School Hockey Clinics Begin

March 17 sees the beginning of the Newtown City Hockey Club’s annual programme of school hockey clinics.

Junior players are our future hockey stars

Founding member of the Club, Alan Barnes, began this programme of school visits in 1977, initially just as an address to the students to invite them to Come and Try Hockey. The programme quickly advanced to include clinics in which the students participated, to get a real idea of what the sport was like. The programme has continued each year, and is one of the major methods by which the Club can let the local community know about its activities.

Typically, the programme sees members of the Club visit anywhere between 7 to 14 schools each year, representing 500 to 1000 students exposed to hockey each year for the past 36 years. Participating students are usually in grades 2, 3 and 4. Interested students are then invited to come and try a Hook In 2 Hockey session.

The programme begins with:

  • Monday March 17 – 9 am to 3.10 pm – Montpellier Primary School
  • Tuesday March 18  – 9 am to 1.30 pm – Roslyn Primary School
  • Thursday March 20 – 9 am to 12.30 pm – Chilwell Primary School
  • Friday March 21 – 9 am to 3.10 pm – Clairvaux Catholic School

If any members are able to assist, please contact us.

Hockey Geelong Representatives

Congratulations to the 30 members who have been selected in Hockey Geelong Junior representative teams for the 2014 season.  These teams will compete in the Hockey Victoria competitions on Friday night.  This is a great opportunity for these players to continue to improve their hockey by playing at this higher level, and a great way to prepare for selections in regional and State teams.  It’s also a great opportunity for younger players to check out the skills and expertise of these players – go and watch the teams when they play their home matches at Stead Park.

State Success Begins Early

2013/ 2014 has so far been a fantastic year for the members of the Newtown City Hockey Club who have aspirations to play at a higher level.

In total there have been 9 players selected in Victorian teams, who have played a large part of their junior hockey with the Newtown City Hockey Club.  Four of these players were a part of the Club’s inaugural Division 1 Men’s Premiership in 2013.  Congratulations to all of these players on their hard work to reach this level.

These players have all taken up the challenge of playing at their best – playing in the Hockey Victoria competition for Altona, Footscray and Hockey Geelong teams, with most also playing for Newtown in the local competition.

And this is where they all started their hockey – on the grass at Lloyd Reserve in the Minkey (U8) programme. Evidently the long grass helped them hone their skills early – look at the concentration on their faces!

The Minkey programme has a strong focus on enjoyment for all the participants, while learning the skills, positions and strategies of the game of hockey. Safety of participants is important, and all participants are required to have appropriate equipment, including mouthguards and shinguards.

If you would like to be a part of a fantastic sport and an inclusive family friendly atmosphere, why not join the Newtown City Hockey Club.  We welcome beginners and experienced players – at all ages from 4 to 64+.

Free Come and Try Hockey sessions for junior beginners commence on March 2, so come and see what it’s all about.  We may discover the next Australian hockey player!

Victorian U18 Team Selections

A fantastic effort by Will Crosbie, Mack Dolenc, James Humphries and Ryan Parry, who have all been selected in the final squad for the Victorian U18 Men’s team. Victoria will send two teams to the National Championships so all these players will have the opportunity to show their skills. Well done all.

Congratulations also to Emma Hatton on her selection in the Victorian U18 Women’s team. At the age of 15, this is an excellent achievement.

It looks like 2014 is going to be another busy year for Emma, as 2013 saw Emma play in both the Victorian U15 indoor and outdoor hockey teams. Well done Emma.
