Festival of Sails Cleanup @ Royal Geelong Yacht Club
Jan 25 @ 12:00 pm – Jan 29 @ 12:00 pm

Newtown Hockey Club is again assisting the Royal Geelong Yacht Club and the Geelong community by providing cleaning services for the Festival of Sails in January.

The Festival of Sails is the oldest race in Victoria, having first been held in 1844. It will be conducted by the Royal Geelong Yacht Club on the Australia Day weekend, January 26 to 28. The event is the largest annual keel boat regatta in the Southern Hemisphere.  More than 300 yachts and 3,000 competitors participate in the race each year.  The event is one of the major highlights for the Geelong community each year. It attracts many visitors and spectators to enjoy the activities, both on and off the water.

The event is the major fundraising venture for the Newtown Hockey Club each year, and this will be the 21st year in which the Club has participated in this event.

With this event, Newtown Hockey Club has the opportunity to raise additional funds, without adding further to members’ costs. Newtown Hockey Club is contracted by the Royal Geelong Yacht Club to keep the Yacht Club area clean and tidy during the Festival. In return, the Club receives reimbursement for the time and labour contributed by our members.

What’s Involved?

The work is not difficult. It includes clearing tables, picking up rubbish, and emptying rubbish bins.

Our work is much appreciated by the yachting community and those who attend the Festival activities. Our volunteers regularly receive positive comments about our contribution from those in attendance. Our participation also provides another means of letting the Geelong community know of the existence of the Newtown Hockey Club.

The Club is seeking volunteers to help with this event. Family, friends and any helpers over the age of 15 are welcome.

Funds raised from events such as this are set aside by the Newtown Hockey Club for the benefit of members and for the future development of facilities. Future development of facilities could include improvements to playing surfaces at Lloyd Reserve (Windsor Road field or a synthetic surface pitch), or improvements to the Claire and Alan Barnes Pavilion at Lloyd Reserve.

Never too young to play hockey

We would love to discover a future hockey star, who might one day be part of the Australian Hockeyroos or the Kookaburras teams.
