Festival of Sails Cleanup @ Royal Geelong Yacht Club
Jan 26 @ 12:00 pm – Jan 28 @ 6:00 pm

Newtown Hockey Club will kick off the 2018 year in January with our major fundraising event for the season.

The 2018 Festival of Sails will be conducted for the 175th time by the Royal Geelong Yacht Club on the Australia Day weekend, January 26 to 28.

This event is the largest annual keel boat regatta in the Southern Hemisphere.  More than 300 yachts and 3,000 competitors participate in the race each year.  First held in 1844, the Festival of Sails Regatta is one of Australia’s and Victoria’s oldest sporting events. The event is one of the major highlights for the Geelong community each year. It attracts many visitors and spectators to enjoy the activities, both on and off the water.

With this event, Newtown Hockey Club has the opportunity to raise additional funds, without adding further to members’ costs. Newtown Hockey Club is contracted by the Royal Geelong Yacht Club to keep the Yacht Club area clean and tidy during the Festival. In return, the Club receives reimbursement for the time and labour contributed by our members.

This arrangement between the Royal Geelong Yacht Club and Newtown Hockey Club has been in place since 1999. Newtown Hockey Club members have contributed at least 240 man hours each year since then.

What’s Involved?

The work is not difficult. It includes clearing tables, picking up rubbish, and emptying rubbish bins. In previous years, we have sorted and recycled aluminium cans. However, this will not be done in 2018 as the labour intensive activity is not matched by the return on the cans.

Our work is much appreciated by the yachting community and those who attend the Festival activities. Our volunteers regularly receive positive comments about our contribution from those in attendance. Our participation also provides another means of letting the Geelong community know of the existence of the Newtown Hockey Club.

The Club is seeking volunteers to help with this event. Family, friends and any helpers over the age of 15 are welcome.

Funds raised from events such as this are set aside by the Newtown Hockey Club for the benefit of members and for the future development of facilities. Future development of facilities could include improvements to playing surfaces at Lloyd Reserve (Windsor Road field or a synthetic surface pitch), or improvements to the Claire and Alan Barnes Pavilion at Lloyd Reserve.

Kookas Midweek Junior Hockey @ King Lloyd Reserve
Feb 9 @ 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm

The Kookas Midweek Junior hockey program provides another option for children to play hockey without clashing with traditional weekend sports activities.

Hockey is a great team sport, and it’s lots of fun and a good way to keep active. Many children have regular weekend activities and are unable to participate in weekend competitions. The Kookas Midweek Junior hockey program is played at 4.30 pm on Fridays at Lloyd Reserve, Newtown. The game is played each week when the school term is in session. Participants can choose to join for 1 term only or can join again for the next term’s program.

We invite boys and girls aged 5 to 12 to join the program. All players are welcome – regardless of whether they have played hockey before or not. Participation in a Hook In 2 Hockey program before joining the Kookas program is optional. The Hook In 2 Hockey program teaches the basic skills of hockey.

Flexible competition

The Kookas program is informal, with no structured competition, no premierships or sheep stations on offer. The rules of hockey apply, but the application of the rules is flexible and may be modified to suit the abilities of the players. This makes it an ideal format for the child who is not yet ready for a full competition format. Teams are selected on the night from those in attendance.

Being active while having fun doing something you like is a great idea. The Kookas Midweek Junior hockey program focuses on having fun with friends while learning the skills and strategies of hockey. Making new friends is just one of the many benefits for children of playing team sports.

The program aims to keep the cost of playing hockey affordable. Club uniform is not required but may be purchased if desired. Hockey sticks are available for loan to participants initially, or you can purchase an equipment package from the Club – $30 for a hockey stick, ball and shinguards. Players should wear mouthguards and shinguards to protect against injury. There is a strong focus on safety and all efforts are made to prevent injury – but just in case – it’s a good idea to be protected.

Fees to play in the program include an annual fee for Hockey Victoria membership, and a Club fee. The Club fee is the amount due for each term’s program. Further details here……
