon make a lot of forward moves which were rewarded with a number of goals.  Excellent moving up forward by T. Pearson, lots of running by H. Stoop and E. Ward was where she needed to be on the post, rewarded by two goals and strong work by everyone.  Ball movement out wide improved in the second half to secure a great win with some very good team play. Goals to H. Stoop, M. Barnett, T. Pearson, E. Ward, M. Rau.

Newtown White vs Kardinia Blue 6-2.  A big thanks to T. Boardman, E. Fischer, M. Rau and A. Reilley for filling in this week.  It was a great game by all, with passes distributed well across the field.  We saw some strong plays in attack, leading to a number of short corners.  S. Lee was reliable as usual in goals with some great saves.  Goal scorers were A. Birse, J. Jirik, M. Rau and J. Stewart.

Newtown White vs Torquay 4-0.  With good playing conditions, Newtown White got off to a good start with two goals in the first few minutes of play to D. Smith and A. Gieles. Hard tackling from F. Peel, B. Sheddan, A. Birse and S. Fitzgerald saw the team working together, passing well and finding opportunities. Torquay regrouped with a chance at goal, well deflected by B. MacIntosh on the post. A short corner to Newtown just before half time resulted in a fourth goal. A quieter second half at a slightly slower pace, with Torquay able to win the ball and put some pressure on the Newtown defenders. But despite some really good work in our attacking half, there was no change to the final score. A good win to Newtown White. Thanks to A. Reilly for filling in this week.

 Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons vs Corio 6-4. Another exhibition of high quality hockey was witnessed on Sunday afternoon when the Falcon’s took on old rivals Corio in round 5 of the Men’s Division 1 Championship.  In a high scoring affair the Falcons were victorious after coming from behind in the first half. The Falcons scored the first goal of the match. However Corio hit back to take the lead 3/2 at half time. The younger and fitter Falcons maintained a higher level of intensity to score an additional 4 goals to Corio’s 1 in the second half.  Goal scorers for the match were A. Jones (2), H. Dolenc (2), J. Humphries (1), and J. Jirik (1).  The team was kept in the game by a strong defense against a number of highly skilled Premier League strikers and a brilliant display of goal keeping by J. Wilkosz.

This game capped off the first round of matches.  Next week the Falcons play Torquay who they defeated 8/3 in the first match of the year.

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons vs Torquay 6-0.  The first half was an even game with good defence by both teams.  Falcons scored one goal in the first half.  The second half started with Falcons starting very hard and with good passing and team work we scored six goals.  Goals were scored by P. Beckworth 1, S. Ryan 1, E. Hobson 1 and C. Pearson 4.   Congratulations for a great team effort and another good win.

Division 2 Men

Newtown Maroon vs Saints 4-0.  Newtown Maroon had a tough game against Saints in the rain on sand at the College, struggling up front but remaining solid in defence with C. Champion playing a great game at back and M. Andrews making some exceptional saves against some tough shots on goal.  Final score 4 – 0 with everyone thoroughly drenched.

Newtown White vs Corio 5-1.  Newtown White is starting to settle on what the team will look like this season with a good mixture of youth and experience.  We were keen to play strongly against Corio this week by concentrating on basic structured hockey on a wet Geelong College surface.  Corio came out very strongly and scored first by linking up with good fast short passes against the run of play.  After this goal Newtown lifted another gear and started playing dominant fast hockey with goals starting to come as a result.  Newtown went to the break having just scored a second goal and then in the second half created many short corner opportunities for three more goals.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Maroon vs Torquay 7-0.  Under threatening skies Newtown Maroon took on an undermanned Torquay side.  The forward line were quick off the mark with great passes from H. Brennan to set up many runs at goal.  The defence were put under a bit of pressure but solid  clearances from H. Davis, A. Woodhead and K. Brennan kept Torquay goalless.  With support from J. Gebert on the right, the forwards were rewarded with 3 goals before half time.  The second half saw  the forwards off and running with K. Smoker winding up for a few more goals and D. Firth well placed for a deflection.  Special thanks to P. Stewart and M. Shears for filling in. Welcome back to B. Charleson.

