Hockey Huddle – This Girl Can Week

Newtown City Hockey Club is a supporter of This Girl Can Vic, and is joining VicHealth’s inaugural This Girl Can Week. This Girl Can Week (18-24 March 2019) aims to encourage more women to give physical activity a go, or return to exercise after a break.

This Girl Can Week has some great offers right around Victoria, all designed to inspire women to get active, whether that’s to try something new or returning to a past activity.

VicHealth Acting CEO Dr Lyn Roberts said This Girl Can – Victoria week was about empowering everyday women to get active in their local community without feeling judged.
“We want all women – no matter how sweaty they get, how red their face is or how good they are – to feel comfortable about getting out there and giving physical activity a go. That’s what This Girl Can – Victoria is all about,” Dr Roberts said.

And that’s how we feel at Newtown Hockey Club too. Everyone is welcome to have a go at hockey, regardless of age, previous experience (or not) and skill level.

If you have played hockey in the past, or have watched your children play and thought ‘maybe I could do that’, here is your opportunity to rediscover those lost skills, or learn some new ones.

Join the Hockey Huddle

Sunday March 24, 10 am to 11.30 am.  Skills exploration and game play from 10 to 10.45 am, followed by morning tea and a chat.

King Lloyd Reserve, 80 Windsor Rd, Newtown

Join us for a fun, social ‘have a go’ game of hockey. We will help you brush up on the game skills or learn some new ones. Equipment is provided – and the event is free! So all you need to do is come along. Bring a friend too. No special clothing is needed, just some comfortable clothing you can move around in.

If you discover a passion for hockey, we can tell you all about the options for continuing to play – whether they are competitive or social.

The very successful This Girl Can Vic campaign was launched in March 2018, and inspired 1 in 7 Victorian women to get moving in 2018. The campaign features real Victorian women instead of professional athletes or airbrushed Instagram models and is about empowering women to feel comfortable in their bodies and in public spaces – regardless of their ability, how they look or how sweaty they get.

Come and Try

Hookin2Hockey is a great way for children to find out about hockey and see what fun it is. Boys and girls aged 5 to 12 are invited to come and join a Hookin2Hockey program. There is no commitment to continue – unless you really enjoy it.

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played hockey before because the Hookin2Hockey program is aimed at beginners. We are happy to teach you some skills and show you what it’s all about.

Hockey is:

  • Having fun
  • Open to everyone
  • Co-operating with your team mates
  • Knowing the skills
  • Exciting and energetic
  • Young and old players

Hook In 2 Hockey

A Hookin2Hockey program allows children to see if this is a sport they might like to continue playing, without any expensive initial outlay.  Come along to the first session to see what it’s all about, with no charge to participate.

You can register with Hockey Australia for the Hookin2Hockey program. For a fee of $85, you will receive your own hockey pack (stick, ball, shinguards, backpack) plus insurance cover for the period of the Hookin2Hockey program. If you have any questions, please contact us.

If you would like to continue playing hockey, we can offer you a range of ways to participate – in both summer and winter seasons.

Hook In 2 Hockey Junior hockey

Many of the Australian players began playing hockey in the younger age groups which Hookin2Hockey works with. It’s never too late to begin playing hockey, and almost never too early. We can provide the opportunity for children to begin learning about hockey as young as 3.

Saturday Social Hockey Is Back! Hooray!

Do you like playing hockey but just want to play social hockey? Or have you never played hockey but thought you might like to have a go?

If you love playing hockey but don’t really have the time (or the fitness) to commit to training or regular competition, then Saturday Social hockey is just right for you.

Saturday Social hockey is the ideal place for adults, and even children, to begin playing hockey – or to make a comeback after a period of ‘retirement’. It’s a great opportunity to see if you still have the skills of your youth or to learn some new skills in a friendly and very informal environment. And if you need a rest – feel free to take a breather. Or if you can’t come every week – that’s not a problem. Come whenever you can.

Saturday Social hockey

Saturday Social hockey – fun for all ages

With players generally ranging in age from 6 to 65+, and a very flexible format, it’s a great way for families to play together, and a great way to meet new friends.

Afternoon tea is provided, so the catchup after the game adds another level of enjoyment to the day.

Club Fees are very reasonable. Purchase of Hockey Victoria and Hockey Australia membership provides insurance cover, and is encouraged but not compulsory. There’s no need to buy uniform, and we can loan you a hockey stick if you don’t have one of your own.

Many of our Saturday Social hockey players have discovered that they actually do have the skills and the desire to play hockey, and have rejoined the Club’s regular teams in the Hockey Geelong competitions.

To participate in this program, submit your registration here.