Newtown White vs Saints – forfeit by Saints.

Junior Season Starts Well

Junior Season Starts Well

April 26 saw the beginning of the 2014 junior season, with many promising signs for the season ahead.

Minkey

Newtown Maroon vs Geelong.

This was a great first game for the Minkey season, with many new players in the team.  Great control and thoughtful midfield play by F. Tobane, and excellent passing from defence by I. Clarke.  Good position and passing by M. McKenzie helped Newtown create some attacks.  Great play by M. Dawson, filling in for Geelong.  Best Team Player Awards to F. Tobane and M. Dawson.

Newtown White found themselves without an opposition so the players filled in for the other Newtown teams.

Newtown Gold vs Golden Plains

The first game for many of these players showed how much they have learnt already in the pre-season, with some great skills and teamwork on display.

U11

Newtown Maroon vs Torquay 2-8

The season kicked off with a fairly even and hard-fought first half.  The centre was quite congested but a break away down the right and a centering pass from W. Jennings via H. Biskup allowed first gamer S. Brown to slot through a great team goal to be down 2-1 at half time.  Torquay dominated a lot of the play in the second half with quick playing on challenging our defensive structure and leading to several short corners and goals.  H. Bradbury provided a spark coming off the bench to finish off a second team goal, showing the value of clearing the ball wide and moving forward in numbers. Congratulations on very encouraging first games by S. Brown, J. Monks and L. Wheatland.  Best Team Player Awards to S. Robson and H. Biskup.  Congratulations to S. Robson who played his 25th game for the Club.

Newtown White vs Kardinia 6-0.

Congratulations to U11 Newtown White on a great first game of the season.  Everyone played their positions well and followed the team goals set by Coach Kellie.  Everyone passed the ball well using the whole field.  Great defence work by M. Barnett and T. Pearson, with great distribution to the forwards.  Well done to J. D’Arcy on his first game in goals, and congratulations to all players on a good first up game, with their effort being rewarded.  Goal scorers M. Chester, M. Barnett, L. D’Arcy.

Newtown Maroon vs Torquay 6-0

Newtown played an excellent team game with great skills and speed in attack.  Great defence by L. Thompson and B. O’Meara, who switched the ball well to transfer play and create opportunities for attacking players C. Warner and A. McKinnon.  Great position and short passing by T. Parker and T. Proebstl saw Newtown put pressure on the Torquay defence with great results.

Newtown White vs Saints 0-5

A good start to the season with Newtown White finding positions well, opening up spaces and making leads with some opportunities up front. Solid defending by goalie B. Birse, supported by J. Hockley-Samon and B. MacIntosh worked hard to slow the strong Saints attack. B. Shedden and J. Jirik had cracking shots on goal going wide and were unlucky not to score. All players showed great skills with some really good running play in their first game together and despite a lot of determination, were out-played by Saints. Well done all. Looking forward to seeing the team gel over the coming weeks.

Thanks to C. Stella, J. Jirik, M. Rau, J. Hockley-Samon and L. Darcy for boosting numbers at short notice.

Division 1 Men

Newtown Falcons – Bye this week

Division 1 Women

Newtown Falcons V Corio 2-1

This was a hard fought but very even game.  Corio scored the first goal half way though the first half, and just before half time Newtown was able to equalise. The second half started hard and fast but the Newtown defence managed to hold Corio out and nullify their attack. With just one minute to go, Newtown had a great team play to move the ball down the field and J. Welsh snuck a goal in to give us a memorable win

Division 2 Men

Newtonw Maroon vs Golden Plains Navigators 0-3

Newtown Maroon played well with strong play in the centre from T. Gebert.  N. Hinett played well up front, putting pressure on in the circle and tackling the keeper.  Golden Plains scored 2 goals in the first half.  The second half saw some good attacking play by Newtown, without result.  Final score 3-0 to Golden Plains.

Newtown White vs Saints 5-1

The team list for Newtown White Men is yet to settle down for the season.  However, despite injuries and others unavailable this week we were able to field a strong team for the game against Saints on Saturday with some help from the other Newtown teams.  With the unsettled list there is still a fair bit of work to do to learn each others’ game and take advantage of our opportunities.  Despite not quite hitting our stride we had the advantage of 2 good finishers in L. Birse (3 goals) and N. Molyneux (2 goals) to ensure we had a good result on the score board.

Division 2 Women

Newtown Maroon vs Newtown Gold 5-1

The cooler night conditions saw a fast running game with Maroon taking off early.  Lots of solid passes and calling amongst forwards resulted in well executed goals.  S. Lee marked the game with 50 senior matches.  Welcome back to H. Brennan -the Maroon team will probably be a great source of inspiration for her upcoming comedy shows.  Thanks to K. Warren for filling in, with a solid and reliable game at centre-half.

Newtown Gold vs Newtown Maroon 1-5

Gold was outclassed this week in a friendly against Maroon.  We missed the run and talent of our captain and vice-captain.  Despite a great game from T. Parker with some impressive runs and skills through the middle, Gold weren’t able to create enough opportunities up forward, finishing with one goal only – a great hit from P. Hanley.  Despite the score, there was some great defensive work on display – particularly from S. O’Halloran, A. Stuart, M. Kelly (who we welcomed for her first game for the season).  Great to have P. Stewart in goals.

 Newtown White vs Torquay 0-4

Newtown White had to work hard with 10 players, against a young opposition.  Great defence by K. Barnes, K. Dunn and T. Barnes cut off many attacks by Torquay but strong hits in the circle by Torquay saw them score.  Newtown was able to create attacks with M. Duncan, S. Wallace and J. Macintosh running hard but unfortunately without result.  Newtown White continue to show great teamwork and endeavour, and can only improve with further matches.

More Wins in Round 3 Competition

Another good round of matches, with Newtown’s only losses so far being against other Newtown teams.

Division 1

Women – Newtown Falcons vs Geelong, 3-1

Well done team, another good win for the girls and three straight wins.  They started well, getting the first goal. The girls played as a team with lots of good passing. The second half saw a lot more talking and the team work continued, with another 2 goals resulting.  Geelong tried hard but our defence held them to one goal. The goal scorers were S. Ryan, C. Pearson and M. Henry.

Men – Newtown Falcons vs Saints Red, 7-0

Newtown Falcons played Saints Red and recorded a convincing 7 nil victory, to keep Newtown Falcons undefeated on top of the Division 1 ladder.  Goal scorers for the match were L. Fitzgerald 2, J. Jirik 2, N. Molyneux 1, L. Porra (c) 1 and W. Crosbie 1.

Falcons will now earn a nice rest with a bye in round 4.

Division 2

Women – Newtown Gold vs Newtown White  3-0

Gold continued their great start to the season with a win in the friendly against Newtown White, making 3 wins on the trot.  Newly appointed Captain, K. O’Halloran, led the way with another superb game, aided by great running support through the middle from D. Russell and T. Parker.  D. Bolitho, R. Bolitho-Milne and A. Stuart all provided solid defence against the White’s frequent attacks and, as always, P. Hanley provided both attacking and defensive options for the team. K. Jiric had a terrific game forward, sneaking two goals through the White’s defence.  Goal also to J. Clarke.  Another great team game.  Thanks to E. Crassini for filling in as goal keeper and producing some important saves.

Women – Newtown White vs Newtown Gold 0-3

Newtown White continues to impress with some great teamwork and close support game style.  Strong clearances from defence by A. Woodhead, T. Barnes and H. Davis was the starting point for a number of attacking moves by Newtown White. Great running on the forward line by K. Cowle-Henry, P. Walker and S. Wallace was well backed up by great midfield defence from M. Duncan and K. Barnes.   These first two games of the season have shown great promise for future matches.
